Discovered this place while exploring the city. Had a really good time and delicious pastry and coffee. I got the seasonal drink, I think it was something akin to an iced cinnamon latte. It was surprisingly good and not overly sweet which is always a plus. Also got the cream cheese loaf, it was a dense, but moist delicious loaf. The barista offered to warm it up but I went for it cold. Tasted fine cold but I think I'd like to try it warmed next time. Mostly a self service type of ordering style with iPads, but I had help from the barista since my option wasn't available. I'm more of a fan of the interaction for coffee shops so that was nice it wasn't strictly "iPad order only". Interior was modern and inviting and a great place to work I would say. Overall, I'll be back! Also, for what it's worth, this is a pricier, gourmet coffee shop. I think two loaf/cakes and a beverage set me back $20+ dollars. Love this place!! Wow. Perfect temperature, high ceilings, friendly counter service. We came here for dessert and coffee only. Both did not disappoint. The "milk cake" with coconut on top was the perfect ending to a lunch. Light and flavorful. As for the coffee it was creamy and delicious. I rarely see affogato on a menu. I was disappointed in myself because I saw it after I ordered. Ugh!! My only complaint was the 5 cent fork given with the amazing cake. If I were the cake, I would be offended. My partner got the decaf coffee and I thought it tasted a little sour (however that may be because I am not a decaf drinker) so I would be wary of that. Hello new favorite coffee shop! Origin coffee lab is immediately being added to my top cafes in the DC area. Origin is nestled into Pentagon Row, making it the perfect spot to grab coffee on a walk, while shopping, or just to relax on the benches right outside. Origin has a complete coffee menu, with their beans roasted in house. Whether you're a latte person, or into chemex pourovers, this is the place for you. No caffeine? No problem. They can make "red" lattes, cappuccinos, and americanos-- made with rooibos tea instead of coffee but they're able to pull it like espresso so you don't miss out on the frothy milk with your tea-- or the instagrammable latte art ;) We ordered a flat white and a red cappuccino. Both delicious in their own right, but I was really impressed with the quality of the espresso in their flat white-- slightly sweet from just the coffee beans and milk for the perfect afternoon pick me up. We also settled on ordering their coffee milk cake (aka tres leches). If you've been following along on my reviews you *may* have noticed I'm on a quest to try every tres leches in every flavor I can find. I'm also a snob about it. If you care about the details, read on. Otherwise just go ahead and order it-- it's good! I can confidently say that this is one of the better tres leches I've had: a coarse and thick cake crumb, milk evenly soaked throughout, and just a thin layer of coffee frosting to balance the sweetness and tie everything together. The cake is a smidge denser than I normally prefer but given that I usually see the opposite problem in tres leches I'll give this one a pass and would order again. Their other pastries looked similarly tasty: carrot cake, chocolate cake, and cinnamon rolls; and I think there might be some meal options as well. Location: This is my favorite coffee shop in Arlington/Pentagon City. Tucked away in the Pentagon Row shopping center, it's perfect to grab a coffee and then run errands or hit the pentagon city mall. It's also a great location for brunch, especially if you have pets! Outdoor seating area is nearby is great when the weather is nice, and there's plenty of space for kiddos or pets to run around. It's also quiet and there's different types of seating inside (table, high tops, couch) so a good place to study or get some work done. Drink: My favorite craft coffee on the menu is the cinnamon spiced latte (i order with oat milk) which is great both hot or iced. All of their coffee drinks are incredible though, the beans they use are great quality, aromatic, and smooth. I can't wait to try their seasonal drinks in the fall/winter. If you're eating in the cafe, you'll get a traditional mug/cup. If you order to go, it'll be be in a to go cup! Food: My favorite thing on the food menu is by far the carrot cake - it might be the best I've ever had! The cream cheese frosting is phenomenal! For brunch, their pancakes are yummy and decadent. I also recommend the avocado toast (not pictured) but beware it has quite the kick to it! Get without the chili powder if you're not a fan of spice. What's great is all the ordering here is electronic, so if you want to make edits or accommodations for an order it's super easy to do! What I really like about this place is their red latte, which is not a super common drink. It's a rooibos tea latte, so it's actually caffeine free. They make good use of the space they have, but it's still not enough seating at peak times. read more

This is one of my faaaavorite cafes to work in. Some days, I have to work remotely but I know I'm not going to be productive in my apartment. Enter: Origins Coffee Lab. Work - they have lots of tables indoors and outdoors where you can set up a laptop and work for hours. There are two outdoor outlets as well which is a rare and wonderful coffee shop find!!! There's also plenty of shade so it doesn't get too hot. If I want a break, I'll venture outside the enclosed area and lounge on one of the chairs across the lawn to take in the sun and people watch for a bit. If I stay for a while, I'll order another drink or some food, but they've never made me feel uncomfortable about staying too long. Coffee - I've been obsessed with iced matcha lattes and theirs are great. One time, they put it in a tall glass (like those fancy tiktok videos) and I was over the moon happy with that simple aesthetic pleasure. Since then, it's been plastic cups only, which is fine because the matcha is still delicious - green, smooth, refreshing. Food/service - the food is nothing special but the service is great! One time, I had a LOT of work to do so I got here at 7 am. When I ordered pancakes, they said the kitchen doesn't open until 8 am. I said it was fine, paid in advance, and sat down, but they delivered it by 7:30! I was so touched and thankful, and I've had a soft spot for this place ever since. read more

I came across this place through Google Maps recommendations for vegetarian breakfast. It's located in the mini Square of Pentagon Row. The interior has a cute relaxed vibe, I wish I brought my laptop. I got this olive dish which I'd never had before it came with a biscuit. I liked the dish 7/10 was so hot coming out. The biscuit wasn't hard and fluffy batter. My only complaint was there were a lot of olives in the dish. So it was a little overwhelming. I originally ordered a match oat milk iced latte but it was a little too sweet for me. They let me get an oat milk ice latte instead and it was pretty good. Went today and bought 2 coffees and 3 desserts for $30. While the coffees and 2 of the 3 desserts were excellent, why were we asked to tip (suggested tip of 20% to 30%!!!) if we did all of the work ourselves? We input the order ourselves at their point of sales machine and paid for the order without any interaction with the staff. We then collected the food from the counter and brought it to our outdoor table ourselves. So why are we being asked to tip? Why is this even a question on their register? I was looking for a good breakfast place that was walkable and made my way to Origin Coffee! I had come here many times prior for a coffee but didn't realize how good their breakfast menu was! The dishes were so tasty and light. Both dishes were 10/10. The blueberry pancake had a light and fluffy texture with a sweet filling on the side. Very trendy, think hipster vibes with a sprinkle of techy panacheness, aesthically pleasing to the eye, and the service is always top tier. Love there are options to sit indoors or outdoors. Good coffee and pastries! We also tried their breakfast options and did enjoy their crab benedict. We opted to try a non traditional option and get it with croissants and scrambled eggs instead. It is yummy this way, but there isn't a lot of crab; definitely more egg heavy. We also ordered a side of bacon. It was good, but you'll only be getting two strips. Although the vanilla pancakes looked appealing, it was just meh. The pancakes were dense and dry. We enjoyed the ice cream with blueberries and strawberries more. There are a good number of seats, benches, couches and high top tables to sip & chat. As a science lover I thought the neon sign of a molecule was a perfect touch and for the bill of the business. The Bad: The line forms perpendicular to the door. New patrons must circle around tables to stand in line next to patrons faces while they are eating and talking. Highly uncomfortable. The self-service ordering takes FOREVER. Hence the long line. There also seems to be a window that serves as a portal to the outside. Patrons can also stand in the freezing cold and receive their order at that window. I didn't order food, but I did get a glimpse of a plate and it looked and smelled like heaven. I came with my Friend from Maine. He was catching a flight that morning. The Origin is close to the Airport. I had a Chai Latte - YUUMMM. Then I ordered the Classic Benedict. The eggs are 'cage free', on top of bacon (no nitrates) and a buttermilk biscuit (made from scratch). It was delightful. The coffee bar brought our drinks the the table. Then we had a sign on our table and they called the number of our sign, and delivered the food. The prices were reasonable for the quality you recieve. I got off the subway and walked here because I saw they had good reviews for their breakfast! When I got here, the espresso machine was being worked on and there was a big line. Apparently, they used to have two order stations, but now only have one. So it was SUPER slow ordering. It was super hot and muggy while waiting in line because the order station is right next to the door. But once seated, the ac cooled me down quite nicely. Unfortunately, my one other complaint comes in the food temperature- I oraffagadodered the pancake with bacon and eggs. When the wait staff brought it out (which didn't seem too long), it was like warm at best. There was also just one tiny piece of bacon. However, I ordered an extra egg, and was rewarded two extra eggs! It was also very tasty! I asked for ketchup because my family has a long and unbroken history of eating ketchup on eggs. They don't have ketchup but the kitchen staff was courteous enough to ask if I'd like bbq sauce instead. Not quite the same, but the breakfast was still good. I also had the coffee milk cake which was delicious. I was going to have an Affogado, but no hot coffee means no Affogado. And the coffee milk cake was a nice substitute. read more

This review is solely based on a cup of coffee and a conversation. My wife and I entered to just check the place out. However, we left with a lot more. Upon entering, we automatically noticed the clean, pristine modernity of the place. With a few individuals using the area for study, one could see that this was a place to relax and be alone with one's thoughts. However, if one wanted to enjoy the beautiful weather on a sunny day, they also offer shaded outdoor seating. As we ordered our Spanish coffee (a hot latte with sweetened condescend milk), an older gentleman, Dick, walked in with a huge smile on his face and joy in his step. I made a small passing joke to him concerning my wife, he laughed and we began to talk. He told us how much he enjoys life and that he and his friend meet all the time here to converse and bask in the sunlight of life together by sharing their experiences over a cup of coffee. Just as he was speaking, the young man behind the counter set a beautifully crafted latte in front of us, signaling to Dick that his coffee was ready. Dick, appearing joyfully bewildered, remarked that he hadn't ordered yet. The young man simply said that he knew but that he also knew what his usual was. Dick was brilliant at discovering that this young man took notice of him so much that he not only noticed him but remembered him. As Dick thanked him, the young man gently smiled and a beam of gratefulness twinkled in his eye that displayed a connection that transcended culture and age. Dick eventually said goodbye to us and joined his friend outside. In this day and age, it is refreshing to witness such a natural joy and organic care that produces such a sweet atmosphere. I consider myself blessed to have been a part of such a miraculous seven minutes. Dick and the young man will neither fully know how much they influenced each other nor have an understanding of how they affected me. Enjoy! read more

I was looking forward to try this new coffee shop on my recent visit to Pentagon City to pick up some items at Costco. The Spanish Latte is made with a little condensed milk and I opted for oat milk. The staff was extremely patient with all my questions and changing my mind while ordering. I wanted something savory to-go and they whipped up a refreshing and filling smoked salmon croissant with spicy cream cheese and avocado. While I was waiting the five minutes for my sandwich I sipped my latte. The added condensed milk adds a little more depth and sweetness to the latte than normal syrups do. This is really unique and the closest thing I can compare it to is if Vietnamese coffee were mixed with a normal latte (best of both worlds!) read more

Where to start...let's see if I can organize my thoughts today... Coffee quality: Wow! I've been addicted to oat milk lattes for over a year now. I love trying small coffee shops, but the ones in this area can be disappointing at times. Sometimes other shops don't have barista-blend oat milk so it tastes thin like an americano with 2% milk or the espresso is just terrible and it tastes like water. Needless to say, NONE of that is true here. They roast the beans in-house and the Spanish latte with oat milk is creamy and has a very rich full flavor. It's hard to describe how happy and warm I feel on the inside when drinking these Spanish lattes (ask for oat milk) so you just have to come and order it! You can seriously tell the owner knows what he's doing. Also, you can buy the coffee beans they roast in the store!! Very excited to try those. I will update this review when I do. Food: They added food recently and it is AMAZING and worth every penny. Oh. My. Gosh. I just bit into the crab benedict and it has so much flavor. The biscuit is moist and savory. (SN: I can survive entirely on biscuits. It's my favorite food.) The crab cake was really well seasoned. I expected the food to be 7/10 since it seemed to be primarily a coffee shop, but it's definitely a 10/10 brunch-worthy meal. You won't be disappointed. Honestly the best breakfast we've had on our 5 day DC trip + it's easily accessible from our hotel Ritz Carlton. We ordered two caramel lattes (one hot + one iced), blueberry pancakes + the bacon poached egg sandwich on bagel. It was all so delicious + flavorful. I really enjoyed their ordering process: they have a couple of iPads where you get to order yourself to ensure you get exactly what you want with no miscommunication. The most important part is the coffee; it was fabulous. The barista definitely knows her stuff. I had the option of two different types of beans for my cortado. She explained the beans to me and explained which one would be best for a cortado. Then she made a superb cortado. I highly recommend this shop to anyone who enjoys well made espresso drinks. read more

Pros: +1 for fair pricing on some drinks - cold brew is usually over $4 (sometimes even $5) but this place sells it for $3.80, affogato was also under $4! + 1 for a variety of different drinks - they offer V60 pour overs, chemex, french press, and more! +1 for great interior design and aesthetic - very Instagram-able, lots of places to sit. Here is what we thought for each drink: - Cold brew: Strong fruity kick but lasting nutty and chocolate after taste that's quite pleasant. I wasn't a huge fan of the acidity (more sour than fruity, imo) but it's a unique blend for cold brew that I would buy again just for the delicious after taste - Cortado: Got it with oat milk and thought it was average. There's too much milk flavor; I can taste the fruitiness of the espresso but it's overpowered by milk. The first thing I taste is the oat milk, then a bit of the espresso, then the flavor of milk again. I think a strong espresso could make this a very delightful cortado. Definitely enjoyed the fruitiness of the espresso, though! - Hot chocolate: Apparently it was $5 but it tastes like watered down Swiss Miss. My friend who got this was pretty disappointed since it didn't have either strong milk or chocolate flavor - Matcha latte: Very milky - my friend thought that it lacked matcha taste and she couldn't really taste the matcha the more she drank it. Overall, the coffee here isn't bad, but it's definitely not great. Again, I came here with coffee snobs so if you are not a snob, please don't take our review too strongly. A lovely new coffee shop in Pentagon City, in Pentagon Row right behind Pentagon City Mall. It's right by the ice skating rink so would be perfect for grabbing a hot drink! The barista who helped me was super kind and sweet. I was disappointed to learn that they don't have decaf espresso or coffee, but she explained to me why and it made sense. I can only drink decaf but I did pick up a drink for my mom, a Spanish latte, which is made with condensed milk. My mom said it was sweet, decadent, and delicious. She really enjoyed it! The prices here are very reasonable and you can get a handcrafted drink for under $5. There is only one size. The pastries and dessert look delicious! I noticed in a previous review that someone was uncomfortable that the croissants were out in the open, and saw today that they were covered and under glass. It was nice to see that they really take customers comfort and covid safety seriously! The seating here looks comfortable and is well spaced out for a socially distanced drink. Looks like it would be a great place for a coffee date or studying. The Cafe is large and bright and had a great ambiance. Overall, I would definitely suggest you give this place a try. Popped in for pancakes on National Pancake Day. Shared the Blueberry pancakes and they were absolutely delicious. The cream cheese topping and blueberry compote were very nice. Also got the avocado toast on sourdough. The toast was quite crispy, just the way I like it and was topped with a very generous portion of avocado. We topped it off with the Coffee Milk Cake.
