We went out for dinner at Piva last night. We had gone there once before and my husband was feeling like good Italian food and he remember Piva from a previous evening out, so we went to Piva. It was such a nice experience the last time that we decided to go again. What a disappointment. We shared the same pasta we had the last time and it was still really good Zio Italiano. For entrees my husband had the pizza special of the day and it was disappointing. We did not care for the taste and the crust was soggy. My husband had roast duck the last time we were there, and it was so good that I decided on it for my entree. Our waitress said that it was served medium rare. Duck breast generally is served medium rare so I didn't have an issue with this. When it came to the table it wasn't just rare it was raw. I couldn't cut it with my knife and I sent it back to the kitchen. I had a caprese salad - very expensive at $19.00. It was good but I've had much better. A man, who I believe was probably the manager came to the table to check on us and apologized for the duck. We shared a creme brulee for dessert. With a bottle of one of the reasonably priced wines at $60.00 our meal with tip was almost $200.00. Definitely not worth the money. It was so different from our last experience. It's unlikely that we would return. I gave it 5* last time. What a difference. It was so much better last time and although the pricing is the same we felt that received value for the money last time. read more

Our family was in New West, and we wanted to grab brunch. I checked Yelp, and Piva looked to be an highly reviewed spot, so we decided to try it out. I made reservations, but on arrival, it was clear we didn't need them as it wasn't that busy. The space is quite nice, similar if we were inside a Browns Social House or something similar. I only tried a few things: - Truffle Fries: Good. Lacked salt, but the grana padano provided enough umami - Breakfast Pizza: Good. A little different, but still fitting for brunch. I particularly like the pickled onion that added a bit of crunch and acidity to every bite. - Margherita Pizza: Good. More roasted tomato than I would normally see in a margherita, but still a good pizza. Service was very polite and attentive. No issues came up. Overall, I was a little impressed. Considering I've never heard of Piva before, it was pretty good food, good service in a nice setting. I'd consider returning. read more

Had been a regular at Piva a few years ago. I loved this place, a few "meh" meals and I stopped coming here. Yesterday my family had decided to have a early dinner here because they were in the area. I went reluctantly, I wish I had stayed home. The food has changed so much. I had the chicken parmigiana, we shared a beet salad. The beet salad tasted like someone went sprinkle happy with vinegar, It was so tart!. The chicken parmigiana was just horrible. I didn't' finish mine, neither did my sister-in-law. I don't know what my brother had. The pasta sauce was very brown, it didn't look anything like I have ever seen. We agreed that was our last meal at Piva. They are charging fine dining prices for very mediocre food. I phoned my family this morning to tell them how gross I felt all last night. My brother said he had to make a few trips to the washroom. I suggested they next time they are in the area, a better choice for Italian food would be The Old Spaghetti Factory. I will give one star for the service. read more

I got the Vongole (linguine with clams). It was the regular portion ($30) but lowkey I felt scammed by how small the portion was. I thought they mixed it up at first and gave me the small size. And then I thought maybe this was a quality over quantity place, but when I ate it the dish was really salt and oily, and I felt super dense after. Saltiness aside there was a good amount of garlic and chili flakes in it, but the meat in the clams were also really small so I felt like I was mostly licking the sauce from the shell. read more

Yes - highly recommend and am looking at going back next weekend already! Probably the best restaurant in New West and for good reason. Service was intentional and top level. Our waiter was quite chatty which our table liked the banter. His recommendations for wine and food were taken and did not disappoint. Their Happy Hour is very reasonable and we took advantage of! We started with drinks and the Arancini (risotto balls, wild mushroom, mozzarella, truffle aioli). The aioli was a perfect finish but they real deal is the cheese pull! It comes with cherry tomatoes but I wish they were roasted a bit. They are quite known for their cocktails so I jumped on their Jazzmine (empress gin, creme de cassis, elderflower syrup, lemon). A bit tart but amazingly fresh. And it hit me! I got the Mushroom Pizza (wild mushroom, cauliflower purée, fontina, fried sage, truffle oil) and I loved it! It was super thin (which was hard to hold/eat) but the mushrooms and cauliflower was so incredibly delicious! The server than comes around with parmesan to sprinkle on your food! Ordered crab cakes, arancini and Brussels sprouts for appetizers and they were all delicious. The main entrees though were a bit disappointing. My Vongole was so bland I had to ask for salt. Even with salt, it lacked sauce and the taste of white wine. The Wild Boar pasta was equally bland and flat. Meatballs didn't stand out. Beef Short Ribs: risotto underneath was delicious but the short ribs were dry and stringy. Mushroom Pizza was lacklustre. In short, none of the mains stood out last night. read more

Came here for happy hour, was mostly empty at got seated right away. Our server was great really funny and upbeat. We got a few glasses of wine, the happy hour wines are fine. For food we ordered the wild boar meatballs and the arancini. The meatballs were delicious, but the bread in the meatball sauce was magical! The arancini was also very good but extremely hot, be careful on the first bite! For dessert we got the for nonna which was a lovely inquiry way to have the philo and the mascarpone was really light and refreshing. I've some close friends who live in New West, just a block from this restaurant, and they dine here regularly and love it, so when I recently visited them, we popped in here for an early dinner. And I must say, it was truly a wonderful meal! The restaurant interior is open and spacious and large, situated on a corner lot, enclosed by window walls, so there is a ton of natural light. Beautiful tables in white linens, lovely light fixtures suspended above - elegant but casual, too, in an unpretentious way. This is an Italian restaurant, so naturally their menu has a varied selection of pastas, but they also have wonderful pizzas, too. My friends shared some of their daily features: potato soup (they said it was excellent), mushroom pizza (they've had this before and love it), and the pork belly (this dish had mixed reviews). Another friend with us had the charcuterie board (he loved it) and the potato soup (this soup sounds like it was the hit of the day! Everyone adored it). For me, I had the absolute best gnocchi of my life: the gnocchi itself were like soft little potato puffs (in the past, all the gnocchi I've had were way denser), and the dish also had the most wonderful artichoke hearts and eggplant and chick peas, all in this flavorful, light sauce. It truly was an amazing dish. And for $25, the portion was quite large; I brought half of it home, to have the following day. The wine list here is extensive, but my friends told me that it is not even remotely as large as it used to be, that the restaurant is in transition (I'm not sure if there are new owners, or if the wine managers are new here. All I know is, there are some big changes going on with the wine department here). I'm not a wine connoisseur or anything, so I can't speak to the changes here now. All I know is, they still have a lot of wines. A lot. My only issue with this restaurant pertains to the sound volume here. Our party was here at 3pm on a Sunday and the restaurant was empty save for a smattering of occupied tables. Still, what with the open layout of the interior, and with the background music playing, it was really hard for us to hear each other. I can't imagine how loud it would be if the place were full and busy! That said, I found the food here to be excellent, our server was super nice and attentive, the prices were reasonable for the high quality of food, and the portions, generous. Completely enjoyed the meal and our server was wonderful...very experienced in customer service. His timing & pacing of the courses was spot on. We shared the focaccia, the beet salad, the wild boar spaghetti and finally the halibut. All of these flavours were 'numero uno'! Would have any again. Came to Piva twice now, both for lunch! The decor is beautiful and welcoming atmosphere. The first time visiting I had no complaints about the service. The second time the service was quite slow to get our bill at the end of the meal, but nothing to not make me come back, our server was apologetic. I don't typically like warm olives but these were tasty! The pasta was filling, big portion for lunch. The second time visiting I got the duck sandwich with a mushroom soup. Arincini: rich earthy mushroom flavour. Gooey cheese and opped with a crispy sage leaf Wild boar pasta: creamy mushroom sauce, moist boar meatballs, chunks of mushroom. To die for Gnocchi: very tender gnocchi with a fresh tomato and vegetable flavour lemony Brussels sprouts: a bit one dimensional, I prefer them roasted to deep fried I guess. Not bad by any means, my fiancée who doesn't like them said they were really tasty for her. Didn't feel that oily which surprised me a bit, but overall it was a miss for me. Atmosphere is typical of a modern Italian place, it seems very classy, lighting was on the darker side the evening we were there, and the classical music playing was low enough that it was easy to carry a conversation. The seating area is quite large here, with a lot of windows since this is the corner of a large building, however, once you're inside it feels much more cozy and intimate. Great place for a date or other social gatherings if you ask me! Only real downside of the night was the espresso I ordered after dinner which had no crema and tasted _extremely_ overextracted, but it's a busy restaurant and not a Cafe, so I'd definitely give them a pass here, given how delicious our meal was. read more

We (my wife , 2 friends & myself) went for lunch yesterday to Piva Italian Restaurant located in New Westminster. We had made a reservation & were shown to our booth . The place was elegant , packed & yet the ambience was soothing & pleasant due to the quietness of the place & low voices of the customers. Our friends had the Wild Boar Pasta, Steak Salad , whilst my wife had the Veg Pasta & I had the Veg Burger. A platter of Focasia bread too was offered with Balsamic Olive oil. All the dishes were excellent in taste & well prepared. I felt the portions of the Pasta's could have been a " shade larger" in quantity. Only Tomato Ketchup was offered with the Burger & I had to ask for Tabasco sauce to spice up the food. There were no Salt or Pepper cellars at the table & on request Salt was provided in a porcelin dish along with the Tabasco Sauce. (I felt a spicer sauce like Matouks etc would have enhanced the taste further . A Desert platter was offered & this was excellent in taste. The service was very good . Prices were on the higher side . The salient feature of the restaurant was the extensive separate Vegetarian Menu which had Starters, Pasta's, Pizza's , Burgers etc. The kitchen was visible through the Glass walls & one could observe the cleanliness & efficiency of the Restaurant. Came here for dinner with some friends and I ordered the Di Mari. I ask the waiter if there was another option similar to this but with a cream base sauce since that is what I was craving. He said he can substitute the tomato sauce for Alfredo sauce instead. SOLD. I love cream based pastas. The sauce was amazingly delicious because of the prawns and scallops that were cooked in it. I wish they had used fresh pasta as that would have elevated the fish dish but I was still quite please by the flavours. The glass of Pinot Gris also complimented the pasta quite well. Our server was very friendly and attentive to all our needs. But I think considering the price of this place and how it was on the more "fancier" side, I wouldn't expect anything less. I think I might go back, but it didn't give me much of an urgency as a portions were a little small compared to the price. I'd say overall it was a good 3.5 out of five for me. read more

After driving past Piva many times over the past few years and thinking to myself "that looks like a cool place to try", the fiancé and made reservations to celebrate our a Valentine's Day. Thank goodness restaurant capacity restrictions were lifted! While the restaurant looked a lot bigger from the outside, the interior felt smaller and surprisingly tight. After we ordered our respective entrees (Lamb for me, NY Striploin for him), the waiter informed us that our entrees would take awhile to cook, and he would recommend we choose an appetizer. We had originally hummed and hawed about an appetizer and decided not to order one, but on his suggestion we added the Calamari Steak. It was only upon reflection that I decided a) the food did not take long to arrive at all, and b) it was an interesting way to go about getting someone to order an appetizer versus just asking the patrons in a straight forward manner. I'm still not sure if I feel impressed at the creativity, or a little slighted because of it. Focusing on the food, the Calamari Steak was a refreshing alternative to the fried calamari rings we were used to. It had the classic grill lines and a good solid/springy texture. I could only handle the spicy Pomodoro in small doses, but I could imagine it was a nice compliment against the more bland flavour of the calamari. I liked the Lamb Chops themselves as they had next to no gamey taste. Brussels Sprouts may not be a favourite dish because it can be quite bitter. I love myself some steamed brussels sprouts, but I found these ones quite bitter, because they had been baked until the outside were a blackened crisp and generously salted. I ended up tasted salty burnt vegetables every time I ate one. The gnocchi was creamy and doughy, but by the end I was full of complimentary bread and appetizer that the richness was almost too much to finish. We finished the evening with the Chef's Creation. While the menu said "please ask server for details", I was in the washroom when the fiancé ordered it (wanted it to be a surprise) and the waiter never told him what the desert was. It ended up being a nice compliment of a chocolate lava cake, ice cream dribbled with caramel sauce and a strawberry. A hot/cold gooey combination that never fails to disappoint. Perhaps I had too high expectations as a result of the anticipation (and seeing friends post about their amazing dinners there), but I found myself a tad disappointed by the experience. Maybe it started at the waiter's appetizer suggestion. He was very busy waiting on multiple tables. It felt like he was so busy waiting on multiple tables and not at all interested in answering any questions or exchanging a smile, he just wanted our orders before rushing off. It is a decent fancier place restaurant, but with all the great choices in the Lower Mainland area, I confess it may be awhile before I think of coming back to Piva for a special celebration. read more

Once you walk into the space, you immediately know what type of restaurant this is. From the menu, ambience to décor - everything screams modern Italian. We came on a weekend evening, and it was half empty, but quickly filled up throughout the night. They have a wide variety of drinks, summer specials, and sharing dishes on their menu. We ordered a ginger beer mocktail, which was surprisingly pleasant for someone who doesn't like ginger. The drink was refreshing and on the sweeter side because of the syrup. But as the ice melted, it helped cut down some of the sweetness. We each ordered a pasta dish and a side of fritters to share. The fritters were freshly fried into little crispy bites that weren't greasy at all. They were light, but not airy. I appreciate that the dish was vegetarian, and the addition of cauliflower made the fritters quite substantial though the fennel sides were a touch strong for us. I am a die-hard fan of vongole; it is one of my favourite go-to pastas. The one here was enjoyable. Every component was prepared and executed well though it didn't blow my mind away. The noodles were al dente, the sauce wasn't too salty and was flavourful, and there was ample of clams. There was a slight brininess to the dish from the clams, but it wasn't unbearable or unpleasant. We also ordered the wild boar pasta, which was creamy and very earthy. The truffle oil came to the party but was not overpowering or the centre of attention. The pasta was al dente, and the meatballs were soft and tender. The dish was very earthy with the addition of mushrooms, but the arugula gave it a nice kick of bitterness. Food is a solid 3/5, but the overall experience is a 4/5. Our server great and very attentive. Our glasses were topped off and he checked up on us before bringing out our mains. They gave us a complimentary dessert and he even helped us rearrange our table for a quick photo like a pro. The only downside is that the tables were quite close to each other, so diners don't get a lot of privacy in the open space. Other than that, it was a great meal with memorable service. read more

Had a wonderful time being on a double date with our close friends. We enjoyed having a great meal at Priva. They were very efficient in seating guests, bringing the menu, serving our food, etc. I really appreciated our server, Zaldy, who made great recommendations and gave us impeccable service. He made sure we were well-hydrated. He was very efficient in bringing our food and appetizers. For my hubby and I, we got the Vongole and Di Mare (seafood fettuccini) I find the Vongole tastier than the Di Mare. Maybe because of the garlic with the clams. Would love to go back to try other dishes in the menu. I highly recommend making reservations because they get a line up of eager diners even before they open. read more

I felt very welcomed and not rushed through my meal even though I was alone and did not have a reservation. It was a spur of the moment decision to pop by for brunch after I was done with my appointment. I had always wanted to try the food but somehow did not have time to do so until recently. I was undecided between ordering the usual brunch items or the burger or pasta which were also available for lunch or dinner. I finally decided on the Mediterranean eggs Benny which came with avocado and crabmeat plus hash. The hash was fantastic! Crispy edges and fluffy soft potato. The eggs Benny was served on focaccia and I liked that. It was softer and soaked up the runny yolk and sauce better. The eggs were perfect with runny yolks for the win. However they had a tinge of sour taste, probably from poaching with vinegar? I also had a brunch cocktail -- Italian Sunrise. It was strong. Tasty. The amount of alcohol justified the price. I liked how the straw was made of pasta. Nice! The place was spacious and good for either a date or with the girls for a cozy chat. I will definitely be back for the other dishes. I really liked this restaurant. I thought the ambiance was quite pretty with it's hanging lights. The food was great. We ordered the arincini and mushroom pizza to start. They were both very good. My main was the Di Mare. This is my new favourite seafood pasta dish. It's also a great price compared to places such as Italian kitchen. The For Nonno was popular with my cousins. For dessert we ordered the lemon tart and the seasonal pumpkin dessert that didn't really taste like pumpkin at all, but it was still good. The coffee we had with our desserts was strong but good. The drinks were quite nice. I enjoyed the Jazzmine and I appreciate that they offer Peroni. Now the service was a bit pushy. We felt rushed to order our mains as we were told it could take a long time to make. We also found out waiter was push about ordering more drinks. I've never liked pushy servers. Piva was recommended to us by a friend and turned out to be the perfect venue for a celebration brunch. As soon as we walked in, I was enchanted by the open space and decor. The restaurant was unexpectedly quiet for brunch service which was great for us as we were able to take our time. As someone who does not like traditional brunch items, Piva hit the mark with their attractive -imo lunch- menu. They also have a bevy of enticing summer cocktails and mocktails that I wish I tried. I ordered the duck sandwich ($18 duck breast, fig jam, pancetta, arugula, mozzarella, apple, mayo, house-made focaccia), while my friends ordered fried chicken and waffles, and modern italian pizza (cornish game hen, capicola, braised garlic, alfredo, onion, smoked mozzarella, arugula & almond pesto). The duck breast was good though presented a little too much like deli meat. The real star was the house-made focaccia. It was so fluffy and flavourful and enhanced the sandwich ingredients. Our reso was made well over a month ago ( booth requested ) but we ended up being seated at a table only a few feet away from the busy entrance , so obviously our Valentine's dinner was partially ruined early on in the night . However our server was courteous , efficient and helpful , but an exemplary staff member couldn't possibly save the evening if the food presented to us was meh at best . The polenta fries relied too heavily on its accompanying pomodoro sauce , the arancini tasted exceptionally bland and the mushroom pizza unbelievably soggy .
