well known in the area as the "sorta famous outpost". I gather it has been there in different and emerging forms since the early 1950's or before. It is an informal diner-restaurant with generous portions of consistently good food and wait staff who are friendly and personable. Eventually, as an adopted local, I will probably get a t-shirt. They say "cold food, lousy service..." or something to that effect, which appeals to desert rats. It certainly appeals to me. They could probably lose the constant fox-news playing on their screens, but at least they have the sense to turn the sound off so it's possible to just ignore it. I suppose it appeals to red-staters but that is not my hue actually. Politics aside, the place is highly recommended, and you can even dine under the portrait of the "world's most interesting man" from the beer commercial, which has an appeal all its own. Oh, and watch out for the truck traffic, and park in a sensible spot, which is not exactly intuitive. Once you have parked there a few times you might come to understand the inherent ambiguity. read more

I've driven past this place several times, dozens and always seen lots of cars there. So after about a year I stopped by and had breakfast. Food is great, prices are as well and the service is really good. Well worth the stop for a good breakfast. Outpost Café has become a regular stop on our Mammoth trips. The café is located right off the Highway 395 exit off Interstate 15. It is a truck stop but I don't usually see many truckers but most customers look like locals though. The service is always nice and the food is good. The boys always get their sliders. They don't look any different than any other slider but apparently they are yummy. Maybe next time I should ask for a bite. I've tried different breakfast items and they are always solid. Boys also get a kick out of reading the joke books and humorous stickers that they sell. You can also pickup an Outpost Café T or sweatshirt. Outpost Café is a great stop before you enter the long stretch of nothingness on your way to the Sierras. Don't forget to check-in and see if they're offering any specials. Traveling back to California, I had the opportunity to stop at the Outpost Cafe. I had driven by countless times in the past, always not the way somewhere else, but decided to try it for breakfast this time. I was greeted with a friendly "Hello" by one of the staff as I walked into the cafe. It is a truck stop style cafe where you are invited to seat yourself. It has that welcoming feeling with a promise of good food and a good time. The decor is that of an older, well frequented diner that is kept up and clean. Ignore the signs and staff t-shirts that proclaim "Hot Beer, Lousy Food, Bad Service, WELCOME, Have a good time". My experience was the opposite. They have a wide range of breakfast options, including your typical omelettes, huevos rancheros, breakfast sandwiches, pancakes, French toast, etc. as well as several local/regional takes on these standards. I opted for the Traveller's special, which included two eggs any style, an option of pancakes or French toast, and either bacon or sausage. I opted for the French toast and bacon, with eggs over easy. The food arrived pretty quickly and was good. It is not going to win a Michelin star, but it was good comfort food. While it was all warm, I would have preferred it to be a bit hotter. While it wasn't too busy, there were a fair number of people there and a steady stream of customers during my visit. If you're passing through, it is definitely worth considering this location for any meal. The service was very friendly, ambiance welcoming and the food was good. If i could give 0 stars i would , & it has nothing to do with their food . It has everything to do with the customer service . My mom and dad are REGULARS here on the weekends & for some reason its already been one too many times they have came in & they seat others who havent been waiting and just came in after them even after my parents have checked in and wait their turn patiently. There was this one time my parents went in were seated , they took forever to take their order & their order NEVER came , the womens excuse was that she forgot and that she could put it in if they wanted to (my parents had already been waiting an hour on their food so they were not going to waste their time waiting any longer & just went home to eat) Now on another occasion which is TODAY 9/18/2022 at 12 am, my parents , my sister and myself came in as per usual on the weekend checked in waited patiently until we noticed them seating others who had just came in AFTER us . My mom kindly approached the young women with green in her hair and white ear gauges and informed her that we had been waiting awhile already and that young lady decided to respond in a poor manner (not great customer service train your employees better) after hearing the tone and manner she responded to my mother in my mom just quietly put her hand up and said thank you anyway . We will NOT be giving this place our business any longer as we feel it is more of a racial matter more than anything. Once is a mistake , but 4 poor experiences with the workers is not a coincidence . Luckily my mother has raised us to respect others or else my sister & i would have not been as kind to this individual today. No excuses for the way my mom was treated and spoken to today . I hope this place isnt condoning this behavior and that it is just something they are not aware of that is going on. Either way its too late to fix whats been done , my parents do not wish to come here on their weekends any longer after coming here for 3+ years. Now another thing i see this racial complaint alot for this place & don't like the gaslighting responses given . Because the waiters and people on the floor and cashier are not hispanic . They are more than likely speaking about the cooks which nobody interacts with. So do better and stop giving the " we hire all races card" . I have been to this restaurant before. The last time I was there I had the meatloaf with garlic mashed potatoes and I had to return!!! I stopped in today for an early dinner. I was served by Rebecca, very friendly and helpful with the menu items. I ordered The Hangman Burger with provolone and American cheese, along with an order of onion rings. Sweet iced tea to wash it down. The sweet tea was on point, just right in the sweetness. When the burger and rings arrived, I had to take the picture and it's unfortunate that I can't share how good this food smelled! The burger patty was made from ground beef short ribs...MMMM! Placed on a toasted Brioche bun, with just the right amount of Chipotle mayonnaise, tomato, pickles, bacon and lettuce. The first bite was heaven - and the slight after bite tingling of the chipotle mayonnaise. The onion rings were served with a cup of ranch dressing for dipping, this was so delicious and thick that the onion rings were able to stand up in it!! The onion rings were thick and crunchy on the outside and just right in the texture on the inside. There are few more items on the menu that I will need to return for. Honestly I believe that everything on the menu is up to the standard of perfection!!! Unfortunately, I got full and didn't have room for desert, I'll have to start with desert next time!! I don't like leaving bad reviews and usually let it go. But I read the reviews of the Outpost and really wanted to like this place. We went at 10:00 AM on a Monday morning. It is safe to say the restaurant was not busy. We sat at a booth and the server came by a few minutes later and wiped the table with a wet towel. She then put down a fork, knife and spoon wrapped in a paper napkin. The napkins immediately soaked up the questionable water left on the table from the wet towel --- first impression was not good. It went downhill: - We got our coffee. It was weak and flavorless. - Even though the restaurant was not busy, It took 35 minutes to get our food. Plates came out one at a time over 5 minutes. - Omelet was undercooked and runny in the center. - Server did not offer coffee refills until the end of the meal when she brought the bill. - Service was not friendly or happy. Did not feel welcome or valued. Overall, this restaurant ranks with vast majority of truck stops offering a standard breakfast. Maybe this was a one-off bad day, but I have no reason to think the next visit might be better. read more
