This tour should be on everybody's New Orleans to do list! If you really what to know New Orleans, this is New Orleans from the inside out. Not the food or the booze or the dancing girls or the corruption. But the true heart and soul of a city that is sacred, and has had sacred history way before the white man ever set foot. Denise is a New Orleanian, born and raised in the heart of the city. My 3 friends and I spent 90 mins with Denise learning the fascinating history and stories that made us feel the true spirit of New Orleans that only an insider could feel and translate. The stories were deeply steeped in religious and spiritual tradition, from the days of the early explorers, yellow fever, slavery, Congo Square, Voodoo, and the Catholic Church. The story of Dolly Madison and how she stayed behind and saved the Declaration of Independence and other documents with the British on her tail, ( I did not know that! ) The Italians, all the famous musicians, to Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper filming easy rider, then poor Nicolas Cage. Denise tells her stories from a place of passion and humor. She covered so much in 90 min. never hesitating , with one interesting story after another. You could tell she really wanted to share as much as possible during our time together. Who knew a cemetery tour would be hilarious? Denise is a Creole native of New Orleans who talks a mile a minute; I didn't want to stop and take pictures for fear of missing one of her many factoids or jokes. She knows the cemetery workers, she knows relatives of the deceased, she knows who's buried in St. Louis 1 and St. Louis 2, and thensome. We learned how Nicolas Cage obtained his tomb, about the society tombs where community members are buried, and common New Orleans burial practices. Denise's knowledge of Catholicism, Voodoo, and New Orleans Creole culture - gained from both lived experience and research - are incomparable. She is charismatic, witty, approachable, and endlessly entertaining. I'm not into horror, ghost stories, or anything having to do with death, but Denise's cemetery tour gave me the historic, religious, racial, and socio-economic context to better understand New Orleans on my first visit. The tour lasted 90 minutes and cost $20, plus tip. Other tours charged $20 for a half-hour carriage ride and cursory overview of the city's history. Pack a poncho and wear shoes that you don't mind getting muddy. It was rainy the day I went and there were puddles everywhere. read more

Words cannot describe the tour Ms. Denise gave us! She is well versed in her knowledge of the city & is Truly passionate about it & its' culture (past, present & future.) I can wholeheartedly say that she made the tour interesting/intriguing. Not only was she familiar w/the history (for she's a native w/deep roots in NOLA,) but we ran into other locals & guides throughout the tour that knew her personally. Her stories, music & everything was so "edu-taining." I loved them ALL esp learning about Storyville. We passed other groups that were not enjoying their tours as much as us & said so! Ms. Denise made sure we had a safe secure way home & recommended a local eatery (Dizzy's) for lunch. She naturally did all of this while a student film maker from NYU was filming her! If you are looking for an authentic and energetic walking tour this is it. Denise is not just another tour guide who memorized factoids about New Orleans. She was born and raised there and is able to give you history, intertwined with her personal stories, and music. She will play jazz and Mardi Gras songs while dance along the way. You won't mind the heat or humidity because she keeps you engaged every minute of this 2 hour tour. My sister and I both agree that this was by far the best part of our trip. We actually felt bad for the folks we saw on other tours. Denise even recommended a nearby restaurant after the tour. We got to eat where the locals go - Little Dizzy's breakfast and buffet was a delicious end to our tour. Tips: Remember sunscreen, insect repellent, and pack a bag with hand towels and bottled water. For years my husband and I have wanted to visit Saint Louis Cemetery No.1. We went directly to the cemetery for the the tour and paid directly. When we met our guide Ms. Denise Augustine, we knew right from the beginning that we were not going to be disappointed. We learned history, culture and an amazing amount of history not just for the cemetery but for the history of New Orleans. The more information shared with us the more intrigued we become. You will not be bored or wish you would have done something else, Ms. Augustine is outstanding. Because of this information shared, I have now continued my research on New Orleans and cemeteries. We hope to return in a year and I so hope she will be my guide. She answered all questions we asked and did not at anytime ignore us. Going on a cemetery tour was number one on our to do list list while in New Orleans. The cemetery itself was absolutely magnificent, but having Denise as our tour guide added a whole other layer. Just from the way she delivered the information you could tell she was passionate and proud of her city. If you are a fan of American Horror Story Coven you will be able to see Marie Laveau's tomb and learn a lot more about her and Voodoo culture in New Orleans. Denise was our tour guide for our Saturday afternoon tour. She was so energetic and engaging I'd pay her to read a menu to me:) Even if you have no interest in cemeteries, she provides so much information and history about NOLA its the one tour you should do while visiting. I looked around and actually felt bad for the other tour groups who didn't get to experience her as their guide. Went with a few friends but will do it again next time I'm in town with my wife. Ms. Augustine was awesome. She was leaving for the day but since we just wanted to see one tombstone, she took the time to take us in on a brief tour of the one we wanted to see and showed us a couple of others as well. She was SO knowledgeable and gave us a lot of history on the cemetery, the area and even where the free cemeteries where we could walk through on our own. She was great!!! We met Denise at the Our Lady of Guadalupe Church and she told us about the peace garden and the church before taking us to the cemetery. Let me start off by saying I had no intentions on receiving any sort of tours this trip to NOLA. So I went to one of the many cemeteries in NOLA and was blessed to have Denise Augustine. Denise gave us a tour of the St. Louis Cemetery #1. She's a creole from New Orleans and is very entertaining. The cemetery is old and run down and beautiful. You have to take a tour to get into the cemetery now. you can find her behind the church most days, or give her a call.
