After we had a large, diseased oleander removed near the side of our house, the bin area it hid was clearly visible from the street. The bin area had become uneven and is next to outdoor steps leading to the back of the house. We told Oscar that we would like the oleander stump removed, the bin area more level, a fence to hide the bins, and a railing to make the steps safer. He came up with a great plan that did it all. He and his assistant, Brian, made the bin area more level and larger by about 15 square feet. The fence turned out great, and he crafted the railing so it matches original railings on the front of the house perfectly. Both the fence & railing are securely anchored. Oscar does great work at a great price! We used him for (what I thought) was a very complicated job, removing part of a staircase and putting in sliding glass doors, and it looks great. Many handymen would not agree to do it, saying it was too complex or they did not have the know-how, but Oscar came through for us! Recently we used him to put in overhead garage storage racks, and he also did a great job on that. Communication can be slow -- sometimes requiring multiple texts and eventually needed to call to get a response, and had some issues with him cancelling in the past, but that did not happen in our most recent work with him. Long story short, he completely screwed us over. He knew we needed a few projects done before leaving the state. A week before we are supposed to leave, he no shows on us. Gives a lousy apology and says he forgot to tell us that he couldn't come that day he can't come out for another three days. Then informs us that the project (building a simple box around an A/C) will take multiple days to complete and $700 just for the box. Not even to finish installing and painting it. WHAT AN ABSOLUTE JOKE. I went to Home Depot and for $121 and 4 hours of my time the job is done. Also, he did come out and patch some holes in the ceiling from lighting a few weeks ago. One of the patch jobs is already cracked and looks horrible. But I guess we are stuck with it since he won't answer any of my phone calls. I really wish I could keep Oscar the Handyman a secret because he is just amazing. But alas, I have to share how amazing his services are. I asked for quotes from 10 different vendors. A few didn't reply, many said they couldn't do all the things we asked and the ones that did overcharged for their work. Oscar was one of the few who could do everything we asked at a reasonable price. Not only is Oscar honest, punctual, detail oriented, and hard working, his work speaks for itself. We asked him to repair our recessed lighting (which was no easy task), replace our garbage disposal, and repair our fascia on our roof. All three tasks were done with care and detail. We couldn't even tell that the fascia is repaired because it blended so well with the original frame. I'll also add that he has really good manners- he took great care to not mess up our lawn and even cleaned up after himself and disposed everything properly. We called Oscar desperate because our ceiling fan stopped working. Oscar answered and said he was working on another job all day but would stop by after to fix the fan. As soon as I hung up with him, the shelves in my closet completely collapsed!!!! Oscar showed up promptly, at the time he said he would, and with the parts we needed. I was looking forward to giving Oscar a 5-star rating like so many other people but when there was a problem with his work, he chose to not take responsibility, and when I was willing to share repair costs, he ghosted me. I hired him to remove our asphalt driveway and replace with cement. I did this despite there being no references for him doing this type of work, but with all the glowing reports from his other work, and his assurance he could do it, we agreed to his fair price for the work. He couldn't. The finish is wavy, with a significant problem noted after the cement was dry and I could check drainage which directed the water toward our foundation rather than toward the street drain. His response was that he leveled the cement in the same manner as the asphalt, but we never had this drainage problem. I don't know if I noted how the water must drain toward the street drain, though it is standard to direct water away from the house. He offered to bring in a consultant and we agreed to meet again, but on my follow-up, he never responded. When I threatened a bad review and small claims court, he surfaced again but only to disappear again. I hired another contractor to fix the problem, and while I opted against legal action (life is too short), felt obligated to share my experience. I liked him, but made a mistake having him do this work. Hire with caution. read more
