V1. Stir-Fry Homemade Bean Curd

Ever since moving from Jersey been looking for an authentic Hunan place and this one is probably the best I've had yet. Their homemade bean curd is phenomenal compared to the store bought one. - Stir fry smoked pork with bean curd: Must have, the bean curd with the pork is amazing. - Pork intestines with green pepper: Well done pork intestines is hard to find and when stir fry with spicy peppers is to die for. - Braised pork belly: sucker for big chunks of pork belly and taste was spot on.

H6. Spicy Cucumber Salad. First timer, didn't disappoint, reasonable pricing, definitely coming back!

Love it! Authentic Chinese food here, definitely worth a try or if you wanna challenge yourself with spicy food.

E15. Stir-Fry Shredded Pork Intestine with Green Pepper

The service was AMAZING, and the food was even better. The portions were good, and the restaurant was very spacious!

I love their Hunan dishes. portion is sizable and service is fast and attending. The interior decor is nice and modern. There is a huge parking lot across the street for free. I have been there three times and glad to see they are getting more customers. My only complaint is the price for white rice. Rice is unavoidable for these salty and spicy hunan dishes.

The food here is fairly authentic Hunan, quite spicy. The layout is awkward but if you give this place a chance it's quite worth it.

I already loved the Brookline location. We were 15 minutes away from the Winchester location, so…read moretook the drive. The layout of the restaurant is similar to the Brookline location, with the private booths on the right and special booths on the left, main seating area in the middle, and the bar seating towards the back. Only difference is the Brookline location has those cool matcha whisk structures, while this location has cool honeycomb structures. I would've loved to experience sitting in one of those. I always like to eat spicy so of course I got the Kyushu Spicy Tonkatsu Ramen. As always, broth is so flavorful with the perfect amount of spice. The ramen texture is my favorite, good amount of softness and waviness. The boiled egg is marinated just right, not too salty or sweet. The chashu pork is tender. I wanted to try their version of the spicy cucumbers. It's REALLY spicy. But also very good. The flavor reminds me of the Chinese chili oil sweet potato noodles, very spicy, kind of salty, and a strong taste of vinegar. I love snacking on it. The takoyaki is the best of course, perfectly soft and tender, with thin bonito shavings and great sauce. The fries are essentially seasoned the same way. Salted fries with the takoyaki sauces and bonito. The combo works very well together. Thai tea was good and service was great. If I'm ever in the area again, I'll stop by for another bowl.

We thought…read moreabout trying one of the combo options, but I ended up ordering the curry ramen, and upgrading it for $7 to include a Thai tea and bao bun. The bun was delicious, with tender pork and a flavorful sauce and I loved having the Thai tea to sip on. We also ordered the cucumber salad to share and it was nice and fresh and spicy. My curry ramen was delicious and hearty. My partner ordered the #2 and I really liked the pork in his bowl, I preferred it over the tonkatsu in mine. We ended our meal with matcha tiramisu and during the current promotion, we won an order of popcorn chicken to redeem on our next visit. The restaurant is cozy and they make use of the small space with their honeycomb wall. There are lots of employees working, so service is quick and we were able to call our sever to the table with a button when we wanted to order and pay.

The food was good and they have a lot of apps and food alongside sushi. The food was good but I felt like the sashimi and nigiri could be better. The sashimi slices weren't big and more poke style, and there was SO much rice on the nigiri. The place was on the smaller side and the staff was friendly for the most part. For about $25 you can pick from common rolls and sushi, like bbq eel, tuna, salmon and more. It's a pretty sizeable menu and you can do rolls or hand wraps even. There are some hot kitchen items too like gyoza, miso soup, chicken teriyaki and much more. If you upgrade to the deluxe menu, it's about $35. You're able to include some more items but I think a few you only could do 1 round for. Overall I didn't see the benefit of the deluxe for this night, as the basic menu had everything. Also knowing the quality would just be OK, I didn't bother upgrading. It's small inside and the outside looks pretty beat up. There is parking though. Service was solid. The food comes out fast. The menu says they will charge $1 for any left over pieces but I saw another table get the check while eating and didn't end up finishing a few. I guess it's more of a deterrent. That's fair. I honestly would go back. If you're a big eater and want to get a good deal on sushi, this spot is solid.

What I can remember is that all the food had great visual appeal. Additionally, the flavors from the main ingredient, sauce, and condiments were artfully balanced. I felt that none of the ingredients in the dishes I ordered were decorative. My only minor disappointment is the small portion (though I get that US portions are typically giant...). Service/wait-time/cleanliness (1.5/2): Great service even if there was only 1-2 waiters. Wait-time is decent. Cleanliness is impeccable. One minor negative is the positioning of some of the table that sees the fan above them--the fan sits just below the light bulb and creates a "strobe-light" effect at night. This was incredibly disturbing for me and I had to face diagonally downwards most of the time to avoid the flickering at the top-corner of my eyes. Price (0.5/1): As much as I love what they've created, I just feel the price for the portion we receive is on the expensive side. Rounded to 4 because I love the place.

**November 2025: Saturday Night Visit**…read more My friend and I had been driving all day and were staying at the Hyatt Medford Hotel just down the street. The Medford/Boston area seemed to all have limited parking so we were looking for a dinner option that didn't require us to drive since we were sick of circling around. Matsuba Izakaya was just a 5 minute walk away from the hotel so we we braved the cold for some delicious food. When we arrived at the restaurant we were escorted toward the back of the restaurant which was very warm and inviting. I ordered the mini omakase for $55 and was super impressed with the presentation and variety of seafood. I was presented a box of 9 different seafood offerings: uni, toro, salmon belly, fish liver, raw shrimp & fried shrimp head tempura, scallops. yellowtail, and squid. The uni and toro were fantastic, and I enjoyed everything else except for the salmon belly. For some reason the salmon belly wasn't ultra creamy - maybe it wasn't thawed enough, which is a shame because I love salmon sashimi. Nevertheless, for the presentation and price I was really impressed with the variety. It also came with a miso soup which really warmed me up quickly.

It comes with 2 bowls of miso soup, which were perfect on a cold winter night. The boat also includes a martini glass with seaweed salad, providing a refreshing, upscale palate cleanser when you need a moment's break from the fish. I was very impressed with the thick cuts for the sashimi, and the toppings on the nigiri also gave a tiny twist to the meal - while yuzu and jalapaeño are common pairings with raw fish, for example, the strawberry-on-salmon was a novel combo for me! The rolls also add appeal for any eating partners who enjoy their fish in another form. There isn't a lot of natural light/windows in the main seating area, so the lighting is dim and gives off an intimate ambiance that's perfect for a date night - no complaints about the service!

It's the perfect spot for a date night or grabbing drinks and dinner with friends. For appetizers, I highly recommend getting the 3 sampler of tuna, salmon, and yellowtail dumpling to try them all. While called dumpling, it's more like a delicious fish rice ball with special sauce. The house special udon with shrimp, scallop, and fish cake was also really good. I thoroughly enjoyed the chicken hibachi! It's good for being hungry because it comes with soup, veggies, rice, and some shrimp. It comes with yum yum sauce which goes well with everything and a sauce for the vegetables. The service was good, we did ask our questions about appetizers and she gave good recommendations. We didn't wait too long for the food. The ambiance here is great! They have Japanese decor on all the walls including paintings of cherry blossom, koi fish, Mt. Fuji, and even flowers on the roof. Overall, the food here is really good and this is a staple restaurant that I'll keep coming back to!
