I've been dining here since I was 15 and that was in the 1900s! I know they've switched owners since then and they've been able to maintain the same delicious food and great service. This place has seriously been me and my family's go-to for over 30 years. Our mains are the Almond Boneless, Sweet n Sour and my personal favorite, General Tso Chicken. It's always so crispy and flavorful...and the broccoli is so good that I always ask for extra! The staff is polite and of course, they've come to know me over all of these years so that's nice, too. I frequent here a bit and was surprised to see that a whole separate menu for Pad Thia was available. I've only had the Pad Thia with chicken so far and it was pretty good. Huge portion size at a very reasonable price. I usually just order the Almond Chicken combo, and I didn't really stray from that this time either. Instead of the combo I ordered a quart size container of it to split with someone. For less than $10.00 I couldn't believe the amount of food that they packed into the container. We have ordered food from Orient Express many times over the past 20 years and had always been pleased with the quality and quantity of food offered for the price. Placed a large order last week after a break of about 6 months and found not only that the boneless chicken gravy was virtually tasteless but they no longer send along steamed rice with the quart size food, nor do they make it clear on the online menu that that has changed and you have to purchase it separately. Had to make my own while the food got cold after my husband got home and discovered the problem. I don't expect Michelin star food when I order carry out Chinese, but we were all disappointed enough to think we may order elsewhere next time. read more

We've had at least four or five carry out orders since my original posting, each one was terrible. I kept hoping things would get better but they didn't. No matter the level of spice we ordered it was all very spicy, and I love spicy foods. We ordered a huge carry-out meal for 6 people, that was 45 minutes late..we sat waiting for it. And they missed a complete dish. After the long wait we didn't bother correcting it. The latest order was through GrubHub which was fine. However again the food was extremely spicy. And we ordered the regular hot and sour soup, they delivered the Thai hot and sour soup which is extremely spicy. I called to complain and they told me to call GrubHub. I've given up on this place, gave them multiple chances to get it right no luck. Stay away not worth the trouble. read more

After reading the other reviews I decided to try this place. We got the sweet and sour chicken, almond chicken with broccoli, egg rolls and won ton soup. We enjoyed all of them. The chicken was moist and not too heavily battered. The egg rolls were filled with quality ingredients, shrimp, chicken, and bean sprouts. And the soup was not too salty. A few nights ago my family was craving Chinese. Unfortunately, most of the places we pick up Chinese are not around the corner from our house, so we were looking for something new. My aunt suggested Orient Express, her family eats here all of the time. When we pulled in, we just knew it was going to be good. There was a long line and their phone was ringing off the hook with phone orders. We had to wait for our food, and knew it was going to be nice and fresh. We ordered a quart of General Tao and a quart of Sweet and Sour Chicken, a Large Egg drop soup and a shrimp eggroll. We could barely pick up our bag it was so full! Our total was about $23 and it fed the 3 of us and would have for 2 or more sittings. The food was tasty, although the sweet and sour chicken wasn't the best that I've had. I ate the sweet and sour chicken while the rest of my family ate General Tao. Later that night I woke up and had difficulty sleeping because I didn't feel well. The feelings of nausea and stomach ache lasted through the following day. I wasn't ready to blame the food right off the bat, but did tell my family just in case. One minor importance about my family is our health. We rarely get sick. I haven't been to the doctor for an illness in years. We're a healthy bunch and usually don't even pick up the flu. From how I felt the day I felt sick, I doubt it was the flu. I was able to work that day, just felt uncomfortable. My brother ate the sweet and sour chicken the day I felt sick because he figured, we rarely get sick and it probably wasn't the chicken. Unfortunately for him, he suffered through the night and following day the same that I had. We did call and let them know, the woman who answered the phone said she'd look into it. For me the food was decent, but could have been better. The amount you get for the price is superb, but unfortunately it made my family sick. We will not be returning. I don't know if this was a fluke because they really did seem busy and I'm sure if it was common they wouldn't have been. But I'm not taking that chance again. read more

I have been going to this place since it opened. Hands down for me the best Chinese food. Not sure why this is a first review other than we all get complacent. Or we are getting old. Wow, what a nice surprise! I love this place! First, I want to recommend the almond chicken and General Tao's chicken. They're both amazing. But more about those in a second. I want to tell you what makes this place so great. I was in the area, looking for a Chinese restaurant, and a friend suggested I try the Orient Express. She told me it was a nice family-friendly place to get carry outs. Unfortunately I arrived late one night, just as they were about to close, but the woman behind the counter was really nice and actually kept the place open for me. I asked her for some recommendations and she was very helpful (and fun to talk to), asking me what kinds of dishes I like, trying to find something to fit my tastes. Which leads me to the almond chicken. I feel like it's been years since I've had it made this way. The breading was really crispy and the chicken was so juicy inside. It was deep-fried and had that unique look of something that's "healthy but not too healthy for you"...the true measure of any good Chinese dish. It actually reminded me of some almond chicken I once ate as a boy. And the General Tao's chicken! I normally don't order spicy food but on a whim (the counter woman was laughing that I should live it up!) I got it spicy and it's great if you like it that way. Very tasty. Again...crispy, with a nice sauce, and it comes with broccoli, which I love. Thank you, General Tao! And the eggrolls are real! That was the really special part. I don't know about you but I've learned to recognize when some Chinese restaurants cut their costs by filling their eggrolls with cabbage but these eggrolls had bean sprouts, shrimp and chicken...the works! And they were a crispy golden brown. I liked them so much I ordered an extra set for breakfast. Honestly, if you've never had eggrolls for breakfast you should give them a try. You'd never know from the outside what a little gem this place is. It's a modest little restaurant in a shopping plaza. The people are really nice and I liked the place much that I went back there three nights in a row. I don't know when I'll be back in the area but I'll have to stop by this place again. read more

Hands down best Chinese food Take Out place I've ever had. They are extremely fast and never get my order wrong. Even if I order a lot of food it only takes them about 10 min. I've never had to wait on the phone or in line. The food is always ready when I get there. The staff is so friendly even though you can tell they are working really hard. On top of everything I mentioned-the food is delicious. Everything tastes like it should and is never gross or sloppy. My family and I eat here at least once a month and we have never gotten ill from their food. Their facility is clean and orderly and is family owned and operated. They are friendly and kind. Customer service is on the level of food service to them as well as adding a personal touch to the experience. Most take out places just take your order, take your money and you are on your way. Orient express is not just a take out place, it is an asian food experience destination. I moved away form the area and still drove the extra miles past several other take out places to get to Orient express. It is most unfortunate that the lady's family got sick form the sweet and sour chicken but it has never and I do not expect it to ever happen to mine. Like I said I have been going there once a month for about 5 years now and I have never , nor have any members of my family, ever gotten sick. The portions of the food for the money are wonderful and very economic for the hard times we are currently in. You can still have the luxury of eating take out with out the heavy cost. It is good quality food for a good price and I am constantly recommending it to everyone I meet. read more

I've lived in Shelby Twp since 1995 and never had food as abundant and consistent on flavor as this one! In 2010 I got married and moved to Royal Oak where I tried several places but none compared to Orient Express. My family has been ordering take out from them at least once a week and we have NEVER gotten sick. This place is not only the friendliest but also the cleanest and they don't use cheap ingredients. I moved back to Shelby Twp in 2012 and couldn't be happier to come back to my favorite take out place! You have to try this place if you live near by. My sister lives in Washington Twp and drives 15 minutes each way at least once a week to grab take out from here. read more

Will not be ordering from here again. Chicken fried rice entree was just reheated rice from leftover combo plates at lunch, rice was dark brown due to all the extra soy they have to put on it to keep it flavored after it dries out. Tasted like how cat food smells. My expectations are high but I expect fresh fried rice when I order it as a dinner entree. carton was left open for maybe an hour and the rice was all dried out which confirmed my suspicions of it being old rice. Moo shu chicken does not come with white rice like most other places. if it does then they forgot mine. lo mein was standard lo mein , bland with that white gravy. I admit I have high requirements for my lo mein and the only place that does is right is New Great Wall. So this place isn't worse than the majority of others with regard to its lo mein, but its just the basic stuff. the Styrofoam carton had its top melted which is gross. also the moo shu sauce had leaked out and was all over the bag, also gross. read more

It wasn't bad but it wasn't good either. The portion was big enough for two people so that is a plus. We usually get cashew chicken or almond boneless chicken which are both fine not great due to the lack of quality of the chicken. Tonight we got chicken chow mein and it was like having soup. I had to eat it out of a bowl with a spoon and my friend had to dump all the liquid out to be able to put it on a plate! DO NOT GO HERE. I read reviews before I went, and because I had been here once before years ago, I figured meh the bad reviews on yelp, etc. are wrong. I live 5 minutes from the restaurant, and was there in 5 minutes after I ordered. My fried rice tastes like white rice that they dumped packets of soy sauce on, my egg roll is luke warm, and my chicken is luke warm at best as if it was all premade and sitting out waiting for someone to order it. I never review places, but the food here is just horrible. I will drive 20 minutes to Troy to go to the Chinese places there that I like as I know at least even with the 20 minute drive, my food is still hotter then this, and doesn't taste like garbage. read more
