Something has changed at The Cup. I use to go there and enjoy the atmosphere and the staff. It was place to go to do some work while I enjoy their coffee and food. But now I find the experience un-joyable. It seems the place is more about the staff's enjoyment than the customer. They tend to blast the music, which makes it hard to concentrate and do work or enjoy simply being there, so lately I've been going to a different cafe. Also, the current staff seem more focused on their iPhones than the customers. This was both at the register where I waited for the attendee to finish her text, or after I placed an order and the staff around the food area was just looking at their phones. My food did finally come. I just felt the overall care for customer service has gone down hill. read more

The cup is a Boulder institution, and with good reason. The baristas are quite good, providing you with a good cup every time. The bites are good here too, great sandwiches and awesome brownies and such. This is also a great environment to get work done... the communal table a is a really nice feature if you are looking to chat it up with local folks. Plenty of areas to plug in your under-juiced laptop as well. As a Boulderite it's probably my favorite cafe, if not for the atmosphere for the quality of the food. read more

My very first time in this cafe. I greeted the girl at the cash register and received nothing but a blank stare. I didn't think she heard me so I said hello to her once more and got nothing but a stare. She didn't even acknowledge me!! I ordered my coffee and she was so rude and unwelcoming. This is a very cute coffee shop but the server was so rude I didn't feel comfortable here and I will not be returning. read more

I have gone to three different coffee places on Pearl St. and this has been my favorite! I've been in Boulder for just under two weeks and of the 10 days, I've gone to the cup 7 of them. Wonderful people, good espresso drinks and coffee. Chloe was also stellar and remembered who I was a week later without seeing me in between! Would HIGHLY recommend. I love the cup. It has the best coffee in boulder. I always get a 12oz americano and it is usually very very good. When Thai worked there, it was always great. In fact, better than most I've ever had. One small exception was Vivace in Seattle. The only thing giving them a 4 is that when Thai is not pulling, the quality is all over the place from ok to very good. At least it's never been bad. The food is always great. I love the jalhab (jalapeño habanero) cream cheese. So good. Sammiches, quiche, blueberry coffee cake, cookies, cup cakes, milk shakes, all excellent. Microwaved eggs taste good but not into the food discombobulator. For a cafe, it's the best in boulder and one of the better in the US. Funny, just read the other reviews, which are mostly great. Some complaints about price. I suppose if price is your thing, then go to mcdonalds. I don't mind paying a little more for organic, fair trade and superior taste. Not just a little better, a lot better. Plus americanos are cheaper than a lot of other places who's americanos are terrible. Cough, Vick's, cough. read more

The best coffee shop I've found in Boulder. It's a nice spot to relax with friends or get work done. The (vegan) deserts and the coffee are decent, and the baristas get the job done. The location is a bit off putting in a car or on a bike--parking/locking is tedious. It also gets very crowded around finals week. Still, it's a chill spot and the owners run it ethically. Decided to try a new coffee shop in Boulder and heard this one was pretty descent. And it is, the coffee is pretty good everything from a latte to iced coffee. Plus they have daily variations on their house coffee which is nice to see. I haven't eaten any of the food however there are plenty of options to try and the bagels always seem super popular. They are playing the Tour de France in the mornings which is a big plus for me and my husband, we go for a ride in the morning and stop here for coffee and watch the tour. It's always pretty busy but we have managed to get a table every time we have been, there is free wifi and lots of people working away in their laptops. The space could do with some sort of design but overall it's not bad. Definitely worth a visit if you are in town! read more

What you would expect for a coffee shop off of Pearl. Great quality coffee in a nice environment. The Americano's are solid and the food is tasty. Plenty of seating, and overall, a clean shop. That said, the service could improve. The quality of coffee easily warrants 4 stars, however, the employees come off as a bit pretentious and impatient with customers. The way the line naturally forms, for instance, is not (apparently) what the establishment prefers. So, the employees yell out line formation instructions every minute or two, and can get a bit "passionate" about it. This has happened every time I've visited. Seems like an easy fix... invest in more signage, or stanchions, or change the layout to accommodate what nearly every customer assumes is the flow. All that said, you should still check it out! Annoyances aside, the coffee and location makes it a worthwhile choice. read more

She is always awesome, smiles nice, is efficient with the order, a little chat when appropriate, but keeps the line movie and she might be the most beautiful woman on the planet, second ALL the people behind the counter are awesome. Third, the baked goods are INSANELY GOOD!!! As I used to live one block away, The Cup was my go to coffee fix. While it does get busy on weekends, the staff handles the crowds with humor and in a quick manor to get the lines down as quickly as possible. My go to drink is always the Bahkti Chai and they never skip out on latte art - even if I order it to go. This was the closest coffeehouse to my home until Atlas Purveyors moved in down the block. When I get clostrophobic in my home office, I start downtown and usually find myself walking into The Cup. The coffee is good, so is the food (if a bit pricey for coffeehouse fare). What usually gets me headed in the other direction, though, is the cramped seating seemingly designed with the intent of discouraging people from hanging out in front of their laptops all day. For the most part it doesn't work. The place is often crowded and stiflingly hot. Finally, while the folks behind the counter are courteous enough, there's an undeniable cliquishness to the place that includes both the staff and the regulars. It's off-putting enough that I increasingly find myself looking for a friendlier atmosphere. read more

I'm so neurotic I have an app that I use for rating coffeehouses to help me decide. And when my number-one priority is the quality of the coffee, the Cup is where I go. Even before I was consigned to a life without caffeine, I adored their decaf Sanitas blend. These people know their coffee better than they know their own siblings. And when did a sibling bring that much joy to your morning anyway? The baristas, on the other hand, are friendly and have a lot of character as well. In these penny-pinching times, I appreciate the Cup's refill jar - two measly quarters for another cup of coffee! Their red velvet cupcake beats Tee & Cake's every time, to the detriment of my waistline. And having a house account helps me budget my coffee intake AND get airline miles. In case I ever wanted to leave Boulder, which isn't often. If you can get to the primo couch spots across from the bakery counter, it's perfect on a rainy day. On sunny days, the outdoor tables and garage door that can be adjusted depending on the weather give you more options. The Cup only needs a couple of things to earn that fifth star. Banning smoking in the outdoor seating would let me inhale my coffee uninterrupted. And cutting down on the country and rap in favor of something less culturally obnoxious on the stereo would lift my spirits along with my Bhakti chai. read more

Awful service every single time you go in there they are the LEAST friendly people you will find on all of pearl st. I waited 20 minutes for a mocha milkshake and when it finally came out the girl with black curly hair said it was chocolate, when I said I ordered a mocha milkshake the girl barked at me "Oh it's probably mocha I don't really know I didn't really make it" and it ended up being chocolate. I've been a regular to this coffee shop over the last few weeks, came in tonight at 7:45 to find the door locked (they close at 10). Three employees lazily stared at me and my friends until one finally started walking to the door. I figured he's either opening it or coming out to say they close early, instead he just made sure the door was locked and then walked back. Great little place. Enjoyed an expresso milkshake that was just the right amount of creaminess and sweetness. Also had the turkey sandwich with brie and pesto, let me just say that I was sharing the sandwich for a light lunch and I'm glad I did; because the sandwich was anything but light. For a $10 sandwich it was very well worth it and portion wise it fed two of us. Most people here seemed to be busy on their computer but it felt comfortable to sit out on the sidewalk and just enjoy the nice weather. A place to definitely try and go back to. read more

I got the veggie sandwich... It was impossible to eat, I had to throw half out. With about an inch of cream cheese, veggies, and a toasted bagel there's nothing to hold the sand which from falling apart. Better off getting a sandwich and a salad. Parked in front of here a few times when I was in town so I gave it a try. Nice staff, nice clean decor. I ordered an iced latte and I'm pretty sure I got an iced coffee with milk shaken up. I'm torn. Their extensive menu of food, snacks, teas and obviously coffee is quite amazing! Everything on that chalkboard is great quality and mostly local! I have one major complaint though. Trying to order a drink the other day, it ended up being twice what the price was suppose to be and the lady told me it was because I didn't add milk to a Bhakti Chai and it's expensive. Ok, makes sense but it would have been nice to know before she charged me and started making my drink. She didn't stop there, though. She proceeded to tell me that the drink I was getting was too spicy and that I would hate it anyways. I let her know I'd had it before so it was fine, but she kept going and said, " How can you drink that!? Blechhh!" To me, that seemed quite rude when I'm the one ordering the drink. Waited a bit too long for our sandwiches, but the mocha was really good. Nice spot to people watch on Pearl St. Spinach Feta quiche was col, although they asked if I wanted it warm and I said yes. I think the sandwiches took too long, so quiche got cold. You can avoid that by making sure that they warm up your food just before the sandwiches are ready to be served. I also tasted the two sandwiches that we ordered, but I don't remember how they tasted. So not bad or not so memorable. read more

oh my god - one of the worst mochas i've ever had (got it last night friday 11/14/09) and I've been buying mochas in boulder for 15 years. And i will say i went to The Cup in once in the past and quite enjoyed my mocha. but whoever was the barista last night must've ground hi coffee with a chainsaw, tried to steam the milk by just blowing through a straw and while holding a match under the container, and used dishwater to pull my espressos. The mocha was terribly watery, it was totally flat, i.e. no foam (strangely, since i even heard/saw the barista steaming it, not that hard people), and not even topped off. For $5, $4 for the mocha and $1 tip for a minor amount of work, i really expect more. Barista should've stayed home with his Bob Marley tapes. i can pull a better espresso with my $5 thrift store bought espresso machine than the one i got last night. I honestly hate to be harsh and am really not the type of person to be uptiht about my coffee (I'm usually even happy with watered down gas station coffee), but seriously I'm pretty diusappointed at this 5 dollars i'll never get back and don't think I'll be going back to The Cup anytime soon - I'd rather spend my 5 bucks on another thrift-store espresso maker than give it to a barista who needs to be trained. oh, one other side comment: annoying that the cup cant just give out cards for frequent buyers. read more

I stopped here because I was waiting on someone and the cafe was right next to my parking spot in front of Pearl Street, so I will say they have a phenomenal location. The place was pretty full and busy but everything seemed to be moving fairly quickly. The interior is really well set up with a mixture of chairs and high tops, and outdoor tables as well. The guys behind the counter were nice. I ordered a standard medium latte, it really isn't much to brag about and was slightly overpriced for the quality. Generally, when the medium latte is over $4 (with tax) I expect something flavorful and nice to the last sip, this one was a bit bland and not necessarily bitter but had a bit of an odd taste to me for some reason. I had a coupon at home and didn't realize it until later, next time I will try another latte and bring the coupon. read more
