I really like this market. I think their quality of seafood is fresh and they have a great selection . My only feedback is I wish the staff would change their gloves. I see them grabbing the fish and then taking money and then using the same gloves. Sometimes they will service you with no gloves on which isn't great either. Please change out your gloves after handing money or the register. read more

We were visiting the shore and had the inclination to make our first seafood boil. Thankfully we found Ortley Seafood Market. The fish was incredibly fresh and the pricing was very reasonable. We tried to ask some qs, but didn't get a lot of help. That being said, it was a Saturday morning and very busy so we won't fault them for that. I'm sure that's not the case on a normal day. We learned why this has been a local favorite for so long: the seafood here is super fresh & amazing! Our order was ready in a flash: 1lb clam strips - fresh & hot, with cocktail & tartar sauces 1/2lb shrimp salad - plump shrimp in a simple mayo, celery, who knows what else dressing Jumbo shrimp cocktail - these huge shrimp were 3 bites each, & needed nothing else but lemon & cocktail sauce I had never seen crab sauce before - it's apparently one whole crab per container of red sauce! There was an empty shelf in the fridge & we learned that it was clam sauce that was so popular it was sold out (made in the morning). Both the New England & the Manhattan chowders sounded tempting, as was the jambalaya & lobster rolls. So tempting, that we came back the very next morning to have the same lunch & also pre-order 4 paellas to go. A couple hours later, the hot paella was packed securely for us. It was heavy, and looked & smelled amazing. It fed a lot of impressed people! Warm service, seats to eat in, lots of people coming to take out or get seafood to cook at home. We had a hankering for some seafood so we stopped here for the first time after a nice day on Ortley Beach. Glad we did ! This is a great little seafood market, so clean inside and with a great selection of fish. We ordered ahead for takeout and everything was ready for us when we arrived. We tried 3 different platters, Fried Soft Shell Crabs, Fried Flounder and Fried Clam Strips. All were great, nice light batter and served with French fries and coleslaw. Everything was also very reasonably priced. We will definitely be making this a regular stop whenever we're in the mood for some great seafood. read more

On July 4th 2022 I ordered takeout and while waiting in for my order noticed some very unsanitary behavior with a couple workers. One worker appeared to be under the weather and rotating between using his thumb and fore finger to clear his nasal discharge and also used his shirt. The guy whose job it appeared to only be shucking clams and oysters coughed numerous times right on top of the clams. It was quite nauseating to witness. My order was paid for so I waited for it and promptly threw it in the garbage because my appetite was lost. Pretty gross read more

Excellent! We stopped by to pick up some shrimp for shrimp cocktail and had to spend some time choosing between 6 or 7 great looking options. The staff behind the counter was super friendly and ready to answer any seafood questions. On the way out with our shrimp, I noticed a cooler filled with house made red and white clam sauces. Will have to return for that! 4 instead of 5 stars because they are CASH ONLY. I happened to have cash on me that day but often don't, and hate using those small atm machines (they do have one of those, and i'm sure it's fine, but I have had issues with other similar machines in the city). read more

Ugh. Food poisoning from bad oysters scallops. Ordered a dozen oysters and the boiled scallops $40 later... tasteless meal. Now I'm sick. Overpriced for "fresh" seafood. Had to ask for horseradish... who doesn't offer condiments for oysters? Check your freshness guys... Update: 24hrs later had to be picked up by the EMT and taken to emergency. Passed out three times (cracked my nose on the first one) after severe dehydration from shellfish poisoning and losing all bodily fluids. Spent 6 hours in the ER getting rehydrated and monitoring pain. Oysters cost = $3000. read more

Not sure how I missed this gem! Living on the other side of the bridge, we always had Pisces...until we didn't. Ordered through Uber Eats tonight and it was EXCELLENT! The food was great! Got the Paella. It was decent. Not sure how it's normally served because I don't typically order that anywhere (not recently anyway) but it was in a butter sauce. Excellent fried food, good flavor and good portion for price. Forgot to take photo of our food. My husband had fried shrimp platter and I had Ortley Special. I am always worried about fish fillet, cause most places do not put seasoning on fish. It was perfect and nice thick piece. It's more of a fresh seafood market than a sit down place. It was packed with people buying their fresh, raw seafood. I'm sure it's great! However the prepared, cooked food was a bit below decent. The seafood fried platter especially was not good. It just seemed like they didn't care about how the restaurant /cooked food was made. Especially the clams! They were fishy and gooey. Lastly, all of our condiments were packets of Kraft brand: tartar, cocktail. Meanwhile they sold their own cocktail and tarter homemade condiments in fridge! Why? How is that a good advertisement on your restaurant/ business food if you can't even serve your own, homemade condiments? It's like ordering nachos from a Mexican restaurant and being served with cheese whiz on side. Laziness or being really cheap? read more

It had been a weird week. I was looking for an amazing meal somewhere low key to aid my recovery. It was dead quiet when I dropped in at Ortley Fish Market for lunch in early August. It was exactly what I needed. Since it's not a giant family-friendly theme restaurant and tourists generally don't cook for themselves when on vacation, this fish market doesn't appear to draw the tourist traffic. First and foremost, tourists in this part of the world patronize places with the corny names where Mom can get hammered, Dad can buy an adorably vulgar novelty t-shirt, and the kids can get grilled cheese. The 7 Yelp reviews since 2010 sort of support me on this not-for-tourists theory, I think. And it's that kind of thing that intrigues me - a scant few reviews and a decent rating usually hint at something decent. See, I like to sort Yelp reviews by most rated for an area, then scroll all the way to the last entries on the last pages before all the zero-reviews places. That's how you find the best local and slept-on spots, where you generally get the better dining experiences. You have to read those few reviews thoroughly though, because a lot of times they're written by family friends or employees just trying to get the business out there. But when they're honest and random, it's a good indicator that something unique can be found. Like this place. Ortley Fish Market is evidently a seafood market before it's a restaurant, but they do really well at the latter. So much so that, after trying out a grand total of four other restaurants in the three days I was in the area, I can proclaim The Ortley Special the best deal for miles. This entire review is based on one experience with one plate, but I think it's justified. I liked the concept of The Ortely Special because it included all the menu items I'd normally want to try at a fish shop, and because the fishmongering teenager who served me said it was his favorite thing on the menu. "It's what I usually get," he said. He seemed too earnest to lead me astray, so I went with it. The Special is piled with, I think, basically a small portion of most everything in the ocean, breaded and fried, on top of a heap of really respectable french fries. Lobster tail, a fish filet, scallops, a crab cake, and some other stuff went on the plate. All the items were fresh, snatched from stock in the case and nicely, modestly prepared. The plate is overloaded to the point it could feed two people and leave them with leftovers and everything on it is delicious. It was $14.95, which isn't exactly cheap, but it's a crazy value for what's included and how good it is. Had I not been hours from home, I would have bought fresh fish to take with me based on the quality of what I was served. I did however buy some soup to go, and was glad about that the next day at lunch. read more

Good chance they were the freshest and best tasting Scallops of 2016. Seared in oil, butter, garlic, S&P. Came back later in the week for the Lobster Bake!! Two 1.5lb lobsters, Lb of clams, Lb of mussels, Lb of shrimp, sausage for flavor...Prepared fresh and put into a large tin for easy stove top steaming. Added Water, S&P, Garlic, Paprika, old bay, onions, basil and oregano... Next time we'll do it in white wine! Needless to say it was fantastic and will now be ordered time and time again... I have been living my summers at the jersey shore my whole life. I have very high expectations when it comes to seafood, especially at the Jersey shore. Ordered dinner tonight and was far from impressed. I appreciate local businesses and give them a lot of credit during this unprecedented time. Food was average at best. Four dinners and two soups and I was didn't feel the value nor what I would expect from fresh seafood. The fresh seafood in the case looked good, but serving it cooked for dinner might not be in the cards. Sorry, I really wanted to like this place. read more

I spend most of my summers on Cape Cod. Growing up with an uncle who was a fisherman I learned to appreciate good seafood. If you like crab cakes as much as me then you've found your fish market of choice in ortley. Not to mention the fresh fish, clams, oysters, and shrimp. They have a take-out menu of prepared food. I go for the regular crab cakes if i'm gonna fry or bake them. They are lightly breaded. just how i like them, and are really well seasoned. They go perfect with some spicy grey poupon, hot sauce, and a shot of lemon. If your grilling and don't wanna buy them fried already then I'd go for the crab shell stuffed with crab meat. Perfect to wrap in foil and cook on low heat on the grill. Again they are perfectly seasoned and a shot a lemon is the only thing you need for the perfect bite. Nice local family run business. A quick chat will get you the freshest fish and an easy recipe. Recommend this place if your in the area. read more

For what this place offers... Which is fresh seafood and nothing fancy or in-between... It's worth every penny. The place is a typical ordinary seafood market, small and clean. It hosts 2 small booths in the back of the market and a table top at the front window for 'in-room' dining. You have the option to BYOB, which is always very convenient. The fish is fresh (some still alive) and cleaned and cooked on premises. There's no thrills or frills at this place - just some fresh delicious seafood and you can't beat the price! Scumbags. Holiday weekend they tell you as you are checking out that their credit card machine doesn't work and ask you to use the ATM in their store. No sign posted letting you know that. The ATM charges $2 and they don't even attempt to reimburse you. Besides the fact one of the items I was charged for wasn't in my bag. If you are gonna pull a scam at least make sure I'm getting all the items I paid for. read more
