This hidden, very popular, authentic joint is very familiar to eating in your Nona's kitchen. We were greeted immediately and thankfully made reservations! This place gets full fast! We ordered the appetizer of the day which was a zucchini fritto. It was so delicious and fresh. Cooked perfectly and the dip (aioli mayo) enhanced the dish but did not over power it. I ordered the Ricotta Gnocchi (28 Ratatouille, Provencale sauce, toasted sunflower seeds). This dish was missing a component. Salt or any real flavor. It was packed with veg which is nice but the gnocchi was not that flavourful. It was a miss for me. The lasagna of the day was a butternut squash. The salad was perfectly dressed and packed full of veg. The butternut was slices so thick so it was uneven with lasagna to squash ratio. The Luiguini (lemon, artichoke, spinach, pine nuts) was my most favourited dish. The combination of flavors and fresh pasta was a huge hit! All in all, the meal was ok. Orto is our beloved 'local.' This bistro has always been great for fresh hand-made pasta and the restaurant's full menu offers great food selection. Over many years, it has been one of a very few restaurants where we have never had a disappointing meal. It has a cozy interior, a covered deck and a spectacular outdoor vegetable garden setting in summer! The full team - from Brigitte Raye the experienced Owner, to the talented and efficient Open Kitchen Chefs, to the friendly, knowledgeable Servers - is a true tour de force. The place just hums with people who love what they do. Orto now offer very special La Regalade French Dinners monthly and they are SO popular that they've moved from a one night service to two nights. These special 3 course table d'hote dinners are featured monthly online and reservation requests must be phoned in for these, rather than made online. We have enjoyed all of these evenings; each dinner delicious- made with fresh produce, perfectly prepared, artfully served and of Otto's usual generous quantity. Some samples below. One of the Boeuf Bourgignon evenings included a rich French Onion Soup, tender Boeuf Bourgignon and a superb Lemon Cream Tarte. The Le Gigot a Sept Heures (Seven Hour Braised Leg of Lamb) included a plentiful seafood vol au vent with a light puff pastry as the first course, with chocolate mousse for dessert. Tonight's dinner (9th of April) was yet another French Spectacular! The evening started as they all do, with warm Bad Dog bread and butter, then a Seafood Gratin full of prawns and scallops in a smooth, luscious white wine sauce. The main course was a superb coq au vin of red wine, bacon and pearl onions, 'fall off the bone' braised chicken thigh and leg, and creamy mashed potatoes. Dessert was two perfect Crepes Suzette with vanilla ice cream and flaming liqueur poured on each plate at every table. The creativity and care that go into these dinners, not to mention the value at $68.00 per person for 3 courses, is notable and we highly recommend that you reserve for the 13th of May dinner! What we love about Orto is that it's more than a restaurant; it's a Neighbourhood Good Food Hub. Soon now, on summer weekends, Brigitte will again run a mini Farmers Market, where clients can pre-order online for weekend pickup each week, fresh fruit, vegetables, eggs, jams and pickles from the BC Interior. A large truck drives up to Orto's front door and off-loads bins with the personal orders for each client to take home. The food was really good, the owner provided an extra server for the appetizer since we had 6 and it provided 5. Just a bit pricy. Service is good. The place looks great, they have a big fancy seating area that gives relaxing vibes. I enjoyed my food a lot. Some of my other friends food were okay, and the appetizer salad was great. read more

This is a bit of a hidden gem, really good Italian food on a nondescript side street in North Van. Great casual decor, great service as well. All the dishes were great. It's not cheap and it's great quality, I would say the prices are fair. I'll start with the ragu with wild boar. I love the composition of this dish, the sauce is lovely, not too thick but just right. I love the pearl onions and the meat is good. The brussel sprouts are great. Crunchy and tasty and the dipping sauce - some kind of garlic aioli. The mushroom tart I didn't have I tried a tiny slice of it and it was, crunchy yet delicate. Well done. Would definitely come back to try different things, can't do it that often though. :) read more

We arrived at 5:00pm and they said they had no space for a party of 4 and there was not a single customer in the restaurant. Then, one woman said they were booked until 8:00pm. I went online and they had availability for 7:00pm and I called which they recognized my voice and said they were fully booked. We really felt very unwelcome!!!! They didn't want to serve us. I was with two men with turbans and we all felt unwelcome! We drove distance to this place so their website should say reservations only. Every restaurant I know can take walk ins unless they have advertised reservations only. read more

Really really quaint place just across the street from me tucked in behind the barbeque restaurant. I suspect the owners are French as a lot of the clientele seems to be speaking French. Really adds to the ambiance of the place. During the warm weather, the patio is really very nice. The food was delicious and the service was fantastic. If you enjoy tasty food, Orto is the place. My friend introduce me to this place. For lunch, we had the tasty trio (cup of carrot soup, greens and 1/2 sandwich) and smoke salmon and chive omelet with salad and Bad dog bread. Everything was fresh, flavourful and tasty including the homemade bread. We splurged and shared the tiramisu for dessert. Just right & not too sweet. They have breads and soups along with appetizers, pasta, & omelets for lunch. They even offered a 3 course lunch special. Service was prompt and friendly. Nice ambiance. Parking can be a challenge but it's worth it. Definitely a hidden gem in North Vancouver. They're near where Indigo books was. Can't wait to dine at their outdoor patio when the weather warms up. We had heard good things about this restaurant and were excited to try it out. The outdoor dinning atmosphere is unique as you sit amongst the veggie garden and have privacy at almost every table. We order the bread with onion butter and tapenade which was excellent followed by the sharable ceasar salad which was unusual but very good. The entrees is where the meal went sideways. I ordered the chicken and chorizo fusilli which had a sauce that way over reduced and way to much of it. It tasted like heated up tomato paste. In addition I couldnt find any chorizo in the dish at all. My wife had the spaghetti Natalina with capers, raisins, olives and anchovies. The anchovies were over bearing and made the dish fishy and salty. we ended up only eating half the entrees. read more

Tiny little restaurant in North van. Was recommended to me from a friend. When I got in we were quickly greeted by the super friendly lady and got seated quickly on the covered and heated outdoor patio. I ordered the three course menu with the Brussels sprouts for the appetizer, spaghetti bolognese for entree and pear crumble for dessert. My girlfriend ordered the lamb ragu. They used fresh pasta for the dishes and gave big portions. We shared everything and still packed a bit to go. Near the end it took a while to get the bill and dessert. I am only going to review the food. First of all, I do not know what the rave is all about this French owned pasta joint. Other than the unique set-up, nothing! I mean there is really no substance. I can easily make a better sauce than that bolognese they served. It just wasn't bursting with flavor. It came with a minuscule amount of Parmesan on top. I had to request for mire cheese. Number two, when I order spaghetti Vongole I don't need all those other fillers like sea asparagus or capers. It's too overpowering. I don't like sea asparagus at any given time. I don't like the taste and I don't like the texture. Their only saving grace is the pasta is homemade. A little too al dente but I rather that than over done. This is the most anti-climatic food experience we've experienced in a long time base on so many recommendations and positive reviews. Two stars is actually quite generous. I am not a great cook but a pretty good one to say the least. If a restaurant cannot do better than me which the "bar" is not very high that that says a lot. I wouldn't waste my time on this one. You want good pasta? Go to ilGiardino. It's the best. read more

Came here during covid and was sat in their balcony. The food is good but the pasta is a bit too chewy to my liking. Lots of efforts to bring fresh ingredients to to the table. Although everyone sat in their garden outdoor, I don't think the tables are separated with 6 feet apart, took a star off that! Also, they ask if you would like bread but they don't tell you they it actually costs $9 for the tray of bread. The bread was good and it came with the olives and butter. I don't mind the bread if it is $3/4 but I think it would be a good gesture to let customer know if it is $9, not until when the bill comes. it was an early bday celebration for bestie s as she was going to be away for her actual bday. the bfs of the besties also tagged along and ofc bestie p was there! bestie s and her bf was alr there when we got to the restaurant, it was pouring outside also, so we were rly wet. the restaurant is a lot smaller than i envisioned it to be - beware of that and the tightness? it got quite loud as it was a busy night so you do need to shout a bit if you want to have a conversation with frds. s was alr having a pate with her bf as he was hungry - it seemed decent and she didn't rly voice any complaints. p, s and i shared the house red that she ordered then we ordered our mains. s' bf and i both ordered the squid spaghetti with crab and prawns - the portion size is def decent. you do have to ask for pepper as that wasn't offered. the dish can get a bit heavy as the crab was mixed with a cream-based sauce. the prawns were yummy and i love the spaghetti - it was perfectly al dente. s ordered the casarecce, which came with chicken. s wasn't able to finish her dish as she stole bites of her bf's. i snuck a bite of hers and the chicken was delish as was the pasta. i found the chicken pieces to be a bit large tho. p's fiance ordered the parpadelle bolognese. a little mishap here as there was alr grated cheese on top. d doesn't rly like cheese or rather he tolerates it on certain dishes. he found the dish to be tasty. p had the pasta of the day, which was tortellini with procini. there was no protein in this dish and p found that, while the dish was good, it wasn't rly worth the $28 that it was listed. i had a tortellini - the pasta was cooked well and it was filled with cheese. then came dessert time - s ordered tiramisu and i requested a candle for bday purposes ofc! i had the chocolate hazelnut tarte. s makes her own tiramisu so there was comparison there! each were good on their own tbh. omg the tarte - I LOVED THE TARTE. the tarte was nicely sized slice with this crunchy bottom part. it was basically a ferrero rocher for me, which is one of my fav chocolates. this place is super close to my office and i want to come back for lunch! we didn't get to try the bread this time - that's def an excuse now! read more

Orto Artisan Pasta is a cute little Italian restaurant in North Vancouver offering pasta made from scratch. The restaurant is on the smaller side and reservations are only accepted for parties greater than six. However the parking lot is transformed into a patio for outdoor seating and you can sit in the garden. The garden where vegetables are grown for their kitchen! ROSE, PROSECCO, MINT ($9.00?) Starting off the evening well, this was a great drink. Highly recommended. And I don't recommend alcoholic beverages often. WAGYU BEEF CARPACCIO ($14.00). When all the appetizers arrived, we started with the carpaccio. The slices of wagyu were very lean, chewy and the worst cut I have ever had. BAD DOG BREAD WITH CARAMELIZED ONION BUTTER, BLACK BEAN TAPENADE, EVOO ($7.00). Next up is the Bad Dog Bread from a local bakery in North Vancouver, which we didn't intend on ordering because at $7.00 I would've honestly preferred in-house bread. Although when our server asked if we wanted bread after placing our order... why not? This may not be a true representation of the bread because we didn't purchase it directly from the bakery, but it wasn't the best. The crumb was dry and the crust was tough. As for the accompaniments, the tapenade was well salted and the fluffy along with buttery onion butter tasted great. The evoo was very flat and could've used some salt imo. ZUCCHINI FRITTERS ($6.00). The following appetizer is not the type of Italian zucchini fritters I had hoped for and resembled zucchini tempura more. The zucchini was a touch overcooked, almost mushy and the batter wasn't crispy. CAULIFLOWER FRITELLA ($6.00). The last of the appetizers is the cauliflower, which tasted great. I loved the pesto that exhibited a good balance of acidity and it wasn't too salty. I hate to sound like a broken record, but again a touch too soft (although not as mushy as the zucchini). SQUID INK TAGLIONI, CRAB, SCALLOP AND PRAWN ($25.00). Moving to the pastas, the taglioni lacked a squid ink flavour and the pasta was clumpy along with mushy. For the best squid ink pasta itself, I have to recommend La Terraza for such great flavours. In general I can understand why restaurants may be hesitant on using more squid ink in case it's off putting for some palettes, but unfortunately this was just bland. As for the seafood, there were mild hints of flavours but the proteins were overcooked. Stiff prawns (but buttery, yum) and scallop, and literally not much crab meat throughout the pasta. PAPPARDELLE BOLOGNESE ($19.00). Continuing along is the bolognese without much meat sauce. Since pappardelle is a lot thicker than taglioni, it wasn't as clumpy or mushy. The pasta was a touch cooked past al dente as well, but still better than the former. Moreover, for the little amount of meat we had, there was a hint of spices and a nice meaty flavour, but we would've liked more sauce. RICOTTA RAVIOLI WITH PEA SHOOTS, LOVAGE BUTTER AND IKURA ($20.00). The last and best dish from the evening goes to the ravioli! The well executed ravioli was bang on. Al dente ravioli with a burst of creaminess and a perfect level of saltiness from the ikura. I mean, even without the ikura it would've tasted great. Great flavours on the lovage butter too. In the end, I had really high expectations for Orto whether it was myself that hyped the restaurant or the Yelp reviews I read. Okay, well honestly it was a photo I saw online featuring their pasta with black shaved truffle. After seeing that photo, I KNEW I had to come here. Unfortunately it was only a feature and there were no features on the evening we went. In regards to the service, I can't believe there was no service. All the appetizers arrived at once (I would've liked the bread first considering it took a long time for the appies to arrive), no finished plates were cleared so no table space was available when the pastas came out, and no one asked how the food was. Not one single person asked how our meal was. I love the concept of Orto's outdoor garden and housemade pasta, but neither the food overall nor experience was positive enough for me to revisit. read more

My girlfriend and I met an old friend of mine here for dinner. It was a beautiful August evening so we sat outside. Our table was amidst lush planters full of vegetables and a trestle of grape vines. My grandparents live in Italy, and the rustic ambience reminded me of dinners that we would have in small rural Italian villages, even though we were in the greater Vancouver metropolis. Our appetizer of bread, herbs, and cheese set the tone nicely. The dill and lemon gave a fresh taste to the flavorful whole wheat bread. My pappardelle and bolognese was a perfect serving size, and the house-made noodles added to the dish rather than merely being a conduit for sauce like many bland pastas. It was a little heavy on the parsley for me, but that's just personal preference. Her tomato and basil spaghetti was particularly tasty. The portion sizes were perfect for dinner. My raspberry kombucha was less sweet than what I was accustomed to, but my gf loved her lavender coconut juice lemonade. Dessert of tiramisu and lemon cream finished the meal admirably. Prices were very reasonable, especially with the favorable exchange rate. They still have some early kinks that you would expect from a new restaurant, but all in all one of the more enjoyable Italian meals that I've had in North America. read more

Having eaten at some superlative Italian restaurants in Italy, San Francisco, New York and Dubai - I was expecting good food, but it turned out FANTASTIC! The Gnocchi (like little pieces of clouds - so, so good) and fresh handmade pasta surpassed all of my expectations, sure - but it was the vegetables and herbs that blew me away. This concept restaurant grows their own herbs and whatever seasonal vegetables they can and this shows in the food made with it. Flavorful, fresh and succulent. I've been here before when it was a bakery and Soba place and as happy I was then I'm just as happy to know that this is now Italian food. Who doesn't love pasta? Cmon! Noodles are probably the most favourite food to eat in all kinds of cultures. Paperdelle is one of my favourite pastas and with a basic bolognese sauce? I could eat this every day. EDIT - As of 09/01/17 THEY ARE FULLY LICENSED! I think they are starting slow with a selection of wine and beer, but they will build their boozy repertoire as needed. Also, I've been back several times since and the changeable menu - it seems impossible, but it's true - tastes better every time. Holy moley! ------ The newest pasta joint on the north shore is doing something right! They've only been open a few weeks, I guess, but this crew is no slouch. Brigitte, who formerly owned La Cigale on 4th and the famous La Regalade in West Van, started this restaurant with her son, Chef Steeve Raye (we lingered here so long I feel like I got everyone's life story!!). The whole family is helping launch this venture, which included a total renovation of the space and a brand new, luscious garden. Okay, so now... the FOOD. APPIES - We invaded Orto with 10 people - on their first night of dinner service! The first thing we noticed was the abundance of small/share plates. We got a bunch! The "Steeve's Appetizer Platter" was phenomenal. It had smoked olives (house made. fresh. juicy. THEY ARE CRACK), polenta cube things, bread and three tapenades, a zucchini tempura... it was incredible. We had two and almost ordered a third. We also had the burrata. It's so tender, and served with big leaves and sprigs of basil and juicy chunks of heirloom tomato. On top of that, we ordered more bread (seriously. this bread is not just bread. It's bread of the Gods. You get several different kinds with nuts and fruit or "country bread" that is plain but crusty and delicious). MAINS - I was surprised at all the pasta variations, and the vegetarian options! I had the bucatini (long, thing noodle straw thingies) with prawns and nettle sauce, which was like eating a finely textured (perfectly al dente) and saucy garden. Even with all the food we'd eaten, I didn't feel overly stuffed because the sauce was so light and fresh. My husband got the carbonara - it was so good, I kept trying to steal it from him! Just when I thought things couldn't get better, I tried the gnocchi my friend ordered. It melted in my mouth! DESSERTS - The Tiramisu was fluffy and delicious. It was a healthy slice! The "lemon crema" was a stand-out. It was light, not too sweet, full of flavor and little pieces of fruit. It does melt after a while, so make sure to eat it up! We scarfed all this down with delicious cups of espresso. After all of this, our bill was $40 per person. With an 18% tip included. We definitely tipped even more because the meal was so affordable, the service was excellent, and the atmosphere was unforgettable. We left before being able to eat here so this review is about the service not the food. It was busy when we came. We stood in the room for five minutes and no one came to greet us at all. Servers passed by without a word and staff looked at us and turned away when we tried to get their attention. It was also clear looking around that people were annoyed with the long wait times getting their meals. This place clearly cant handle busy times. Also good luck with parking and finding the restaraunt. Parking is mostly small and reserved for the other stores around the area with 15 mins max street parking. read more

My husband and I had dinner here for the first time a few days ago and thought the food was excellent. We ordered the burrata salad and the deep fried zucchini and both were really good. The salad was outstanding and tasted so fresh, likely because they are using so many of the ingredients from their garden. I had the pasta carbonara which I really liked and my husband had the gnocchi. As others have said the gnocchi melts in your mouth. Yum. Definitely recommend this place and will be returning soon. Having heard numerous praises about the place, I decided to pay a visit. It was a weekday lunch and the place isn't busy. I was seated in the outdoor area right next to a big spider. So I moved myself to the empty table right next. The carbonara pasta I ordered was very over-seasoned. The pasta was indeed fresh-made but the taste and texture aren't worth mentioning. I tried very hard to finish the dish but it's just way too salty, even after drinking a big tall glass of water. Then, I noticed the staff about this. The female staff was very dismissive and uttered the words "we won't charge you" at the same time while she was walking about. This was humiliating because I didn't complain just so I can get free food. The food was literary inedible. After placing a $20 bill on the table to pay for my food, I left the place. On my way out, the male staff asked "what's wrong?", while I answered "The dish is way too salty to be finished." Then, he said nothing and I walked out the door. read more

Orto is a five star wonder tucked away in the most unassuming corner off marine drive in North Vancouver. My parents frequent this pasta house so it was about time I got in there. This building also houses Bad Dog Bread bakery which is insanely amazing if you've never tried it. Their bread is to die! Their brioche is exquisite. Alright back to Orto, my mom and I ordered quite possibly the most refreshing Aperol Spritz I've ever had in my life made with local distilled gin and vodka from the Woods distillery. This drink was summer in a glass. Not too bitter, not too sweet, just right! For our appy we ordered the chicken liver mousse and holy cannoli it was a hit! It came with delicious chewy bread from Bad Dog, pickled veg and insane caramelized onions. For our mains I got the squid ink tagliolini with prawns, crab and scallop. The noodles were perfection and the helping was a really great size. Just enough to get full off of but not sickeningly full. My mom ordered the fennel sausage pasta which came with a delicious creamy tomato base sauce and spinach. Seriously outstanding! I'm reluctant to review this place because the more the word gets out, the harder it's going to be to get reservations. Delicious, housemade pasta. The super fresh, locally sourced, award-winning salads were the highlight of the meal. Everything was just so delicious. Sitting in their garden felt like I was invited into their backyard. We traveled a long way from Oregon to find this wonderful experience of an Italian restaurant. Surely, this must be Italy. All our entrees, (6 of us) met all expectations after we got a chance to watch the chefs while waiting for our table out in the garden. Squid Ink seafood pasta...just like the photo. Salads fresh from their garden. The Bad Dog bread...met my definition of great "chewy bread". The staff wore us out with their hard work..they'll need tomorrow off to rest up.
