My friend and I had a great meal here, and I guess the news on this place is out in Kingston, because it was lunchtime on Christmas Eve, and the place was solidly busy, for dine in and takeout. We started with a drink, I had hot sake and she had a glass of wine, and we were both happy with our choices. We had miso soup, always good, and three rolls, salmon avocado, a Tokyo roll, and a roll with tuna (I can't remember which one, probably due to the sake). Yes, we called the order in. We had one miso soup ( the tofu was cut so so thin ) , but the broth was good , Then we had a lot of raw fish and shrimp tempura, which was on a bed of shredded lettuce, which was a little wet and made the tempura a little mushy. Kyoto Sushi is an excellent restaurant and I always go there when I travel to Kingston. The food is fresh and delicious. In addition to sushi and sashimi, there is a tofu appetizer that I like and lots of other things on the menu. One of my favorites is their rainbow roll. I have family in Kingston and we often order their food to take out. It's never a long wait and everyone can find things that they like. I highly recommend Kyoto Sushi. read more

Very disappointed with the service tonight. We were informed the kitchen.closed in 25 minutes so we hurried up to give them our order so they had time to have food prepared. We didn't get our appetizer until after our sushi and had to ask for it. Then, we were told that they were closed at 9, so we needed to pay our bill even though we were still eating. They did not ask if we wanted another glass of wine...bad business model totally. I will think twice before I return to this place. I have been here a number of times and the food is REALLY good, the people are very friendly and it is not that expensive. It is small but intimate. I have had the spicy salmon roll several times and it has never failed to impress. I went with my wife and had the aforementioned spicy salmon roll, the spicy tuna roll, the crispy potato roll and the salmon roll. All good. It is quiet and relaxing. Go. Really. Hands down the best sushi in Kingston. Large and accommodating, great service, delicious fish, reasonable prices, huge menu, good sake selection. This is our go-to spot and it never disappoints! I prefer Kyoto to Sushi Makio (which for some reason people love around here). Their prices are high, portions are small, and menu is limited. Always delivers the best, fresh flavors and quality fish even after my 2 year Covid break its a joy to come back to the smiling staff and great sushi chefs. We did notice the size of the plates reduced slightly while the prices did go up by in some cases 25% --It's understandable given our circumstances. Ok, I'm a bit of a snob when it comes to sushi, but I gotta tell ya, Kyoto is the best sushi I've found in Ulster County, hands down. Consistently, the fish is fresh, the service at the sushi bar is rockin' and they always have some yummy special rolls to try. I love the Kamakazi Roll, I get that one every time. There's nothing too far out of the ordinary here, but everything is really delish. Now my son is starting to try things, and the guys at the sushi bar are very acommodating, they give him things to try and are very friendly in pointing out the different types of fish in the case. I can't tell you how many times I've eaten here over the past five years or so, but I can tell you that EVERY meal I've had here has been fresh and very good. read more

We've been going here for years and have always enjoyed eating here. Last night we celebrated our anniversary. Service was excellent, and we never felt rushed (a big peeve of mine). However, the scallop teriyake that used to be simply prepared and excellent, seemed dredged in flour before cooking. It was still good, but a little mushy, and not as good as I remembered. Coming from Chicago, I thought the sushi would be fresher and taste better but I was wrong. I know I'm not in NYC but this should be better considering its proximity. I had the spider roll which looked good on the plate but fell apart as soon as I picked it up. The rice wasn't sticky enough nor did the crab taste spectacular. It's as if they gave me the cheap part of the crab... My wife had the dragon roll and it came out piping hot. Not a good start. We go to Kyoto all the time. It's not the sushi that has me dreaming about it for the next 3 days, but it's VERY good and reasonably priced. Their takeout is generally ready in 10-15 minutes and the quality is very consistent. And I love their rice! They also have great appetizers. Try the fried oysters or the squid salad. YUM! "Bones in my Sashimi" I had to think long and hard if to leave a bad review since I have been going to kyoto with my family for years basically since it opened. We mostly like Kyoto and have enjoyed our meals there. We have been going there almost every Saturday for date night since they opened again because it has felt safe and clean. They only have four tables open on one side and we go early so it isn't busy and we like the waiter there who is very nice and now knows exactly what my husband likes by heart since he orders the same thing every time. Last night I ordered their sonomono appetizer, which is raw fish in ponzu sauce, there were two bones in my fish and thank God I chew my food well so I caught them both. I let him know and he let the manager and sushi chefs know and there was no apology or anything. So I dismissed it. Then I had sashimi deluxe and was really enjoying it until I got another quite large hard bone in my salmon sashimi. I again complained and showed the bone and no apology or anything. You would think they would be mortified about that mistake but no. I told my waiter that I would like a ten dollar discount to acknowledge this almost choking incident for me and he came back and said the sushi chefs and manager said you can have one free salmon sashimi piece on the house and I said I don't want any more food and rather have a discount or two free avocado rolls to take home to our boys and they said no. The waiter said I can talk to the manager if I want and the sushi chefs so I went up and was a bit angry at this point. I stood there mask on in front of the sushi bar saying how I have been a loyal patron for so many years and I could have choked on not one but three bones and they can't even make a good faith gesture of discounting ten dollars. No one looked at me which made me upset and then the manager said we offered you a piece of sashimi and I said I didn't want that and if they don't deduct I don't want to pay. She said I always complain about every thing all the time and she will call the police. At this point I was upset and said go ahead call the police and asked her to let me know what I have complained about that warrants not acknowledging their mistake and she just kept saying you complain. Then she said leave and never come back so my husband and I left without paying having been banned forever from kyoto and having had a big scene there which made everyone very uncomfortable. My regret is I didn't leave the nice waiter a tip. Looking back at my time at kyoto I have always sent back things when they weren't good. Yesterday we sent back our miso soup because it was super salty which is not typical if their miso soup. I have sent back their seaweed salad several times over the years because it wasn't fresh and they tried to sell it after peak. I have sent back sashimi that had white tuna in it when I specifically asked for no white tuna and they returned it with some other fish. We have always gone back to kyoto because we like their sushi rolls and the sashimi is decent. It isn't the best but we liked kyoto because it has been somewhere we have enjoyed going out to and the restaurant is comfortable and it felt familiar. My husband likes their cooked salmon teriyaki with their caramelized onions and the shrimp tempura. I felt hurt that after so many years when I had three bones in my sashimi which is a major no no at a Japanese restaurant they didn't care at all that I could have choked and didn't make a gesture to say they were sorry. It felt like really bad costumer service. I rarely ever leave reviews and this one is so long probably no one is reading it but it was a bit of a shocking experience and it really triggered me not to be respected after all these years being a loyal regular costumer. My advise is go there but chew your food well and don't expect them to make any changes or accommodation to your needs. They are quite rigid in their ways but we went there anyway. read more

Went to eat there with my teenage daughters Took over 30 minutes to bring us drinks -water- no straws had to wave down another waiter to bring straws. After 30 waitress came over and said o I thought you were waiting for other people. She served 3 other tables that came after us but apparently were regulars and she was giving priority to take out orders. Finally when she took the order she brought out appetizers gave no napkins or any utensils- had to wave down another waiter. One shrimp had a hair on it and something hard and foul tasting in its batter - my daughter almost vomited. Didn't bring all the items forgot the fried rice My sushi order of uni-sea ur him roe had old mixed with new roe. The rest of the order was ok. I figured whatever . Then I asked for the bill and ask to please make sure not to charge me for the rice she didn't bring.she said check it yourself . I did and she didn't take it of I guess thinking I would miss it , didn't come back for another 20 minutes I brought it to the register and finally complained. They took it of but now the preemptively added a 18% tip I noticed it and said the tip /gratuity amount was up to the customer. They got nasty and said I had to pay and include the tip . I said no I have to pay my bill and I decide the gratuity. She said that if I don't give her a tip she would get me . Finally they canceled the extra amount and put the correct one while surrounding me. I felt threatened. Paid and left. My kids got spooked and left the restaurant first. Worst experience. Tried to rip me of twice and served mediocre food with service and quality issues . Guess they don't care because they are one of the only sit in sushi restaurants. Also to many people at once in the restaurant seething people next to each other and several people closer than three feet waiting to pick up and put in orders very crowded unsafe. I got the Alaskan Roll and Spicy Tuna Roll... which I get everywhere I go and they were pretty average. Price was I think like $4.25 a roll (6 pcs) which was decent. Not a lot of lunch specials. Started off with Pork Dumplings, they were pretty good. My boyfriend got a noodle bowl and it was huge. Pretty good flavor. His also came with a cucumber salad which came in a really small bowl. I am a very difficult customer to consistently please. I have my own complaint website so with that said I want to go on record saying I like this place a lot. I have been going to this place for the last 4 years, traveling 1 hour in each direction to get there. I am also a big FOOD and SUSHI enthusiast, eating sushi and more at every imaginable location in the continental US, and some of the more pricey restaurants in NYC. Hands down the most consistent sushi experience. My partner always gets the crispy duck, which varies sometimes, but not enough to critique it harshly. He pairs it with a vegetable fried rice and the orange flavored duck sauce goes very well with the duck and rice. We also love the hamachicama, shumai is great, their miso soup is usually as good. Most of all I love their salad dressing and if I could duplicate it would eat salad for every meal. The salad itself is cheap iceberg lettuce but hey this isn't fine dining. It's worth visiting. I even recommend their kyoto spilt but opt out of the chocolate and Americanized flavors and try more red bean or green tea. If you are here for American food go elsewhere. Don't spoil your own experience. Try some of the stranger things on the menu you wont be disappointed. read more

But the miso soup is a bit too watery, the sushi pieces are rather small (especially not as much rice under the fish as you see it in Japan), and I found the rolls too tenacious. Stumbled across this place while looking for food around 9:00pm on a Tuesday night, and WOW did we luck out!! It's clear from the outside that it's a real sushi bar, and the food was amazing. I usually won't order sashimi from a place I'm not familiar with but we definitely should have here. Had hamachikama, which was good, and some rolls off the specials page: Shrimpy Mango ($5) was a shrimp tempura with mango roll, and a Spicy Tempura Tuna roll was HEAVEN ($7.50). The tuna in the spicy tuna was absolutely amazing, not overloaded with mayo, and then the whole roll was fried in tempura (pure decadence). Also had an octopus salad ($7), which wasn't swimming in ponzu like many are, but was just super tender slices of octopus on daikon with scallions and sauce. YUM! And finally, pieces of uni sushi which were absolutely PERFECT. Just amazing. Reasonable price, nice hot sake, and I wish I lived closer! read more

I have to give it 5 stars because I live around the street and eat there at least 2 times a week. Right now I'm totally addicted to their udon noodle bowl which comes with shrimp tempura on the side. The broth is unreal! Noodles perfect, could use a little more chicken, but otherwise it is perfect. I've eaten all the sushi and sashimi and rolls and it is all great. My favorite local sushi place. the staff are incredibly sweet and the food is wonderful (spicy tuna tempura roll, yaki udon are among my faves here) a nice selection of sake and japanese beer. and don't forget to order dessert because the kyoto split with green tea, red bean and vanilla ice cream with tempura banana cannot be missed. the service i also very speedy, even on busy weekend nights my boyfriend and i have always been in, eating and out within an hour.
