After my…read moreparent left the hospital, Sem Haven Rehab center took great care getting them back up on their feet and walking again. It was determined that my parent was in the beginning stage of dementia, so we have decided to keep our parent there, so they are safe, properly medicated, and cared for. I believe the SEM community is suffering through COVID like most care centers across the US. I am happy they keep our family posted on the number of cases and are doing their best to stay fully staffed.

Unfortunately the staff is not fully vaccinated and Covid has run rampant among the staff. Which resulted in my sweet mother's death. Yes, the un vaccinated staff killed her. Mom had a will to live but Covid was too much. Also due to the Covid dancing among the staff they were severely short staffed. We pulled our mom out after realizing they had only 2 staff members on shift for 15? Memory care patients? Disgraceful. I hope on judgement day those unvaccinated staff members see who they killed, a sweet, kind, gentle, vaccinated woman who had more life left in her. You should all be ashamed.

My 95 year old mother who weighs 115 lbs was given 10 mg of Haldol/Haloperidol nightly for 10 of…read moreher 13 nights in her second stay at DaySpring in Fairborn, supposedly "for agitation". She was admitted on Wed 5/3/23 and the drug was started on Friday 5/5/23 without my (POA) knowledge or consent. Haldol is an antipsychotic drug typically used for patients with schizophrenia and carries an FDA black box label that its use for elderly with dementia increases the risk of death. Mom has never exhibited agitation. Our first care conference was on Monday 5/8/23 and NOTHING was mentioned about mom's agitation nor the drug being prescribed. It took me 2 days to calm down enough to call the. Dir of Nursing (DON). We played phone tag for days and even though I told her in a voice mail I was calling about the Haldol, when we finally connected she acted like she had no clue why I was calling. Mom's chart only reflected "for agitation" so she said she needed to talk to the Floor Nurse to do some research and would call me back in the afternoon. Instead she called my sister, stating I was calling with questions but my sister was listed as the primary contact. Yet, as health care Power of Attorney, I am the one that filled out all of the admission forms, including the DNR, for this stay and her previous one in January. She told my sister that mom was exhibiting behavior that we have never witnessed and is completely & totally out of character for mom. Neither one of us believe her, but I'm waiting to talk to the DON later today to hear it first hand. Here's the thing - even IF mom was exhibiting the behavior she described, we were never informed and never consented to the drug. And the dose is extreme for a woman her size. I had reservations after the first stay about sending mom back to DaySpring this time and I can tell you, we will NEVER use a CareSpring location anywhere ever again.

The rooms are very unclean and smell like Irvine, understaffed, soiled bedding, call buttons never work and parents have to wait 30 minutes for assistance when really needed. When I asked a caretaker when my Dad would fall how would they now to come in the room to help him! Answer: They wouldn't know to come in to help because the call buttons in the facility do not work. I guess that explains the staff screaming down the hallways. Due to the lack of care we have decided to look at other Senior Living options. This is very sad when you are trusting the facility meet your expectations after what bill of goods they sold us. My advise is if you really love someone then do not send them to Brookdale.
