Good, solid breakfast with large portions in typical diner style. The coffee was SO good! I'd come back just for that! It was strong but not bitter, and it had a good flavor. I usually only have one cup of coffee but this time I had 2 and part of a third! For breakfast, I had the Portuguese French toast which I requested macadamia nuts to be added to (they have several toppings you can add for a cost). It was really good! Perfectly cooked and with lots of macadamia nuts. Next time I would try their coconut syrup but their "maple blend" was also good. I'm not sure what the "blend" is but it was sweet without totally overpowering the French toast. My husband had the country breakfast (eggs, sausage, hash browns, etc.) He said it was good. Standard but good. I wouldn't consider this a "must-try" but it's worth a visit and was the best of the three breakfasts we had during our stay. read more

Came in for breakfast. It was wholly average. I got the breakfast burrito. Was hesitant, due to multiple reviews that stated it was a bit flavorless. Surprise surprise, it was a bit flavorless...but fine. My wife had pancakes and eggs. Also stated that it lacked flavor. It was very ok. Oh, I have to comment on the music playing in the restaurant. Red River Valley, I Dreamed a Dream(from Les Mis), Garden Party, Danny Boy, Swanee River... Quite a mix. And it played at an alarmingly loud volume. Well let's say I felt like we were being rushed for some reason. Came inside sat down and I kid you not our server came to the table at least 7 times asking if we were ready to order when we just had sat down. Its was super weird because each time we told him we were not ready than 2 minutes later he was back asking the same question. Overall the food was hmmm not that great. I got the wagyu lunch special which was a decent burger with fries with pie on the side. But for my husband who order the 16oz new york steak it looked terrible. First off we thought it would be thicker and he asked for medium not well done. First time on the island and came here for breakfast. It's a nice retro looking restaurant inside. There was a lot of variety on the menu. Personally I wanted everything and I'm a skinny guy. My girlfriend had the Island French toast. Trying to remember the name. But the French toast and Portuguese sausage was super bomb! I had the 1/4 pound burger breakfast with eggs. Everything was fresh. I will try the eggs Benedict next time. The waitress was nice, she was busy serving a lot of people. It's more of a eat and go place. All I can see was so many customers requesting for so many ridiculous requests and a few normal ones. My experience was great and will come back again. :) read more

Let me start by saying service isn't great. Waiter forgot about our drinks and was not attentive at all. The food was nothing special and I don't think I would ever return. Came here for breakfast after it was recommended to us by our driver. I got something off the house special - chilequilles. Not what I expected. Very lackluster nothing special. There is little to no seasoning. No sauce eggs were bland. I would suggest adding more flavor to the plate some seasoning in the eggs some sort of homemade sauce to add to the meal. The mimosas were good. The Nutella crepe was a good addition. The brown sugar paired with the Nutella made for a great combo. I loved all the decorations throughout the restaurant are appealing to the eye and something to look and enjoy while you eat. Ooof This is one of the places we were really looking forward to having breakfast, based on the atmosphere and menu variety. I'm sorry to report, we were not that pleased with our meals. I need to start this off by saying the staff here is one of the friendliest welcoming of any restaurant on the island. There is always someone making sure your coffee mug is topped off, and seems like they're really intent on making people happy with their visit. That being said... my girlfriend ordered the crab cake Benedict, and I *had* to order the Portuguese sausage and eggs breakfast. First, the Benedict... I saw her picking through the layers under the thick cream sauce, and asked if it was too rich (because it looked as thick as the best hot fudge around). She said it was more like mayo than hollandaise, and she just couldn't. The next thing I noted were her hash browns. Later, outside, she would tell me that it seemed like they used "yesterday's leftover" and added some fresher stuff to the other side... and I'll have to agree, as my hash browns were translucent around the edges and had a more sticky crispiness than fresh-off-the-grill crunch. Balancing the Benedict, I'll have to say the Portuguese sausage was pretty good for it being Catalina and not South Bay LA, or Oahu. If I were to offer a suggestion to anyone with an inkling to try this restaurant, it would be to wait til later in the morning when a bit of a crowd forms, not so much when they first open as we did. In the end, it was definitely a bummer that our expectations were so let-down, but we are going to give their burgers a try one of our next trips out, so hopefully that will be more of a redemption! BOMB, BOMB, BOMB!! The morning I swam in the ocean for 40 minutes, I knew I needed a hefty lunch! Original Jack's Country Kitchen was the ideal place to load up on hella carbs. Walked over around noon on a Saturday. The place was packed. We were greeted by a few friendly female servers. Good vibes all around. We got lucky and scored a booth right away. The menu was huge and it took us a while to figure out what we wanted. Our server was super nice and patient. He wasn't rude when we asked for a few extra minutes. Hubby ordered the breakfast burrito and I got the COMBO! Dude, I just treaded water for a consecutive 40 minutes in the ocean in the middle of February in 50 degree weather. I neeeeeeded me some COMBO! Combo included a cheeseburger with fries and pie a la mode. Heaven. I added bacon to the burger. Double heaven. The burger tasted like clean In & Out if that makes sense. It was a thin, good tasting patty with yummy melted cheddar cheese, and well cooked fatty bacon. Crisp lettuce, fresh tomato and a spread of thousand island. Delicious!! The fries were plentiful and came out pipping hot. My fav! It was everything you could want in a burger and fries. Oh man I wish I could have eaten that again! Hubby loved his breakfast burrito. It was big and chocked full of bacon, sausage, ham, eggs, cheese, and veggies all in a huge flour tortilla. Came with a side of authentic looking refried beans. Huge portion that filled his tummy and put a genuine smile on his face. Washed it all down with delightful Kona coffee with unlimited refills. Our super nice server asked me a few times when I wanted my pie a la mode. He wasn't up in my face at all to get us out the door like most restaurants. He was like a father figure making sure I didn't miss out on my pie. He just kept telling me "let me know when you want that pie and I'll bring it". He sure did! They had four pie flavors. I went with the blackberry. The blackberry pie was plentiful in real fruit and went down easy with the vanilla ice cream. It was a lovely experience for me. The combo. Tremendous stuff. Made me feel like I was in the 1950s. When does any meal come with pie in 2019? This meal! :) I love it when diners execute to their highest abilities. That's what I found here. Went this morning at 9:30am for breakfast. They say it's a local place. It was busy. They had a great selection of eggs Benedict. My husbands favs. Neimans meats and bacon a plus throughout the intense menu. My husband ordered the applewood Neiman ham with the eggs Benedict. He was unfortunately disappointed. The ham was good but it wasn't hollandaise sauce. It was butter. He didn't complain. It freaked him out and I tasted it... I think someone pored butter instead of holandaise. He ate my pancakes and was bummed out. I had the Neiman 1/4 beef patty with one egg and fruit it was great. Came with pancakes I gave my babe. My Bloody Mary was ok. Awesome experience. The staff here is excellent, especially Alfredo who was a delight and personable and prompt with our order. By the time we were ready to go, we felt like we had known him for a long time and gained a new friend. Thank you Alfredo for making our experience at this restaurant outstanding. On our next visit to this restaurant, we met Octavio who was intricately cleaning the tables and left them spotless. He didn't just give them a lick and a promise with a damp rag, he took the condiment trays and everything fully apart and cleaned them. It's nice to know that this restaurant and these people take, such pride in their place of employment and their jobs. Octavio spoke with us in great length about so many things we didn't know, and it was a pleasure to have gotten to meet and speak with him. He was so polite and courteous, he deserves recognition.I hope Jack's Country Kitchen keeps these two men on forever as we will be back to Catalina soon. The food there was good however I am vegan and although I found something there, I could eat, I wish this establishment would have more vegan options on their menu. read more

Had a day retreat at Catalina Island and saw a lot of people in front, so we decided to check it out. The vibe inside was really similar to a diner with a few neon signs and a nostalgic feeling. I ordered a Crab Cake Eggs Benedict (poached eggs served over crab cakes and sautéed spinach on an English muffin) served with hash browns. It was drenched in the sauce for a while before being served so the English muffin was somewhat soggy, but the overall taste was still great! A few friends ordered the burger special which came with a choice of pie a la mode and the pie's filling was the perfect sweetness with a buttery, flaky crust. Good breakfast place to come to when visiting Catalina Island. Be prepared to wait at least half an hour to be seated during the weekend. The food was delicious. I really enjoyed the hash brown because it was so toasty. I did think it was a bit overpriced, however, it is expected as they have to have their supplies shipped. I wasn't a huge fan of this diner and normally I have a soft spot for diner type of restaurants. The wait was extremely long and I swear there were plenty of empty seats before they called our name. Perhaps I ordered the wrong food, but the fish tacos were on the list amongst the other "chef's specials." The fish tacos I received were overcooked, completely bland, and did not fill me up. The portion was tiny and the outside of the fish was not crispy at all. My friend ordered the Dungeness crab eggs Benedict dish and that dish tasted a lot better than what I had ordered. Cool all American breakfast and lunch diner in Avalon. Busy every time we walked by. Standard breakfast menu for the time we arrive. So many options of all possible breakfast item combinations. Cook to order. I got eggs over hard, turkey sausage patties, has browns, and two pancakes. My order came with sausage links, not patties. My wife got the French Toast. Lunch menu available at 11AM. Cool old time memorabilia on the walls. Picture of "homes of the stars" from the 40s or 50s. Also old magazine frames covers and advertisements. Old liquor decanters. Decent service even though they were very busy. We were catching the ferry off Catalina that day, so we had our luggage with us. The host was happy to stow our bags for us while we ate.
