Went to the joint yesterday to enjoy their happy hour (which is EVERY DAY) and had a great experience. The sushi is always a 10/10, and so is their spicy edamame. We also ordered the miso maple Brussels sprouts and they were fantastic-- a little heavy on the sauce and took about 30 mins to come out, but still enjoyed them. Our server was kind and attentive. We loved sitting outside and enjoying the unique people watching that OB Newport Ave has to offer. The outdoor dining is great, and the indoor decor is gorgeous. Always clean, yummy, and decently easy parking for those who drive. The Joint is my #1 recommendation for their spicy edamame!

We were greeted with a warm Smile and seated immediately. It was happy hour (every day before 6) so we ordered a couple of drinks, two cheeseburgers and truffle fries plus a pork belly appetizer. My oh my. The food was great. The medium rare burgers were a cooled excellently and the pork belly was amazing. Everything was tasty and our service team was right on the spot when we needed them. A great place with a real retro vibe

I can't say enough about this OB gem! From the amazing food, service, management, and amazing fun atmosphere. It's welcoming to all and has such depth on the menu. I haven't ran into a dish I've not absolutely loved. You can come for some of the best sushi in San Diego, or have an amazing steak dinner and they'll deliver on excellence every time. Great happy hour too and a perfectly currated music collection that just gives great vibes. A short few blocks walk to the beach for an after dinner stroll. What more can you ask for? Treat yourself to a great experience and give this place a try. Cassidy is always hands on for management and he'll make sure you have an amazing experience. Wyatt & Justin will not only give you top notch service but are solid awesome people to interact with.

I remember when this cool corner spot was Happy Chef, you know, the Chinese takeout next door. I met up with one of my friends and the wait at where we planned to go was 20 minutes. We came up to the hostess and was seated at one of the outside picnic tables. Wyatt came out and introduced himself and took our drink order. The menu has a variety, much like Happy Chef back in the day. I decided to go Japanese. They were out of karaage, so I got a seaweed salad instead...perhaps the universe needed me to eat healthier. I ordered the Lemon Basil Salmon roll which was very good, and the Dr. Eel Good which was good too though I like more panko dusted all over. My only complaint was there was no wasabi or ginger on the plates. Daveed ordered the classic cheeseburger. Yes, they have some sandwiches for that finicky eater you might have. He said it was cooked perfectly and the fries were nice and crispy. They were out of Asahi, so I said a Sapporo would be fine. However, another beer had come out and I just took it. The staff is great! Friendly and attentive and just a really nice vibe. It has been a while since I've had dinner on Newport but it's great to know I have somewhere to come back to that is dog friendly. Cako also laid down which she only does when she's comfortable. Cako Approves!

love this neat little restaurant in the heart of OB. they have a great happy hour and service is really good too. i may have fumbled my wine glass onto the floor but they were so sweet in helping me get it cleaned up. they also have outside setting for a good people watch session 10 stars

The Joint is a quirky funky sushi and tapas place in OB. Quirky funky menu with a SoCal-esque fusion of sushi and tapas. It's evidient that this place is a converted bar but with the red painted walls, red curtains, crystal chandeliers, the place looks like a brothel. In a good way. There was some noisy folks at the bar cheering the Padres game on TV. The menu is huge! Lots of options to choose from. Truffle fries were excellent. Perhaps some of the best fries I've ever had. Perfectly cooked and a perfect amount of salt and truffle flavor. We ordered a second serving as the sushi was taking a while and it was gone in a minute! Pork belly appetizer was also delicious. Served with sliced pickled cucumbers that made a perfect pairing! Four sushi specialty rolls. The specialty rolls here are extra-special in their creativeness. Even for SoCal. Had a roll with green apple, cucumber, etc. We also ordered a few nigiri that were of very good quality and prepared in the traditional manner. Service was professional and friendly. The only slight room for improvement is that it took quite a while for the sushi to be served. But it was well worth waiting for. There is some paid public parking on the same block with The Joint as it's difficult to find street parking in OB. I'd give this place my highest recommendation!

Came to The Joint based on a recommendation from my cousin's friend, who said she comes here often. We arrived during Happy Hour, & the place was packed. I took that as a good sign. Nope... Our waiter was very friendly, & the tables were kept clean. So, a couple notes to start out in the positive. We ordered the Maple Miso Brussels Sprouts, the spicy salmon & salmon skin cut rolls, & the Mary Jane roll off the Happy Hour menu. Also ordered the Veggie Tempura. The Brussels came out first. They were more burnt than crispy fried & next to no flavor on them. My cousin's Salmon Skin roll came out next. The presentation looked pretty, but I'd never seen a salmon skin roll so doused in sauce before. She couldn't even finish it. Next was my kiddo's spicy salmon roll. Again, very soggy, but this time, the rice was also soggy. Honestly, my kiddo's roll looked more glazed than the Brussels. The Mary Jane arrived next. How on earth is the rice in a tempura roll soggy? This one was also covered in sauce. We genuinely couldn't taste any flavors in the rolls outside of the sauces, which was incredibly disappointing. The veggie tempura arrived last, 20 minutes after the first dish arrived. I am understanding when it comes to Happy Hour being a little slower, but we had nearly forgotten about it. I hoped something off the regular menu would be more palatable at this point. Wrong again. The tempura was heavy in some spots & light in others. We had an odd array of "veggies," including half a jalapeño, lotus roots, strips of onions, & shrimp. We left feeling hungry & unsatisfied. Speaking with a couple locals that same evening, we learned The Joint has apparently gone downhill as of late, which is disappointing, because I love being able to check out & recommend local spots to people. Unfortunately, I won't be putting this one on my "visit again" list.

Can't beat the joint for some delicious sushi and sake bombs. This spot is my go to in OB whenever I'm craving some sushi.

Erin was our server and she was so friendly and helpful. Very smiley!! Vibe is giving pirates of the Caribbean. Prohibition era mixed with dark Japanese wood. A drop of Great Gatsby. Am in confused? Yes. Did I like it? Yes. The best sushi in OB!!

    Jessica K.

Happy hour prices are solid!! The service was really good. We got oysters, salmon nigiri and albacore nigiri. All three dishes were delicious. Will be returning!

The best Rainbow Roll since they use real crab which is rare to find. All the other sushi I have tried are also good. They are on the higher price side for Ocean Beach but the great quality. The mini tacos are also my favorite along with the burgers and french fries.

    Judy K.

Enjoyed the casual atmosphere at this restaurant! The server was so nice even though she was busy. The food did arrive promptly and the sushi and tacos we ordered were yummy !

We came here for happy hour on a Sunday night. We got seated outside right away. The price is very reasonable for happy hour. The food and service were ok.

The general manager came over and chitchatted with our table. I was the one who called the meeting, I chose the place via Yelp reviews. However, when the GM found out it was all three of our first time he proceeded to hand out his card. The guy that met me there was handed one, then my son who lives in Irvine was handed one. However, when I reached my hand out, he hesitated. I told him we don't live together (speaking of my son who was sitting next to me) and he started to hand it to me, but then pulled it back. He informed me it's in case we come back... funny, our topic of conversation that day was how hard it was for women growing up in my era and working their way up the ladder... how times have changed. Upon leaving, my guest laughed and said his wife would've gone ballistic at how the only woman at the table was treated. The GM appeared to look like we were the same age. I was quite insulted by his behavior. I hope something can be learned for my honest review. I did get a card, but I don't think I'll be back.

I started with the London Dry G&T, which was excellent--cold, crisp, and exactly what a gin and tonic should be. We shared a dozen raw oysters. They were fresh and delicious, though a little on the petite side. No complaints, though--they disappeared quickly enough. Then came the bread and butter. I realize writing a paragraph about bread and butter makes me sound like I've completely lost perspective, but here we are. The bread was fantastic, and the butter should probably have its own fan club. The charred cauliflower was the sleeper hit of the meal. If someone had told me beforehand that I'd be thinking about a cauliflower dish days later, I would have laughed. It was outrageously good. We've practically built date nights around Himitsu ever since. While reservations are a must, they're absolutely worth planning ahead for. One of the things we love most is that every visit becomes a chance to try something new. We're adventurous eaters, so nothing on the menu is off-limits, and we've never left disappointed. On one memorable visit, we ordered the Daily Bento Box, the Tasha Roll, and the Himitsu Sumaki Roll. While the Sumaki Roll leaned more subtle in flavor, the quality of the fish spoke for itself. The Bento Box was a collection of beautifully prepared bites, fresh salads, and perfectly cooked fish that showcased the kitchen's attention to detail. Oddly enough, one of the biggest standouts that day was the rice. It had a wonderful texture, a natural off-white color, and tasted remarkably fresh--as though it came from a small producer who truly cares about quality. Whether that's true or not, I can't say, but it's those little details that make Himitsu feel special. The food is consistently exceptional, but the service deserves just as much praise. The staff is warm, attentive, and genuinely passionate about what they do. You can feel that this isn't just a job--it's a craft they take pride in sharing with every guest. Most recently, I brought my sisters here while they were visiting me in San Diego for a much-needed sister date. We ordered the Karaage Rice Bowl, the Himitsu Bowl, and the chef's recommended sushi (three pieces each). We were so excited to dig in that we forgot to take a picture until after we'd already eaten one piece--that probably tells you everything you need to know. The sushi was, without exaggeration, phenomenal. To quote one of my sisters: "Seriously... the best sushi I have ever had... ever." High praise from someone who's eaten plenty of sushi, and honestly, I couldn't disagree. After years of visits, Himitsu continues to deliver the same outstanding quality, creativity, and hospitality. Restaurants this consistently excellent are incredibly rare. Himitsu is an absolute gem, and every visit reminds us why we keep coming back. We already can't wait for our next culinary adventure.

On the wine front, Gata absolutely delivers. The wine list is thoughtfully curated, and it's the kind of place where one glass quickly turns into two because there are simply too many interesting options to pass up. Unfortunately, the food didn't come close to matching either the quality of the wine program or the price point. We ordered the deviled eggs, which turned out to be hard-boiled eggs sliced in half with a piece of ham placed on top. When you order deviled eggs, you generally expect, well... the eggs to actually be deviled. We mentioned our disappointment to the bartender, who was wonderful, engaging, and genuinely enjoyable to talk with. The explanation was that this is simply their interpretation of deviled eggs. Fair enough, but it wasn't an interpretation that worked for us. Ironically, the standout dish of the evening was the pigs in blankets, which is not a sentence I ever expected to write about an upscale wine bar. They were delicious, but they also raised the question of why the rest of the menu wasn't reaching the same level. Looking back, we realized we were the only people actually eating while everyone else was there for the wine. In hindsight, that should have been the clue. I only wish someone had mentioned that before we made the trip over expecting a tapas experience. Gata has so much potential. The atmosphere is lovely, the wine selection is excellent, and the staff were fantastic. If the small plates eventually rise to the level of the wine program, this place could be truly special. Until then, I'd absolutely recommend it for drinks, but probably not for dinner.

Our 20th wedding anniversary was spent at our true guilty pleasure: Dija Mara…read more We would have loved to get everything on the menu but honestly we get stuffed really quickly and tried to stick with the perfected dishes: Grilled Roti with Lamb Jus Curry Sea Bream Ceviche Actually we noticed the menu didn't mention "Sea Bream" anymore and just said "Local Ceviche". Did they change fish? Tasted the same basically. Still amazing as always. We also tried some new dishes: Beef Tartare Chicken Thigh Skewers Green Curry Mussels The Beef Tartare was just okay. It's the only dish I probably would not ever order again. It wasn't bad, but compared to every other banger on the menu, it's last. Something has to be last. The Chicken Thigh Skewers were AMAZING! OMG, so much flavor in the chicken but the sauce really drove it overboard. Wow. These are a must try, you won't regret it. And lastly, the Green Curry Mussels blew us away. I love mussels and always order it whenever I see it on a menu. We devoured all of the mussels (and added the $9 Roti) and even got a container to-go to save the broth, lol. Truly another banger from Dija Mara. I really appreciate that the menu changes periodically without removing the veteran dishes we continue to enjoy. Just want to mention something besides the culinary spectacles. Dija Mara's decor is every bit as memorable as its food. The artwork isn't an afterthought--it's part of the experience. The dining room manages to feel both trendy and intimate at the same time, while the graffiti-covered back wall adds a playful, street-art feel that contrasts beautifully with the polished food and cocktails. The result is a space that feels creative, unpretentious, and genuinely cool. The industrial concrete and reclaimed wood elements give it a modern edge, while the Indonesian-inspired art creates a sense of place that feels completely unique in North County. This is really our happy place and I hope it never changes.

What a disappointment. I had high expectations due to the Michelin bib Gourmand award, but the…read moreflavors fell extremely short. The restaurant was fairly empty although Resy wouldn't take reservations. Plenty of bar seating. The service was fair, not particularly warm or engaging, which was fine. The food was alluring and beautiful, but the flavors were salty, flat, and mushy. Starting with the Paloma, it was nothing special. Just something you could get with a well happy hour special. Serviceable but unremarkable. Very Instagrammable, however. The pork belly was nicely charred and had nice bite sized morsels on the skewer, good texture, but the sauce was very salty, almost bitter. Forced myself to eat the 2nd skewer, but could not push through the last 2. In contradistinction, the beef rendang was almost bland, like a microwaveable peanut butter Hormel beef stew, and the cardinal sin - the rice underneath was mushy. That was what sealed the nail on the coffin. Bland, albeit tender short rib, on top of smushy rice. Dead. I barely ate one of the 2 pieces of ribs and couldn't do more. The staff wanted to see if I wanted a take out container. When you see a customer that disengaged with the food, you'd better be wary. Being Asian, I don't like to waste food, but when it's so not good, I'd rather walk away and get something else than to finish a terrible meal. Many diners have a millennia of choices in this price point. Sadly, not sure how this restaurant got recognition because it's half as delicious as your typical neighborhood Thai restaurant. Banana Leaf at the Original farmers market in LA is better, though humble and homely. Just very disappointing. Hope it was an off night and that others have a better experience.

Update from my last review for this spooky-vibed establishment:…read more After asking a few questions to the GM: Jesse P, he proceeded to explain the dinner menu options, which led to a conversation about the speakeasy menu, which led him to give us a tour of the BEAUtiful hotel and the adjacent wedding venue and shared his vision with how he's pushing to expand the esque. That led me back here tonight to rate their craft cocktails, which honors even the spirits of Witherby. The takeaway? Before you start the party-ing down the block OR after and want to wind down in a velvety style, this is the perfect place to try something that will wake you, your soul, and leave you thinking: "Damn, is the next cocktail just as tasty?"

What a perfect place to stop for dinner before heading to the symphony! Our server was fantastic…read morethe whole night and was great about making sure service was on time for our plans. I really enjoyed the thoughtfulness. Everything about this place was great for us. I like that their menu is on the simpler side, especially the drinks. They added their own flare, but didn't go crazy like many places do nowadays. I had a simple Veranda Bell to start, which was lovely and refreshing. My guy got the Diablita, which was also very tasty and a great choice. For our meals, we got the Spanish Octopus and the Pork Shank. The octopus flavors were very enjoyable, especially the chimichurri. The popcorn was an interesting change, but I do think it would've been better without it since some pieces were very hard and took away from the overall dish. The pork shank was cooked perfectly and fell off the bone like butter. They gave a nice amount of polenta and mushrooms with the dish. I don't think they needed as much sauce as they put, but it didn't take away from the overall dish.
