I'll start with the good. They had a bunch of wonderful options available for everything actually. Terrific variety down to some less found coffee drinks at coffee shops. They had 4 brewed options! I tried all of them and some were good, some were okay. Most coffee shops have 1-2 brews per day but I was swept away by having 4 options. Major points there. The bad. I wasn't overly excited by my customer service. I don't know if there was miscommunication with me simply asking for a cup of coffee, but I seemed to get a tiny bit of attitude from my barista. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt, but it made my experience a little uncomfortable. The coffee itself, better than Boxcar. I'm not too familiar with Conscious Coffee roasters but their product offers some nice flavors. I'd love to do more of a sampling and fine one that I love. That being said, I'm glad I decided to skip Boxcar for this place. Definitely a more enjoyable experience. read more

Quiet on a Sunday morning. First time in this location and I'm impressed! Ample seating, delicious coffee, and large windows toward the front of the shop which allow sunlight to filter in. $7 and change for a cappuccino and filter coffee is comparable, if not a bit less expensive than other cafes on Pearl. There's also a large seating area in the back of the ship as well, so I'll definitely be returning to study in the future! read more

The Cup is clean, dog friendly, and one of the less-expensive cafes in the area (a large- and I'm talkin' LARGE coffee is 2 bucks even, tax included). All of the coffee is fair trade and organic, and damn good too! The sliding glass storefront makes it airy and bright inside, and a great place to people watch. There is also a really tempting selection of pastries, cakes, fruit salads, and sandwiches that I've never tried, and the guys that work there are hot to boot. read more

Apparently I'm the most regular person at The Cup, according to Yelp anyway, so I suppose a review is in order. Especially as the Curtado is on the menu and spread around Boulder thanks to me popularizing it here at The Cup. I've been coming to The Cup for about 6 years. I don't live in Boulder much anymore, so it's even nicer to drop in when I can. And I keep coming back here because it's just the best damn coffee in all of Boulder. Many others try, and the Laughing Goat is a close second, and many new places have tried, but none have been able to take the crown of best of Boulder. And it's not just the coffee. The atmosphere is not pretentious like many others. There's no snobbery here, just amazing espresso. This is not a slice of Seattle, and be thankful for that. This is the child of Chris and Wendy Ball. A labor of love. The air conditioning in the summer sucks, the new awning only provides shade after 6:30 in the middle of summer, the wifi is terrible, but it's all worth it. College students can be found here, but not like at Starbucks. It's a mix of entrepreneurs, locals, espresso aficionados, and the college crowd. So come, relax, try to connect to the wifi, and try something new. You'll like it. read more

I have been here a couple of times to study, and I am fairly impressed. There is a large selection available for coffee lovers, and they also have some good ice cream options available. The atmosphere is average, however, and can occasionally be too loud, which isn't conducive to studying. This place does qualify as a decent location to just relax and meet up with friends. The instant I walked through the doors, I was a fan of the vibe. Chill music and the smell of fresh brewed coffee. I love the seating options.... a few tables outside, picnic style in the middle, cozy chairs by the barista bar, and a study/social room towards the back. The walls are adorned with art and the roll-up garage door at the front of the cafe is killer. Oh right, and then there's the coffee.... mom ordered a cappuccino and I orderd a vanilla latte. Great atmosphere filled with a bunch of locals conversing over a cup of coffee. We stopped in for short few minutes as we were walking around the Mall. I got a hot Dark roast which had an amazing flavor palette. Seems they change out roasts often which intrigues me and makes me want to try others. Very nice little coffee shop on the main mall in Boulder. We stopped in because we thought this would be better than hitting the Starbucks, and we were right. I always like it if there's a local coffee shop to patronize if we can. Anyway, The Cup was really nice and relaxed, with a cool interior and a very friendly vibe. It's totally the type of shop where you can swing in for a quick cup or come with your laptop or book and stay for awhile. We just ordered a couple of coffees to go and were unfortunately on our way to breakfast, so I did not partake in any of the pastries. But they looked absolutely delicious. The staff was very inviting and friendly, and they filled our order quickly and easily, even heeding my request for room for cream (half the time restaurants ignore me when I say this, pet peeve). I stopped by here a couple of Saturdays ago with my wife and her parents. We were in the area and looking for an afternoon pick me up whenever we saw the cup across the street. So we headed over and looked at the menu. The inside of The Cup is larger than it looks from the front with plenty of seating (both table and lounge type) in the front and then a quiet area with a cell phone phone booth in the back. Originally I was planning on getting a cold brew coffee but whenever I saw the $5 price tag (nitro) I decided to go with the affigato. If you don't know what an affigato is, it is gelato (or ice cream in this instance) in the bottom of a cup with a shot of espresso poured over it. This specific one actually ended up being quite good. The espresso was thick and rich and I loved the slight bitterness in the coffee flavor against the sweet and flavorful vanilla ice cream. Within no time at all I had made it through my drink and ice cream giving me that afternoon pick me up I had desired. The bottom line for me is that I would head back here again in the future. While I didn't like the price of the cold brew I was happy that it forced me into the affigato which I loved. read more

I will skip meals to make sure I have enough cash to grab a shot from ozo. The Sumatra and refisa are my favorites. So so good. All the baristas know what they're doing and every one is super friendly and not pretentious whatsoever-a problem that plagues the other great coffee shops in boulder. This place is usually cool but tonight there was crazy, loud, obnoxious, overwhelming heavy metal music playing. Hardly what I would expect to converse with my friends at a coffee shop or to study or work too. I'll come back one more time but if they are playing the heavy metal music again, it will be my last. Also, they place their laminated labels right on top of their baked goods so folks grubby fingers that are touching the plastic labels are contaminating the food and then the labels the food. Decent place I come in often. I own a small business on the Pearl St mall and I feel like we should support each other. Never had an issue with their quality and nice place to sit down for a bit..However, when standing in line today, I watched one of the Barista's have a temper tantrum with a customer in line. it appeared the customer grabbed an incorrect size cup, or something to that effect, and the employee went from zero to very rude in an instant. There are lots of eats in Boulder, but Yelp told me that The Cup was cheap. They weren't lying, and the website will attest to this fact. I ordered a feta, tomato, and spinach quiche. All of the quiches looked a bit sad in the window, but once it was warmed, it was delicious. Great middle of the day lunch/snack. There's also a lot of bagels and pastries and made to order sandwiches here, but I would stick to something small. The coffee may be cheap, but the food is where they make up their profits. Also ordered a Café Florentine. Made to perfection, and served up in a cute little cup. The Cup uses Fair Trade coffee, which just makes your heart jump, doesn't it? To be matched with the décor (pictures of human conditions around the world, which just fits the store. I'm not sure how to describe the pictures because I made it sound medieval harsh, but it's not. Just go look yourself). I sat in the front room because I did not know there was a back room until it was too late. I shared a long table with some dudes chatting on one end, and some guy who I think I pissed off by sitting across from him. So random dude, sorry if I infringed on your personal space. I doubt you are a Yelp user, but if you are, I really am sorry! Lots of sunshine and great coffee shop "vibe." Despite having to share a table, I really enjoyed myself. Upbeat spot for writing, getting some work done, or just to chill with friends. Get here early though, if you want a table in this snug, relaxed shop. And lastly, the staff is friendly and adorable. I was waiting at the counter for my quiche because they forgot to give it me and I thought it was still being heated. A guy who worked there finally asked me what I was waiting for, I told him, and he said next time I could just yell at him to get my stuff. We were treated super shitty here, because they have their own lingo of coffee drinks and we were first time customers... Strike 1. they use old, pre-pulled espresso for their cold espresso drinks. it was bitter and it tasted VERY watered down... Strike 2. The people behind the counter were having really unprofessional conversations, all while ignoring guests... strike 3. on the plus side, my affogato of freshly pulled espresso over ice cream was delicious enough to almost make me orgasm... I had to update my review, because I had the BEST scone I've ever had in my life at The Cup, and a week later, I'm still thinking of it. Seriously, and I love scones... But this was just incredible. I'm a big fan of savory scones. I think they blow fruit scones out of the water. The green chile & cheddar scone, as well as the goat cheese & thyme scones at The Cup are SO wonderful. I had one of each, and I seriously could have eaten a bunch of them (had to stop myself). I'm going to have to try and figure out the recipe so I can make them for myself here in San Diego... There really aren't any comfortable coffee shops in Boulder that are designed for two friends to have a long talk. Keep in mind, I'm comparing this to Seattle, where coffee shops abound. After walking in to, and out of five different cafes in search of the perfect spot to enjoy some chai and conversation, we ended up at The Cup (which was on the complete opposite end of Pearl from where we started.) The first thing I liked was that we entered from the garage door on the street. The second thing I liked was the menu of bagel options, which I wasn't in the mood for and didn't order, but appreciated anyway. The entire front room is full of tall tables and stools, and a giant tall communal table. This doesn't appear to be particularly comf for customers with children, since there isn't anything low-to-the-ground to sit on. There is an echoey back room that was full of people on their computers and wasn't an ideal setting for some serious gossip. The front half of The Cup is where the action is, and despite the awkward seating, it's where I would park myself for some serious Boulder-people watching and a yummy cup of spicy chai. read more

in 2012, I was in my senior year of high school at Boulder High. The first day of classes was uneventful, and theater hadn't started yet, so my friends and I found ourselves with an open afternoon. We made a solid group of four that I had formed in freshman year, one of our pack off to college, and many months of built-in arguments and compromises, arguments and compromises, for our friendship to stand upon. We wandered down lazily to The Cup, and sat in the open area on the pavement, cool breeze and shining sun, and we gossiped and complained without having much to complain or gossip about. We were lazy and luxurious, people watching and cooing at dogs that passed by, sipping our drinks. I can't remember which drinks we got, but I probably got a chai (3rd street) and Talia probably got an iced coffee (we were very into the TV show Weeds at the time, and Nancy Botwin's signature iced coffee was very much a look for her), Ryan probably also got a chai (Bhakti) and Ben was very likely to try out one of the more adventurous options, like an specialty mocha or a strange tea. I probably also got some food, a pastry or a quiche. Walking along Pearl street, our ceramics teacher passed by and said hello. We all greeted her warmly, petting her dog, and she took a long look at us. "Look at you all... high school seniors, enjoying your drinks in the sun, nothing to worry about...." She looked at us above her sunglasses, tone un-characteristically serious, yet not unkind: "Never forget this moment." read more

This has been my office for the day, and it's a pretty good place to work. They have great coffee (my bro says laughing cow trumps them, but i'll let you know if I agree tomorrow), good music is played throughout the day, and I think they do the best job of bringing the outside to the inside on all of Pearl Street. It's been a little warm in here today, but I heard people chatting that the ventilation isn't working, and it is, after all, a truly scorcher of a day outside. They do have a back room with lots of outlets and a cellphone booth to encourage people to stop yacking away in public. much appreciated. How much I wish this place was located near my office in Atlanta! The coffee was great, well priced, and plentiful. The food options were fantastic. All of those baked goodies looked too tempting, but not in that waxy--this-item-will-look-the-same-in-100-years sort of way. The music wasn't too loud and well selected (the did play the Pure Funk CD). The internet was fast, and so my Sunday was very productive. The cup is three blocks from my house and a busy busy studying coffee shop on the east end of pearl street. It is often very PACKED with people perched on high stools and the community table in front, and in the study lounge in back. The Wifi is decent but gets slow when the place is full of people. The barista staff are very nice and willing to customize coffee orders. They also have a delicious menu and baked goods selection with vegan, gluten-free options. Not every table has access to a plug, so if you plan to go be willing to hop tables as people leave or come fully charged. The coffee itself is pretty standard in Boulder, but Boulder has high standards. Yum! read more

This place is great and the options are vast. From the beverages to the food, I have yet to try more items than I can count on both hands, but the few I have, have been topnotch. The Cup offers daily variations in their coffees, stemming from South America throughout Africa, and boasts good relations with their roots. The walls lined with photos of rural coffee farmers help portray an understanding of where your drink really came from. I personally am a fan of their Espresso which is deliciously served with a little biscotti: powerfully flavorful and life giving. I had the chance to give their Nitro coffee a try (nitrogenated coffee, just like a nitro stout), which tasted awesome and was totally new to me. What really makes this place in my opinion, minus the energy of it all, is the food. The cup is far more than a coffee shop. While they work to maintain close relations with their Boulder agricultural suppliers, they maintain fair priced and amazingly tasty food. Their smoked salmon cheesecake -imagine a quiche consisting of smoked salmon, cream cheese, and capers. Their baked goods are always fresh, the banana bread slices for two dollars are a killer deal: they're massive and always moist. I've tried a few of the sandwiches, each of which has not let me down. I'm genuinely excited to plow gorge my way through the menu.
