The food here is definitely a good value, but honestly, a great price doesn't matter if the food isn't good or fresh. We ordered a wide variety of dishes to give the menu a fair shot--including fish, noodles, and squid--but unfortunately, nothing quite hit the mark. The dishes either completely lacked flavor, or were aggressively over-seasoned with a chaotic mix of MSG and what looked suspiciously like Red No. 40. To make matters worse, the floors are incredibly sticky. I could literally hear the audio track of my shoes peeling off the ground with every single step to our table. The silver lining here was the service. Our server was genuinely friendly and attentive. I just wish the kitchen and the floor mop shared that same dedication! read more

Oceania Inn offers daily sum at one of the more affordable set of prices in the Metro Detroit area. We made the long drive to this eatery as it took nearly an hour to arrive at the Campus Corners Shopping Center in Rochester Hills. There were two dining rooms with the back one reserved for private events and/or overflow if the front one was fully occupied. The decor was pretty plain for a Cantonese cuisine restaurant. One aspect I noticed right way was how slippery the floor was. I don't know if they didn't use enough water to rinse off the residue from cleaning, but even my mom made the same observation which was not good given her compromised mobility. Our group ordered five dim sum offerings and two noodle dishes for our meal. * Deep Fried Shrimp Balls * Pan-Fried Turnip Cake * Rice Roll with BBQ Pork * Steamed Beancake Skin Roll * Steamed Chives Dumpling * Beef Chow Fun (wet style) * Singapore Vermicelli The turnip cake and the rice roll were the best items of the lunch. The cake had more turnip bits and less filler than other places that serve this dim sum staple. The roll was very soft and had a good proportion of char sui inside the rice wrapping. The two noodle dishes were less impressive. We picked a wet style preparation of the Beef Chow Fun because it was healthier and had stalks of bok choy on the side. Each dim sum order was $4.99 while the noodle entrees were $16.50 apiece. A cash discount of 10% was applied to our check which made dining here an even better value. There were hits and misses with our food. I gave our dining experience at Oceania Inn a 3.5 star rating with the main negative being the ambiance or lack thereof. read more

When I moved to Rochester years ago I tried this restaurant and I wasn't that impressed, but the other day my husband and I were out and about and wanted lunch we saw this place which had changed locations so we thought why not? let's try it again.... First and foremost the service was exceptional and the owner even came by our table and said hi, but the food once again did not impress... My husband is Japanese so maybe we're a tough crowd to please with Asian food, but I don't know to me if it's good, it's good . I got the Dim Sum which was just ok there was really no flavor, and the meat dumplings didn't seem to be fried all the way.... Been 40+ years since I set foot inside. Well, the location has changed, now on South side of Walton. Came here because of lack of what we have(Chinese) to pick up from is dirty and food is not to my liking in the Lake Orion/Oxford area. Would not recommend any. Hence, my memories were positive but foggy of better tasting food and cleanliness. I require both. Walked in around 1:45pm and place was full of people eating and conversing. We were promptly greeted and seated. Refreshments of tea and pop were promptly served by the hostess/owner as her waitress was busy. Between the wife and I we had decided on ABC for her and me Gen Tso Chicken but wanted it hot/spicy. Both were served promptly but not like it came off the stove. It wasn't hot but room tempature and certainly not spicy. Rather than make a issue we are and left. Yes, it was clean. This place is great! Love the service, and authentic dim sum! I've looked around every where for authentic chinese (and good versions of the Americanized versions too). Oceania is our go to. It's been exciting to explore the Dim Sum menu. And if you get there a little early, it's an even more amazing value! This is our Christmas Day staple (just be ready for it to be crazy busy!). Abc was undercooked and disgusting. No lettuce and some bright yellow jelly as a gravy. I honestly think the rice was old and maybe even a rerun from someone else's plate. I ate at Oceania many years ago when they were still in the strip mall by Busch's market many years ago. Their still there, but it's their carryout location now since Ace hardware wanted to expand. They moved into this old Panara Bread location about a year ago and I still refused to go until my friend wanted to check this place out. Admittedly I wasn't all that impressed the first few times I ate here because it wasn't anything special. They seemed to have stepped up their game since I was here last, and in a good way. Walking in, they have a great setup with plenty of seating. The menu was expansive and they even have lunch specials on the weekend. I was hungry, but not dinner entree hungry. I went with the sweet and sour chicken since I didn't feel like venturing to much away from what I knew. (remember, their food was so so the last time I was here, so I wasn't expecting much.) Overall the food was quite good and we really enjoyed our meal. The only downside was it took forever for my friends Dim Sum to come out and the timing was bad. Fortunately, she liked her food so that was good. A solid 3 stars because I actually had a good time, but it would take more consistent, steady good times for me to raise it to 4 stars. Overall, WAY better then Cheng's Chinese food on Rochester Road. (well, most is, but that's another story.) read more

Eight of us went to the Oceania Inn after a play. The service was very good; one waiter took care of all of us, and he did a great job getting everybody's orders right and refilling water and tea. And we all appreciated the lazy Susan in the middle of the big table. The food, however, was just fair. It was too salty for my liking and rather bland. It also wasn't particularly hot. The menu stated that frozen yogurt would be served for dessert if available, but apparently, it wasn't available. Odd. They did offer us almond cookies on the way out, which was a nice touch. read more

I ordered the Hot and Spicy jalapeño Chicken and not only was it not spicy but there were no jalapeños. And when I called to ask what happened did they run out of jalapeños the lady outright lied to me saying the ordinary green peppers in the dish were Jalapenos. If I could leave a negative 1 I would. Imagine treating it customer as so stupid that we can't tell the difference between a green pepper and a jalapeño. It was only several months ago that I ordered this very same dish and there were REAL jalapeños. Not green peppers masquerading as jalapeños. First time here and came for dinner. I heard that they recently moved locations so they've been in business for a while. Inside was clean but the music that was playing in the restaurant did not match the ambience. We ordered the string beans, beef chow fun, shrimp with head on, shrimp ball, turnip cake and some sweet and sour ribs. Honestly I did not like the food and felt like I've had better Chinese food at buffets. The only item that was good was the shrimp with the head on. The rest of the items were just not right and did not taste right. The string beans were suppose to be more dry and shrivel up and thinner but this one was thicker and not dried up. The chow fun lacked a lot of flavor and was not the type of noodles most places use (wider flat noodles). Maybe their dim sum taste better but I'm not too sure. read more

Very solid Chinese food in an authentic home-y setting. Mom and I recently moved to the area and were searching out Chinese places to try. We landed on this one one day, and have been back several times since. It's family run and the staff are very kind and accommodating. I particularly like the Singapore vermicelli. I had it originally in Singapore and have been in love with the dish since. This place does a great job of recreating it authentically for a fair price. The Dim Sum appetisers are great as well. I'm ngl, I'm not a massive fan of their regular shrimp fried rice. I find it to be bland and uninspiring. The meat dishes are solid tho and so is the wonton soup. The owner is a real nice guy as well. His face lit up when he told me the part of China he was from and I named a city in the area. Came here for take out dim sum because I was in the area and was really craving dim sum. For reference, this place to where I live is ~30 minutes, so keep in mind that I had to drive back with the food before being able to enjoy it! My go to items are as follows-- Sticky rice wrapped in lotus leaf Bean curd skin wrapped with meat Har gow Rice rolls with pork Char siu bao Decided to add on stuffed eggplant and stuffed fried tofu. I was SO incredibly impressed with how delicious all of the dim sum was. I particularly enjoyed the sticky rice wrapped in lotus leaf because there was the perfect rice to stuffing ratio. I often find that places will skimp on the stuffing, and while sticky rice itself is super flavorful, a generous amount of stuffing is never frowned upon. I enjoyed all of the other items as well. I would say that the portions here are on par with what you would get at other dim sum places around the metro Detroit area. The prices are affordable, and you can definitely get a wide variety dThe food was well-packaged and sustained a 30 minute car ride home. The rice rolls were perfectly soft, and the wrapped for the har gow was a perfect thickness. I felt everything was super well made, and I cannot wait to come back for more. I hope to also try their non dim sum offerings as well! It appears that this place has been open for quite some time, so it must be good to be able to withstand the test of time! My only regret is not trying this place out sooner. Better late than never though, right? read more

I've been going to Oceania FOOOOOOREVER, 30+ years and counting. My family loves it here. I really love this new location that they're in and I'm so very happy that they moved this new location. It's closer to everything and me The new location inside is aesthetically pleasing. Service is great! FYI: I think the customers who are coming back to the restaurants to dine in demand a lot for the little that they leave for tips and food. It is not 10% people (as I have overheard many of times in different restaurants of people discussing the bill), the standard is 20%. Oceania's servers deserve 20% bare minimum and more. read more

Moved to the area recently and just tried them for the first time. I know they just moved locations but I don't think you can tell at all. The food was great! We got their family meal pack which includes Almond Chicken, Steak and Vegetables and General TSaos plus soup, egg rolls and plenty of rice! The Almond Chicken was exactly as I expect it to be, perfectly crunchy and fried with a yummy side sauce. The General Tsaos was a bit more sour than sweet but still pretty delicious and the steak was a nice addition to our food. We did takeout and my order was ready before their estimated time and I was in and out quick! Seems to me their business was as busy as it should be for a Saturday night and moving locations didn't mess with them one bit. read more

I think cleanliness and hygiene are critical when eating at a restaurant. The male server's fingernails were long and pointy - and were dark underneath. He was friendly but the minute he served the plates with those fingernails I immediately lost my appetite. As for food, we only came here because Chengs was closed. And no comparison. Shrimp har Kau had a weird scent to it. Also the fried squid presented on a dish looked like it was half eaten by someone else. It literally looked like leftovers from another table and had a weird scent. Rice looked at least a day old. The other dishes were not appetizing, just looked like it was made yesterday. It gains stars because it was crowded, people looked happy, staff are hard working, and some of my meal was good. They made the best Almond Boneless Chicken, Egg Rolls, Egg Drop Soup, and Singapore Slings. So disappointed when I entered the restaurant. It looked nothing like the old location. The servers push food around on carts and the atmosphere so clinical. What was spot on was the egg roll and soup. I was so looking forward to my chicken dish that Max should have taken a picture of my crushed face. This is not War Shu Gai. There were so many missing elements. The star of the dish is covered by a crispy coated chicken breast, but it missed the show. You wouldn't think much of iceberg lettuce, but it needs to be there! Also, what the heck is that yellow crap?! No, no, no! I had one bite and was done. An older gentleman came by to check on us and i about grabbed him around the neck. "How long have you worked here!" He said he started Oceania. What the hell happened to this dish? He replied the former chef left and now has a new one. Well, that does me no good. I'm going back to Florida with a frown. They've moved to a new place and the quality has not been nearly as good. Not sure if it's new kitchen or what. Bag broke on the way in with almost nothing in it (two entrees). Bags seem pretty thin. I open up my order of Szechuan chicken and attached photo is the sum total of chicken in there. It might as well be a veggie meal at $14.95. This was after waiting about double the time they said when I phoned it in. I'm going to wait a month or two to see how it goes. As of right now, it's not trending in the right direction. read more

The venue is fine, the food is just okay (says a my Chinese dining companions). Cheap lunch specials are $5.50 ... American-Chinese, not authentic Chinese. Menu listed lobster dinner for two at $21. Ditto for Peking Duck. This could be one heck of a deal. I am almost tempted to try it. Restroom ... is a mix of not-clean-enough and painted without a drop cloth - paint splatter camouflages the dirtiness. Will I return? No. Oakland Tea House is nearby and has better food, but no dim sum either. read more

Food was great, I enjoyed our meal. It was not really a good spot for dine in. The atmosphere is dated and there aren't a lot of seating options. The menu was pretty traditional American Chinese. Everything was hot and portions were fine. I enjoyed the orange chicken and the Kung pao. Overall, I would recommend it for carryout but not dine-in. read more
