When I moved in nearby I was excited to try. Food was all awful and the woman was a total b***h. I ordered online, came in and immediately gave my name and she proceeded to ignore me, yelled at my roommate who came in with me (for the same order) what she was here for, (clearly walked in with me and was waiting slightly beside me) and gave me nasty looks when I said she was with me. She then proceeded to take her sweet a** time getting my order. No one was around and it was late and we came 15 minutes after ordering and it was done before we walked in so she was purposely acting ridiculous. I live right next to this place, like in the same building. You'll never catch me going back though. Mounds is like a 3 minute walk down the street and is infinitely better. The guy who runs it is an icon and the pizza and subs are (almost) always significantly higher quality and tastier than anything you could get here. I went here at 7:30 in the afternoon, I ordered fries, 2 empanadas and a small buffalo chicken pizza. I've never ordered a buffalo chicken pizza that comes with red tomato sauce which btw if u haven't had it makes you want to throw it up. The fries had no salt or flavor whatsoever. The only edible thing was the empanadas only reason it wasn't a one star. Service was mid. Don't recommend to anyone ever. read more

Everyone complains about the owner's attitude. She's from Chile and a long time Boston resident. Been serving the Mission Hill area for decades. The phone greeting is "Joseph's. What do you want? Okay is that all? " Click. Four stools at a banquet in window. You're almost in the kitchen. You will not find a better empanada in the extended area. The spicy beef ones are to die for. The chicken ones are beautifully seasoned and moist. The Cheese ones and the buffalo chicken are not to my taste, one plain and the other a bottled spicy flavor. They have a magnificent dough machine up front by the counter. You can sometimes see it in action beating up the gluten and yeasty smell. Pizzas have the standard toppings and they sprinkle corn meal under crust to give it some air and height to brown. Very good crust better than many of the Greek pizza shops doughy style. It could use a touch more salt. Place is there to put out quality pizza and empanadas. I don't try the subs often but my pals love their steak and cheese. Try them. And laugh when you get hung up on. read more

After living in Boston for the last two years, I've been here countless times, most recently on a Tuesday night. Despite having a teeny space on the border of JP, Mission Hill, and Brookline, the owner has leveraged the space well - while I recommend take out for most cases, there is some cute counter seating that looks out the window on to South Huntington. The owner usually runs front of house, and while slightly curt at times, she epitomizes the "kind but not nice" aura of Boston. She's easy to talk to, and her son creates a lot of the art on sale in the shop. I almost hope none of it sells - it's so lovely to look at while enjoying a slice! And speaking of slices, the food here hasn't been a miss for me. I usually stick with a couple of cheese slices, and they're always piping hot. I've also had the eggplant parm sub, which is perhaps my favorite eggplant parm in Boston thus far (sorry, Parish Cafe! I'd recommend people come here instead!). Added bonus: It's open super late, unlike most other places in Boston. Strongly recommend. Worth your time to come to prep for tomorrow's hangover. Or just because. You won't regret it. read more

But while I waited I watched the main woman touch the iPad screen, her glasses 10 times all while making pizza dough. No hand washing, no gloves. Just a bunch or cross contamination. This place is pretty good for the price and convenience. When I first moved here I looked at the couple places within walking distance and this place came up and is open until 3AM. Perfect. I was missing my fish and chips from back home in Ca, so I ordered that. As I waited I saw people file in for their steak subs and the lady busily making them fresh on the grill. I realized I should have gone that way because the fish and chips were a bit soggy and not great. But I went back for a steak and peppers sub and I enjoyed it very much. Next time I went for a slice of pizza and it is generic but again, good for the price. The crust was nice and well done which I prefer. I find most hole in the walls here lack a bit of the friendliness as back home but the guy at the register is not rude and is efficient, so I appreciate that. Is this a gourmet spot,? I hated everything about living on the corner Huntington avenue and South Huntington. But this place when I discovered it made my year stay there bearable. Note its cash only, which is fine since the gas station across the street has an ATM. Their pizza was GREAT, especially their sauce, so I always asked for extra. Then I indulged in some of their other foods and they just kept impressing. BBQ chicken sub was epic, steak tips great, chicken/veal parm awesome. The only thing I did not like was their buffalo wings, mainly because I prefer them premarinated. GO there when your in the area. And when it is so small that only a handful of people can sit and wait on misplaced stools. And the line gets so long that it snakes out the doorway onto the sidewalk (and NO, it is not release day at the Apple store). And when the guy taking your order is tall, with a round belly under his plain T, has a gray pony tail and clearly doesn't give a f$&@, cause he's staring right through you like the only part of you that even exists is the sound escaping your lips that forms words that are items on his menu. Their cheese pizza was excellent but, what was to die for, was their beef empanadas - the spicy empanadas are hot! We were pleasantly surprised when we swung by the area recently that their empanadas remained as good as ever. read more

Admittedly, it has gotten better over the past several years, and they now take credit cards so I can only assume that things are on a positive upswing here. Kudos to them. This place was awful. Service was rude. ordered a Buffalo chicken sub with lettuce, tomato and ranch. Ended up with 2 "chicken" fingers (texture was like McDonalds chicken nuggets) that were previously frozen and barely warmed up in the fryer, NO Buffalo sauce, NO ranch, on a stale bun. Also ordered fries and they had no seasoning like the website said. They came straight from the freezer to the deep fryer. This food was horrendous and I somehow ended up paying $23. To wash it all down, I received a warm can of Diet Coke. I seriously would not recommend this place to anybody. Had a really bad stomach ache all day. read more

Was treated rudely, offered old ass pizza, asked for 1 slice, lady tries to start an arguement saying I asked for 2 plus the pizza makes direct contact with the counter every one puts there germs on and acts like it's nothing and proceeds to still try to offer it me me. Same shit as throwing the slice on the floor picking it up then saying "here you go sir" because you might of well have done that at that point.... You guys messed up a classic spot. I love pizza. Like, my last meal on death row would be pepperoni and extra cheese, thin crust from Lorenzo and Sons in Philly, love pizza. And let me tell you, Joseph's is damn good pizza. Let's go through the anatomy of a good slice: Cheese: If there's one knock on Joseph's pizza, it's that the cheese is cheap. Does it work well enough, yes; could it be better, yes. There isn't a ton of flavor in it, but it does the job. Sauce: Joseph's has a sweeter sauce (probably cheaper) than most other places, and I like that. Also, they use enough that you can actually taste it, unlike many places that barely use any. Crust: Joseph's gets this just right, and that's the important part. It's decidedly thin crust, but also soft and chewy. It's substantial enough that the toppings don't fall through, but thin enough that it's not like chewing a load of bread. Really this is the strength of the pizza, and what makes it so much different than most of the pizza in Boston. Lastly, the rest of the menu. Joseph's makes wonderful cheesesteaks, something else lots of places in Boston get wrong. The fries are standard fare, nothing to write home about, but the subs are good. At this price, believe me, Joseph's is a steal. And they're open until 3 a.m., so happy midnight munchies. Now if only they delivered... read more
