I have to say, after my first review about four months ago, this place has definitely changed. I'm not sure if it's under new management, new staff, or a different cook, but things are not the same. The once generous portions have shrunk down to something similar to Chipotle-sized servings. The staff, who used to be delightful, now seem less friendly, and the food just doesn't have the same flavor. Last week, I called to place an order, and they were out of rice. A few days later, I tried again, and when I picked up my food, I noticed the portion size had significantly decreased. Today, I tried to place an order at 7:30 pm for pickup at 8:30 pm, well within their posted store hours of 9:00 pm. The gentleman on the phone informed me that they couldn't prepare my order because they close at 8:20 pm. When I mentioned that their posted closing time was 9:00 pm, he explained that although they close at 9:00 pm, the kitchen shuts down by 8:30 pm, and I needed to pick up my food before then. I had already requested my order at 7:30 pm, well within their timeline, so this was frustrating. Unfortunately, I'll be taking my business back to Kabob Corner in Fredericksburg or Stafford. read more

I recently learned about Kabul on Facebook and having a fond affection for Middle Eastern food of all types, I stopped in to try their lunch buffet. They have their lunch buffet on weekdays, which is great, as most places only seem to do this on weekends. First impression when walking in was it was a converted Ruby Tuesday, but WOW, they did an EXCELLENT job from replacing the entire ceiling, flooring, tables/booths and even the window shades, to fully updating the restroom too, they clearly dumped a lot of money and effort into this place and it shows! The buffet looks beautiful, not grimey and messy, rather all food items are in clamshell heated servers, which kept the food fresh and piping hot. The offering was excellent, with a plain rice and a more elaborate rice, called Palau. The Qaubili Palau was incredible! Loaded with fresh ingredients and made with an outstanding quality basmati! The lamb that was in it was super tender and not gamey at all, rather perfectly seasoned and sooo very tasty! They also offered a more plain rice, which was slightly seasoned and also very good! Another fav of mine were their meatballs... they tasted like a mild lamb and were just as tender as that too (not sure if they're lamb tho). Flavor of the curry they were in was excellent! Their chick peas and subzi (spinach) were excellent alternatives for those not wanting meat... I definitely enjoyed a few servings of these!! Chicken kabob was beautiful in color and nicely flavored with a tenderness that was spot-on. Service was friendly and they even sincerely cared how the food was, by asking. We visited on a Thursday afternoon after 3pm, shortly after the buffet ended. Oddly enough, we were the only two guest (surely doesn't look like it from the food we ordered... I know) but we love Afghan food! Overall, it was a pleasant dining experience. The family sampler consisted of many of our favorites: samosa, chicken/lamb/shami kabobs and more. The qabuli palaw was delicious and took me back to memories of time(s) spent in multiple towns southeast of Charikar in the Parwan Province. The restaurant is spacious, smelled fresh and clean. Although two small groups entered to dine in after we arrived, it appeared most of the patrons were picking up to go orders. This was a first, but definitely not the last visit to Kabul Restaurant & Cafe. Give them a try if you want a taste of authentic Afghan cuisine. read more

Kabul for the win tonight! First the transformation of the inside of the restaurant is beautiful creating awesome atmosphere. The service was top notch, very prompt and most importantly hospitable. We were given complimentary chicken soup which the whole table ( 10 of us ) all enjoyed. The portions were large and hearty. The lamb shank was amazing and the different kabobs were very tasteful. Everything was great from the sides to the bread. We were also given a traditional Afghanistan dessert to try and hot tea which completed these wonderful meal. Definitely will be back! read more

Kabul has become a staple place for my family to eat whenever we are driving from Norfolk to DC, or back, and without fail has been amazing every single time. We are Middle Eastern so tend to be extremely picky about our food, but they have exceeded all expectations. The food was flavorful, fresh, a good temperature, and was as described by their menu. Possibly most important, they have amazing value in their sampler/family plates. We are a family of 6 (2 adults, 2 teens, 2 toddlers) and usually have leftovers. We've been here 4 times in the past year and every time we are the only table, or there'll only be 2-3 other tables. However, the restaurant is still kept in tip top shape, everything inside is nicely put together, good decor, smell, etc. The owner is extremely kind, cares about the experience, and will help you in any way if you have a concern. I'm always searching for new establishments to satisfy my palate. So I took my wife and close friend this Kabul. As you walk in you will be amaze by the decor of the place. They still had a few minor touches that needed to be completed but at that time, they were only open for a week. The staff members were informative and friendly. It was a buffet when we went, everything was flavorful and delicious. But the best thing we had and watching other patrons, was the amazing black tea. They wouldn't reveal all of the ingredients but man I'm still thinking about that tea lol. read more

Rude service and stole $71.17. my husband ordered food online. We got a text saying it would be ready at 8:19pm. I went to the restaurant and tried to enter at 8:20pm. But the door was locked and a closed sign was up. Google had the close time as 9:30pm. I then called the restaurant. A man answered the phone and said they were closed. I explained that my husband had placed an order and that it had already been charged. He asked me what the order was but I didn't know exactly what was ordered. I stop at this restaurant several times a year when driving back and forth between north and south on I-95. The food is amazingly good and well-priced. I took my son last week, and he loved it as well. The chicken soup, pumpkin, bread, biryani, eggplant, rice, saffron tea, and lamb dishes are all outstanding. The flavors at Kabul are reminiscent of those from the Mediterranean I grew up with. Similar dishes, not the same but with the same fresh ingredients and actually packed with flavor. Unlike the bland and tired fried foods offered elsewhere this restaurant is offering dishes more akin to homemade meals which is a genuine pleasure. I couldn't pronounce most of the menu, and had to ask for assistance in picking dishes out but thus far we are steadily going through the menu and hope to have sampled everything within the next few weeks. read more

Went in for lunch on a Wednesday. Peking lot was pretty empty for 1pm. Ok so there were 6 other cars . We walked in and were greeted by the host/waiter. We were led to a table handed menus and asked about drinks. We ordered those and reviewed the menu. Looking around I noticed there was only one other person. We decided to order the. Chefs Kebab platter. Our order was brought out roughly 15-20 minutes later. The disk consisted of 4 different kebabs with pickled onions and cucumbers on a 12" piece of tandoori bread with a side of jasmine rice. The kebabs were all excellent! The tandoori chicken breasts were moist and flavorful. The ground chicken kebab was nicely spiced and flavorful. Tbe ground beef and lamb kebabs were equally flavorful. The tandoori bread and rice rounded out a great meal. Sometimes you hate to inform others of great food finds, changes things sometimes. Very nice to have the whole place to ourselves. Took the Foodie Club I advise at the local community college in today for the lunch buffet to experience some Afghan culture & cuisine. Food was fresh, authentic, and delicious, reasonably priced and the staff that runs it was amazing as well! Very clean, modern, and bright interior with plenty of room. Perfect place to take a group for something different for lunch or to host an event. A great opportunity to talk to staff to learn a little about Afghanistan as well as see the great efforts of Afghanis to enrich and support our local communities and economy. We love Afghan food and were anxious to try this place. Unfortunately, we came at lunch - only the buffet was served. It was perfectly edible but dull. The food was basic, with no character, no spice, no interesting flavors. The buffet was not inexpensive. It was all-you-can-eat, but we were not inspired to have any second helpings. Went here late for dinner on our way through to South Carolina. The restaurant is very pretty and the staff changed the lighting to what we wanted. We ordered the chicken biryani and the lamb kabob. Both dishes were delightful and plentiful, so generous we took some home and were lucky to have a second meal which was even MORE delicious! The lamb was tender and grilled, the rice with the biryani was fragrant with a wonderful mix of spices. The bread was so good, fluffy and lighter than the usual nan. The staff did everything to make us comfortable and answered all our questions about the food. I had a refreshing saffron, lemon and honey tea. The staff was so friendly and kind , went out of their way to accomodate us Highly recommended if you're looking for a new adventure in cuisine and an attentive staff.
