Always enjoy the food here! On my most recent visit my server was Larissa and was super hospitable and helpful! We had two gluten allergies at the table and she made us feel taken care of and answered all our questions. My favorite dishes were the appetizers and sides, the equites, guacamole, queso, and refried beans were the best. I found the enchiladas to be a bit bland, but that was all I tried that I didn't care for.
After visiting the nearby National Museum of Art recently, we were famished and decided to enjoy an early dinner at Oyamel. Here's what I had: * warm, fresh tortilla chips + delish, smooth salsa (I would got back JUST for these, by the way.) * tacos = carnitas + pollo a la parilla * limonada [not pictured] = refreshing, especially on a scorching summer day Our waiter (Juan) was so helpful. We informed him of our food allergies and he was super attentive and cautious with the handling of our orders -- which is something we both appreciated immensely. I'd say our meal was fine, just Ok, nothing great but nothing terrible either. The menu is basically small plates, something we didn't realize until we went to order and the waiter informed us of that. Of the three things we ordered, the queso fundido was our favorite and it's arguably the least interesting thing one could order at a Mexican restaurant. Still we enjoyed it and finished the whole thing. The tamal was very tart and extremely oniony from the marinated onion garnish (can't remember what they called it). I didn't eat it with much of the onion fearing how that might come back to haunt me later. The enchilada was likewise ok, nothing great. In terms of ambiance we were seated at a two top that was a very small table with two uncomfortable plastic feeling chairs, squeezed in what should have been just an empty walkway between two rows of booths. It was very uncomfortable being in the way of the waitstaff and bus staff, and seemed highly questionable if it was up to fire code. Overall I think this is one of those places that takes itself a little too seriously and the food just isn't anything great.
This restaurant from Jose Andres was one of the better elevated Mexican restaurants at which I've eaten. I wasn't super starving so I had a fish taco and the enchiladas. The taco was amazing and was some kind of fried catfish! YUM! And the enchiladas were delicious as well. The green sauce cut through the overabundance of cheesy goodness quite well. I like that you can mix and match tacos so you're not stuck with all of the same one. The menu didn't have a ton of choices, which made deciding a bit easier. They had an amazing bar staff too that was absolutely killing it mixing cocktails. The margaritas were on point and the one had a flair of "salt air" foam instead of a messy, sticky rim. Who wants a messy sticky rim, right?
I was excited to try this after seeing it was a Jose Andres restaurant! There was a $25 special which included two appetizers and a taco, so I ended up getting the Camarones al Mojo, Frijoles, and Cochnita Pibil taco. I loved the shrimp! This was like a sweet garlic flavor and very generous amount. The Frijoles was like a bean and squash soup which I didn't love. For cocktails, I had the Daisy Margarita. The housemade grenadine was actually pomegranate syrup, and the salt air rolling was very unique!
Oyamel was an awesome vibe and even with great company, the small bites were enough and cocktails flowed to satisfy. Friday night we risked with no reservations and was able to snag a table. One glance at the bar it was elbow to elbow, so we dove right into our dinner. Service was quick and friendly. I chose two pescado Baja (Maryland catfish) tacos and one hongos en molito (wild mushrooms and peppers). Both were delicious and the flavors were nicely layered, however my hongos tacos fell apart on first bite. This was a bit saucy and probably better to get the sauce on the side. The chile de arbol in the pescado was so bold, mmm mmm. To compliment my dinner I chose the mezcal margarita and loved it. It hit that perfect sweet spot - bright citrus Magdala liqueur, followed by a gentle, smoky depth of mezcal that lingered just long enough. Onward to the bar to enjoy some after dinner cocktails and I chose the Estilo Ron Cooper. When I say Dua Lipa's "One Kiss" randomly played in my head as I sipped away, the flavors of this mezcal was fun and delicious. Time was fleeting but had it frozen, I may have tried a few more others and had the bartenders spin me something unique. Our bartenders for the night were very personable and engaging. I'm looking forward to coming back soon.
Fantastic food and margaritas! After or BEFORE checking out the National Gallery of Art, I HIGHLY recommend dropping by Oyamel for a Mexican flavor explosion in your mouth. The salsa is PERFECT! I'd suggest a Mezcal margarita to wash it down. I had 3 tacos: Nopal Asado, Pescado Baja California and the crunchy Chapulines (fried crickets). The latter might sound gross but trust me the flavor is excellent and it has lots of protein. I promise you it's not as gross as you might think. The service was perfect. Only when I needed them. Great place for a business lunch or a first date.
Boss pulled up and said "we're going to Oyamel" and that was the right call. Weekday lunch, Penn Quarter, reservation secured because this place does not slow down for anybody. Pitcher of margaritas for the table: smooth, rich, not too strong. Exactly what a group lunch needs without turning into a whole situation. The guacamole is terrific and they'll adjust the spice level to your liking, which is a small thing that goes a long way when you're feeding a whole office with different tolerances. The tacos are built on house-made masa tortillas and you can taste that they care. I did the Pollo à la Parrilla and the Chilito de Res. Both landed. The beef especially, slow-braised and seasoned like they meant it. This is a José Andrés restaurant, so you already know the room has energy. If you're in the District and haven't made this a regular stop, fix that.
I was in DC with my friend to see Romeo and Prince Royce at Cap 1 arena. Since we all know that the food there is expensive and not appetizing.. We picked Oyamel which is another restaurant by Jose Andres. Since I'm a fan of Jaleo I knew that I would be in good hands. The menu is crafted to small plates. I picked taco de Lengua (beef tongue) And chicharonnes quesadillas. Both plates were delicious. I had beef tongue tacos before but not like this. Meat was tender and savory. My quesadilla was delicious. The comp chips were good, but house salsa was served warm. It was good too but the house made guac IS A MUST!! Agua fresca de pineapple ... I'm be honest was a miss... for what they charge I expected better.. No garnishes.. completely watered down. . I don't recommend. The choco flan a miss..... very dry the chocolate part very dry and no flavor. Betty Crocker quality cake. The flan wasn't what expected .. very disappointed. Service was good but a lot of the menu items can be hit or miss.. it's like a 50 50 chance you might like.it or not.
Nice atmosphere. Great service. Delicious food and drinks. Got tacos (al pastor, fish, and carnitas in fresh blue corn tortillas), cheese enchiladas, and quesadilla. Drank mago and mezcal margaritas - all so good. Portions are small but correspond to the price of the items so you will want to get several times to eat. Chips and spicy salsa (first portion) are complimentary. Food came out quickly and we are able to scarf food down and order more pretty quickly. Would go again
A Michelin Bib Gourmand restaurant. Delicious and beautifully presented cuisine,and the butterfly-themed decor added a dreamy touch. Chips and Salsa: Absolutely amazing! Worth coming just for the complimentary tortilla chips. The corn flavor was incredibly rich, with a subtle undertone; the salsa was perfectly balanced between sour and spicy, with the garlic, onion, and cilantro adding a refreshing and pungent aroma. Everything was just right. Ceviche con Citricos: The dish I was most looking forward to, but it was only so-so. The sauce, made with citrus, pineapple habanero, and Fresno peppers, unsurprisingly had a refreshing and tangy flavor, but it was slightly too sweet and lacked spiciness, significantly diminishing its vibrant and stimulating effect; the bass was also bland in terms of oiliness and sweetness. Salmon would have made it much more delicious. Julienned jicama was sweet and crunchy, which was quite interesting. My friend and I initially thought they were pears. Taco de Lengua: My first time trying a beef tongue taco , and it was definitely the most interesting taco on the menu. The beef tongue was clean and odorless, stewed until tender and juicy, with a savory flavor similar to Chinese lo shui滷水. The salsa, white onion slices, and cilantro were fresh and crisp, creating a complicated texture. The tortilla was baked perfectly, not too dry, and had a good chew. Everything was right too. Quesadilla de Chicharrones: The pork belly was crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, with the fatty parts almost melting in your mouth. It had a rich smoky and marinated flavor, but it was a bit too salty for me. The salsa had melted, reducing its spiciness considerably; it was basically just tomato sauce. The cheese was rich and creamy, softening the flavors--the more the merrier! But that's where the problem lay; the cheese was visibly unevenly distributed. Huarache de Bistec: The bread was very hard and difficult to cut, but the simple, fresh corn aroma was irresistible; the flank steak was tender and savory, and the smoothness of the cream and sunny-side up egg contrasted beautifully with the refreshing salsa. Ladies and gentlemen, please add an egg! Tamarind Juice: Sweeter and lighter than regular tamarind juice. More suitable for a wider audience. The restaurant is very busy, so please make a reservation in advance. Also, since my friend paid the bill, and she went to the restroom while the waiter coming back for the tip and signing, I suggest that we wait for her return, but the waiter refused to wait and insisted that I sign on her behalf. Is this reasonable?
Trivia: What creature adorns a wall as well as evident in several mobiles? Fresh, house made guacamole. Highly worth it. Comes in mild, medium, or spicy. I definitely want to try the medium and spicy next time. The tortillas, as explained in the menu, are every bit unique and delicious. Service was great. Attentive and friendly. I'm a big fan of chips and salsa, and both are terrific. Slightly smoky and smooth.
We had been looking forward to our visit to Oyamel after all the hype about this place. While some of the food was great, the majority of it was more in just "okay" territory. I guess the delta between the high expectations and the average outcome is what brings me to a three star rating. We had reservations for 7pm on a Saturday. No doubt this is peak busy, but fortunately we were promptly seated at a table. The table we were sat at was pretty small considering the tapas style dishes I was expecting. The moment we were seated I was wondering where all the plates would land. To start I ordered a pineapple agua fresca. Folks, let me tell you, this was the most basic, blah agua fresca I had ever ordered. Other places will usually put muddled fruit or some sort of garnish. This was barebones in a small child's glass. That was rather disappointing. However, the chips and salsa were delicious and if I'm being honest, this was my favorite part of the meal. We started out with a fruit salad of "Gaspacho" estilo Morelia, which has chunks of pineapple, jimica root, cucumbers, queso fresco and some chile. This was a good dish and refreshing, but I wish the chunks of fruit would have been cut smaller to elevate the texture of the dish. Another appetizer we got was the Quesadilla Huitlaco which was tortillas with Monterrey Jack cheese, Mexican corn truffles, tomatoes and garlic. Honestly, this was like something my Tías would've made for me as an afternoon snack as a kid, so it didn't quite rise to the level of what I was expecting. I still don't know what corn truffles are because I couldn't find any. I think it's just corn. As our other dishes came out, we began to eat those and soon our table was full of plates which made it very awkward to maneuver around the table. We also ordered the Enchiladas de Queso, Tamal Verde and the Pulpo Negro. Only the Pulpo Negro was a 5-star dish. The others landed at a 2.5 to 3.5 territory. Last we had the Pastel de Tres Leches con Pina. It was about a 4 star dish, but seemed it could've been a bit more restrained in the overall sweetness. Throughout the meal, the noise level was high, but we knew this going in. It looked like maybe the did have some noise abatement panels but there should be more of an effort on this front to make it less boomy. Once thing I really did love about Oyamel was the decor. It was fun, artistic and had a definite point of view. I loved it, but wished the dishes as a whole were able to rise to that level. While a few of the meal components were excellent, the majority of the meal seemed average.
After a long morning of walking in the warm November sunshine, I was getting hungry and in need of some lunch. My friend said Jose Andres had a Mexican restaurant nearby, so of course I said yes. Upon entering it was quite busy on a Saturday afternoon but we were seated inside immediately. Our server was a bit slow to arrive but no matter, they brought complimentary chips&salsa - always the mark of a good Mexican restaurant. I told the server I was from Texas so my standards were high. He said dont worry you'll enjoy it. We started with the guacamole which was a bit too limey for my taste, but otherwise very good. Then for my main course I wanted tacos but couldn't eat the taco offerings. Enter the suadero plate: make your own brisket tacos. Exactly what I was looking for. I was surprised when the plate showed up to have sliced brisket and not shredded like traditional barbacoa, and a huge amount of avocado. Obviously this plate is meant to be shared - the whole concept of the restaurant - but my friend and I ordered different things. But regardless I put away 3 of these bad boys and most of the brisket. It was so tender and the onions and peppers made it taste like a brisket fajita. The tomatillo salsa was also very mild and complimented the meat very well. It came with blue corn tortillas which were great. Not much to complain about, a solid option for Mexican in DC! read more

The service here was amazing. The waiter was very knowledgeable of the menu and was able to provide good recommendations. The guacamole was amazing with the right amount of spice to it. I would of ordered more if I could lol. The Brussel sprouts were flavorful with just the right amount of crisp and the margaritas were made to perfection. My enchilada was disgusting and flavorless though. It tasted like dough and bland chicken with a sour sauce drizzled on it. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone and glad my gf and I went in restaurant week. The rib she got was also bland and we were surprised. What was flavorful was the shrimp, having that at the end of our experience was great along with the tres ledges cake. The atmosphere of the place is a cute date night and it was a little cramped in there but I think it was because of restaurant week. read more

Everything about this place was just right. After experiencing the worst food in DC. We experienced some of the best food, service and ambiance. As people with dietary restrictions the restaurant has an alternative menu that includes whether some dishes are for example gluten free, peanut free...etc. The server knew his way around the menu and was helpful in explaining the restaurants philosophy and recommending dishes that go together. The food was amazing; flavorful, authentic and delicious. If you are in DC and want a meal that will satisfy, you need to try them out. read more

The service at Oyamel was very friendly and the staff were very flexible about seating me and my friend at a different table when we wanted happy hour. Note that happy hour is only served at the bar and ceviche bar- you can't get it at the regular tables. The vibe of the restaurant is slightly darker, with trendy lighting and decor. They served salsa and tortilla chips for everyone for free. For happy hour, the mojito pitcher came in a carafe that was about 0.5L - so it was smaller than I personally expected. The ceviche that we ordered was tangy and delicious. The grasshopper tacos had a really unique texture that I enjoyed, but the tacos were overpoweringly salty and sour and they all tasted similar to me. It's a good place for date night but the food wasn't my favorite. read more

wake up folks the world of jose andres is being entered full force ... - I needed to try a real sit down Jose Andre's restaurant (huge shoutout beef steak, that place is phenomenal) so the ladies and I tackled oyamel - the Yelp reviews for this place are pretty mixed.... just like the reviews at my table - I personally was underwhelmed. the aesthetic of the place is lively and vibrant with such attention to detail, but my enchiladas de tinga poblana were just so average...no crazy flavor, no super special meat, sauce tasted like any old restaurant... - tacos and the octopus dish were praised, but $6 for a taco? since when is highway robbery legal? - the guac had a great presentation (wish they made it in front of us like I saw some ppl say they did) but also very average. the chips were bomb, idk what black stuff on them was but these were fresh hot and kept coming for free. great medium salsa paired. read more
I was very satisfied with everything we ordered. Right from the start, the hot tortilla chips and the fresh salsa were a perfect tentempié while we browsed the menu. We ordered the guacamole to start and it was perfectly dressed and went well with the salsa. We then ordered three tacos: the special barbacoa taco, the cochinita pibil, and the chilorio taco. Best taco: Chilorio de Res. Flavorful and tender. We ordered the tamal verde, softer than what I'm used to but absolutely delicious! The sauce was spicy and very slightly sweet. The ceviche verde at first was an interesting first bite, but again, the salsa was so refreshing and the fish was fresh. The service was too notch. Stephanie did everything to make us feel comfortable and satisfied. The only thing I did not enjoy were the two drinks we ordered. The Mexican Gin and Tonic and the Paloma. Both were more focused on the alcohol and had a slight twist of flavors. However, I usually like my cocktails to hide the alcohol, so that wasn't for me. The Gin and Tonic especially was unfavorable because of the small hibiscus flowers made it hard to drink. Big bill for two people, but we ate well and had a nice experience. First time coming here and it was amazing! The food was so good and I thought all of it tasted very fresh! The guacamole was made at a station so it wasn't sitting out or anything and was the perfect appetizer. My favorite was the cauliflower dish, oh my goodness it's a must! It has so much flavor and a bit of a kick. The tacos were also delicious but we also had a dish with made with octopus ink. I think it was such a cool first time having it, with a very unique smoky taste, but it almost made the meat taste sweet which was very yummy! We came here as a little date lunch and it was the perfect mix of energetic, fun, and laidback. The service, was 10/10. Our server was super helpful and was very nice to make suggestions. I had a friend visiting from out of town, and we went to the National Gallery on a Saturday morning and decided to get brunch here afterwards. It's in a great location and easily accessible from the National Gallery. The interior is very pretty, with a butterfly theme that I liked. They have a nice bar area at the center of the restaurant. We chose to sit outside since it was a warm fall day. It was definitely a popular place! I was glad we got there when we did (around noon), as it started to get busy. Their chips and salsa were very good, and they brought them as soon as we sat down. We ordered the guacamole, which is constantly being made inside. Delicious!!! I highly recommend it. We both had the tacos, rather than ordering off the brunch menu. I like that I had that option. Plus I thought the prices were pretty good, as you get two tacos. I had the carnitas tacos, and they were yummy. My friend had the fish tacos and said they were delicious, too. read more

Pretty mid food not gonna lie. Definitely won't be the best Mexican food you'll ever eat but it's a great casual restaurant. Service is great and for $6 per taco it's okay. You definitely won't be unhappy with the food and for a quick bite it's great. The pork could be more tender for sure but the watercress salad and tuna ceviche were a fantastic combo. Overall 8/10. Came to this restaurant due to a recommendation from a friend that had lived in D.C. Upon arrival, the staff was friendly and was able to accommodate 3 of us to one of their community tables. We were greeted by our server who explained the concept of the dining experience being traditional tapas that chef recommended the table share between 2-4 plates. We ordered the fortaleza flight which they were out of (there was a shortage). While this was a bummer, we were still able to enjoy the Rosè tequila and it's substitution. The flight was a great price - definitely worth it. The mojito was delicious and while the margarita was a classic - the 'Oyamel,' the salt foam was quite salty and even took away a bit from the drink itself since there was so much. Drinks were overall: 8/10. I especially enjoyed that our server explained each tasting item on the flight we were interested in. For food; the restaurant was able to accommodate one of my vegan friends with a more friendly menu. We then ordered a few items from the menu including the Frijoles refritos con queso, Pollo a la parilla tacos, camarones dish, and a variety of other items. Overall, I enjoyed the Refritos con queso and Camarones the most. Overall, the food was okay. I think some of the flavors didn't blend well in some dishes and even clashed or washed out some of the items. 6/10 for me. The ambience was great, with fun, beautiful traditional decor reminiscent of Mexican culture. The service was wonderful as they picked up each dish as we had finished them. Overall, I would come back for the drink options and for light tapas but this place didn't wow me. read more

When we first arrived they checked us in but then waited about a half hour for our reservation. I think they forgot about us to be honest so that was a little blip but the rest of the experience was great. The queso fundido was a favorite at the table - you just can't go wrong! The guac is freshly made there and delicious as well. I thoroughly enjoyed my pomegranate margarita but my friend got a coffee alcoholic drink that wasn't good at all. The way they're doing it is more sharing small plates rather than each person gets their own entree. The vibes in there are really fun and uplifting, definitely would recommend! read more

This place is all about small plates. We got a bunch of plates and appetizers, split everything, and were not disappointed. Some of my favorites were the fresh guacamole (with perfectly seasoned chips), pollo a la Parrilla taco, Ensalada de remolachas, and the Sikil P'aak. Phenomenal Mexican food with exquisite service! The food is wonderful. I loved the fish tacos and the homemade guacamole. My friend recommended the salt air margarita and it was the best margarita I've had in my life. I loved the amazing flavors of smooth tequila and the light frothy bubbles !! Truly amazing cocktails! Then we shared the tres leches dessert with caramel ice cream and strawberries. It was a sweet feast! The decorations of butterflies are gorgeous and the service was amazing. Truly a gastronomic delight!! We parked in a nearby garage and paid to park because my friend said it was more convenient. Worth everything to experience this gourmet meal!! read more

Nice ambiance, cute outdoor eating area on the sidewalk. Convenient location by the metro and quick service. Inside was a bit loud. Food was just okay though, not very flavorful. There were a variety of vegetarian options, but I thought the sweet potato black bean tamales was texturally boring and nothing exciting. The tortillas are a bit bland. Also it's tapas style so found it expensive for an underwhelming meal. Honestly would not go again. read more

I wish I could come here every day. Make sure to make a reservation...we went at brunch, luckily had a reservation because they were slammed! It's a tapas style place and we each got 2-3 plates to share. It was plenty. The drinks were strong and the service was great. The guacamole - there are no words. You need some. We had an early dinner before attending a performance at the Ford's Theater. We made reservations through Open Table and were immediately seated upon arrival. The service was great. Our server recommended several dishes that we loved. There were abundant vegan and vegetarian options. Chilorio de Res tacos were mouthwatering as were the Hongos en Milto ones. In fact, every dish we ordered was delicious. One dish (chilaquiles) never arrived from the kitchen but we were pressed for time so we opted to have it taken off our bill instead of waiting for them to prepare it separately. Dessert, Cafe de Olla, was phenomenal. Pics are only some of the items we tried. Great atmosphere for date night and a milestone birthday celebration. Highly recommend. read more
This place is amazing!! We got the guacamole, chips, and salsa, as well as multiple different tapas. The pomegranate margarita was really good. The chicken enchiladas and beef in mole sauce are both excellent, as well as the brussel sprouts and the chayote dish. We got 3 of the 4 desserts as well and they were amazing. The waiter was friendly and they were really good about taking the plates away as soon as we were done which was really helpful since we had so many different plates. The ambience was also pretty good. I liked the Mexican music they played, and all of the little skull people was really cute. Definitely check this place out if you like mexican. read more

I had been to Oyamel for brunch before which is amazing, but this was my first time here for dinner! Everyone here has always provided great service; always super generous with the complimentary chips and salsa too. It's a bit difficult to gauge the size of some of the dishes but they do explain that they're sort of like "medium sized" tapas.
