Stopped by after walking around the downtown area. I decided to order a tuna roll and the salmon oshizushi. Both were okay, nothing bad but nothing memorable either. The fish itself was good quality, but one of the rolls had warm rice, which was a bit different from what I'm used to and slightly threw me off. Portion size was honestly pretty small for the price which made it feel less worth it overall. Service was pretty quick though. And this spot is in the food hall which is a good spot to hangout with a group or even for a date night. It wasn't a bad experience, but it also wasn't enough for me to go out of my way to come back just for this spot. read more

I didn't know about this until some time back, but Orenchi popped up in the food hall of Los Altos's downtown area. There's also sushi. Originally, I had a hard time deciding if I wanted a Japanese or French dinner because it's technically on our side as of this typing still (not the case for the Japanese) the birthday of ("AoF"/"RnK"/"KoF") King, Mature and ("Imas") Ranko. Well, I ended up with the Japanese folks' Orenchi because King is outnumbered 2-1. Sorry King. It's okay, as I had brioche and other sweets from Satura also. I'm not going to type much, as I've already typed what I needed to type with the Santa Clara review. The hospitality is still there. The food is still kicking. I think a few staff members are left. It's been a minute. Yes girls, the guy that served me is cute. I get why people type that the place is a mere shell of itself. It's not that the people don't try. Being in a food hall doesn't give off the ambiance it once had. The scenario probably has bogged down the staff, even if they don't show the feeling. The reason why I now have to dock a star is because Orenchi being in a food hall had to pull off a menu contraction with mixed results. I get that there's no dessert, as one can walk to Satura. Okonomiyaki fries, as spiffy as the idea is, can be time consuming. The part I don't like is the severe reduction of types of ramen. Also, I hate to type it, but there are multiple ramen places out there that are flat out terrific. Orenchi still has the spirit, but too many places are that good. Orenchi is trying all. Even if it hasn't been 3 years, the place is trying. Oh, since no one has typed this yet, bring wipes, as again, food hall. +/The place is still trying with the hospitality and the kicking food. -/Being in a food hall gives the place real eerie flaws such as a menu contraction. read more

This was the first time trying this Orenchi Ramen location. We usually go to their original location in Santa Clara. Not sure why the reviews aren't so good for them. Easy ordering, pay, then get a pager. Pick-up when your order is ready. My wife and I shared... Orenchi Basics: Salt flavor with very creamy and thick tonkotsu pork broth with sliced chashu pork, green onion, seaweed, and sesame seed (4/5). Just as tasty as we remembered. Was surprised it came with a lot of veggies as I feel like ramen typically doesn't come with that many veggies. I liked the noodles and the broth had good flavor and a nice kick- egg was nice and jammy too. The broth was wayyyy too thick though. Haven't seen gluten free ramen yet in any restaurant, so I was super excited to try this! The broth definitely has a kick, they give your chicken as the protein and there's lot of veggies. I am not sure what the red strands are that look like saffron but definitely is not saffron. It's like dried chili pepper strands? Not sure. Anyways this was tasty, loved the broth. The noodles have a bit of a bite to them. I was jealous that my partner got an egg and I didnt but I suppose its because the egg is marinated in soy sauce. My boyfriend and I first started going here at the sunnyvale location, and we were sad when it closed that location. We stumbled upon this food court on our way back from SF. I think that they serve some of the best ramen I've ever had. Ramen is not my favorite food but Orenchi Ramen is my favorite ramen. I dined in and it came out hot and the flavor was awesome. It's not too spicy for those with a minimal spice tolerance. The serving size is pretty big I ended up having leftovers. I like that the location has clean bathrooms inside, and the vibe is modern with a bit of eco sustainable table designs. While it's a bunch of food places in one spot, it's a more elevated food court. I will say the prices are on the higher side but it's Los Altos so it truly isn't a surprise. There is parking nearby, but during rush hours it's competitive parking. They had first Friday one time we went and it was we saw 3 different small bands, a bit older in age olaying classics or like younger artists singing karaoke vibes. Orenchi, the restaurant, is actually a stand in the State Street food hall and shares an eating space with many other eateries. You order at a counter and they give you a buzzer to let you know when your food is ready for pickup. My order took about 8-10 minutes before the buzzer sounded, and the bowl was placed on an aluminum tray with disposable bamboo chopsticks and a soup spoon. The reason I am giving 1 star is because two bites into the ramen, I found a piece of green, stringy plastic in my noodle soup. I brought it to the cashier to show her, and all she said was sorry. She did not offer to remake my bowl or to refund my ramen order. She made no show of concern, even though she took the piece of plastic and examined it. I decided it was not worth making a fuss about, but I will show my displeasure by never eating here again. I liked the texture of the noodles, but my appetite was lost after finding a foreign object while trying to eat it. Not worth the $24 I paid for a single bowl, including tax. read more

Came here for my birthday lunch celebration with my little family and our friend. We wanted to have options so we picked here to eat. My child loves noodles so we ordered a large bowl (extra noodles) of the Tonkatsu with a can of green tea. The noodles were delicious as was the broth. Actually, everything was good. Soup thicker and full of flavor. Noodles cooked perfectly with a chew. I even ate the entire cha Sui which I normally don't. The tonkotsu broth was silky, rich, and layered with flavor, the kind of bowl that warmed your soul and made you feel like you'd stepped off the plane at Narita. It wasn't just about the food--it was the experience. The lively energy of the packed dining room, the rhythmic music pulsing overhead, the attentive servers who never missed a beat--it all came together to create something uniquely special. Even Michelin took notice, recommending the spot for several years in a row. Sadly, that chapter has closed. The original Sunnyvale location has permanently shut its doors. Orenchi has since reappeared in Los Altos Hills, but in a very different form: tucked inside a food court. What was once a full-on restaurant experience has now been reduced to a counter-service stall. And it shows. I recently visited the new location with high hopes, but the experience left me... disappointed. The signature Orenchi Tonkotsu Ramen--once the crown jewel--is no longer the same. The broth was lukewarm, thick, and overly salty. It lacked the smooth, velvety richness it used to have. The soul of the bowl feels lost, like a faded memory of what once was. What's more, the pricing doesn't quite match the new venue. For a food court setting, the cost is surprisingly high--especially considering the diminished quality and lack of atmosphere. It makes me wonder if Orenchi will be able to survive in a Bay Area landscape that's rapidly being filled with internationally renowned ramen chains from Japan, many of which are opening locations across San Francisco and the peninsula. Back when good ramen was hard to find, Orenchi felt like a secret worth sharing. Today, with competition rising and standards climbing, that same ramen no longer holds the weight it once did. It saddens me to say this, but Orenchi's new location just doesn't live up to its former glory. Still, I'll always have fond memories of those nights in Sunnyvale--waiting in line with friends, flipping through the menu in anticipation, and tasting one of the best bowls of ramen this side of the Pacific. I ordered the all star curry. The rice and curry sauce weren't bad. I didn't like the pork cutlet. It was very thin and basically a slice of ham instead of a pork loin slice. The chicken karaage was not bad and the egg was over okay. I didn't like that the lettuce was covering the rice and so to scoop some rice with the curry I had to remove the lettuce. Put a salad on the side if you want to add lettuce. Overall the curry sauce wasn't bad but you need to work on the pork cutlet. Remember tenderizing the pork is important so hit it with tenderizer before cooking. read more

Nice and chewy; on the better side of average The bad: Everything else I knew something was amiss immediately when i put my eyes on it. The broth was extremely thin and watery with none of the luxuriant, unctuous qualities I associate with a good bowl of tonkotsu. It looked like the fat was suspended in sort of globules in the broth and it never came together. The taste was of salt and old pork. None of the other ingredients in the dish had any flavor or any real discernible texture either. Don't even get me started on the chashu. Three to four dry, anemic slivers that tasted old. Well, this was a disappointment. I've loved Orenchi at the original spot on Homestead and I have enjoyed State Street Market in the past, particularly Little Blue Door and its cauliflower dish. So I was really excited when State Street was going to reopen. Orenchi has taken the place of Bao Bei. And Little Blue Door isn't open yet, there's a sign saying "reopening soon". This Orenchi's menu is very limited, compared to the actual restaurant in Santa Clara. There's really just three ramen options: Orenchi, spicy miso, and vegan. In my party, we all got the Orenchi, which is a tonkatsu base, and one person had a spicy miso. The Orenchi broth was thin and pretty bland. The noodles were good and chewy, but the broth was a real letdown. The spicy miso was very spicy. Both had an egg and single slice of chasu - not particularly generous. Plus a smattering of veggies. It was underwhelming, esp. for the price ($18+ except the spicy miso was $22), which seemed on the high end given it's at a glorified food court and you have to serve yourself and bus your own table. Just the ramen would be 2 or 2.5 stars, but I'll bump it up to 3 stars because I really liked coming to State Street Market. They really need to get more food stalls open though, because right now I'm not seeing many compelling reasons to return yet. read more

They have updated their menu with an asterisk to state the GF ramen is not safe for some. Advertising something as gluten free, when it is cooked in gluten water is NOT gluten free. It may be GF noodles, but when cooked in the same water as gluten pasta it will have a high gluten content and cannot be called gluten free. It is unsafe, misleading and perpetuates the narrative of that gluten free diet culture is a choice. If someone is avoiding gluten, they should not have anything prepared this way. Might as well just eat the real ramen noodles. Many people are gluten free for health reasons, not just celiac. This comes off as a false and misleading marketing ploy. Either offer truly GF ramen or offer it with rice noodles and do not advertise GF. read more

I recently tried the new Orenchi Ramen at State Street Market in downtown Los Altos during their soft opening. It's great to see this popular ramen spot in our neighborhood since there aren't many good Asian food options around. The soup base had a great flavor and their noodles were cooked right, just like their restaurant in Santa Clara. The staff is friendly and the environment is pleasant for a food hall. However, where Orenchi falls short is their pricing. A bowl of noodles is fairly expensive and there aren't many options to choose from. Given that it's a self-service food hall, I would expect the suggested starting tip to be lower. But, it starts at 15% and goes up to 25%, which seems a bit high for self-service. There is plenty of parking in the back parking lot on weekdays, although it may be different on weekends. Overall, if you're looking for a tasty bowl of ramen in the area, give Orenchi a try. read more

This was my second time visiting this state street market. This time around I ordered from Konjoe Burger and from Orenchi ramen...the rice pork bowl. It was a good size and good value. It comes with a whole soft boiled egg! So good with a scoop of rice. Really good with the mochi chicken from Konjoe Burger. Ask for the hot chili oil...it's not too spicy! read more
