The salmon side was pretty and I liked the layout. I also liked the veggies underneath the beef teriyaki slices. Cons: Fish was fishy tasting -- not a good after taste. Beef teriyaki slices were thinly cut not against grain, thus had a toughness to it. For the tonkatsu, there was not enough sauce. This lot was around $78, which was good for a quick lunch. read more

The food was excellent- we ordered way too much and all of us are very happy that we'll be able to eat leftovers for lunch tomorrow. Our kids, ages 9 and 10, ordered and enjoyed the salmon Sunset roll, Lion King Roll, Paradise roll, and Californian roll. I got the seafood udon which was very tasty and such a generous, big serving. Fish didn't taste fresh so that was very disappointing. I ended up removing the fish eggs off my rolls too and eating the sashimi with the lemon slices to make it better. I ordered for take out but didn't pick up my order, so my review is primarily on the Lion King roll! It's a bit expensive here - about $16-17 for a Lion King. To be honest, I was a little underwhelmed with the quality of sushi here. The salmon had a strange slimey texture, and the entire roll was drenched in a sweet and spicy sauce which overpowered the entire roll. The "roll" part of the sushi was fairly standard but nothing extraordinary. The previous reviews concerning the foul smells in the restaurant are definitely worrisome too lol - I'd likely visit another sushi restaurant in the future! read more

This place is only doing pick up. I always place my order online, which I think that's the best way so you know exactly when to pick it up. I like it because I get an email that they received my order and the approximate time to pick up my food, so I know when to head out. I like to order the lemon roll, rainbow roll, saki nagiri, and sometimes try a random different roll. Also, this time I grabbed the baked mussels as an appetizer. The baked mussels had a lot of sauce which I liked. The fish is always fresh and they don't go cheap. Everything I've had so far is really yummy. I have no complaints. When you want some affordable with lots of options for you to choose from, come to Hanamaru. So many options and so many combo to choose from and they are all good. It comes in a huge quantity. The waiting time was quite short. I ordered a lot and it took no more than 30 minutes. It is located in a corner of the plaza so look closely. This restaurant is on the way home from work and my friends and I were craving sushi, so I suggested we check it out. Little did we know ordering is online only and they are only doing take outs at this time. Because we had such a large order the pickup time was in 30 minutes. So if you want to kill some time there's a Safeway nearby or you can pick up some baked goods/cakes at the bakery next door. The wait was def worth it since the food smelled and tasted fantastic. The presentation was meticulous and assembled with care! We were very impressed. For vegetarians, there are plenty of rolls you can choose from. The best part is is that they're relatively cheap, compared to other places. It's rare to see ingredients like pickled radishes or ume in vegetarian rolls at other restaurants, so I definitely appreciate that! I ordered the following Fried Yam Roll: crunchy texture on the inside from the fried yam. So good! Asparagus/avocado: interesting and well-balanced combo of textures and flavors. Goes well with a bit of soy sauce. Ume/shiso: delicious combo of sour and umami flavors. Honestly can do without soy sauce. Miso soup: disappointing because 2 out of the 3 miso soups we bought was 95% broth with 2-3 tiny pieces of tofu each, lol. The 3rd soup had all of the tofu in it, sadly. I'll definitely have to come back to this restaurant to try some of their other veggie rolls and appetizers. Always grateful when restaurants have a variety of plant-based options. There was one other couple however the very long wait to get our food wasn't necessary since the place was nearly empty. The server smelled like he just got back from a cigarette break. Cute little neighborhood sushi place. I worked nearby and was here at least once a week for years (moved on to a new role away from the area). I wouldn't make the trip from San Jose as I'm close to Japantown and there are lots of options, but when I'm nearby, Hanamaru is my go to. The owners are nice and, probably because I always get the same thing, they know my order before I sit down. However, they do let me (menu modifier here) order my own preferred roll, even though it's not on the menu. I get how difficult and annoying that might be so I VERY MUCH appreciate that. Not everywhere can accommodate that and I definitely recognize the effort. It's definitely worth trying if you're nearby. read more
