I didn't have a reservation but came right at 730 opening and the staff were able to fit me in provided I finished within 1 hour. I tried to paparadelle with rabbit ragu and the slow cooked veal with vegetables. While to food seemed well cooked both lacked flavor and seemed a bit bland in my opinion. I was hoping to try the Ossobuco, but it was not on the lunch Menu. I decided to go with a lighter fare, mix salad and the Milan mixed cold platter. Not my normal route, but I only had a day to eat through Milan. Simple but everything with executed well. Milan cold platter consisted of minced head cheese, cream-like fondue cheese, zucchini stuffedwith an onion jam, and select cured meat. Very local . I believe I was the only tourist. It's a "Slow Food" restaurant - with everything good that is implied therein. Impeccably sourced local ingredients, local cuisine done brilliantly, and inexpensive to boot (seriously - thats part of the "Slow Food" movement). The staff ("G" used to be around half the time, but has since retired, though the others are just as good!) mans the front of the house brilliantly, seemingly constantly on the move, but still attentive to everyone's needs. When in Milan! This is a quaint Osteria. A "Slow Food" restaurant. So 100% a place to take your time and enjoy your food! Do make a reservation in advance can get really busy real quick. First meal in Italy! And a mostly good one. We came here famished last night, and also severely jet lagged, so the quaint and unfussy atmosphere was a welcome balm. They sat us earlier than our reservation, and all the staff were kind and helpful. Is it "slow"? Sure, but not egregiously. We started with a bottle of fruity white wine as well as their goose breast salad and veal tonnato first courses. Both dishes were extraordinary. The crispy goose on the salad was basically like bacon--it was so greasy and salty and wonderfully crisp--paired with the quail eggs and mache (? or watercress?). The veal was also insane with the tuna sauce on it, and of course the accompanying bread was perfect. Our mains, we are sad to report, were nowhere near as good. The osso bucco was tough, and the sauce was bland--we were in shock to realize that we've had better versions of that dish in the States; the accompanying saffron risotto was fine. The biggest disappointment was the veggie entree course that had three components that had sounded so interesting on the menu but ended up being duds. None of them tasted very fresh--more like items that had been reheated and broiled up. The cabbage on the stuffed roll was a bit undercooked and one of the items had a sweetness to it that neither of us appreciated. Our kiddo got these milanese meatballs for her dinner that were interesting: kind of almost like a very finely ground meat situation that's fried. They were good. Fortunately dessert was back to being stellar. The triple chocolate cake was as good as it sounded and we loved the unique flavor of the white chocolate saffron ice cream with cacoa beans. That was definitely something special, so at least the meal ended on a high note. While our main dishes should have been the stars of the show, but clearly weren't, we did have such a lovely time as a family there, so we're landing on four stars. read more

This was by far the most disappointing meal I've ever had in Italy hands down! And we've been to many cities in Italy including Rome, Venice, Sorrento, Amalfi, Positano, Ravello, Naples, Como...in fact, all over the world. I can't believe Stanley Tucci recommended this restaurant where the traditional Veal ossobuco with Risotto Milanese style tasted like a tween under cooked an American style Kraft Mac n Cheese and threw in some Purina cat chow. The ossobucco they served was very dry and slightly cold in the middle as if the meat was taken from their refrigerator and slapped it onto the equally cold Mac n Cheese risotto. I couldn't believe this critically acclaimed restaurant could serve this trash. It was so bland yet there was no table salt offered. We also ordered the Milanese meatballs and Milanese snails. The meatballs were OK because you could tell they just refried it so the batter was crisp and hot, but again, the meat was very bland. The snails were lukewarm in temperature as if it was sitting in a pot all day waiting to be served. The sauce was drenched in their spinach mixture, and did I taste the iron! Our waiter recommended a bottle of local red wine to pair with our meal and once I sipped the red wine after the snails, I couldn't get rid of the metallic taste in my mouth even with the very dry and cold bread. Needless to say we didn't finish the risotto dish. You might wonder why didn't I send my dishes back to the kitchen. We had just landed that morning and I was so exhausted that I didn't have the energy to nor did I want to cause a scene. I just wanted to leave right away and considered ordering room service back at the hotel. I looked around and didn't understand why was the restaurant packed with locals by 8:00. Did they just treat American tourists poorly? How was this outrageously underwhelming meal attracting so many patrons? The venue's ambiance matched its dishes which was extremely bland and a bit run down. Its only saving grace was crisp white table linens. This was our first meal in Milan, a very anticipated trip we had reserved early this year. I regretted cancelling my food tour in Navigli Canal for this awful meal. It was a complete waste of our time, budget and appetite. Our 3 dishes plus wine cost my spouse and I EUR 99 which was not well spent. We returned to our 4-star hotel and had a therapy session with our concierge who shook his head and said he wouldn't have recommended there although he acknowledged the restaurant's positive ratings. After many way overpriced and sub-par meals during our short stay in Milan, we tried the L'Osteria del Treno and I cannot recommend it enough. We arrived at 9pm with no reservation and I was worried we would not be seated, but the owner was so friendly and insisted we stay. He recommended a white wine (Sotsere Bianco) that was crisp and grassy, it was a wonderful accompaniment to our meal. The fennel salad with citrus doesn't sound exciting but with the mild vinegarette and fresh ingredients, it was so flavorful and refreshing. We both ordered handmade tortelli that just melted in your mouth- mine with apples and cheese, my BF's with the butter, sage and rabbit liver. For dessert, the pistachio ice cream with chili pepper was fantastic- delicious with just touch of heat on the back of the tongue, but didn't compete with the flavors of the ice cream. All in all, I would highly recommend it, and remarkably, it was our cheapest meal at 60 euros including appetizers, entrees, wine and dessert. The Osteria is a quaint place, a classic of regional cuisine and local tradition. The decor is true to the name, it really feels like the dining area of a train station, with the liquor bar at the entrance and two trattoria-style rooms: wooden tables, dim lights, almost rustic feel. The opposite of a tourist trap, and that's good. Loved the menu: simple, daring and unique. Goose ham?!? Cabbage and sausage fettuccine? Sausage-stuffed chicken with confit? The selection is unique, every dish is well thought through, as if to highlight the heritage of a cuisine rooted in the connection with the land. They embrace the Slow Food movement and it shows. Personal favorite, the cheese platter. If you're a cheese cognoscenti, you'll find some local classics. If you're just happy to try whatever, regardless of what it is, then go for it, and leave the central piece dipped in oil for last, can't think of a better way to end an exquisite gastronomic journey. Waiters are friendly but they don't exactly bend over backwards to check if everything's alright or if you're finished or just waiting to order dessert. Slow food indeed. Well, who cares, really, as long as they provide good insights into the best food combinations or suggest the right wine pairing, that's all that matters. This is an amazing restaurant! Being raised Italian, I've had many great Italian meals and this is one of the best! The menu reflects Lombardy's history and celebrates a cuisine that has a strong Austrian influence which is coupled with great locally sourced ingredients. Therefore there was not a tomato based dish on the entire menu! We started with a mixed plate of cheese, pate and sausage, followed by vegetarian lasagna with talleggio cheese and spaghetti with duck ragout. Main dish was a Milanese speciality of rolled pork with cheese and ham on a bed of creamed potatoes. Topped off by Puff pastry with ricotta cheese and orange chantilly sauce. My dinner at l'Osteria del Treno was life-changing. It is true that the restaurant was hosting an event for Slow Food, the international organization of which it is a member, yet given that the chefs preparing the meal are regular employees, the food was likely representative of that served during normal business hours. As you pass through the door of the restaurant, you enter a foyer lined with dark wooden cabinets and black-and-white tiled floors that together make diners sentimental for another era. The dining room just beyond the entrance hall boasts a high ceiling, culminating in a (potentially fake) fresco in the center - a reminder that you are in Italy. The lighting is just dim enough that you do not feel as if you are straining your eyes to see your plate. Despite the fact that most Italians are hesitant to fuss with their tried and true recipes, the meal contained a few, subtle reinventions of classic preparations. The dinner began with a selection of four salumi, each of which was different and flavorful, and was augmented by the plate of slightly picked vegetables with which it was served. As a primi, we enjoyed obviously fresh tortelli, which is similar in size and composition to ravioli, with Vezzena cheese and apples. The following dish consisted of duck prepared in a way that I had never seen before: served on top of white polenta of optimal creaminess, the duck breast was encrusted in juniper. The meat, itself, was juicy and cut-with-a-fork tender, and continued to shine through the fragrant juniper. Although the addition of several whole peppercorns overwhelmed some bites, the dish was phenomenal. Consistent with its Slow Food roots, the Osteria subsequently served a plate of local cheeses, one of which was the only cheese in the world that was not produced with salt. Again, each possessed a distinct flavor profile, and was easily consumed without other accoutrements like bread - except perhaps the sweet and tart, jam-like mostarda that accompanied the dish. Finally, as if the four preceding courses were insufficient, a pistachio and peperoncino gelato was set in front of us in dainty, wine glasses. Half of the table had seconds. Of course, a white and red wine were served to keep pace with the meal. The first, a white, almost tasted of sage and had a smoky aftertaste. The only way in which we could describe the second, a red, was that it tasted like fire in a glass. Not only would they be delicious individually and separate from the meal, they mixed with and showcased all the flavors within the meal. Successful wine pairing is the acid test of a good restaurant, and l'Osteria del Treno suceeded. read more

Relaxed (plastic garden furniture in the outside part) and unassuming this place has great value, excellent quality food. The service was friendly and not pushy (sometimes it can feel like a waiter is trying to nudge up your bill by offering extras constantly) and my waiter happy to translate the menu.
