We went around 6pm on a Wednesday and got seated right away. We ordered some sushi, ramen and appetizers. The sushi was really good but the ramen(spicy miso) was okay. It felt lacking in terms of flavor/ broth was somewhat plain. We also got the chicken karaage, it was crispy and flavorful. The signature 88 roll was our favorite. Great sushi for the price and convenient location near the hotel I was staying at. Super easy to pick up to go and it was packed well. I couldn't help but try their mochi donuts which were okay and the edamame was overly spicy, but the sushi was fresh which is the most important. TL;DR: Great sushi and decent ramen, but major service issues once the restaurant gets busy. Long waits and forgotten orders due to online order overload, make it hard to justify dining in, despite the food quality and potential. This place is a bit of a love-hate relationship for me, and it's hard to explain. Things started off pretty smoothly. Based on reviews, I was excited to see that they offer both good sushi and ramen--and that part is true. The sushi is really good and solid overall: fresh fish, flavorful roll combinations, and well-balanced rice/ingredient ratios. The ramen is decent. The broth is flavorful, though the chashu doesn't quite compare to what you'd get at a dedicated ramen shop. Still, it's nice to have ramen as an option, especially when dining with a group. That said, service took longer than expected, especially considering ramen is usually quick to prepare. To their credit, they noticed the delay and offered us complimentary edamame, which we appreciated. About 45 minutes in, the restaurant started filling up fast. We were almost finished but decided to order sweet shrimp nigiri, something we always try when it's available. Unfortunately, that's where things went downhill. Once the crowd came in, it became very difficult to get the staff's attention due to the influx of both dine-in and online orders. At least three other tables around us were also missing items or had orders forgotten--just like us. We placed our nigiri order at 5:34 p.m. and didn't receive the two pieces until nearly 7:00 p.m. We didn't even realize how long we had waited until we were leaving. Ironically, once we mentioned it to an employee, the order came out in less than five minutes. The explanation given to multiple tables was that there were too many online orders and they couldn't stop them (??) To me, this felt more like a communication and prioritization issue. Dine-in customers shouldn't be waiting 45 minutes for two pieces of nigiri or a single maki roll. They did offer us 10% off the bill, but it didn't fully make up for the frustrating experience. The food itself is undeniably good, and this place has a lot of potential. However, I wouldn't gamble my time here again unless the service issues are addressed. I really hope they find a better system, because the quality of the food deserves it. read more

I came here about 2 years ago, and I have to say the quality of the fish has definitely improved. My first visit, I was a little disappointed because the fish was a bit tough and poor quality, but this time it was much better. I ordered the Get In My Belly Set, which comes with negitoro, sake, toro, maguro, and salmon belly ($32). So good! The negitoro could've been better tho. The Hokkaido scallop carpaccio was delicious and I loved the buttery texture with the yuzu koshu and truffle oil ($20). Definitely a must order. My bf got the unagi don, which was pretty filling, and we also ordered kurodai nigiri and amaebi (not shown in the pic), and both were really good. Hidden gem for sure. Drive by this place all the time when I'm headed to Whole Foods and finally tried it out. It's in the plaza next to the Walmart and across the street from the Target on Showers. Couple of coworkers recommended the place and it didn't disappoint. The place is surprisingly small but very busy. Went on a Sunday evening and they were packed, but the wait wasn't too long. You have the option to reserve a table( highly recommend) . What I Ordered Bento Box: Short ribs & carrage comes with side of rice, macaroni salad and whole peeps orange which looks really cool. Ribs were amazing and seasoned well. Carrage is always delicious. Carne asada rolls: That's right carne asada didn't seem like it would pair well as a sushi roll, but it was my favorite dish. Overall really great food and the atmosphere is great. Pay attention to the monthly rolls, I only noticed it at the end, but the description looked fire. Premium rolls: - Eighty-Eight Roll was packed and topped with so much fish! I loved the wasbi tobiko on top. The tuna was extremely fresh. Texture was soft. The roll was amazing. Sauce was really good very light and not over powering was savory and a hint of citrus. Highly recommend. - The Phoenix Roll was also amazing. The tobiko flavor was very interesting. It had a smoky taste to it similar to hondashi from their sauce, which was similar to a soy reduction with bonito. I the tobiko may have absorbed some of the sauce flavor (?). The avocado was nice and buttery. The unagi top was really savory. Love the portion size of the fish. Sauce seems like a soy reduction with some hondashi or bonito, very delicious.Hamachi had a nice firmer texture. Love the combination of ingredients. Happy hour: - Takoyaki batter is nice and crispy and a big chunk of tender octopus inside. Lightly dressed which doesn't over power everything. - California roll crab salad was a bit saucy, a bit heavy on the mayo side. - Spicy tuna was good. Minced nicely that there is still texture to the bite rather than all mush. Not too spicy, tasted very fresh. I like that all the rolls were packed. And light on the rice. The speciality rolls were well thought out with amazing execution. All the individual flavors fit perfectly and complimented each other. I would skip the happy hour rolls and re place it with the monthly roll. Didn't get a chance to try it but the description looked really good. We came for lunch at 1:30 on Friday. It wasn't very busy. It was clean. Parking was easy to find. Ambience just perfect. Great place to enjoy a fresh can of Diet Coke over ice. We started with the Tiger Don for the three of us as an appetizer. It was awesome! The unagi & seared salmon was so fresh and it had a splat of seaweed salad with bits of pickled relish. After the toppings and some rice was eaten, the remaining rice with seasoning wasn't as exciting. My son's going to fry an egg over easy and throw it on top for a snack later. The premium 88 roll was interesting. It had crab, unagi, salmon, avocado, tuna, spicy tuna, cucumber, tobiko, and pine nuts. It was good not great. The dragon roll & California roll were also good. Kids would not order the baked roll only because it was kind of boring compared to the others. Oil was turned off so we didn't order dessert. Overall food was good. I don't think the unagi was consistently good on each roll. We will come back again to try the other rolls. read more

I picked this place to eat at because they had sushi AND ramen, then I ended up not even getting ramen. The sushi was good. Pretty typical selection of rolls. Also had gyōza. It was pretty ordinary. Nothing spectacular overall, but nothing to complain about either. Quiet place. Mostly empty on a weekend. No problem getting a seat. Service was good enough. Not very friendly, but not outright rude either. They were quite a bit slow on bringing out one of our orders of sushi, so I'm going to knock off a star for service. We came around opening time. It was pretty empty, save for another party. We were seated pretty quickly, and the service was pleasant. We ordered the chicken karaage, rainbow roll, and agedashi tofu. We tried this place based on the reviews and location close to our hotel. It is a small quaint restaurant with lots of options. We ended up getting a cherry blossom roll, Get in my belly combo, philly roll, and a strawberry mochi for dessert. The rolls were pretty good. The star was the strawberry mochi! It had just the right amount of red bean covered in chewy mochi with a strawberry and it hit. I was tempted to get another one but our server never came back. Eighty-Eight has become a staple for me. I work nearby and whenever I'm feeling a Japanese food craving, my mind immediately goes to this place. They have a little bit of everything here from appetizers like Poke Chips and Edamame, to solid ramen dishes, to bentos and sushi! The staff are all very attentive and friendly and the vibe in the space is super clean and cozy! I don't get sushi rolls often, but this is one place that does them right. I'll talk about some of my favorite dishes here: Garlic Edamame - Definitely has a kick to it, but some of the best edamame I've ever had! Eighty-Eight Roll - I'm shocked by the sheer size of this roll plus the fish on top. This alone is a whole meal. There's unagi, crab, salmon, tuna inside, and it's topped with more salmon and tuna! Such a stuffed roll. Scallop Carpaccio - I LOVE scallop so this was *chef's kiss* The yuzu koshu sauce goes so perfectly with the scallop Get In My Belly Set - I always look for some kind of nigiri set when I get sushi, and this was exactly what I was looking for and for a reasonable price! 4 pieces of nigiri plus negitoro roll! I had an otherwise good experience here, which is why this interaction stood out. While waiting for the payment terminal to become available, I casually asked how the rewards program identifies customers operationally, such as whether it uses a phone number, app, or card. Someone who appeared to be the owner began explaining the rewards program, but never actually answered the question I was asking. The explanation focused on points and rewards menus rather than how customers are identified. I clarified that I only wanted to understand how the system knows who I am, but the explanation restarted instead. What made this difficult was that I was effectively stuck in the interaction while waiting to pay, so there was no natural way to leave the conversation. I later inferred from subsequent interactions that the actual process is simply verbally providing a phone number for staff to enter manually. I've come here a couple of times for lunch and was always happy with their prompt and friendly service. It was quick to get seated and the staff is attentive throughout your meal to ensure you have everything you need. They have some lunch specials - I always get the sashimi combo which comes with a bowl of miso soup. The sashimi is 2 pieces of 3 different kinds of fish and is always fresh, although I wish the actual amount of fish provided was a little bigger. I also got their uni spoon the last time I came and it was so delicious. It's a cold app but has a great combo of sweet and savory flavors incorporated. You can also get a cup of tea on the side for only $2 - it's hot and comforting and you don't have to get a whole teapot like at some places, which ends up being too much for one person. Saw Eighty-Eight pop up a few times on my IG and figured to give it a go! Primarily came here for the omakase, albiet untraditional, it is served all at once to the table. Scallop Carpaccio to start, Omakase with mochi donuts for dessert. Service was very accommodating to dietary restrictions and was almost entirely able to make everything gluten-free. The omakase in comparison to my friend was a bit different in fish offerings, but happy she was able to have substitutions. Scallop Carpaccio ($20) was great! Tender and sweet Hokkaido scallops, topped with ikura and dressed in their yuzu kosho, truffil oil and ponzu sauce. Light, refreshing and a perfect way to start the meal. Omakase Nigiri ($60) came with 10 pieces served with miso soup and salad. Out of the pieces, not too many were stand out. The Hokkaido scallop, maguro and uni were good, ofc. Though the rest of the pieces were easily forgettable. A gripe I had was the rice was on the firm side and underdone, the nigiri fell apart easily, hence the star deductions. I would stick with the rolls (vs the ramen or other cooked items). * Agedashi Tofu ($10) - 3 stars: Pretty standard, not super crunchy, not salty enough, but satisfying nonetheless! * Miso Soup ($5) - 3 stars: From a packet, it was fine? Ordered this because my stomach wasn't feeling well. * Poke Chips ($18): A large portion of fresh looking poke! I could not taste this because I was unwell, but friends said it was good. * Tonkotsu Ramen ($16) - 2.5 stars: What a good deal! I've been here twice and I think there are better sushi spots in the Bay Area. In terms of ambiance, it is pretty average. The service is decent and there is some decor, and it's definitely more of a casual place. For food, I've tried many of their dishes and below are some initial impressions - omakase: this is well plated and looks nice, but I think you can get it fresher elsewhere - garlic tonkotsu ramen: in general, I think getting ramen at a sushi place is never the move. The ramen here was decent, but I would not come back for it - rolls: I think they try hard to do fusion rolls, but it didn't really work for me. I tried the carne asada roll, and the flavors just didn't come through well at all - grilled short ribs: this is an appetizer but it's rly good as a entree as well. Out of everything on the menu, I enjoyed this the most and it was very well priced - salmon sashimi: I enjoyed it but the plating was really bad. I wish they offered fresh wasabi with this - the shooters / spoons: it's super fun to try but taste-wise it was too fishy for me This may be a great place if you want something that is very fusion-y but if you want authentic Japanese food I'd look elsewhere. read more

The exterior is a casual strip mall but the interior was quite cute and I'd be happy to come here on a date. Very clean interior. It wasn't very busy when we arrived by a couple more patrons trickled in over time we were seated. We ordered a bento box with beef and the nigiri lunch special as well as a Hokkaido milk crepe cake to share. Both lunches came with a miso soup. The beef was very tender and had great flavor. Be warned that it is like the ribs at kbbq. You'll be eating around bones. This may prove a little difficult with chopsticks for some people. I was very happy with my nigiri. The presentation was beautiful. The fish was fresh. Good ratio of fish to rice. The wasabi in the nigiri wasn't overpowering. The day we went the two flavors for the crepe cake were Hokkaido milk or mango. Very pleasant surprise to see they have crepe cake. It wasn't too sweet. The chocolate bits gave to some nice texture.
