Coffee Shop No. 410 Outer Bean Kitty Hawk, NC September 5, 2024 If there is one thing I have learned over the last two in and a half years it's that a genuine smile and a warm greeting goes a really long way. It can transform an ordinary drink into something special. It makes the magic of coffee last throughout the entire day. I was immediately welcomed when I walked into the Outer Bean. Initially, I was bummed because cortados were not on the menu. I asked the barista if she would try to make one. She said sure. I gave her general directions and she walked to the espresso machine. A couple of minutes later she handed me a cup with two shots of espresso and a stainless steel pitcher with steamed milk. The barista said, "Why don't you add the milk in so you get it just the way you want." I thought this was a thoughtful gesture. I thanked her and made my cortado. We chatted a bit. It turned out she is Thai and my husband is Thai; and I love to talk about Thailand. I took a few pictures. We exchanged goodbyes and I exited the cafe with a genuine smile and a very positive impression of the Outer Bean. Smiles are free and they can elevate and/or improve any situation. Plus, folks always look better when they smile. I hope you make this world a better place by sharing your smile with someone today. I grabbed a coffee at Outer Bean after fishing in Kill Devil Hills. To be fully transparent, I did not order food or specialty coffee. The coffee was fine, but nothing spectacular. It got the job done as I enjoy one cup a day and was a bit behind schedule. The place is small, but perfect for a coffee shop where take out is mostly occurring. read more

Walking into the coffee shop I didn't get a warm and inviting feeling. The woman who is working almost seemed annoyed with our ordering. Our biggest issue is that my husband's coffee was almost completely coffee grounds. My husband ordered a coffee with a shot of espresso. There were so many coffee grounds that he couldn't finish the drink because he kept ingesting the grounds. In my vanilla latte, I watched her pump almost 6 pumps of vanilla into my coffee and that was the most I've ever seen There are so many incredible coffee shops in the area. I just don't think I would return to this one. read more

The woman taking orders was a little direct and possibly not super happy to be working, but the food and coffee was excellent. We had the açaí bowl and green bowl along with a coffee and lavender latte. The food was great: tasty, fresh, well prepared. Nice to eat such healthy food. Coffee was tasty. First time I try this coffee place everything was delicious we got the golden milk a fruit juice and regular coffee but the best was the salmon sandwich is out of this world great job the the lady that made the sandwiches she was a little faster then the one making the drinks but she seem new .. will come back again for sure! read more

I eat at a lot of local places and this is definitely one I would NOT come back to, I ended up throwing away half of my food, the panini tasted like Sams's club pizza (cheap and not good). My husband and I stopped in on our way into town for our OBX visit. Got there for a late lunch and there was only one other table dinning. I got the Vegan Panini with hummus and vegetables. I loved that there was a ton of veggies but thought the bread could have been larger; both my and my husband sandwich (BLT) were on basic store bought buns that were pressed. Our party of 3 (2 vegetarians and 1 vegan) absolutely loved our lunches here. The owner was friendly and accommodating and obviously puts time and intention into her recipes. We didn't feel like her veggie options were an afterthought, like they were most other places in the OBX. The basil pesto and sun-dried tomato pesto were stellar. The cashier was very confused when I ask what flavor of bagels they had for a breakfast sandwich, after a few minutes of back and forth she finally said "we only have plain bagels". They don't have sausage for their breakfast sandwiches. The bacon was microwaved, they put sliced hard boiled eggs and cheese on my sandwich, the menu isn't clear about their style of sandwich. In the end it wasn't bad, but I won't be returning. I got the tomato basil sandwich on a bagel and it was so delicious. Staff were so nice and considerate. They made sure I got a delicious meal! I originally was going to do a make your own sandwich and was basically ordering the tomato basil so the staff suggested that and it was so good! It was fresh and the mozzarella was delicious. The 5 stars is primarily for the service, not necessarily the coffee. The girl working was very nice. I ordered a mocha but had said I didn't want it super sweet, and an extra shot. She was very accommodating! Made it exactly how I wanted. Even labeled the two mocha so we wouldn't get confused about which one had the extra shot. Coffee was okay! I've been spoiled with phenomenal coffee back home and end up comparing all coffee to it, which doesn't seem fair lol It was strong! And just enough sweet. We were craving fresh juices and initially drove to the Duck location only to learn it's closed for the season (someone should probably tell Google and Yelp because we saw others walk up only to be disappointed, too). But we made the drive to Kitty Hawk and we're glad we did! We ordered Mean green and juices which hit the spot. We also ordered coffee drinks just to try their coffee and their beans have a very nice flavor. I also ordered the vegan salad which was very fresh and filling. I ordered it without the dressing just to be celiac safe. The next day we returned for more green juices. I also tried their acai bowl, which was passable. I ordered it without granola to make it gluten free. The base was missing the right texture. Perhaps it had too much banana and that made it liquify? Not sure but it was a soupy acai bowl. They topped it with pear, apple, blueberries, banana and dried coconut shavings which was not a good mix. If I had a craving for acai bowls, I'd probably make the drive to Island Smoothie in Corolla instead. But for everything else, this was fantastic. We are so happy to have found this cute little place! We like to patronize local establishments whenever possible. Since I am a vegetarian, I appreciate the emphasis on vegetarian/vegan choices, but there are meaty options, too. Not one to give 5 stars often, but the service we received here was too good to not acknowledge. The store is small... there are about 4 tables inside, and ~5 seats at the bar. Additional seating can be found outside. After we ordered the woman who I assume is the owner saw us standing waiting for our food and offered to make room for us since all the seats were full. She had little pop up stools in the corner and was able to fit us at the bar. It was a great contingency plan. Onto the food and coffee. Our order came out so quickly. You have a direct eye line into the process as the kitchen is right behind the bar. The staff moves so quickly and efficiently. It was really impressive to watch them work. My partner got the light roast (Guatemalan) and loved it. He also got the green grain bowl. The portion size was huge so he was unable to finish it but it was great -- full of granola/ sunflower seeds/ strawberries/ banana/ apples/ walnuts and other stuff. I ordered one of the specialty coffees, the snickers bar, which is a mocha with caramel and hazelnut. It was really good. Would certainly recommend. As for food, I got the vegan sandwich. The boiled egg concept simply does not work on a bagel stuck to too much flavorless cheese along with 3 small undercooked pieces of bacon. Ordered a chai latte and a mocha for takeout. The chai was sickeningly sweet and the cinnamon mocha was like brown water with no flavor.

Maybe the food here is pretty good, but we just ordered a cappuccino. Nah... that's not a cappuccino.
