This is the grossest place I've ever eaten. The staff was unprofessional and rude the entire time. We were even given the wrong food, and instead of fixing it properly, they blamed us for their mistake. The meat definitely did not taste fresh, and the fries were completely soggy. Halal Munchies is my favorite place on Cary Street. All their food is bursting with flavors and BIG portions. There is street parking only. You can opt to pay to park or chance it. This place is so popular that there are usually cars in the middle of the street with their hazard lights on. When you go in, you can order the food through a touch-screen device. There are 2. You can also order at the register. Both work just fine. Their platter options are chicken, lamb, both chicken and lamb, fish or falafel. They come with basmati rice (seasoned or spicy), salad, fries and/or hummus. I've tried them all, but the fish hands down is my favorite. Then, you can choose a sauce: white, house, green or bbq. I've only tried the white sauce and it's the best. They also have other things to try, but I always see the platters as the popular choice. On this trip, I ordered 2 fish platters. Their fish is bomb. The crunchy batter and portions. There is a piece in every inch of that plate. They squeeze so much food in their to go box that it's amazing to watch. I've eaten there and taken it to go. There are only 3 or 4 tables and they play music. I keep coming back. There's a few tables inside to eat, but I wouldn't recommend coming here to dine in with a group bigger than 4, especially since it's on campus and there's a lot of college students coming in and out. Mimi ordered the combo with chicken and lamb over rice with fries and salad (DCG is a bit more seasoned but it's good here 3.4/5) and I of course got the fish over rice with double salad (10/5 lol). We could literally drink the white sauce, the green sauce was a good accompaniment and the hot sauce we got on the side which was spicy but a good heat. I wasn't a fan of the falafel which was a bit dry/tough to us (and we've had our share of some good ones) or the pita (bagged which was just ok). Fries are good too and ask for extra white sauce! This place (I think they've actually come here from New York) is reminiscent of all the best halal food trucks you've experienced, convenient platters with an option for salad (a nice and simple romaine blend), fries (not super crispy but good quality), and rice (brown, well cooked). All three in one plate is not uncommon, and all works very nicely together. I've gone for the lamb as well as the chicken-- usual options for red and white sauce, and there is also a bbq sauce if you're feeling a little different. Would recommend taking the food back to wherever with you. Tables in the restaurant are nice and clean but there are a lot of other places in the area to sit and eat. Monroe Park for example, and VCU is across the street. Everyone inside is super friendly, it feels like they're looking out for you and I've never seen the staff act abrupt or unkind to anyone. Eat here and support them. They regularly contribute portions of a day's earning to charitable causes and they're open late! This place deserves your business. Food came out so fast and fresh and the price point is unbeatable for the portions they give you. Lamb was juicy and accompanied the rice so well. I liked the mix of the crunchiness from the salad. The cucumber and hummas was pretty good together. I would not eat the hummas alone though. Finally got to try this place after waiting forever, a couple weeks ago. May I say, I it Is not to be missed! The shop itself is just a little more than a hole in the wall, but very clean and neat. The blend of aromatic spices, vegetables, and meats hit you full on and, if you weren't hungry before, you will be! They have a super easy ordering system or you can just tell the guys what you want. It's super laid back, casual, and they are very friendly and fast. In fact, I had stopped in one day before I actually ate there and one of the guys came out and answered all my questions and showed me how to order on their system. Now for the food...I ordered a combination order of chicken and lamb with rice, fries, and salad. I wasn't sure what sauce I would like so he put the green sauce and white sauce in separate containers in the bag for me. I wish I had just gotten the lamb, but I love lamb. The chicken was okay, but I would have preferred more heat (from spices). But the flavor of the lamb was excellent. So tender. The fries were nice and crispy. I put the green sauce r on the salad, which was a good choice because that sauce is like a vinaigrette with a lot of flavor. The two things I didn't care for were the rice (I got the spicy rice and, again, it could have been a lot hotter for my taste) & the white sauce. I thought it was just bland. All in all, I loved it and next time I plan to just get lamb, fries, and salad, and if I get the rice, I will probably get spicy again but with the red sauce, which I think they told me is the hottest of their sauces. Honestly though, you don't even need to order the rice. This would be a great meal with just lamb, fries, and salad. Unfortunately, I didn't take a picture because by the time I got home with my food I was so hungry I just dug in lol. Please give these great guys a try! In the notes on my order I specifically mention no onions. Upon delivery, I could smell the onions through the bag. I opened my food and wouldn't ya know, it was loaded with red onions. We placed an order for two chicken trays and one gyro tray on thursday night. My friends were ok they had the chicken trays and i had the gyro plate. When i arrived home and ate my food i initially felt ok until about 30 mins later when my stomach started to cramp up and i had the urge to have bowel movements. Long story short I was up all thoroughout the night constantly diarrhea & vomiting on and off. Among calling them they had nothing to say but " ok " offering no apologies, solutions, or refunds.
