There's so much potential with this spot. Pricing is right and menu looks good ... but they can't even get the most important thing down - rice! They used mediocre sushi rice and don't season it with rice vinegar. When they served me the toro bowl, the rice was still hot that cooked some of the fish which was definitely no. And some rice wasn't even cooked all the way. The sashimi itself was pretty fresh and that was why I was kinda bummed they didn't get the rice right. Service is hit or miss as well. read more

For appetizers, we got the soy garlic edamame and karaage. It was a big bowl of edamame and very garlicky (yum!) I would not recommend the karaage though, the meat was juicy but it was battered like a fish taco We also got the Kraken, Balboa and Rincon rolls. The fish was fresh but none of the rolls were particular standouts to me. Out of the three, I liked the kraken the most. It was busy and we had to wait 20-25 mins but the service was quick after we were seated. This spot is located a bit out of the way, near the hotels, so there's not much else around, but at least there's a lot of parking. Wanted some sushi and this was close to where we were at the time. The reviews seemed good so we thought we would try it. They also had a patio and that worked since we had our pup with us. Our server was really sweet and attentive. We ordered a few rolls and the shrimp tempura. The tempura was good, though the batter was a bit different. It was more crispy than light. So again, not bad just different. We ordered three rolls: lemon cilantro, point break and west coast. All were good. The lemon cilantro was yummy but one slice didn't have any salmon on top. Not a huge deal but all pieces should have fish on it. The other two were good as well. I ordered the spicy seafood udon to go. I ate it later and it was yummy. Nice seafood in it and I asked for mild spice and it seemed they certainly tried. The sushi rolls were good but kind of average. The soup was good as I really like udon. The place was certainly busy and the prices were good. We would probably return if we were in the area. read more

The fish was fresh, flavorful, and everything was prepared perfectly. My daughter absolutely loves their gyoza. We also love their outdoor seating, it's comfortable, relaxing, and makes the dining experience even more enjoyable. Filthy. The floors, tables, menus, servers clothes, and every inch of the place has not been cleaned in a long time. Now let's talk about the food. We got 3 rolls and a few pieces of yellowtail nigiri. All rolls fell apart and were hard to eat and the fish tasted old. It was clear the fish was not fresh. When it comes to certain foods quality is not just part of the experience, it's actually required for proper food safety. Having the taste of old yellowtail and salmon is unacceptable in every way possible. I will never return and I really urge the owner to walk into his/her restaurant and really consider if they even should be opened until they get it together. If I could give this a 0/5 I would. it was a Friday night and I walked over from our hotel. I survey all the restaurants in the area and this was the busiest. As I was served, I soon realize why it was busy. The food was delicious. There was a very large variety and the service was excellent. Since I was only one I was seated at the bar and served promptly. At the bar it gave sports bar vibes because they were large screen TVs staring right in front of you. What was nice though is all the sushi chefs were also right in front of you making the dishes. Family and I were staying at one of the hotels nearby figured we'd stop by after a long day to get dinner. They've got a great promotion on kids meals $11 for teriyaki chicken, gyoza and edamame . For adults my wife, and I had the grilled salmon and Korean kalbi . Portions were OK, but I'm comparing this to places from nyc . Our server was pretty patient with my indecisiveness, but otherwise can't complain about the food. I also came back the second day for takeout and I would recommend not ordering the pokey bowls as it was just seaweed and some more pieces of fish . We love this place! To be honest--we mostly get take-out here (we do "sushi Sunday" in our house) but we have also dined in dozens of times. My kids love the California rolls, udon noddles, fried rice, and yakisoba noodles. It's a great place to try here in Point Loma and the vibe is not hectic at all when you pick up or dine in. I rarely write reviews for bad service, but I feel compelled to do so today. We have been coming here for the last couple years and have never been disappointed until today. It was lunch time and not super crowded. We waited 20 mins for a beer. We were told the kitchen was "totally backed up" and our ourder was coming soon. 45 mins later we finally got the order and had to leave and take it to go. There was never an apology, appetizer, ginger and wasabi, fresh water or even asked if we wanted another drink. The "to go" order was mediocre at best. We tried to cancel the order twice and we were told the food was on it's way. Probably not the servers fault, so I tipped them 20% anyway, but will never return. Ototo has been around for a long time and you know they are doing something right. The quality of the fish was amazing, and probably because they are so close to the water. And the price for everything was INSANE!!! The chef's choice nigiri was less than $40 and it was basically an omakase, which you normally pay around $90 for anywhere else. I really enjoyed the dynamite roll and the lemon roll as well. If you are looking for good fish and a quick dinner this is the spot. I would not suggest it for ambiance though. I almost don't want to write this in case it blows up their spot... But their happy hour is INCREDIBLE. 3-6pm EVERY day! And quality of food doesn't fit the killer deals. Like it's soooo good. Obsessed w the salmon kama for $5.50 (LS loc only on wknds, CM loc hit or miss throughout the wk!). Another thing that was a major green flag for me was their staff (both locations!) is always always so friendly, attentive, and seem happy! And both locations are very clean etc. Literally zero complaints except that I was sadly only introduced to this place early this year. But I've gone like 10+ times since. It's rare that I give a Japanese restaurant such a low rating since it's one of my favorite cuisines, but this was bound to happen eventually. After a long day, we selected Ototo for takeout since it was just a short walk from our hotel. On a Sunday around 4:00P, several other customers were grabbing takeout as well and the patio seemed popular as guests arrived for happy hour. + TEMPURA UDON ($14.50): A generous amount of noodles were cooked well and had that bouncy, chewy texture. It contained two pieces of tempura shrimp, some seaweed and one small fish cake. Given that this was mostly noodles, there wasn't much substance to this dish and the broth was pretty salty. + SUNSET ROLL ($13): Imitation crab and cucumber inside with tuna, avocado, sesame seeds and tataki garlic sauce. Per the menu, the tuna was supposed to be seared, but it didn't have any indication of even being singed by the torch. This was disappointing since the sear would have added an extra layer of flavor and honestly was why I was drawn to this roll in the first place. The tuna itself seemed fresh although the texture was unfortunately a bit chewy in some spots. Also, the menu stated the inside of the roll should contain gobo (burdock root), but that was missing as well. The tataki sauce had a strong ginger flavor, so I'm glad it came on the side in a cup. I'm not a huge ginger fan, so I didn't use much of it, but that all comes down to personal preference. One of my dinner companions ordered the POINT BREAK ROLL ($14) which was also supposed to have seared tuna, but she said it tasted completely raw. While the rolls were fine overall, it's tough to look past the fact that neither one fully aligned with their descriptions on the menu. Due to this, I probably would not come back again and for that reason... 2.25 stars. read more

My friend and I were in the mood for trying a new sushi restaurant. We went on yelp and found Ototo, saw some of the photos and I was convinced. When we entered, the place looked and smelled clean. There was a small crowd of people in there which is usually a good indicator that food is good. Miso soup was fire & so was the spicy garlic edamame, made us excited for our sushi. I don't like krab in my sushi rolls so I got the rincon roll which was perfect! The only thing I might as for next time is for thinly sliced. But flavors & freshness was there! I was soooo happy with the roll. The ikura nigiri was perfect, rice was slightly warm and salmon eggs were super fresh with made a great combination. My friend loved her Chuck roll, and the toro nigiri. The price for everything really blew me away. Will definitely be coming back soon thank you so much! read more

We used to come to this spot often when it was called 'Sushiya'. It was our all time favorite restaurant where we always looked forward to getting our favorites. I have been to this location as OTOTO SUSHI a handful of times before our recent last visit and were always very satisfied with the service and food. This time was just different and we were sadly disappointed by the food. The service was great, but the food was not. It just didn't taste the same and the quality is not as good. Items we got: 1. Agedashi Tofu- tofu is normally cooked longer, outside crispy but uber soft in the middle. Later on, the tofu turned into soft blobs. 3/5 2. Sunset roll- This over the years was the main reason why I would dine here.  The seared tuna on top with the garlic Tataki sauce was perfect. This time the rice was harder, the tuna pieces were not cut very well and long, hardly any searing and there was a drop of sauce. We had to flip over and inspect to see if there was any sauce at all.  The seasoning was way off and the roll was not good. Sadly disappointed since this roll used to be insanely tasty. 1/5 3. Chicken Karaage- This dish should be made with dark meat, but they use white meat. I have had this in the past here and it was not bad, but this time, it was too dry and overdone. I will not be getting this again if they continue to use white meat. 1/5 4. Salmon skin roll- My sister got this roll and she said it was fine. 5/5 5. Crunchy roll-  This roll was our favorite from this location, other places do the crunchy roll as well but it was the best here. This time, it tasted off, the seasoning was missing something and the rice was too hard. 3/5 6. Mr. Miyagi 2.0 roll- We decided to try this one out.  (top) seared salmon, avocado,  soy marinated jalapeño,creamy jalapeno sauce (inside) shrimp tempura, krab This one was pretty good, the soy marinated jalapeno was different and made this dish 4/5 I won't be heading here again for a while. The high ratings of this place completely fooled me and steered me wrong. The menu had the variety and types of items you'd see at the yummier and maybe more authentic places, so it seemed like a good option; didn't realize a place with hand rolls, agadashi tofu, curry, udon, etc. would have worse food than any thing at UTC mall or Whole Foods sushi. It's insane to me that this place was as busy as it was. Ramen was so flavorless and greasy; had an odd smell unlike any ramen we've ever tried. Tempura was decent (although sweet potato wasn't cooked enough), except the shrimp tempura had a totally different coating (thin with a small uniform crumb) than the veggies - does that mean shrimp was a store bought frozen tempura? Got 2 sushi rolls that tasted ok; but rice was gummy, construction was loose, cuts of every ingredient felt sloppy and not delicate. Fantastic restaurant within a short walking distance from our hotel, Homewood Suites at Liberty Station. We were given menus at the door and asked to take any seat we wanted. You can tell this place is super popular for takeout as there must've been a dozen or more orders queued up and ready to go. I had barely scooted my chair in and a nice young lady had ice water for my wife and I. The difficult part was now choosing from some really delicious sounding options from the menu...! Although I really wanted sushi, I was a little chilly and ordered Red Tonkatsu and we split a couple of appetizers. As the apps came out, I was impressed that they took the time to cook them right and as they were meant to be. For instance. A potsticker (Gyoza) is meant to be pan fried for a couple of minutes, then water poured into the pan and steamed for the rest of the time. Thus the brown bottom and soft steamed top. Most restaurants side on ease versus doing it correct and only offer "steamed" or "fried" aka deep fried. For the tempura shrimp, they are always epically better when not only dipped in tempura batter, but then rolled in panko and fried. This restaurant cares to cook things right and cares about the outcome. I will most definitely eat here again! Service and food were awesome! read more
