Great authentic cuisine! We really enjoy dining in at Taipei because everything is always so darn delicious! There are plenty of big and small tables and the waiters are very nice. They have a huge menu with some images to choose from. It's always so hard to decide because we want to order everything everytime we are craving good Chinese food! As soon as you sit down they bring you a tea pot full of hot tea which is really nice. This time we wanted to try the spicy fried fish and the sand pumpkin and mini shrimp fried rice. The fish was nice and spicy and very crunchy! The sand pumpkin had a nice texture and it was cooked perfectly. Every dish was literally made to order because each one came out hot and one right after the other. By the end of the meal we were stuffed and satisfied and we were happy to have leftovers to take home. This place never disappoints! read more

Service was strange... hot tea came to table right away and was watered down and minimal tea flavor. I ordered a sesame chicken lunch special which came with soup egg drop soup, spring roll , white rice. I ordered a side of beef teriyaki . Waitress asked 1 or 2 teriyaki ? I assumed how many teriyaki sticks or small or large options? I said 2. Egg drop soup and spring roll shows up with duck sauce... egg drop soup was very good. Spring roll was excellent and filling was fresh. Then Next 2 orders of beef teriyaki with 4 sticks each show up??? She takes away my duck sauce from my spring roll... and leaves me with no duck sauce for my beef teriyaki? I now ask for duck sauce for teriyaki? She brings out a hot spicy sauce instead of duck sauce ? The sesame chicken was very good but more sweet and sour sauce flavor than sesame ? The beef teriyaki was extremely tough meat and I had to ask for a knife to cut up? No glass of water as I saw other tables getting water? I had to ask for water as tea wasn't doing it for me ? Then another duck sauce shows up I didn't ask for but glad it did arrive and was needed? Teriyaki had great flavor but tough like beef jerky and one order would have been enough to tolerate without the confusion of getting 2 orders and then also charged for two ? I found the service confusing and not a smooth outing? Then both the waitresses disappeared while waiting for the check . I asked for a glass of water at this point. No fortune cookie, pineapple or exit offering with the check? All in all I was confused.. but I would eat again here and assume staff trying ... next time I'll be very clear what 1 vs 2 means. For a late 2pm Saturday lunch I stopped by Taipei Gourmet. The establishment was one-third full, so I received a seat immediately. I ordered the beef noodle soup ($15.95) and vegetarian leek pie ($9.95). Both came out within 10 minutes. The beef noodle soup had the thin flat wheat noodle ubiquitous in Taiwanese noodle soups. The soup was well-flavored with stock. Too many of these sorts of places over-rely on soy sauce, making a salty yet thin and underflavored bowl. Not here. I will nitpick and say that I would like larger chunks of beef, not the sort of cubed stew beef you see at the supermarket. The vegetarian leek pie (as it's called in the menu) is a pastry stuffed with chive (not leek), egg, and vermicelli. It was decently salted and hot. The portion sizes were quite satisfying as well. Closing thought - this place has, so far, the closest to what I would consider a decent bowl of Taiwanese beef noodle soup I've had in the Boston metro area so far. This is a hidden gem within Lexington, MA. The restaurant offers authentic Taiwanese cuisine. They specialize on Fish with Fermented Cabbage. We didn't get to try it since our kids wanted other dishes. But I was envious watching the other table order it. The juicy dumplings were a hit with our kids. This restaurant is your no frills Chinese restaurant. It looks like a typical Chinese restaurant built in the 80's or 90's with it's aesthetics and interior design. Be sure to park in the lot to the left of the restaurant and not in the plaza lot or risk being towed. From the name, you would think this is a Taiwanese restaurant, but it's mainly a Sichuan restaurant in disguise as most of the dishes are spicy and there's not that many Taiwanese dishes on the menu. For appetizers, we got the crunchy cucumbers which was good for relieving some of the spiciness of the other foods. It was ok, but didn't seem the most fresh and wasn't crunchy. The favorite dish was the fish fillet with tofu. It also had fried beans on top which gave it a nice crispy texture. The sauce was slightly sweet and complimented the rice. The runner up was the lamb dry pot. It has a decent amount of lamb and the veggies had a lot of flavor. The spicy and sour beef rice noodles was the spiciest dish by far! Unfortunately, we found the noodles too hard to eat the first time so we did have to send the dish back. The second time was better and the noodles were softer. The service was good, we asked many questions about different dishes. The food came out quickly (all out by 10 minutes of ordering). Really should be 3.5 stars. We had 3 cups tofu and eggplant, dried tofu with shredded pork, and Peapod shoots with garlic. I also tried hot and sour soup. Dining room was clean and pleasant. Server was very busy and seemed harried. He did bring us tea when we sat down, which was nice. We had to ask for water. Soup was more sour than hot, not at all memorable and I wouldn't order it again. The 3 cups dish was good - not greasy at all, tender tofu, and eggplant cooked just right. The dried tofu dish was ok - could have used a bit more heat and was a bit dry. The pea shoots were a bit tough, but a nice complement. Finally, they do not serve brown rice. The menu is quite extensive and I wish they had pictures for their dishes or descriptions because when ordering online some of the dishes have the same name. Initially we sat at one of the long tables but soon after everyone arrived they gave us one of the round tables with the lazy susan rotating center. We ordered a bunch of dishes - kung pao chicken, MaPo tofu, a lamb dish that came in a pot, beef dish, squash dish, a green leafy vegetable dish, and a couple other dishes none in total plus steamed white rice and green tea. There was a lot of food and it was all very good and tasty. Meats were tender and flavorful. We were quite satisfied and full with all the food! We also got some leftovers to bring home lol! Always a great experience here! Have been a couple times in person and also ordered takeout from there many times. Great authentic Chinese food. Super fresh. Great value for the price - large quantities but still great quality. Friendly and quick service, both in person and when ordering takeout - always ready on time, packed well, and never missing or any incorrect dishes. Some of my favorite dishes have been the spicy fish fillets, beef chow mein noodles, and the hot pot style stew with intestine (really nice flavor). First time visiting and we had a great experience! We came on Sunday and the place was packed! Roughly a 30 min wait from when we arrived at 1:20. It smelled so good, it was hard to wait! Once we sat down we ordered the soup dumplings, shrimp dumplings, chicken & broccoli, and the fish filet with chili. Our waitress warned us the fish would be spicy and it was perfect (not too spicy for us but we do like spice). The food was super fresh and the portions were EXCELLENT. There was so much fish that between 3 people we had leftovers. The soup dumplings were good, liked the thinner dumpling skin, but not amazing. The shrimp dumplings were unfortunately a miss so I wouldn't get them again (small/lacking in flavor). The chicken with broccoli was super fresh & a nice lighter dish to have along with the fish. The General Tso's chicken has barely any chicken, mostly the dough. Many of the pieces lacked the meat altogether. It was like eating fried dough. The cashier claimed that this is the proper way. I think it's ridiculous to even call it General Tso' CHICKEN when there is barely even any meat. This is a small one room restaurant serving pretty authentic Taiwanese food. We got the 炸酱面 (soybean paste noodles with pork), soup dumplings, Sichuan boiled fish, this fried chicken dish with basil, and some dim sum items including the beef wrapped in scallion pancakes. The noodles were the best part of the meal--refreshing and flavorful without being too heavy. The soup dumplings were great for the area and the skin was not too thick or doughy. Dim sum items were also pretty standard. The fish was kind of strange. I feel like there was too much chili oil, not enough fish pieces compared to tofu, and the fish was fried and then put in the soup instead of the soft fish pieces we are used to in this dish. The "popcorn chicken" dish was kind of salty and I wasn't really feeling it. We had family friends recommend this but it was not that great to be honest. It consists of little reject pieces of chicken fried in some kind of batter and flavored with basil. My mom also ordered the vegetarian chicken tofu (?) and she said it was horrible. We didn't end up finishing. Overall I'm glad we tried this place. Food is pretty good. This place is especially good for takeout; they are really fast and the food comes very hot and ready (a little TOO fast... I suspect a lot of these dishes aren't cooked to order). Let's talk about quality first. The shacha noodles are spot on. The noodles have a nice doughy texture - they taste hand-pulled. The flavor is really good with the sauce and the beef is tender and juicy. The pork juicy buns (小笼包) are also really soupy and flavorful with awesome wrappers. The Taiwanese fried popcorn chicken is okay, tasty but not the best. The pan-fried pork dumplings (生煎包) were okay but not crispy enough on the bottom. Everything else is solid and won't disappoint, but also not amazing. The prices are quite high, so I'd rate this place a 3.7/5 if I could. Flounder filet with black bean sauce is over $14 for not that much food. The Chinese-style twice-cooked pork is over $15. Don't order any of the specialty items and just stick with dishes that are closer to $10. I haven't had their lunch menu but that looks promising as well. All in all, it's a good takeout place and they have some solid dishes, but be careful of overpaying. The staff are very friendly! And talking to the waitresses they thought we were crazy when we went in there asking for 4 orders of soup dumplings. The first time that I came here, we ordered that, but we also split a bowl of beef noodle soup. And yes, it was a pretty big soup, and the person I went with loves food as much as I do. Anyways, onto the review. I came here on two occasions: on Sunday and then again on Monday. I have to say the crowd size of those two days were massive. On Sunday there was barely any seats and the parking lot was filled that I had to park next door. On Monday, it was empty, which means if you don't want to deal with so many people...Go during the week. The food: Beef noodle soup? On point. Xiao Long Bao (XLB)? On point. The ribs? Great, but could be better, but still it's amazing. There's really no down sides, at least in my mind. I wished there was more Taiwan restaurants down in the south, but sadly there isn't. Boston, you have to appreciate what you have here! I definitely recommend this place for XLB along with the taiwanese beef noodle soup. TG is a five-star for reasons other than just the food quality. I have dwelled in Arlington for many years and my crib is just down the street on Massachusetts Avenue. I decided to finally give TG a whirl when my "ant" and uncle and cousin and hubb and their teens and "tweenagers" wanted to meet up for a post Christmas dinner along with my One and my dad. I called earlier that day to "warn" TG that eleven peeps were going to be there at 7:15-ish. This is du rigueur in my book of altruism since no place wants a stampede to appear unannounced at such a teenie place. The menu is wicked vast and includes "the usual" Americanized stuff like 'Goons and Kung Pow this and that. But there are also offerings such as Pig Intestines and other good stuff. My "unk" ordered a bunch of things like the 'Shroom Hotpot and Shrimp Fried Rice and more. I ordered Hot n' Sour Soup and Spicy Fish Fillet and Fried Tofu. My One had 'Goons and Mango Shrimp and Orange Beef and others had Hong Kong Beef and more... All foodstuffs were prepared to order and sizzling hot and very good. No Kowloon-style commissary-type left-overs or room-temp food or bulk-made stuff. I was wicked impressed with our waitress and her "on-the-ballness" when it came to handling the chaos of our large party of peeps. She kept as cool as The Fonz when it came to juggling our many questions and reneging of orders and requests for condiments and bevs and stuff during the sow-down session. The prices were wicked reasonable especially considering that this is Lexington. My fish dish was very copious and was barely over 10 quid or so. The price goes up the 2nd time since March. A little disappointed but I compared with other restaurants by actually visiting many of them. Taipei Gourmet has good quality food. The waitress was very impatient, probably because we arrived at 8:10pm and she was eager to go home. She refused some dishes which we liked. We picked three, the pickled fish soup was fine and the shi gua veggie was okay (as oily as any restaurant). The bad dish is the raw-grilled bao zi, as they are big steamed bao zi with a little faked grilling. Authentic Shanghai raw-grilled bao zi should be small and never steamed (raw grilled only). We came by for lunch on Sunday and the place was PACKED! Luckily, we were still seated pretty quickly and after ordering, had food in front of us within minutes! We ordered the Beef Rolls, Soup Dumplings, and Shrimp Dumplings. The Beef Rolls were pretty good. I grew up eating beef rolls so I can be annoyingly picky about my beef rolls. I look for the right green onion pancake texture, the ideal ratio of meat to onions to sauce, and the optimal crunchiness. Overall, the ratio and flavor was spot on, but I wish the pancake was a bit more flaky and crispy instead of the thicker, crunchy skin we got. It wasn't bad, but it didn't totally wow me. The soup dumplings were good and I def recommend them! The skin was thin and had the right amount of chew to it, and the meaty filling was tasty and super flavorful. The shrimp dumplings were a bit of a letdown. The skin was thick and overly chewy. In general, it tasted more like a store brought shrimp dumpling than anything homemade. My experience here was good. The service was meh. But the food was delicious. I had the home made lo mein with chicken and shrimp. It was bomb. We had the beef dumplings and the shrimp dumplings. I thought the beef were amazing and my daughter and husband liked the shrimp ones a lot so I guess they were both good. My husband ordered the tofu general Tso's and I just assumed it came with a side of rice or noodles but it didn't. That was strange to me. I believe most places you get rice or noodles with it. We've been coming here a few times now and we love this place all the more after each visit. Cleanliness - 5 stars. The place is bright and clean and bathroom is well kept. Decor - 3 stars. Not much to look at but that's how you know you are getting great bank for your buck for excellent chinese food. Food - 5 stars. We come here on e weekends so we can order from their weekend only menu. We love the soy milk, both sweet or savory. Love the rice ball and Yes we dip to rice ball into the savory soy milk. Beef noodle soup is a must try. Steamed soup dumplings are the best. Order the soup dumplings before you even get the menu so they can get those meat babies into the steamer ASAP! The scallion pancakes are great appetizers, or kick it up a notch and get the scallion pancake wrapped roast beef. And so many more good eats. We must pace ourselves and come back over and over again. Staff - 5 stars. Super friendly! We ordered the soy milk but they were out. My daughter was very disappointed. Before you know it, they brought out 1/2 a bowl and apologized for not having enough to give us a full serving, so they gave us what they have for free. Thank you for your kind gesture!
