There's quite a bit of discourse around the best sushi spot in Vail and let me say there are only 5 restaurants on the Michelin Guide for Vail. and only 1 of them is a Japanese restaurant....guess which one? Yup, Osaki. They only take reservations via phone and only for 24 hours before, so we did just that. Walked in on Tuesday for a Wednesday reservation. We sprang for the omakase and I'll list out what we had below but it was all delightful and likely will change for you. They fly their fish fresh in from Japan! Our omakase adventure: 1) miso soup - we were asked if we want this first or later. We picked first. It had nicely diced pieces of shiitake 2) a little duo of cold marinated seaweed from Okinawa with little Japanese ice fish. The lighter counterpoint was the 3 types of mushroom in what chef called a "Japanese broth" which I'll bet is soy / bonito based 3) tempura - this tempura was so special! Featuring all my favorite shellfish friends like snow crab, shrimp, clam!! Then we moved into the stellar fish starting with * Tai (red snapper) * Shima Aji (Striped amber Jack) * Hotate with yuzu mentaiko - I love hotate (scallop) and this was ultra fresh. My hubby, who doesn't usually like fish eggs was down for the mentaiko too! * Aji (mackarel). - it was topped with ground ginger and shallots - okay what a preparation! Perfect with the typically kind of oily mackarel. * Black cod topper with sweet miso - okay insane. I've only had miso black cod at Katsuya in LA or Nobu (ofc). This preparation is wild. Like all those flavors in a lightly seared format * Mirugai (Giant clam or geoduck) - I don't see this often nor would it be my first choice but it was wonderful! Just a bit of a firmer texture than fish, as expected * Golden eye snapper with yuzu kosho - ate this one so fast I didn't grab a picture!!!! So so good. I also just love yuzu kosho but this complemented rather than overpowered. * Otoro - just expertly cut and seasoned. Also the temperature was perfect. Because of how fatty it is, I've had it in ways that make me a little gaggy but not here!! * Toro hand roll - amazing! No complaints - the chef's secret here is a lil' kewpie (spicy!). Make fresh so there was no soggy seaweed! * Red bean mochi ice cream - we could pick from strawberry, vanilla, green tea, red bean. They obviously don't make this in-house but it was a nice ending! Osaki is a hidden gem!!

Expensive, but Delicious!! Very quaint, only a few tables, but super fresh sushi. They change their menu daily so you order from a menu on their dry erase board. Everything we had was yummy. Our favorite was the salmon shrimp tempura and rainbow roll (which was not on the menu but they were able to accommodate).

Their sushi is amazing. One of the best I ever had. Maybe because is so expensive and I had to enjoy every minute of it. Hamachi Kama was so delicious! Cooked right and fresh. Toto and salmon belly melts in your mouth. Too bad I can only afford so much

Had my fair share of quality sushi and I'd have to say Osaki's is at the top of the list. They fly their fish in overnight from Japan and you can taste the freshness. We went twice in 4 days and didn't regret it one bit!

Totally unexpected to find what turns out to be one of the best sushi restaurants in the country in Vail Colorado. This small intimate sushi bar/restaurant imports its fish directly from Japan, and has some of the freshest, best prepared sushi I've ever had (which says a lot given that I'm from NYC which has some great sushi). The Omakase is the best bet, paired with one of their impressive selections of Sake. Be prepared to pay about $100+ per person, but well worth the price!

Came to Vail for my first time and had Osakis for my first dinner and loved it so much I came back the night before I left. The fish is so fresh! We did a la carte the first night and tried everything we wanted and did omakase the second night and that was really nice to try some things we normally wouldn't have ordered. The chefs were so friendly and made our experience so fun! It's a very small and intimate restaurant, make reservations before you go. Definitely coming back next time I'm in Vail!

An intimate spot serving up some of the best sushi I've ever had! If you're going on a weekend, highly recommend making a reservation. The nigiri omakase was 100% worth it. Each bite was so fresh and delicious. We also got toro hand rolls and the fish was fatty and luxurious, the perfect complement to super crisp nori! Perfect spot for a date night or small group looking for quality sushi in the mountains!

Got the spicy tuna and spicy salmon. The quality is superb.. price is on the expensive side but its fine... what i didnt like is the automatic gratuity... its just a major turn off for that...

The best Omakase experience of my life! Nothing else said, please do visit, the chef and staff truly cares about the customers and ensuring the experience match their expectation!!

Oh my oh my. Treated my fiancé for his 31st birthday. Definitely visiting again. We loved every second. Took a break from stuffing our face just so we could sit in the magical sushi presence for a bit longer. Service was fantastic! We had the Hispanic woman start with us but I think they realized that we knew what we were doing so the Japanese male started to serve us. Perfect!! He knew everything and gave us spectacular service. Funny and expressive too! Didn't catch his name but he needs a raise haha. Hot sake was great. Nigiris were mouth watering delicious. I personally tried uni for the first time because of the boys faces haha it looked like it was the best they ever had. And man oh man was it buttery deliciousness. It was very clean inside and they gave us matcha(green tea) ice cream for my fiancé's bday. Even sang! Start to finish. Wonderful experience. 1 thing. It's a straight Japanese experience in Vail. So expect a good price with the meal. Like I said...I took him there for a treat. So it's not cheap.

Updated Review from December 2019 Still the best sushi you can buy, if you are a sushi love you need to try this place. I travel around the world a lot and eat sushi everywhere. Some of the places I frequent are Los Angeles, Las Vegas, New York and Miami Fl. I can say hands down this is the best sushi place in the United States. It compares to places I have been to in Tokyo Japan. Don't go here if you are going to complain about price the quality of food is most then a fair

If you want authentic Szechuan this is the place! What we got: - Wonton soup - homemade dumplings had a good ginger and garlic flavor. Big enough for two as an app. - Double cooked pork - absolutely outstanding. Big portion with vegetables, fermented black beans, so good! - Spicy crispy fish - highly recommend this if you like spicy food. I love this dish whether the chicken or fish variations and this might have been the best I've had! I can't say enough about the Chinese food. We were blown away with how good they were. Our server Patrick was incredible. He was so friendly and welcoming. He's a serious skier and you can often find him backpacking 30+ pounds of cooking gear to make fresh food slope side! We have tried many places in Vail and I highly, highly, highly recommend this place. The interior is small so I recommend making a reservation. Pro tip: it's BYOB so bring a bottle of wine or a few beers!

Since I'd parked at Lions Head, before I returned to Denver, I considered the Vail Chophouse, as their menu looked delicious, however when I went inside, the live music was so loud - even with my noise-canceling headphones still in- that I still couldn't hear, and knew I'd blow out my ear drums. Enter: Montauk Seafood Grill, the perfect antidote, with an equally appealing menu, and a much more serene ambiance. :-) Given I was famished, I asked my wonderful server, Brenn, for recommendations, and she was - hands down - one of the best servers I've had, in a long time. She was friendly, attentive, honest, and an all around delight. I started by asking her suggestion, as to if I should order the "Blood Moon" or "Happy Coconut" mocktail, and she recommended the Blood Moon, which was delicious! I love Blood Orange, and it had the perfect combination of mint, to be both sweet & sour. I needed a mocktail, given I was driving back to Denver, after dinner. She then brought me delicious Rosemary Sourdough and Citrus Butter, as a starter, which was fantastic, especially given I needed all the carbs, from skipping lunch, riding so much, and from fasting the night before, for a prior medical appointment, that morning, in Denver, hence my late start, snowboarding. Then I ordered - and loved - the Point Reyes Blue Cheese Crusted Filet Mignon, medium rare, with the most delicious asparagus I've ever had, and I was grateful that they could make my truffle potatoes, whipped, instead of hash brown style. I ended my delicious dinner with a cappuccino, for the drive home. Perfection!

We're staying at the Grand Hyatt, which has been... fine. Meh, if we're being honest. A local recommended Mountain Standard, so we tried to make a reservation on OpenTable and quickly learned they were booked solid until tomorrow (a great data point, btw). But, being the swarthy pirates that we are, we showed up anyway; and thank sweet baby Jesus, we found two seats at the bar. Our barkeep, Gummow, a fellow swarthy pirate, was excellent in every possible way. His bar back, Rowan, could not have been a better support man. Together, they delivered the kind of service that makes you remember why hospitality is an art form. And the food? Absolutely to die for. My girlfriend had the oxtail, and I had the mock paella. Both were incredible. The service, the food, the environment; every facet was dialed in. We will be going back tomorrow for lunch, possibly dinner, and possibly to inquire about monthly rent.
