In reviewing, I tend to simply stick to the mundane facts. However, this is not a normal review. This is a review of Tommy's Original World Famous Hamburgers. This is a review of a legend. My love affair with Tommy's finds its roots in the 80's. This was fueled by late night stop-offs after evenings of dancing away at "The Palace" "The Paladium", "Florentine Gardens", etc... These Hollywood nights were always topped off with chili, grease, fries, shakes, and the craziness known as Tommy's Van Nuys. There were loud arguments. "You shut up. No, you shut up" filled the air. There were fights. There were gun shots. There was even a 3 am 10 car pileup. But mostly, there were amazing chili burgers and chili dogs. While my late night Tommy's drunken gong shows are long a thing of the past, my love for the chili remains bolted to my culinary soul. This brings us to present day. Well, not all the way to today. But, at least to just a few days over a year ago. My lil bro (I will call him Rich. After all, his name is Rich) and I share our passion for Tommy's. In recent years, we have started a tradition of going on the day after Christmas (or thereabouts) to conquer our longing for all things Tommy's. Just a tad over a year ago, on December 26th, 2011, we made our way to the Tommy's in Simi Valley. While it may be cleaner and a whole lot calmer than the older and rowdier Tommys' locations, the chili and all the goodness it comes on is just as delicious. However, our Christmas joy was soon smashed. Upon arrival, we noticed the power was out. It wasn't just out at Tommy's. It was out for a wide stretch. Even though it was day time, a grim darkness stretched for what seemed to be miles. A great sadness swept over us. The five stages of grief and loss stared us down. 1. Denial - Maybe it is just a short blip. Maybe the power will come back on soon. Five minutes, cigarette, ten minutes, cigarette, fifteen minutes, cigarette, the clock ticked on but the power didn't. 2. Anger - WTF - The world is against us. This can not be. We will storm Tommy's and make our own d*mn chili dogs. 3. Bargaining - Maybe they have some leftovers. Maybe the grill is still hot enough to cook a burger. Maybe there are some chili-dogs in the trash. Alas, there was no Tommy's burgers, dogs, or fries available. 4. Depression - Sad unfed stomachs hanging in the balance, a great sadness filled the parking lot as we (along with others) came to the realization our Tommy's obsession would not be sated on this fine morning. 5. Acceptance - Well, there is always next year. Let's go a find a McDonald's. Off we went! Now, this brings us truly to present day. Well, it brings us to December 23rd, 2012. We decide to take a break from our holiday cooking chores. With our fingers crossed, off we go towards Tommy's . If you don't like Chili, DON'T go here! I've passed by this restaurant numerous times and I wanted to give it a try for a first time. So I went to the drive thru and saw there was Chili everywhere! I just wanted a regular burger. I told them NO Onions and no chili. I pick up my food and there's a crap ton of sliced onions (picture taken after I threw them away). The bread was dry as hell and the meat...oh gosh... The meat was so damn dry and TINY. Like are we rationing here? Is this World War 3 or what's going on? I stopped at Tommy's ordered to Chili cheese dogs, chili cheese fries with onion and a beverage, however my Chili Cheese Fries was missing the cheese. That was the only downside to my visit. The food was of the quality you expect fresh m Tommy's, the store was exceptionally clean, and the staff provided friendly service. I went here about 2 weeks ago around 10pm and was the only car in the drive through and they took over 15 minutes to complete my order. OK, maybe a bad night. I'll give them another chance. I came tonight around 9:30 and the drive thru is closed off. I park my car and go to order inside and the doors are locked. Looks like they closed earlier than the stated hours. This Tommy's has the same quality as every other Tommy's however it is absolutely the slowest fucking Tommy's I've ever been to. I hate to damage the brand for the lack of urgency this particular Tommy's has. It's slow enough to be a deterrent for me. read more

I don't have really any complaints about the food, the food is what I expect for the most part. Although, a bit pricey for what it is. But the service here is SOOOOO SLOOOOOOOW. You could literally pass away in the drive thru and no one would notice. It is ALWAYS slow. I have lived within 4 miles of this place for over 20 years and it has been this way as far back as I can remember. You will wait at least 10-15 minutes PER CAR. This is not "fast" food. If you don't have more than 30-45 minutes to wait, don't bother getting in line. Pretty ridiculous for not an extensive menu...probably would come here more if I didn't have to wait an eternity to get my order to be honest. read more

Me and my family love Tommy's we used to to the one in north hills. We moved to simi last year and wanted to try The Tommy's here on madera. I'm sorry but since when is the chili to dang on spicy. I thought they put some of the yellow peppers juice in the chili. My chili was kind of sour. I Asked for extra pickles but only got 3 instead of 2. Amazing food, asked for EXTRA EXTRA chili and the boy at the drive thru made sure that i got that. Didn't catch his name but he had glasses and a little afro under his hat, He was such a joy to talk too. I hope to see him again soon!! This location is very disappointing, I am quite surprised it is still open. Specially because every restaurant that comes to Simi does not last very long. Any how I stopped by Tommy's today and was let down by their portion size. Aside from the elevated prices in comparison to other franchise location throughout the San Fernando valley and Los Angeles they really skimp you. Maybe I have just been hella spoiled by the Hollywood location with their fries overflowing from the paper boats. But at the Simi location you can almost get a visual count of how many fries you get. I grew up going to the original location in la.... so I'm not sure if that's why I have such strong standards for them... I asked for a cheeseburger w no onions. What did I get a burger that had chili all stuck on the top and bottom of bun, they wiped it off but it's bread!!!!!!!! N they also stuffed it with onions. I'm not against you, I'm just being honest. I love Tommy's and I usually choose to go here, instead of the one on topanga that's closer to me, but the past 2 times I've been here they have gotten my order wrong. The first time I drove back from the opposite side of Simi and got it fixed. The more recent time I didn't even bother going back. On top of not getting the right order, the burgers had like a quarter of the chili the burger is supposed to be made. Since then I've been going to the one on topanga and they've never given me the wrong thing and aren't low on chili. I want to go to the Simi location but idk if I can trust it anymore. read more

Life long Tommy's fan going back to the original Beverly and Rampart burger runs during my college days. Was super excited when I moved just down the street from this Tommy's. But every time I have ordered from the drive thru here my order has been wrong. The last time I said something and the girl just shrugged. I didn't push it because I was in a hurry and had already waited too long. Today I am sad to say I officially give up. I did not get the order that I extra paid for. The fries were old and chewy. Ahhh, Tommy's... a staple of SoCal heartburn and stomach aches. Soooo good going down. Then the food hangover. When I first started visiting SoCal years back, I absolutely loved this place. Chili burgers, dogs and fries?! Count me in! Fresh, crisp pickles and I'm in love. However, as I've grown older I find that I still like the taste but wow do I feel like junk afterwards. I guess my body just doesn't handle the stuff like in days gone by. This location has a nice facility which is pretty clean with decent service. Plenty of parking because it shares a huge lot with Albertsons. The one thing I'd warn you about (which is no fault of the actual business) is the type of clientele this location attracts. Apologies if it sounds shallow but quite frankly this restaurant is like the ghetto of the area. I had lunch there yesterday and felt like they should have had a security guard. Nobody was unruly but I just didn't feel that comfortable. To top it off, when we left someone had smashed into the back of my friend's car and just taken off. No note, nothing. Last night at 9:15pm I went to Tommy's, the family wanted to get some chili burgers. The store was all locked up and the drive-thru was coned off. I knocked on the door as the employees were still working inside. They motioned me to go away. This is the seventh time that this Simi Valley location has closed early. The store hours are marked on the window (open til 10pm) but they close early all the time. I have called Corporate and sent emails several times with no reply. This company has no regard for customer service or loyalty. I've been to other Tommy's locations with no problems. This Simi Valley location is a nightmare along with Corporate inability to respond or correct the problems. read more

Not sure about what the other reviewers were expecting, Why all the low reviews? This is one of Tommy's better fast food locations, with plenty of parking, and large dining area. My only complaint is that the place closes. Other locations are open 24 hours and available for a late, late, late, early snack. The staff here is very friendly, and volunteer suggestions when I can't decide between a single, double, triple, tamale, or just a bowl of chili. The burgers are made on demand, and the chili is always hot, and you can tell its Tommy's, as it has that unique essence to it. Some say there is no taste, but to each their own. There is no specific way to make chili, and Tommy's has done it their own way for decades. read more

I'm sorry but I'm one of those weirdos who loves Tommy's. We have a couple back in LA so I grew eating it which I'm sure is why I still have a love for it. Staff here is always friendly & I appreciate that they also have a drive thru (even though it's impossible to eat Tommy's while driving). The chili is just so good. I know many will find that disturbing but get over it :). I've yet to find something here i didn't like. My two favs are always going to be the chili cheese breakfast sausage sandwich & their chili cheese fries, eating these items alone will decrease your life expectancy, you have been warned. read more

Running around on Wednesday, for a late lunch I saw Tommy's. The last time I ate at this chain was during jury duty in San Fernando. It was good there. Simi Valley. Working long hours at work stop to get just a simple order of Hot dogs plain chili on the side so when I get home it has everything plus chili . On my hot dog. Oh yeah, because I drive by and think, "I gotta get something to eat, Tommy's was once pretty good".... 9:00PM... they close at 10:00... " hey can I get a chili cheeseburger, some chili fries, and a strawberry shake"..... " what, no shakes?... Oh you shut your shake machine off at 8 o'clock... So nobody buys any shakes after 8 o'clock?"... I guess so... you'd think they'd post a sign or something???.. i've been here dozens of times at 8:00 or 9 o'clock in the evening thinking I can get something to eat at Tommy's, and I can, but their shake machine is always closed down.... They seem to get some kind of perverse joy in telling people the shake machine is down - this is a very rude crew. Love the atmosphere. The cashier was polite and witty at the same time. I felt very comfortable to order my food. It's rare no-a-days to go to a food joint and feel welcomed to have dropped bye. I definitely will recommend anyone to eat here. Great food and awesome service! read more
