Got takeout for dinner and it really hits the spot. We ordered the two popular dishes: lamp noodles and spicy/sour pork noodles. We got the order quickly after the order was placed. I got the spicy/sour soup and while tasty, it was super oily. I get the oil is flavor but I was able to scoop out a small bowl of oil from the top of my bowl. I have to say I was taken aback by my lunch at Gene's. It was a rainy day and I was craving soup, but also wanting to get some veggies in during lunch. I saw Gene's house noodle soup came with carrots and green beans and some other miscellaneous veggies along with the housemade broth, noodles and pork. Great. Placed an order for that along with a tea egg. The soup smelled incredible and came out piping hot--I absolutely hate it when my hot food comes out just warm so points for that. It had a tempting aroma of cumin, cinnamon, star anise and other spices I'm not sure I could identify. The pork was tender and abundant, and the half-spicy broth was enjoyable. But as I dug deeper, it started getting weirder. Under the meat and a scattering of cilantro I did find the hand-pulled noodles. And I also found vegetables: perfect cubes of carrot and potato, plus peas and green beans that looked like they'd started out either frozen or canned. The veggie medley was not bad, per se, but I did find it odd. More like what I'd put in a pot pie filling than a noodle soup. Meanwhile I wasn't expecting the smattering of cilantro, and there was no noticeable "egg skin" as described on the menu. The whole dish felt just kind of random, not intentional. It was enough to fill me, and the tea egg was fantastic, but I didn't feel like the soup held up to the rave reviews of other dishes or my expectations based on the menu description. Would I go back? I order takeout from here when I get a hot and sour noodle soup craving and it's so satisfying - especially if it's cold out. The hand pulled noodles are really good, and the sheer volume of noodles and meat is impressive in one order for the price. Hot and sour broth has just the right amount of tang and heat, but be warned that if you order Extra Spicy it really is spicy! The handpulled lamb noodle soup and hot and sour dumpling soup are my go-to's. Tried the house noodle soup which didnt have as much flavor as the others, and the lamb flatbread which was tasty but very greasy. Ordering online is very easy and typically very quick - my last order was ready in 3 mins. There is a $0.99 booking fee, but I don't mind given the huge quantity and flavor for each dish. Ingredients are fresh. Flatbread is pretty good but the lamb is very gamey and while the caramelized onions are a nice touch, they do another there sandwich with them. It's a small shop that can use some updates but whatever. Food is good! There is no table service and there's very few small tables so it's not for large groups. Bring just one friend LOL. Your food will be at the counter on a lunch tray and to go containers even while eating in but that's ok. The kids allow u to take leftovers home which we did! We had the hot and sour hand pulled noodles, the lamb hand pulled noodles, lamb skewers, and both the lamb and pork flatbread sandwiches. The noodles were both very flavorful and warming to the soul. The hot and sour hand pulled noodles soup is the best I've ever had. The lamb skewers were tender and tasty and my tip is rip a piece of flatbread and put some of the lamb skewer meat in between and dip in the noodle broth. The flatbread sandwiches can use more seasoning or herbs but still really good. The meat was tender and juicy. It got really busy when we went there around lunch. I have no idea what happens to this place. It used to be a very authentic chinese restaurant. But it's not now. They even put parsley instead of cilantro. Chinese food never use parsley dude! Outstanding bang for the buck, plus Quality/Authenticity ...and now, with all the modern Conveniences. Couldn't ask for more! PS. Came here for the first time and ordered takeaway through Uber Eats. Ordered their hand-pulled noodles with extra veggies and a tea egg. Total came out to around $15. What's Hot - Quality. Pretty delish! The hand pulled noodles were definitely chewy and flavorful. I can't be completely certain they were freshly made in-house, but they were definitely tasty. The tea egg was flavorful and I could tell it had been stewed pretty well. The marinade went through the whole egg. It's not easy to find delicious hand pulled noodles, especially ones that are wide, chewy, and flavorful. This definitely hit the spot. They have Chinese on their menu and their Woburn location is run by Chinese immigrants. In my experience, that lends to more authenticity for ethnic restaurants. - Menu. Pretty good variety. There's different meats (ie: lamb, chicken, beef), vegetarian options that also allow you to go vegan. It's not an extensive menu, but I like that, especially because this is type of Chinese food is more localized (ie: hand pulled noodles and flatbread). - Service. Pretty good, responsive, and quick. Because I ordered through Uber Eats, the earliest time option I was given was 1 hour later. I called the restaurant to ask if my order could be prepared and picked up earlier. They confirmed they received my order, but hadn't prepared it yet, because it was going to be prepared closer to the specified pick-up time on Uber Eats. Because I asked for it to be ready sooner, rather than later, the staff told me it could be ready in 10 minutes, which worked out perfectly. Food was ready pretty quick and all wrapped up and ready for me to pick up when I arrived. - Location. Conveniently located in Woburn. One of the things I appreciate about the location is that there is plenty of parking close by. Much of the parking is timed parking, but it isn't difficult to find parking within walking distance of the restaurant. Definitely helpful. - Health and safety. During this time of the pandemic, especially because the CDC is relaxing mask mandates, it was reassuring to see the sign taped on their front door requesting customers to wear masks. Additionally, when I arrived, I saw their staff wear masks. I also saw hand-sanitizer available for customers and staff to use. What's Not - Portions. The noodles alone are around $12 and the portions were not large. For example, it's not a large bowl of noodle soup. The noodles alone wouldn't have gotten me full. What helped me get full was the additional veggies and tea egg, which cost me additional money. Be prepared that you may need to order extra items, especially if you're hungry. - Price. To be fair, it's not the most expensive Chinese restaurant. However, I'm surprised there are extra costs for add-ons. For example, extra veggies was an additional $2.50 and the tea egg was an extra $2. Call me old-school, especially because I've traveled and lived overseas in parts of Asia, but I'm not used to additional costs for such items. It was a good amount of extra veggies, which added a freshness to the flavor. The tea egg was definitely flavorful and I could taste it had been stewed well. Genes is great. I'm a spicy hand pulled (hand carved, etc) noodle type of guy. Theirs is yummy. I have many places I go for hand pulled noodles and each place's flavor is slightly different. But I like them all. Genes also does nice soups which I've had in the past and enjoy thoroughly. I'm on the noodle kick and will likely eat here weekly until I get tired of the noodles (which might be impossible) as I have a commitment nearby. Yay for commitments! One gripe: closing the dining hall and going to take out only at 7:30 is a bit early. But I'm aware that this is the burbs and you have to run your business on experience. So I get it. One other point: I met the owner a long time ago and he seemed to be a nice happy guy who loved sharing his home regions cooking. An overall good attitude to have in my opinion! read more

I think ultimately this place was 3.5 stars. We had been to the location in Boston a number of times and decided to try the Woburn spot since it was closer to our grandfather. Good value and generous servings. They do take credit card now! The hand pulled noodles were deliciously chewy, authentic, and never ending. The saving grace of our meal. I wish I had just gotten a noodle dish, but the broth ruined it for me. It was a great amount of spicy but just wasn't flavorful and didn't come together. Generous amount of meat but could use more fixings. Really, really did not like the roujiamo. The "flatbread" was too heavy and tasted like pizza dough. Very Americanized and not what I was expecting at all. The lamb skewers were good when you got a good piece but inconsistent. Some pieces were just pure fat, and some skewers had more meat than others. I have tried Gene's Flatbread Cafe in Chinatown, Ma so the Woburn location is being compared to that. With such a good first time experience in the Boston location, the Woburn location really pale in comparison. Although the Woburn location is a tad larger than the Chinatown location, it is also dirty. The table and chairs are sticky and the walls and windows could use a wipe down. The cafeteria style is very uninviting with the rocky tables and flimsy metal chairs. You order at the front, cash only, and then wait for your number to be called. There is extra sauce and napkins up front. There really isn't much of an atmosphere here. Best order and go. The noodles here at the Woburn location is much much too thick compared to its Boston location. And although we went on a Saturday afternoon, it felt as if we were served noodles that sat out all day rather than being freshly made. Also, it felt like they were not made by a skilled chef. Still, if this is your first time, and if you like garlicky and chewy noodles then I would recommend the hand pulled noodles. The hand pulled noodle at this location is much too thick for my liking. The location in Boston does it just right. My next recommendation is the cold noodles, which is only served on the weekends. If you like a simple cold noodle dish that has a vinegar sauce base then this is good noodle dish to try. If you don't like sour soup kind of noodles, you may want to avoid this. The noodle are thin. They are nothing like the hand pulled noodles. The portion size is very small. It has lightly blanched bean sprouts to add a slight crunch. For appetizer, we ordered a variety of appetizer from the menu. I wish they did quality control on the lamb skewers since one of the skewers we have had huge chunks of lamb fat and no meat. Another complaint is that the skewers came out cold and not made to order. Then again, I can't complain at $1.50 a stick. The pork stomach came with a sour sauce, sliced cucumber, and sliced carrot. The sliced beef came with a saltier sauce than the sliced pork stomach and came with cilantro. The meat is chewy and tendony. Overall, good to try but I would not order either dish again. The tea egg at this location was overly salty. One good thing about the pork sandwich and lamb sandwich is that it was meatier and more flavorful than the ones I had in Boston. Quite possibly the best Chinese food in Boston, and definitely the best Xian food. The hand pulled noodles are long, chewy, stretchy, and don't stick together even after the drive home. The cumin lamb noodles come with a generous topping of fresh carrots and bean sprouts to contrast the well-balanced smoky, spicy, sour sauce beneath. The pork intestine noodle soup comes with mung bean noodles in addition to the hand noodles for double the goodness. The soup is nice and sour, and the intestines are Slippery and chewy. I'm sure the spicy version is even better, but I wanted to share with a toddler. I've been afraid to order roujiamo other places because the flatbread is often stale or tasteless. No worries here, as you can tell it's made fresh, and it would be delicious even without the filling. read more

In my foodie journey restaurant-hopping, I've decided to give this spot a try. I believe there is a handful of locations for this restaurant. This Woburn location has free town parking lot right in front of it across the street. The street is also busy so it was one of those 'run across when you see an opportune moment' types of streets. Here is a quick rant first before getting into the food review. I ordered on Doordash for a pickup. I know restaurants typically inflate their prices on these 3rd party apps but I had credit value on Doordash that I wanted to use. When I got there, one of the employees told me to order directly on their website next time instead of using Doordash, which I thought was inappropriate. I know small businesses are trying to max their earnings during this pandemic and that they have to take a hit on paying commission if we used 3rd party apps like Doordash. But I did discovered their restaurant using Doordash and I paid the inflated price even though it was using my credits, so I really didn't think it was appropriate for them to tell the customers how to order when they are clearly offering a Doordash option. Anyways, as for food, we got the flatbread sandwiches that their restaurant is named for. We got both the pork and the lamb versions. If I were to recommend one, I'd say definitely go with the lamb. The pork version was bland. It was basically pulled pork without any flavor. The pork version was marketed on their menu as having traditional five spices but I did not see nor taste any of those spices. The lamb version was more flavorful with the cumin and onions. The flatbread itself is dense but decent for the overall sandwich design. We also tried out their cumin lamb hand-pulled noodles. This is where I couldn't tolerate the stinginess. If you look at the attached picture, the bowl of noodles was packed with bean sprouts and carrots. Underneath all that vegetable, there was very little proteins. There was probably a tablespoonful of tiny lamb pieces spread out on the noodles. The noodles were thick and in my opinion, could have been "pulled" out more. I usually prefer that my noodles have more surface area and less volume, so the flatter the noodles will give the better the coverage of spices and flavors, and therefore makes it a better experience. Overall, I would come back for the lamb flatbreads. Those were the stars of the show. At this point, the others were a miss for me. Hope that helps. read more

Having seen accolades for their pulled noodles in hot and sour soup as one of the best 50 things to eat around Boston (in Boston Magazine), I noticed the storefront, while I was having my taxes prepared, in Woburn. I thought, "What the heck... I'm here". For under $12 including tax, it was a substantial lunch. In fact, the one bowl is plenty for dinner. The broth is unctuous, with different textures of meat (possibly beef and lamb?), and those amazing, chewy noodles that are so weighed down with everything in the bowl, they were almost Impossible to pick up with chopsticks. Other items include the same broth with soup dumplings, skewers of lamb, and their flat bread sandwiches. Whether you order ahead or in person, you use one of their tablets, you select your items, choose instructions (half spicy, extra spicy, side of hot sauce, etc.) Everything is made to order. Fantastic, just like the one in Chinatown. The go-to option is hand-pulled noodles. If you are hungrier or want meat, get cumin lamb hand-pulled noodles. The noodles are freaking amazing, chewy and flavorful. I could eat those all day! The cumin lamb is also very good (it has a little but too many vegetables/beansprouts, but I guess that forces me to be healthier..) Be sure you mix THOROUGHLY when you get the noodles, or you will get a mouthful of really strong garlic in one bite. It's actually a really unpleasant experience, so learn from my mistakes. Stopped in on an early Saturday evening dinner after a haircut at the barbershop next door. Ordered the House noodle soup # 5, a lamb skewer, and one tea egg for good measures. Food came out quick since I'm on senior citizen dinner time. For soups, I always go for broth then contents. This broth was tasty. A melody and depth of flavor, a touch of spiciness, and tart. The combination works. The bowl was filled to the brim. Noodles at the bottom, veggies in the middle, and topped with meat. Fresh cilantro finished it off. The standard broth is not spicy hot, there are containers of ground chili peppers in oil on the counter. I did not use any additional spices as I wanted to taste the kitchen version. The lamb skewers was very tender, doused with fine red pepper flakes accompanied by flavors to entertain. The egg was properly saturated, the brown flavors seeped deep into the egg. All items are on the saltier side for me. The house noodle soup and egg weren't The freshest, kind of as if they cooked for a couple of days. The noodles in the #5 house noodle soup should not have been served, soggy and leftover from lunch is what the take-away memory is. Also to note, the noodles in the #5 do not taste as if they are freshly made noodles. Regular store bought is what I tasted. As of this review (March 11, 2018), I have been to Gene's establishment in Woburn and prior to the Westford location. I recently moved to the greater Boston area a few months ago and love Xi'an's Famous Foods. I was told Gene's is a parallel comparison. I am still searching for that parallel comparison here in Boston. Overall, I'll still keep trying different things on Gene's menu, hoping to find an item that shines. Unfortunately to my surprise, I was quite dissatisfied with this place. I figured it was going to be a little takeout joint with several seatings inside but it doesn't look well-maintained and there was an unpleasant scent lingering in the air. It definitely was not the smell of the food. Hand-Pulled Noodles- It looks exactly like the photos, however, not sure if they were meant to be cooked until it was completely firm and too tough to eat. The seasoning is a little mild and garlicky but not my cup of tea. Maybe we got the bad batch. Tea Eggs- Tasted like regular boiled eggs to me. Lamb Kabobs- Very dry. My sister enjoyed them though. Overall Service: The 'Cash Only' sign is small and not noticeable. After I ordered I realized it was cash only and was told there's an ATM next door in the convenient store. The food was just okay in taste, sloppily served but surely edible. If you were to label this as Northwest Chinese food, sure, this food becomes passable. But advertised as Xi'an style, none of the dishes really hits the authentic mark. 羊肉泡馍 (Lamb Bread Stew) - Lack of proper flavor profile aside, the bread used is not the proper unleavened bread found in authentic versions of this dish. As a result, their bread (made with oil) crumbles when you break the bread apart by hand. 老西安酱牛肉 (Five Spiced Beef Shank, Cold Cut) - served fairly fatty, uneven pieces. Aesthetics aside, this isn't Xi'an style spiced beef. The color and taste profile were both blatantly off. 凉皮 (Liang Pi Noodles) - The noodles were well made and properly garnished with washed wheat gluten and bean sprouts, but the taste left something to be desired. For reference, this was a wheat washed noodle not the rice version. Both rice and wheat are authentic to Xi'an. 泼扯面 (Hand Pulled Oil Noodles) - Just okay. This restaurant is riding the recent wave of Northwestern/Xi'an Chinese cuisine, but their food needs some work. read more
