The Original Pancake House was pretty good, but it wasn't amazing. I got the chocolate-chip pancakes, which were fine, but nothing better than anything I could've gotten at Waffle House. My friends had a similar impression of their meals, stating that they were "fine", but didn't really "hit the spot" per se. I also got a plain bagel and a side of bacon, which I can definitively say were below average, and simply not very good. As for the ambiance, it was pretty basic, but enjoyable nonetheless. I liked the thematic artwork on the walls, which displayed pancakes and other breakfast items without coming across as goofy or silly. In addition, I loved how the menu had a section titled "What are Pancakes?", which detailed the history of pancakes and the restaurant as a whole, which I thought was a nice little touch. I also loved their old-fashioned coffee mugs, which are difficult to find these days, despite their higher level of quality and effectiveness. Finally, our server was sweet and did a pretty good job of checking up on us. Overall, I'd say that the Original Pancake House was pretty average and wasn't really anything better than I could've gotten at a chain restaurant like Waffle House or Denny's. It does seem that they've made some updates, as we were actually able to join the waitlist before leaving home, significantly cutting down that notorious wait time once we arrived. They were busy as always, but delivered quick and friendly service. If you are not okay with being in a noisy area, definitely ask to be seated in a booth. Great spot for breakfast, especially if you have a large group! They were able to accommodate our group of 20 without a reservation right at opening on a Thursday. Our waitress handled the table smoothly and our food came out decently fast. I'll have to go back because I missed the pumpkin pancakes on the menu, but I did really like my Belgian waffle topped with fresh strawberries, whipped cream and made in house strawberry syrup. Portion sizes were a little all over the place - some people got 2-3 pancakes while others got a stack of 6, so not sure what delineates on the menu the size of the meal. We chose to try out the original pancake house to start out our anniversary. Customer service was absolutely exceptional and the restaurant was hustling and bustling. The ambience gives family style breakfast restaurant. The menu is pretty extensive in my opinion so it took me a while to find what I really want it, we both went with corn beef hash Items because we absolutely love corn, beef, hash, the corn, beef, and the potatoes. The eggs get a negative one for me. I asked them to be scrambled soft and I'm not sure if they just sat in their juices, but it wasn't appetizing . Though the Customer service was good. It doesn't seem like our server had really explored the menu so some of my inquiries were answered incorrectly however, all in all we are definitely looking forward to going back to try the Dutch baby. read more

My parents were in town, so we decided to check out the Original Pancake House and it was an amazing experience for all of us. First off, shout out to our waitress Gabbi for doing an outstanding job and her professionalism was one of the best I've seen in the food industry. The menu was diverse for all palate choices and certainly had the taste and quality to go with it. We ordered the Dutch baby to share and my parents who never tried it, gave it such high remarks. It was soft, not too sweet, and came with fresh strawberries in the middle. Their blueberry pancakes were amazing, portion size was perfect too. It's 6 pieces but they aren't that big so any adult who eats a generous amount can certainly finish it. It also comes lightly powdered with sugar. We also got a side of their waffle, but the pancakes seemed better; same batter? Not sure, but it just had a better, softer taste. Their home fries are not oily or too crispy, the soft cooked texture with a little seasoning I found very tasteful. Their meats like bacon and turkey sausages were good, no specific comments about it. We went early because this place gets packed. Not even 30 minutes into seating, the place went from half empty to full; pretty quiet to a chatterbox with everyone talking. Overall, great ambiance for casual dining if you enjoy breakfast foods like me. Certainly will be back again! They also give $2 off for military discount for service members. read more

This is my review from almost a decade ago. The fresh juice is GONE, but worse are the chocolate chip pancakes They are horrible compared to what they once were. Original Pancake House is one of my favorite breakfast spots in Columbia. They have literally everything you can think of us on the menu and the service is very fast. The portions are massive, so I always get the junior size pancakes which is more than enough for me. However, if you are going on the weekend especially you will probably have to wait around an hour. My tip is that I would join the waitlist here on the yelp app before you arrive at the restaurant. That way, you don't have to wait until you arrive to add your name to the list! It also gives you an estimate of when your table will be ready. The restaurant itself is pretty large and the parking is plentiful since it's in a shopping center.
