This was my go to spot in Woburn for many years. It seems to have changed hands recently and everything is different and not in a good way. My favorite lobster sauce, which used to have a thick, delicious gravy is watery. The ginger sauce for the scallion pie, which was basically salty soy sauce is now thick and sweet, almost like a duck sauce. The rice, which was one of my favorites is just gross now. I am only leaving this review as I don't know how to tell them this is why business is off. read more

Another one bites the dust. Yes, the Oriental has changed owners and they drove it into the ground. Like a lot of new owners do when they buy out an establishment. I recently stopped here a couple weeks ago to get some takeout. It's been awhile since I been here, and the last time I did, the previous owners told me they were leaving. The old booths were all gone so I knew something was up. Mind you, the old Oriental wasn't phenomenal, like the Kowloon, but it was decent enough as far as Chinese food goes. So I walked in, the new owner, if that's who it was, greeted me, and I picked up a menu which was the same. Sat down at one of the tables, (new furniture and decorations looked nice, albeit crowded and smaller than before), and picked out what I wanted. They threw in an Egg Drop Soup for free. I don't like that soup but that was gracious of them. I got home and when I got to my steps, the bottom of the bag ripped open and one of the containers fell out and spilled it's contents. I looked at it and said, "What the *&%# is that?!" Not only did this cheap paper bag with no cardboard on the bottom of it rip open, but the glop on the ground wasn't the fried rice I ordered. It was some grey pork chunks with noodles and stringy yellow vegetables, something I would never order. I scooped up what was on the ground and threw it into the swamp out back along with the egg drop soup. The rest of the order? Terrible. The Crab Rangoon's were hardly fried, white, cold, and mushy. The chicken wings were bland and under cooked as well. They're usually pretty tasty from this place, I think they used to use lard when they cooked them, which is healthier and tastier than oil actually. The pork and noodle dish, what was left of it, was disgusting as well, greasy and chewy. The egg roll was the last thing I ordered and it was okay. It's hard to mess something up that's already pre-made. The fried pork rice with bean sprouts was not there, that was the mistake they made when they gave me that grey pork slop instead that festooned my patio. Needless to say, I won't be back after that horror show. My quest for a decent Chinese takeout place around here continues... read more

A couple of months ago We ordered apps and beef chowmein. Also kung pao chicken. The apps were ok but main dishes were not recognizable. Not sure what we got but not what we ordered. We will try one more time. This is so sad as it was our favorite Asian restaurant for many years. read more

I ordered the kung pow vegetables and it's 98% celery and 2% carrots. Not green pepper, not some other green veg, but celery. That is not cool. The sauce is tasty but come on, no veg dish should ever be this much celery unless it's "kung pow celery." Glad I got an appetizer, jeez. I got chicken fried rice to go. I requested to be spicy. When I came home and saw, the food was so soggy with red sauce and the taste was bad. I requested them to make it spicy by adding red chilies but they poured some sauce and it was not even close to spicy. They gave fortune cookies and it was literally like a chewing gum, very very old. When I called and complained about the issue she didn't care to fix it and all she said is thank you. The food was very good. My first time there, general tso's was amazing, the ginger chicken was delicious, tender ribs and crunchy chicken fingers, the rice and lo mein were worth it. All arrived hot and fresh. Only con I can imagine is that the fried rice was very basic. No egg. No vegetables like carrots and onions. Just tasty fried rice with pork in it. This does not take stars away, it's just a critique. The rice is good. It's got flavor. I hope to have the same experience every time. read more

Ordered Veggie Lo Mein and it was stone cold and the only vegetsbles in it were sliced green peppers and it was dry with no type of sauce. Also ordered Kung Po Beef there was NO kick to it and the beef was over cooked in a too thick sauce that tasted like flour. Our go-to Chinese takeout place in Winchester recently closed. Been driving by this place for years so thought we'd give it a try. Called in an order of Combinations #9 and #19 with a Hot and Sour Soup. Order was ready in 20 minutes. Food was super hot and portions are very generous. Staff was very friendly and asked if I'd like extra sauces. This is your standard American style Chinese takeout. Street-side parking only which can make for a difficult pick-up unless you opt to park in the Woburn center lot behind the restaurants, adjacent to the bowling alley. Four stars for hot, freshly cooked food, large portions for the price point, quick service, and friendly staff. We'll be ordering from Oriental again! read more

The food here can be hit or miss. Sometimes it's freshly cooked and other times (IMO) it's just made in batches to speed things up. But hey, you can still get some pretty good Chinese food here, even if it's not the absolute best you'll ever have. read more

We ordered here today and it was great. Everyday there are 2 different lunch specials. Of course they have other "regular" lunch combo plates ass well as the full menu. The people here have a little too much attitude for my tastes. The food is OK. Not spectacular but not bad. I had a bad experience here while ordering last week though. The waitstaff took down our order wrong, and when we got back we realized a bunch of stuff was missing (no wonder it was so cheap) So I wen't back to get what we needed and when I went to pay they wouldn't accept my credit card, as it was below the $10 minimum, even though I explained to them that I had to buy this due to their mistake. I left, got cash came back and paid for my order, but decided I would never go back there due to their attitude. As an interesting note, I recently heard on the news that while it is not illegal to have a minimum limit or charge an extra fee in order to use charge cards, it is agains the contracts that the businesses have to sign with V ISA and Mastercard, so technically no restaurants are allowed to impose minimum orders to use cradit cards, or apply extra fees. read more

I grew up in Woburn and this was the place (after Weylu's closed down) that we would get our chinese from. The owners of the place are wonderful and if you are a regular then they will remember your order even it its a large order (we ordered a lot of stuff all the time!) It is mainly a take out place but you can sit inside and eat while watching soap operas or the news on the tv which is comfortable. The lo mein is the best around because of the thick egg noodles and I love their crab rangoons! I can not find anywhere else where the crab rangoons are so filling and delicious! I live in East Boston now and every so often I will call them up and tell them I am coming and she knows exactly what I like to eat and remembers my name! This place is a definite place to try out and make it a regular take out chinese place, oh and the prices are wonderful as well! read more

This place drew my attention due to it's enormous "Oriental" sign on the top of the building and a sign (just below) that says "OPEN" every time I drive by. - We call it the "Oriental Open". As usual, I didn't have high expectations going in and kept an open mind. But, I must say that the beef teriyaki was the most tender I've ever had...I'm dying to order it again! The lo mein was also tasty, and I liked that they prepared it differently than most Chinese restaurants. I ordered the Special House lo mein variety. The noodles were wider than most lo mein dishes I've had, and they added french-cut string beans which gave it a nice touch and an added "crunch". (I hate it when the entire dish is mush.) Plus, they added plenty of pork strips, chicken, and shrimp. I find protein very satisfying! I also like the fact that they're open until 11pm every day, even on Sundays and holidays, and their prices are very reasonable. read more

They deliver lots of greasy combination food in a giant styrophome vat (like you get BBQ joints). I can report that there were no attitudes. HOWEVER, while waiting for my order, one of the cooks went on break and started SMOKING A CIGARETTE. He was sitting in a chair to the left of the kitchen - inside! I hate cigarette smoke. I hate it even more when I'm inside a restaurant. As for the food... Well... It's Ok. It's not horrible, but it's bland. I ordered appetizers: chicken teriyaki, beef teriyaki, crab ragoons, chicken fingers, and pork fried rice. Everything was very dry and not as flavorful as I felt they should have been. I'm glad I tried this place, If for no other reason than to provide an updated review. You have never heard of $3 lunch specials? Well, you need to get yourself over here to witness it yourself because what I will tell you will sound illogical. A choice of two combinations a day for six days a week during lunch time, you get a heaping pile of pork fried rice and two delicious appetizers. The offers range from a couple of crab ragoons, chicken wings, egg foo young, fried chicken crisps, pork strips, etc depending on which day it is. You can only chose between their combinations that day and no swapping between them. It is a lot of food for very little money. If you work in the area, this is definitely a diner's secret. *** Update 6/7/07 I agree with Erin B. that the lo mein is definitely prepared differently here than other Chinese restaurant. I much prefer it here! The noodles are like thick egg noodles. Not quite udon-thick, but not skinny like rice vermicelli. I literally grew up on this place as it has been a family favorite for years. The family who runs it is really nice and always accommodating - and they have our typical order memorized, so hows that for customer loyalty? Lo-mein is awesome, the spring rolls are excellent, out of this world pot-stickers with soft shells and meaty fillings and the beef is always delicious and tender, unlike some dried out versions at other places. Oriental has some good American-style Chinese food. I'm a fan of their lobster sauce, teriyaki beef on a stick, chicken wings, bbq pork, wanton soup, egg drop soup...no vegetable dish here has made its way to my regular rotation, but I haven't given up. Most dishes are seasoned well and don't require adding any salt, pepper, soy sauce packets, duck sauce, etc. The flavors are good to me out of the box. This is one of those take-out places that tips in a delivery menu as part of your weekly snailmail packet of local ads and supermarket circulars. Yes they deliver, but only after 5PM. I actually only recently set foot in here after many, many delivery orders. Lunch specials are cheap, cheap, cheap. The eat-in area is sparse except for a big TV. It's also downright chilly inside when it's cold outside. They may not have my eat-in business, but they have my take-out/delivery business. read more
