Grilled Halibut and Veal Scallopini Sec with Mushrooms with sides of Cheese Ravioli.
    Vicki C.

It has been a minute since we enjoyed a meal at OJ's and it brought back memories of wonderful meals and special occasions there. Our waiter was professional and efficient. Our meals were as delicious as we remembered. My husband won't order Veal Sec anywhere else! My halibut and side of ravioli were delicious. Bread is now at an extra cost--$5-but an important part of what makes Original Joe's a legacy in dining. I wish it was open for lunch on weekends, at least--seating now begins at 4pm daily. Reminiscent of Rat Pack dining, the atmosphere is warm and welcoming. It's truly a special dining experience in Downtown San Jose!

Came here on a Friday night and called ahead to put my name down. They told me the wait would be 30-45 minutes, so I arrived about 30 minutes later, but my name still hadn't been called. I ended up waiting about 50 minutes after arriving before being seated. Once we ordered, it took another 45 minutes for the food to come out. I got the chicken parmigiana with spaghetti, and my friend ordered the veal parmigiana with spaghetti on the side. It tasted like your typical parmigiana which was decent, but nothing particularly memorable. Also got the chocolate eruption cake. It was around $14-$15 which tasted okay. Overall, I'm not sure it lived up to the hype, at least in my opinion, and I probably wouldn't come back.

Loved the look of this place from the outside,& just had to try it. It looks like it has hardly changed in decades, and I love that. It has real character. When we went in, the host told us there would be a 20-minute wait for a table, or we were welcome to sit up at the counter. So glad we did, it was a real old-school experience, and we saw up close just how hard and non-stop the Joe's staff work! We had the delicious bread& butter while we waited on our entrees... chicken piccata for him, and a spring salad with broiled chicken for me. Both were delicious, as were the sides. I'd definitely go back if I was in San Jose again

    Baked Lasagna

This was my first time at Original Joe's in San Jose, and it turned into one of the worst dining experiences I've had. I made a reservation for 7:00 PM, but we weren't seated until 7:50 PM. We were told it was because a table had been sitting there since 5:00 PM and the server hadn't cleared it out. At some point, restaurants need to normalize asking guests to leave when they've clearly finished and are just loitering--especially when there are reservations waiting. I had a comedy show to get to at 9:15 PM, so I specifically made a 7:00 PM reservation expecting we'd have plenty of time to eat. Instead, it was already 8:30 PM and we still hadn't received our food. For a place that requires reservations, the timing and coordination were extremely disappointing. I ordered the baked lasagna. It was alright, but nothing memorable, and I couldn't even finish it because we were so pressed for time. To make things worse, it was also my friend's birthday, and I felt bad that he had to spend it sitting around waiting so long just to eat. Overall, the long wait, poor table management, and rushed meal completely overshadowed the experience. Not a great first impression, and unfortunately not a place I'd rush back to. I prefer the Daly City location much more.

Cool, old, historic vibe. Big open dining room. Place was packed on a weekday night. Waiter was awesome. Kept a funny, light attitude on a busy night. Service didn't suffer because of it either. Had to try the chicken parm. Portion was large with two chicken breast. Good flavor and cheesy sauce. Comes with a choice of side and I selected the ravioli. I'd eat the chicken parm again but would choose a different side. Ravioli wasn't anything special. Would repeat.

I went on a Saturday evening around 6 and ommg was it crowded! I didn't have a reservation, but thankfully there was seating at the bar! Which I think is so much fun since you get to watch all the cooks! This was my first time going and overall had a great experience. I got Joes chicken soup which was flavorful and loaded w chicken and veggies. The Cobb salad was huge and delish, I had to take it home. My friend got the chicken parm w the baked potato and loved it. Also got a Christmas cookie martini. Wait staff were so friendly and for it being so busy, we didn't have to wait too long for anything. Travis was our waiter and so great. Overall, I would definitely be back!

I loved the food, old time vibe & service. This place has been here since the mid 50's and has remained a solid dining spot though all the ups and downs of San Jose. Added our name to the wait-list as we started our hour drive from home. Busy for a Sunday night at 5pm. Calimari Steak for me (2) lightly battered, pounded cakes with a coleslaw like tartar sauce, delicious. Garlic bread with soo much garlic, I'm glad all four of us shared it. Mixed vegetables, cauliflower, beans, zucchini, steamed, light butter sauce a good match to entries. Chicken Piccata, generous amount of chicken breast (can be ordered bone in) tender, light sauce, plenty to share. Rock Salad, subbed crab for the shrimp, avocado,1000 island, soo good. Prime Rib. Flintstones size serving, cooked perfectly, leftovers for sure. Reminded me of my parents bringing us out to Bay Area classic restaurant's,now gone like Spengers in Berkeley. Service was quick and attentive but let us enjoy the meal unrushed. Seating at the counter allows you to watch the chef's at work. Big menu worth returning numerous times.

This restaurant is really good! The only thing holding me back from giving 5 stars is the fact that it's extremely overpriced. The taste of the food was great! We got the Veal Scallopini with fresh mushrooms. We wanted it over pasta and ravioli which I was told they normally do, however, they charged me for an extra side and there wasn't much spaghetti. The service was exceptional Randy Z took great care of my table and made it a great time! I would highly AVOID the garlic bread it was $16 +tax for the most mediocre garlic bread I've ever had. We asked to get it with cheese and the cheese was awful. It tasted like Singles white American cheese which wasn't even fully melted. The ambiance inside is very pleasing!

The place was packed, but the wait wasn't too bad--about 20 minutes. We did have to wait a while for our host, followed by another long wait for the food. I ordered the linguini with clams in white sauce; the portion was generous, but the flavor was just okay and a bit too creamy for my taste. I'm glad to see the place doing well, though I don't think I'll be going back anytime soon.

My favorite cheeseburger of all time ... so good custom blend of meat taste ridiculously great.

Having grown up in San Jose, original joes has been an institution of the city. Classic Italian food. With the renaissance of Original Joe's in the foodie blogger space, I decided it was time to try it myself. I was underwhelmed. The menu for this location is not the same as the Original Joe's in sf, our server clarified. No zucchini fries, no espresso martinis, no spicy rigatoni with vodka sauce , but traditional Italian food. Ambiance was chill; I felt like this could've been the Sunday dinner spot for families. Seeing the photos of how the store and its team evolved over time was nice to see. I asked if they had their sourdough burger, the waiter clarified this menu is not the same menu as the stores in sf. I had the Joe's special burger with garlic fries and my bf had the spicy rigatoni with a meatball on the side. While waiting for my food, we deduced that the sourdough burger is actually called the Original Joe's burger. On the menu, there was no distinction of what type of bread it was served with! Ugh, anyway my burger was cooked well done which is fine, but the garlic fries were good! My burger came with a fried egg, bacon, and spinach, but it looked like the spinach was chopped really fine and mixed into the patty.. my bf was also surprised with how his spicy rigatoni appeared. From the pictures online, he expected a bright orange vodka sauce but he received something else. The pasta was fine, but not what he was expecting. We didn't receive any complimentary bread either, unlike what past reviews mentioned; maybe that's no longer a thing at this location? In the menu, there was a blurb of the history of how this location came to be in San Jose, and I get the feeling the owners want to preserve the restaurant a certain way based on their menu. Large pasta portions, classic drinks, lots of wine options.

Solid 3 Stars. First time at Original Joe's and I have mixed feelings. The food was tasty but lacked creativity. My Steak Sandwich was too rare and served on a toasted bread roll. That's it, just meat and bread. Flavorful but just dull. Accompanied by steak fries. I actually used ketchup as a condiment for my sandwich. I know a lot of people would probably kill me if they saw this but I had to work with what they gave me. We started with Fried Calamari, no complaints. The other entrées were Chicken Parm and Pasta Marinara with a giant Meatball. Simple and tasty but lacking presentation. Our server was David and he did a great job. His knowledge of the menu was substandard and he showed genuine concern and professionalism. We appreciate David and that's why we tip our waiters 25%. We arrived around 7pm on a Saturday evening. Plenty of parking options in the area. No wait to be seated even though it was very busy in the restaurant . Original Joe's has an attached bar called The Hideout. Full bar with flat screens to enjoy the game. We may return to try it someday. So to reiterate, our first visit at Joe's was good. Food lacked pizzazz, but is decent. My dull Steak Sandwich and fries set me back $35. Maybe some veggies and condiments to accompany it would be a good idea? The Pasta Marinara was flavorful not too salty and great portion size. Chicken Parm was simple yet tasty. Our Tiramisu was unfortunately inedible. Something was bitter and off putting in it so we sent it back. Oh well, no biggie. I look forward to returning someday.

I made a reservation for a Thursday evening, and even though it's right in the heart of downtown, we were lucky and managed to find street parking in front of the restaurant with free EV charging! Right when we stepped in, the interior is decked out in a modern art deco style. Vibrant & fun colors while still maintained a sosphiscated touch. After a few recommendations from our server, we decided to try: Mushroom Arancini (10/10): These are amazing, as soon as they brought it out, we can both instantly smelled the truffle oil. The exterior were crispy & pipping hot, the inside has creamy mushroom. It was certain my favorite of the night! Rigatoni alla Vodka (8/10): A solid pasta! The sauce was great and balanced. There was a good amount of sauce that coated in the pasta. The pasta itself was perfectly al dente! This is a staple dish but I felt like it might lack an interesting flair. Stuffed Branzino (8/10): Another solid dish! The whole were already debone which made it so much easier and fussed free. The skin on top was insanely crispy, the meat were juicy and overall tasted very healthy and fresh! It was a nice paired to the heavy pasta dish! They also gave us 2 cute canolis as a free birthday dessert which were super good! Overall, this is a beautiful spot for a date night and I'm glad I took my partner here! We started with the garlic bread for appetizers. It was well presented but I think it would've been well paired with some sort of dipping sauce because it was a little dry. My boyfriend ordered the thousand layer lasagna and really enjoyed it. I ordered the rigatoni and thought it was just okay. I didn't realize the dish didn't come with protein so it felt like the dish was missing something. The sauce itself was nice but for some reason, some of the pasta was undercooked and some of it was al dente. For dessert, we ordered the chocolate pudding and tiramisu. The presentation was so beautiful. Both my boyfriend and I loved the pudding most -- I would definitely order this again. The tiramisu wasn't bad but it would've been better if it had a stronger coffee taste and if it was a little more moist. The wait staff was incredibly attentive and definitely made our visit feel special. She paid attention to the small details like helping us label our boxes, which I've never had anyone do before. On a completely unrelated note, I was surprised to find the bathrooms are shared between both genders. While there are separate stalls, the sink area is shared, which I wasn't expecting for a nicer restaurant like this. But I would say overall the food was hit or miss but the service and experience overall was amazing:)

But hey, for a higher price, they better deliver on the food quality! It most certainly disappoint. The food was amazing. Got the Linguini Fruti Di Mare, the seafood was good quality, the cioppino sauce was intense. It truly is the boss of the sauce. Also ordered the Chicken Marsala, I'm always cautious before ordering because the marsala wine can easily become overwhelming, or the sauce is too sour, or the chicken is tough and dry. I did not hit any of those, but rather, what I got was a few silky smooth and tender pieces of flattened chicken breasts, that is moist and flavorful. The sauce is great too, not to mention the mushroom, that is so fresh and flavorful on its own. Last but not least, their attention to detail went all the way to mashed potato and steamed vegetables. It was truly one of the best. Did I mention the free, fresh baked foccacia? It's among the top 3 I've had in any restaurants, ever. At the end, even it pinches my wallet a bit, it was well worth it. The bread had herbs on top and the dipping sauce is olive oil with fried and then mashed soft garlic. The bread looked nothing special, but once I touched it, I was delighted to find out that they were warm and crusty on the outside but soft on the inside. It took a bit of wait for our food to came, I think it meant they were freshly cooked. The portions were big. Once laying down our food, the lady came with a big bowl of cheese and helped us sprinkle on top. It looks amazing with the cheese on top, like snow flakes melting on. I am so impressed with my short rib bolognese. The piece of short rib was sumptuous, a whole piece, resting on top of the pasta that is covered in meat sauce. The meat itself was so soft that it was super easy to tear off and just melts in my mouth. Flavorful and soft and juicy, super yummy! The pasta is cooked el dente, and each bite there's a bit of ground meat coated on the ziti pasta from the bolognese sauce. Very satisfying! I had a bite of the ravioli and these huge dumplings are covered in fresh pesto sauce and very cheesy inside. Although I was a bit confused on the difference between a pesto sauce and a pesto cream. I felt like the sauce was more pesto but we ordered pesto cream. Anyhow, it tasted good but I prefer my short rib bolognese more. Bus boy service is fast and responsive. We had a very enjoyable meal.

Small parking lot but there is plenty street parking in the vicinity. There is seating right outside the place so if you want to sit and eat you can. You walk in and it feels and smells like you've stepped into someone's home. Even if this is your first time here the aroma is nostalgic for some reason. I think it's muscle memory. When you've had delicious comfort food your soul senses it regardless of whether or not you've been there. I ordered Doordash pick up because I was ordered on a Thursday for lunch and didn't know what the line would look like. So I walked right in and gave my name and was handed my bag-o-goodies. They have shelves of dry goods to purchase. Refrigerated items to purchase. Their deli counter is towards the back and wraps around the front. I ordered: 1. 2 meatballs: hearty and delicious. 2. Beef raviolis: small but packed with meat and in their meat sauce. Flavorfull! 3. Arancini: I've never tried one. It's a rice ball filled with veggies, cheese and ground meat. Then rolled in breadcrumbs and deep fried. Then served with their sauce. Holy Moly!!! Why have I never had this heavenly piece of Italy?!?!?! Seasoned well and fried well. It's a meal in it of itself! 4. Garlic bread: hot, buttery, garlicky toasted goodness! The only thing I finished was the arancini. I took a bite of each of the rest just so I could write this review and will save for my sons for when I get home because it's all too good not to be shared. Will be back!

There were maybe three customers ahead of me, when I heard someone screaming "number 34!" I realized, hey, maybe I need a number before being served! I found the "Take-A-Number" ticket dispenser on the red pole in the front of the store! I enjoyed looking around the establishment checking out all the yummy food choices while I waited. Next visit, I'll try a dessert! When it was my turn, I asked what the most popular sandwich was. "The Chris Combo". So, I ordered the Chris Combo on Dutch Crunch bread. I think it cost me $15.26. My hubby and I shared the sandwich at home. It looked good. It tasted good. However, the meat to bread ratio was off. We each felt that we had an inch of bread left from our halves with no meat filling. Perhaps we should've opened our halves and spread the meat around to cover all corners of the bread. Regardless, the sandwich was tasty. Will I return? You bet!

The carbonara was amazing--served super hot with great flavor and a solid amount of meat. Easily a 10/10. One tip though: eat it while it's hot, because once it cools down, it's not quite the same. The seafood pasta was also a standout. Everything tasted fresh, the flavors were on point, and it felt surprisingly light for a pasta dish. You know how pasta can sometimes feel heavy? This didn't have that at all. Another 10/10. The pesto pasta (a special that day) was just okay for me. It leaned a bit too oily, and the pesto flavor didn't really come through. They added ricotta, which kind of overpowered everything else. I did like the portion and the amount of meat, but overall I'd give it a 7/10. The ambiance was decent--nothing too special, but clean and comfortable. Service was excellent. It felt like a family-run place--three brothers along with their wives and kids--and everyone was super friendly and welcoming. They gave great recommendations and even helped accommodate my mom by seating us closer to the bathroom, which I really appreciated. Just a heads up: it's in downtown Los Gatos, so parking can be a bit tricky since there's no private lot. Overall, I'd definitely recommend this place. The portions and quality justify the price, and it stands out as one of the better Italian spots in the Bay Area.

My friend and I walked in on a Wednesday night and there were only a few seats filled / no wait time. You get your pick between a few tables indoors/outdoors, the bar, and a couch area which I felt really completed the community-forward space. We ordered at the bar and got a number to take to the table. You're able to sample a few things before deciding on which glass to commit to, which is always nice to have. All of the wines (tried whites, rosé and oranges) and food were amazing and really added to the overall experience! Still thinking about the tuna tostada and tom yum bucatini -- excited to pay them another visit to try more of their food menu. The service was consistent and was another huge plus on our experience. The workers kept up casual conversation and were extremely personable with us all night, especially since we were one of the last few visitors and the last table to leave. Definitely excited to bring more friends here in the future!

We also expanded our selections and tried the squid ink pasta with frutte di mare and the risotto with the same seafood accompaniment. I subbed out the risotto for linguine and both were filled with plenty of seafood varieties and a generous portion. Highly recommend the two.
