What can I say? OTTO pizza has stolen my heart with its affordable and tasty slices of pizza. OTTO knows it's customer well, and makes these huge slices of great tasting pizzas for its customers. Mostly, BU students who are starving and have little money. At $3.50 per massive slice, you can spend less than $10 on a meal and stay full for a very long time. My favourite pizza there would have to be the bacon, mashed potato and scallion pizza. Who would have thought that adding mashed potatoes onto a pizza would work so well? If you're looking for a more classic flavour, I would recommend eating the pepperoni slice. It's just these massive slices of pepperoni laid out in abundance. Truly the worst service I have ever encountered. I am only writing this review because I have encountered really rude and subpar service at Otto not once, not twice, not three times, but FOUR TIMES. In a row. A week or so ago, I placed an order through UberEats at Otto Pizza at the BU campus. When my order came, it was missing one item, and so I called Otto and let them know. They gave me a $10 gift and tell me I can use it by telling the people at the counter my number. So far, so good - it happens. I go to the Otto near my place to use this $10 gift card (I confirmed I can use it at any location, in store or online). I ask for four sodas. It costs me $11.77. I tell the people at the counter my number and apparently there is no gift card. The guy at the counter apologizes and creates the gift card. Then they keep me waiting for a ridiculous amount of time. And then when I walk home I discover that they literally gave me the wrong flavor (I asked for lemon lime and got ginger brew). I walk back and return the sodas. The guy at the counter apologizes and refunds my gift card plus the extra $1.77 I paid, but the guy who gave me the sodas does not have the decency to even acknowledge his mistake. I go back another day to use my giftcard. I order a drink and do some woirk, and when I pay using my gift card I discover, yet again, that there is a snafu. There is only $1.77 on the gift card, not $11.77. The manager intervenes and adds the $10 on the gift card. Okay, strange that this place is so disorganized that it makes the same mistake the third time. I stop by this evening to get a soda, and ask for the lemon lime flavor. Once again, they try to hand me a ginger brew. I clarify that I want a lemon lime and I ask if it is possible to give me the soda in a cup. The guy at the counter (the same guy who gave me the sodas the first time) is incredibly rude. He tells me Otto has no lemon lime flavor and shoves the alcoholic drink menu in my face, telling me these are all the drinks they carry. I know for a fact that they do have that soda because I have had it there before multiple times. I also have carried out soda in a cup before. This guy clearly recognized me from the previous encounter and for whatever reason decided to be extremely rude. Is there any sort of management at this place? Several of my friends are working in management and service in the food industry and find this story completely bizarre. Especially at a place that charges as much for a freaking pizza as Otto. I like the food and drinks but the fact that I have had had bad experiences four times in a row has put me off ever coming back. In particular, I think that the guy at the counter who went out of his way to be especially rude to me needs to be pulled up by management. read more

Overall 3.5/5 if I could give half star ratings. Got a large mashed potato bacon pizza and large sausage, broccoli rabe, and red pepper flake pizza to split with friends. They were pretty good, but I wasn't WOW'ed by any means. Also, if I'm getting pizza at a sit down restaurant, I expect them to come out piping hot... like burn my tongue hot... but sadly ours did not. Thumbs down for that. Love Otto! The crispiness of the crust is so nice and really brings out all the inventive topping combinations. You can tell every pizza topping at Otto is INTENTIONAL, well-tested, and delicious. Fresh ingredients, thin and crispy crust, reasonable prices and friendly service. $3.50 per slice is not bad considering the size of the slice, the quality of ingredients and it's Brookline. I had the mashed potato, bacon and scallion slice, as well as the pepperoni and mushroom...and a chocolate chip cookie. All were delicious! I also found the staff to be friendly and accommodating. I ordered Otto on Sunday (delivery from Foodler) - I got the mushroom and cauliflower sandwich and added extra mushrooms, which I didn't get, and eggplant. The pizza was just awful, and even mediocre pizza to me is fine - I'll eat it. But this pizza was way under cooked and the eggplant was really gross (and I LOVE eggplant). And I ordered a drink, which the driver didn't have with him. When I asked Foodler for a refund, they gave me Foodler bucks, which was nice, but I wanted my money back. Unfortunately, it turns out Foodler contacted Otto about the refund and they refused to issue one. I would give this place only one star, but the driver was so nice and apologetic about forgetting the drink, so I had to give a star for that. Other than the nice driver, there really wasn't anything good about the experience. For $18 for a small pizza, I expected more than what I got. Obviously the managers' customer service skills are not great - I think a refund for a pizza I had to throw away because it was inedible isn't too much to ask. Otto feels differently. read more

Me and my daughter were staying at a bed and breakfast not far from this restaurant so we ordered a Gluten Free cheese pizza with roasted chicken as my daughter has celiacs. This was the best Gluten Free pizza I have ever tasted. The crust was crisp and delicious. The flavors of the pizza were in perfect balance. The staff were all wearing masks and the pizza was ready when they said it would be. I would definitely order from here again the next time we are in town. read more

Ordered the bruschetta with mozzarella for an app. It had a lot of dressing on it but was still divine as the plate went back empty with a bunch a dressing. That was the worst of the experience. Ordered two pizzas. One simple pepperoni. Standard pie. Great crust, good authentic tasting sauce. The other was a blue cheese, roasted pear, and arugula pizza. This pie was out of the park excellent flavors worked incredibly well together. All the pies are two sizes. We got the smaller and I probably could have eaten ya on my own it was that good. The Biff and I love this establishment's Harvard Sq. location, so naturally we were psyched that there was going to be a sit down style version closer to the Biff. What wasn't expected however was Rewind 15 minutes from the news on the cake was that our pizzas were 45 minutes late. Damn were we hungry. Awesome manager comes by without us complaining and comps us for 2 large pizzas (mashed potato scallion and pulled pork mango for those keeping count)! That's like 40 bucks worth of pizza! It was a cold, dark night, I had just got done wandering around downtown Boston and I was hungry, I wanted something simple and close by, thanks to Yelp reviews, I knew I could get slices of pizza from OTTO and take it back to my hotel. This was helpful, because it was a weekend and the place was packed! Thankfully, they had a few pizza options to choose from. I opted for two slices, one Margherita and one Mashed Potato, Bacon & Scallion. Price was fair for how big the slices were and for the quality of the pizza. They were packaged well so were at least still somewhat warm when I got back to my hotel. The Margeheria was good but not something I would necessarily rave about. The Mashed Potato one? Awesome, so unique and so flavorful with lots of toppings! Highly recommended if you love bacon! I wish I had stayed in Boston longer, I probably would have visited again - I know I definitely won't mind running into this business again in the future! read more

I have been to the one in Harvard Square a lot... mostly after 1:00 pm, rushing to get there before it closes. The one in Brookline is very elegant, hip, young. It is a fun vibe the minute you walk in, that if you weren't craving pizza before you came in, then you would definitely be craving it after. It has the coolest bar, that just looks like you could meet your future husband there, or a great spot for a "grouper" date. It has lots of good drafts to choose from, and every time I walk in for take-out, the atmosphere convinces me to stay for a drink. The sit down area is small, intimate, and looks like people come in for a pizza, and stay for hours. The decor is rustic, barn like, and comforting. The pizza selections are extraordinary. There are many different types, and although I have only tried a few, they certainly have the dough:toppings:sauce:cheese ratio down pretty good. They don't overdo the sauce or the cheese, and the crust is crisp. I would order just the crust if I could. They also have an unrealistic selection of slices. While the types tend to vary night by night, they typically have at least 8 different types of slices to choose from. It truly is by far, the best pizza place I have been to in Boston. read more

Finally tried Otto the other day with a friend, and was very pleased with the result! The owners have done a great job rehabbing the space formerly occupied by Friendly's, and the result is a bright and airy restaurant. We were seated right away, and then greeted by the manager. Everyone was friendly and eager to please. Our first wine selection was sold out, but our waitress presented us with a substitution. Most of the white bottles are $25... Which is fine, except that we later found the same bottle at TJ's for $5.99. But what are you going to do? We split a small salami, scallion and Tomato pizza and the Fennel and apple salad with buttermilk dressing. The pizza was great - perfect ratio of sauce to crust to toppings. The salad was just OK... The dressing was a little blah for my taste, but I'd be interested to try some of the other salads. This was the perfect amount of food for two girls with a healthy appetite. Word of warning: they do communal seating here, so if you have a small party it's likely that you'll be seated with others. There is also a somewhat creepy Ronald McDonald head suspended from one of the exposed beams.... Apparently this used to be a Mickey D's back In the day and the head is an homage to those roots and "taking down the fast food establishment" (per the manager)... All that's great but next time I visit I'll try to get a table out of Ronnie's eyeline. read more

What is it about Boston area pizza emporiums that is insistent on ruining a decent slice of pizza? First of all, who said thin crust is good? Secondly, if a crust is so thin that when you hold it up to your mouth it droops and calls out for a Viagra topping, it is not to be defined as thin, it should be simply called "flaccid." I suggest that Otto's offer that as topping as opposed the side dishes from a Thanksgiving dinner that they do offer. Next, the quality of pizza should always be first judged by eating it as pure: cheese and sauce. The sauce at Otto's is delicious, the cheese is so sparsely distributed that it is impossible to determine it's taste. One should have to dab the pizza before eating with napkins to soak up excessive cheese oil. Otto's doesn't offer QTips to soak up the non-existent oil from the near non-existent cheese. The pizza basically has so little cheese that when served it has large splotches of red sauce so that it looks as if it either has pepperoni or a skin disorder. It does not look like pizza worth paying $15 for. Now, please note that I gave Ott's two-stars which makes it better than the criminal Upper Crust which mistreats its employees and still makes lousy pizza. Or Pico's which is simply awful and not worthy of the attention of anyone who wants pizza. The best pizza in greater Boston remains either in New Haven or New York. read more

When I first planned to go to Otto in Coolidge Corner with a group of 6, we were told the wait would be close to an hour, and it was 8:30pm on a Friday night, so we ended up going elsewhere. The next time I went was with a smaller group and we wisely went on a Monday night- wasn't too crowded and we were seated within a few minutes. We ordered the Ricotta & Basil pie, and the Meatloaf/Mashed Potato/Herbs pie. Definitely a lot of pizza for the 3 of us, but the combinations were unique and we enjoyed it. The food took about 30 minutes to come out, and our server was very friendly and helpful. There are a few other combos I'd like to try, so..until next time!! read more

You might think some of the combinations don't go together but trust me, just pick one where you like most of the ingredients and order it the way it comes and you won't be disappointed. -Dates but not first dates. It's usually noisy, not in a bad way, but noisy, and the atmosphere is casual and clean. It's also right across the street from the Coolidge Corner Theatre, so that's a bonus Jonas. Also keep in mind if it gets busy they do table-sharing; they'll ask you if they can seat people next to you if you have empty seats at your table. I don't mind since it's a casual place and it seemed like you could say no, but like I said, not a choice pick for a first date or similarly sweaty-palm inducing event. -People who don't need leftovers. Your pizzas will arrive and you will think "Holy gosh! Me-oh-my, I could never finish all this! Sure am glad you're here to eat it with me, [friend and/or non-first date]!" But as you dig in you will find yourself staking out the remains of the pizza. How many slices have they taken? Next, they'll reach for that piece with the really big plop of melted ricotta that you've been guarding and you'll have to use all your years of training to stop from judo-chopping their arm away from the dwindling supply of pizza. Being a Coolidge Corner resident, when I saw ANOTHER pizza place opening (basically right across the street from Upper Crust no less), I was like "reeeeally?" Then I dropped in a late Friday night when I didn't have almost any other options. Totally dig it. It doesn't feel fast-foody like Naked Pizza and they don't scoff at my veganism like they have at Upper Crust. Great atmosphere, darker/dimmer environment, and good service. Our waitress even double checked on if there were any hidden non-vegan effects with the pizza like buttered crust or something- and nope! I got a summer special pizza with squash, zucchini and red sauce. The crust is thinner than the usual slice and fabulously fired in an oven (crust bubbles that are slightly charred.. so good). I chased the pizza with a pretty great glass of red wine and yep! Pleasant night. One of the first really swell Coolidge Corner dining experiences. I'll totally be back. read more

A friend and I were hungry around 4pm and decided to share a small pizza. The waiter recommended that we get either the butternut squash/ricotta/cranberry pizza or the scallion/potato/bacon pizza. One thing awesome about this place is that they offer a wide variety of unique pizza flavors--very vegetarian friendly! In the end we decided to get the potato pizza but switched out the bacon for sausage with no extra charge. The pizza was good but honestly I'm a bigger fan of the "normal" toppings--cheese, sausage, pepperoni, etc--is good enough for me. That being said, I still enjoyed this pizza but simply prefer to get back to the basics. I'm pretty amazed by all the cool options--cheese tortellini pizza?! Roasted chicken caramelized pear?! First let me say that I look forward to going back to Otto and posting a more positive review update once the staff gets settled in. I came here on their second night in Coolidge Corner. It seems like the staff wasn't ready to handle the uppity Brookline crowd who believe they're chosen and entitled. These guys are definitely not in chill Portland anymore. I looked around the room and saw a lot of unhappy people because of the long wait for food. I mean, the kitchen was really slow. Also, everything seemed very unorganized. Again, they just opened up so I'm sure they just have to work out the kinks but I wouldn't come in right away if you're in a rush They got the most important part right because the pizza was awesome. I recommend the bacon, mushroom and vidalia onion pizza. The decor was modern and fun and they had a nice little bar set up where you can get some good brews. ****3 1/2 Stars*** How times change after a year. Otto, which is in what used to be Friendlys (points to the Coolidge Corner folks who remember) is a trendy pizza place that started in Maine. Otto's makes NY style pizza: thin crust with a variety of different toppings and combinations. My boyfriend ordered the peperoni pizza and I ordered their Smashed Potato, Bacon and Scallion pizza. The waitress said it was one of their best sellers. Both pizzas were tasty; I personally thought the baked potato on pizza would be too much but it was actually really good. Otto's prices are decent too, as far as high end pizza goes. Why does Otto's get just 3 1/2 stars? We really wanted to split the pizzas in half and place different combinations on (like half pepperoni and half baked potato). Otto's apparently doesn't split the pizzas like that, which is fine but they didn't give us a reason why. I've done it at other places many times and it hasn't been an issue..... read more

Otto is a welcome addition to the neighborhood, and I'm pretty happy they've finally opened and hope they stick around for a long time. Hopefully they'll help kick out Upper Crust, who suck because of the way they treat their employees... Naked Pizza should stay though, they're great and aren't really direct competition IMO, standard vs. gourmet pizza and all. The boy and I stopped in for lunch today, and decided to sit at the large, dark wood bar (they also have a traditional dining room). The bartender was wicked friendly and helpful, and set us up with some drinks right away, Harpoon Rye IPA on tap for the boy, a refreshing and not-too-sweet lemonade for me. They have a small but interesting tap beer menu with comparable prices ($5), and I noticed they use the Harpoon growlers as their pitchers (no idea how much those go for). The atmosphere itself is very inviting, with exposed duct work on the ceilings and a semi-open kitchen, warm colors and dark wood, and upbeat but chill music. They don't do half-and-half pies ('integrity of the flavors' and all that) but they suggested getting 2 small pies which is only a dollar or two more than one large (~$22), so we went with that option. The pulled pork and mango (white pizza) was flavorful and unique, and the mashed potato (also a white) was perfectly seasoned and topped with delicious bacon and chock full of scallions. I'd come back here for both, but also saw a few more on the menu I'm also dying to try (update: tried the onion/apple/bacon pizza which was also awesome). The crust itself was excellent, it was thin but still had some body and chew and was cooked perfectly... I even ate my crusts, something I rarely do, which speaks highly of Otto IMO. Between two of us, we ate 7 slices, leaving almost a whole other small pie as leftovers, which we had anticipated and planned for anyways. I think a single small pie for 2 people would be just about right, and for those of you who just want a slice ($3.50), I'd plan on wanting 2-3 since the size is decent but the crust is on the thin side. First the Pizza. 8 out of 10. Not a top ten slice. In fact it is not the best slice on the street. Crust is good and fresh. Cheese is OK. Sauce was PLAIN PLAIN PLAIN. BORING. Tidbits: -The pizza is reasonably priced, with a medium pizza costing between $10-$13 & a large $15-$21. The exact price depends upon the amount of toppings on your pizza. -The dinner rush usually starts around 6pm, so if you are coming for dinner, try to arrive between 4:30-5:00pm to avoid long waits. -Tables are reserved for people who plan on ordering an entire pizza; if you only want a slice, you will be seated at the bar area. -Be adventurous & try some of the unique topping combinations. this place in one word. AMAZING. they have brought life back to the pizza world for me and I am not going back. Upper Crust is officially in my rear view mirror, HELLO OTTO. while we did have to wait about 25 mins for a table, it was well worth the wait. Originating from Maine, this place is hip and it's spin on pizza is great. The toppings are odd, but put together make for a mouth watering experience. I love thin crispy pizza and Otto gets it right everytime. by everytime, i mean all three of the pizza's we ordered were cooked perfectly. Some of the best pizza I have had in a long time. If you're a fan of thin crust, this is your place. Every pie I've sampled has been perfect, especially the potato bacon and scallion, the pulled pork (a good spicy kick, but nothing that will kill sensitive palates), and just about anything involving ricotta. Good experiences regarding service, especially when sitting at the bar. I find the staff attentive, knowledgeable and pleasant; couldn't ask for better. read more
