I am a regular sushi enthusiast who eats very well in New York City. I'm always in search of a good place to eat in the Hudson Valley. This place was a disappointment. Soup was tepid, beer was tepid. Oshinko appetizer should have had a minimum of three varieties. Mine was one...the yellow kind. There was a brown kind which I tried and rejected as too old and soft to be tempting. Tuna tartar was boring, more tempura flakes than tuna, and the tuna, like all the other fish, tasted packaged in plastic rather than trimmed and chopped by the chef. The chirqshi main course was unimaginative and the fish, once again, seemed packaged, not fresh. The best thing served was the rice, which was well presented beneath the chirashi, once you removed the lettuces and radish which was out of place in this dish. The rice should have been topped by flying fish eggs or shredded baked salmon skin. The two waitresses made no attempt to be friendly, nor did they inquire about my satisfaction. They just removed uneaten dishes and asked no questions. If you are seeking good sushi, look elsewhere. As a final note, two large families with children seemed to be having a good time. My evaluation is that of a gourmet seeking heaven on earth sushi in a backwater location. Had it been terrific, I'd be eating here every week. Ed read more

I ate here a few years ago on my way north on a recommendation. I honestly don't remember a thing about it. Last night, I had a hockey game at the nearby rink, so we decided to give it another shot. Certainly a better choice than beer and wings after a heavy workout.... We ordered several rolls and pieces a la carte - mostly simple stuff; the most complex was the Tokyo roll with salmon, avocado, tuna and tobiko on the outside. We scoured the menu for the rolls that did not include tempura, mayo or any kind of sauce. There are lots of specialty rolls that are "americanized" with sauces and fried stuff...they looked very good... but we need to stay away from anything with soy due to an allergy. The fish was surprisingly fresh...I really wasn't expecting it to be as good as it was. Everything was tasty and served at just the right temperature. The food also arrived very quickly...so that was a nice bonus. Quick in and out...then back on the road for the hour and a half drive home. Have been going here for years and was really looking forward to it. The place was pretty empty tonight. We were the only table but another gentleman sat down about 10 minutes after us. after us. We ordered maki and salads. The gentleman who came after us was served well before us. And our sushi came out before our salads. But while we would see the server go to the gentleman to see if he needed anything else, she never came back to check on us. A refill on our drinks might have been nice, but what we wanted to point out to her is that was a hair in one of our drinks....life goes on. And the price for the amount we ordered was steep. Let's start by saying that the decor is super nice. It's dim lit, romantic, and there's an easy listening music track in the background. I also enjoyed the decor: there's sake bottles with mini paper cranes sitting on top of them that are lining the windows of the restaurant. Adorable! This restaurant is huge. We were here on a weekday night so it was pretty empty, but does this place ever get full on the weekends?? The food was not spectacular but it did do better than my low expectations. My partner and I ended up getting a sushi boat for two ($50). Twenty pieces of sashimi, eight pieces of nigiri, and two rolls. Also comes with miso soup and salad for each person. It was about average pricing for the "city". The fish was not that fresh, but not that bad. The yellowtail or tuna was probably the best of the night. The sushi rice was lightly flavored, but really they should have flavored more. (For those that don't know, half the battle in delicious sushi is flavoring the rice with rice wine and sugar, and making sure it's at the right temperature.) The service was also fast and friendly. I tried sushi for the first time at this place when I was a child. I've been going out with family since. Generally I've never had bad fish from this place. I've really only eaten their miso soup, salads, and sushi. I love that the chef makes it right in front of you, and they have a variety of specials that you can't find in any sushi place. Prices are DECENT for sushi. My family enjoys their hibachi dinners. The prices are average for the dinners as well but it comes with Miso Soup and a salad (same with sushi dinners) Service is good overall although last time it was a bit slower. We've tried every Sushi restaurant within 40 miles of Saugerties, and Tomo's food, presentation, and quality is the best around. Don't be dissauaded by the strip mall exterior, the interior is nicely decorated, and the staff is very friendly and attentive. We usually sit at the sushi bar and chat up the owners, who are all too happy to chat back even when it's busy. The atmosphere is warm and friendly. As somewhat regulars, Peter and Annie offer us Sake as a thank you for coming back over and over again. We recommend the Tomo roll, Mexican roll, and Black Dragon roll (with eel), and the Tuna Martini! For appetizers we love the crab stick salad and spicy cucumber salad. read more

While passing through Saugerties, I stumbled upon this place. I was at the CVS in the same strip mall and noticed it across the parking lot. Based simply on location - strip mall sushi in a remote location, I wasn't expecting much,. However, this was a pleasant surprise. It was a snowy night so there weren't many customers, so the staff was really attentive. The waitress brought me tea, refilled my water glass, brought out a rag to wipe up my spilled soy-u. Salad and soup were promptly brought out. The soup was a little plain with no real flavor but the salad was decoratively presented and not overloaded with dressing. I ordered a Chirashi bowl. At $20 with soup and salad, this was a good deal. It was huge. There were many varieties of Sashimi. The rice was garnished with tiny fish eggs (sorry I forgot the Japanese name for the small eggs), the Maguro and Sake were excellent. There were several other varieties including Tamago and Ebi. The only one which was not great was Tako and this can be excused since it is a little unusual that Tako isn't tough. The atmosphere and decor was peaceful. If you are passing through Saugerties, I recommend Tomo. read more

Salad plate was good as well but the entree, well presented and delicious as well. Tomo Sushi and Steak, woah two great foods. Looking around the area for some food to eat after hiking and sushi sounded great. Stopped by, there is a lot of parking. It's located in the middle of a complex. Lighting was very dark and it added to the ambiance of the restaurant. The restaurant wasn't very busy as we were the only ones when came in, maybe 3 or 4 other customers entered and ordered food. It was around 6 pm. I ordered the Age (Agedashi) Tofu and the Mexican roll (spicy sauce, tempura flakes, salmon and avocado in, egg out). My friends both ordered Dinner Bento Boxes, one chicken teriyaki and one steak teriyaki. The agedashi tofu came out first. Came out very hot and there was a lot of tofu that came in thick columns in a nice Tentsuyu broth. It's a Japanese tempura dip. The broth was nice and warm. Very sweet and strong. There were some orange flavor notes there which was really pleasant. The tentsuyu was full of flavor from soy sauce. The tofu was golden and crisp on the top and on the bottom it soaked up some of the sauce which made it really delicious. I think they could elevate the dish by adding some bonito flakes on top. The tofu was really great though. The Mexican roll was pretty good. You could really taste the salmon and avocado hitting their complimentary notes together. Tempura and spicy sauce bringing it all together. Great roll. I tried some of the chicken teriyaki from one of my friend's bento box and it was really flavorful. The onions which were sauteed and in a soy sauce were smooth. For dessert we had the fried tofu ice cream. Fried consistency of a light tasting tofu cover over good vanilla ice cream and a little bit of chocolate syrup. Can't go wrong. Anyways pretty good meal. read more

This place has by far the best sushi in the Hudson Valley. The atmosphere is awesome and the owners are very friendly. The last time I went I ended up doing Saki Bombs with the owner Annie. Low light and the dark wood decor make this place romantic as well. The only gripe I have is that they play some pretty boring music. Think of "Hotel California" covered by an Asian Pan Flute artist. But its the closest thing to good NYC sushi around... much better than whole foods sushi which would do in a pinch. SERVICE: 3 stars. I was told to wait 15 minutes when I walked it, yet there were empty tables... then the waitress didn't want me to order what I ordered since I wanted it with white tuna instead of red tuna (as my date did not like red tuna).
