This is a wonderful little seafood restaurant. It is over the river bridge from the main walking street. The good was amazing and light. We had a wine from the south of France owned by an Irishman. If I could give this place a ZERO I would. Apparently they don't serve single people so you better make sure not to come alone! I walked into the restaurant and asked for a table, the waiter said yes and asked "how many" and I told him just me. He gave me the rudest look and told me that the restaurant does not serve less than 2 people. I asked him why not and he looked around the room and then looked at me and told me "because we don't have tables for 1". I could not believe how ridiculous that sounded ESPECIALLY because waiters in Ireland do not make money off of tips (general rule not to tip unless exceeds expectations). So why the heck does he care how many are sitting at a table?! I would have ordered enough food and drinks for two but he was SO RUDE!! I will make sure I spread the word not to go to the place!!! Phenomenal seafood restaurant!!!! I highly recommend this place. We got drinks, salad and chowder. The chowder was one of the most delicious I've ever had. It had a smoky flavor. Oscars has a great deal for dining during the week where I had a large plate of mussels and spring rolls for 15 euros. They also have other 2 course options for 15 euros during the week for dinner. We loved their drink menu since they had good wine, great Irish whiskey, and IPA. The calamari was awesome and our favorite. My friend got the steak which was chewy and I would recommend sticking with their seafood. The mussels and mashed potatoes were very good. Spring rolls were ok. Service was very good. Oh my gosh, if you are visiting Galway and love seafood, please cross the river from the touristy section to eat at Oscars! We were so happy we did. The west side of the river is the local side of the river, and there are neat shops, local restaurants, and NO crowds. Oscars is a tremendous fish restaurant (they have beef and vegetarian dishes, too), which relies on fresh catch, so the menu only has a few mainstays then many specials. We got the oysters (and found out Galway oysters are really briney. Interesting, but briney) and two local fishes: the sweaty Betty (terrible name, yummy fish) and the brill with cockles. Both were good, but the brill with cockles (and un-advertised mussels) was like getting two meals in one. Everything was perfectly prepared, local, and interesting. The service was friendly and excellent. We had no idea what to order (or even what some of the stuff on the special board was!) and the nice server helped us through and to decide on perfect meals. They also have a super-cheap prix fixe menu between 6-7pm. We didn't take advantage of it, but it was a good deal and a good way to try new things. One note: If you love good local beer, try the Galway Hooker or O'Hara's stout, here or anywhere. They are fabulous and a nice change from Guinness and Smithwicks. read more

We went to Oscars last night. When we walked in without a reservation on Thursday night we were a little surprised when told we would have to come back in a hour. Perhaps that was a good sign however. The menu outside looked interesting and they have a special Monday - Thursdays (and until 7 pm on Friday) so we decided to take a walk around and come back in the hour required. It was a good choice. When we returned we were seated promptly and given the "special" menu which was limited but had enough variation in choices. My husband had the starter vegetable soup and I had the leek and potato - both very yummy! We both decided on the fish which had a light white fish, mussels, shrimp - with a light, creamy sauce. It was lovely. Service was top notch too.....highly recommend!! read more

This was by far the best meal I have probably ever had. My friend and I are still talking about it! We had the fried squid and octopus first. She had the Aran cod and I had the mussels. A quaint little restaurant with great fresh fish. I got the red gurnard with a langostino. Never had the fish before but it was prepared perfectly. They focus on local foods and drink like the Galway gin and MacIvor cider. The mussels was big big portion. The Hake was the best. Definitely recommend it when in Galway. Oscars came highly rated but we were very disappointed. Simple plain room with staff who are pleasant but bored and not enthusiastic about there offerings . Starters of squid & octopus were too deep fat fried and oily and potted crab which was too much mayonaise with some crab hiding in there . Mains were mussels that were chewy , hake salad that was agricultural though the hake was cooked fine and chicken with cheese and prosciutto that was lacking in flavor . We were in Kirwan ''s last night and it was a cut above . Oscars is OK but does not deserve star billing. Price OK . read more

My boss has Micheal O'Meara's cookbook, and told me I had to come here for dinner while we visited Galway. Dinner was wonderful, and my husband who is not a fan of seafood and is allergic to shellfish, said it's his new favorite restaurant too. No matter what you order it's delicious. I had the prawns, followed by the blackened castletownbere cod, and we both had dessert. Our waiter was wonderful and his wine suggestions were spot on. Can't wait to go back!! read more

We loved this place. It was by far our favorite restaurant and food we had on our trip to Ireland. It is a hidden gem outside of the touristy area. We both had the fish specials. My fish special was very spicy and was balanced in a rice blend. My husband had mussels with fish that were flavored in a way like we have never tasted before. The mussels melted in your mouth. The banana dessert was amazing. I still think about it. Do yourself a favor and hit this place up for an amazing night of seafood. read more

This is a 5 star seafood place. Venue is plain. Prices for wine and fish are reasonable. Six(6) species of seafood on their catch of the day list! Plus two more on the printed menu. I loved my lemon sole with samphire, which I learned was like asparagus. Both were wonderful. My wife had cod with purslane, which we learned is like watercress. Loved the mixed green vegetable dish they served with our entrees. Friendly and knowledgeable service- patient and helpful. We've been to fancier seafood eateries, but never with such choice, executed flawlessly. read more

My husband and I were in Ireland on our honeymoon in February 2016, this place was one of our favorite dinners of the entire trip. Our waitress Siobhan went above and beyond. First class service for sure. We were having a hard time deciding between the Oyster appetizer they had as a special, and the raw oyster appetizer...she offered to do an order half and half so we could try both! Everything was so fresh and tasty and the service was exceptional. I know it may be difficult, but save room for dessert - it is fresh and amazing as well. It is a little bit pricy but worth every penny. The ambiance in the evening is lovely as well. Can't wait to make it back some day. read more

I had read some good reviews on this place and when it was confirmed by the lady at our B &B, we decided to go. We had no reservations (I suggest one) and initially the gentleman said they had no seating, but after my joking pouting and teasing, found a tiny table in the corner, which we were grateful for. The ambiance was very nice and romantic. The seafood roll, chowder, seafood sampler and Hake were AMAZING!!!! Everything was cooked fresh and tasted fresh. The service, although they were short handed, was amazing and friendly. They did have to turn a lot of people away, so we were just so happy to have been able to get a table. read more
