This isn't your traditional Cabo style meal. It isn't street tacos or hot dogs or seafood cocktails. It isn't a wild bar scene. Outpost Cabo is a more modern, sophisticated Cabo, where farm-to-table is paramount, and every ingredient painstakingly curated with a specific purpose in mind. This is tapas taken to another level. From the moment I walked up to Outpost, everything was precisely executed to perfection.
Walking up to the restaurant with a general idea that I might want to eat there based on the limited number of online reviews (the restaurant has been open just a few months), I was greeted warmly and genuinely by Orlando who is just a fantastic gentleman. He took a few minutes to tell me about the history and the concept of the restaurant (I hadn't heard of Flora Farms), and then took me on a tour of the entire place, pointing out different dishes, drinks, and features along the way. I was briefed on the 'bathroom selfie station' where you can take and post a selfie in order to receive a free dessert. I was also shown one of the many seating options, the special chef's table, where you can sit adjacent to the kitchen and watch everything being prepared (and consume it a few seconds fresher). I was then given a complete rundown of the accompanying store where all-natural organic soaps, bug sprays, lotions, and oils are all for sale (the soaps all smell especially amazing).
After such a comprehensive tour, experiencing Orlando's passion, and getting to see all the cocktails and dishes that the diners were enjoying, there was no way I could walk away without trying it out for myself. There is indoor and outdoor seating available, so I chose a lounging chair outside where they have flames lit along the deck and a central tree runs up into the ceiling. To start off with I was brought a complimentary mini tuna taco. That's when the magic happened and I knew I'd made the right choice in visiting outpost. My mouth exploded with flavor, and it's incredible how such a small bite (about as big as the end of my thumb) packs such a magnificent combination of tastes.
Service was outstanding the entire night, with an attentive wait staff that made sure everyone was happy with their meals and drinks were replenished. I enjoy anything with fire, so the first plate I ordered was the 'Ham and Goat Cheese Bruschettas', which are torched with a flame right at the table to give it a melty, smoky taste which I had to resist the urge to scarf down so that I could savor the incredible flavors. I then took the advice of others and went for the 'Mango Tuna Tostaditas' which just might be my favorite dish of all that I tried. I could have eaten those all night! I then finished with the 'Tiny Octopus Tacos' which are not only ridiculously cute to look at, but also magnificently delicious to eat. After just three plates, I found myself satisfied, but still had to try the miniature smores for dessert!
Speaking of the drinks, each of these were phenomenal as well! I have to say that I'm a sucker for a drink with jalapeño in it, so the Ol' Verano was a personal favorite. I also tried the Farmarita (a great fresh brunch option!) and the Hibiscus Margarita recommended by Orlando. I love that all of these cocktails have truly unique elements to them that I haven't seen in cocktail lists at other restaurants or bars before.
If you're a lady, every night is lady's night from 7-11 pm which is an amazing deal. For each plate purchased (80-120 pesos), you receive 3 free drinks from the feminine favorites section of the cocktail menu (200 pesos each). So for just an 80 peso investment you're receiving 680 pesos worth of food and drink. Now that's a heck of a deal. And for the guys, while you can't participate in the cheap drinks yourself, it does mean that your date is going to be cheap!
I enjoyed my dinner so much, that I had to stop by for lunch the next day to try more! The addicting taste of the Tuna Taco sampler from the night before was still lingering on my tongue, so I started off my day with a plate of those - a winning start to any day. I also tried the 'Beef Tartare Tostaditas' and the 'Beef Gyosa' which were both wonderful. The only dish I didn't rave about was the 'Mini Prosciutto Sandwiches' - they were decent but not as amazing as the others. I got these dishes all as part of the special lunch promotion.
The number one rule of the lunch deal is not to talk about the lunch deal, but let's just say that it is pretty good too. (ok, I'll break the rule, and let you know that for just 100 pesos and the purchase of a cocktail you can receive 4 dishes included. For each additional cocktail you buy, you can get 4 more plates! But don't tell anyone I told you)
