Not stodgy and formal like other tasting rooms. We briefly met Brian on his way out and enjoyed the company of his wife Crissy as she poured. When you stop in, ask to see the impressive picture's of Pam and her big fish! Our wine flights were generous and snack plates were a delicious portion of cheese cubes, hard salami, and macadamia nuts. We finished our plates and wine and spent an additional hour mulling around the artisan gifts and art for purchase and sharing stories with other tasters. We appreciate the "Aloha" spirit we felt while visiting and would recommend to others who are looking for a laid back family atmosphere. P.S. we purchased a bottle of the Rose Wine 2024 and highly recommend it!

Freed Vineyard and Winery, OR - September 29, 2024…read more We arrived on a Sunday afternoon right about 1:30 as part of the Harvest Host program. We were met by wine host Karla. She told us where to park our RV down by the river (S. Umqua). The vineyard is a good size. We found a nice shady spot along the river, got set up, and walked back to the tasting room. Karla greeted us warmly when we arrived and offered us seating on their nice covered patio or indoors. It was a little breezy and coolish, so we opted for indoors. The indoor area has a nice bar as well several nice sized tables. There are lots of water color pictures on the wall and some other nice pieces of art. There is a Hawaiian theme reflecting the roots of the winery owners. Karla told us a little about the winery and poured us some nice wines.We had a rose, two Tempranillos (2019 and 2020), two Sarahs (2014 and 2020), and a red blend (Sarah, Cab. Sauvignon, Merlot). We met winery owner Pam, a very vibrant and kind hearted lady. We had some nice conversation together. We had a wonderful time and bought several bottles of tasty wine. Wine tasting fee is $12/person, waived with a two bottle purchase per person.

You have to go down the road a ways to find the gate in the fence to get in. But it's there. Trust me. Once you get there and meet Scott & Jennifer Henry, you'll want to stay a while. This is an outgoing couple that's passionate about their wines and about growing succulent house plants. They are very good at both. They have no vineyards of their own, but buy grapes from growers across Southern Oregon. They feel this arrangement allows them to get grapes from many different regional climates and greatly expands the variety they have to work with. And not tending a vineyard gives them more time to devote to wine making. Their results are impressive. For Rose, we took home a bottle of 2013 "Transparency", a white blend of 57% Muller Thurgau, 28% Muscat and 15% Riesling. Delightfully fruity, slightly sparkling, slightly sweet. For me we got the 2012 Syrah, actually a blend of 75% Syrah and 25% Grenache, a very interesting raspberry and spice experience. If the tasting room is a bit hard to find and keeps short hours, it's okay. You can find their products on some local grocery store shelves, including Sherm's Thunderbird in Roseburg. The name is derived from the 2 middle names of wine makers Scott Kelly and Dyson Demara, of Hillcrest. The tasting room is located in a historic building down town Roseburg and is cozy in an industrial way. The wine varietals are so different from what you find up in the Willamette Valley, plus the prices are more reasonable. I was gifted from my friends, a bottle of the Fume Blanc, a tad bit sweet Sauv blanc and am excited to pair it with my next cheese board. I am kicking my self that I didn't pick up a bottle of GSM, a Southern Rhone blend that is readily available here and Walla Walla. I definitely would recommend this place to anyone wanting to step off the Pinot Noir train , if just for a weekend.

The tasting room has a front area for visitors and a back area for bigger events. They also have chairs outside for a relaxed afternoon sipping wine. We did a tasting. I did like some of the wines, though, many would be better with a bit of age. Boco Noir, Traldigo and Cabernet were good. My favorite was a Riesling. It was mellow with a bit of sweetness that was perfect for summer. I definitely recommend trying Giardet Vineyards. It's a smaller, more friendly and laid back place to do a tasting to find what you like and buy a couple bottles and enjoy an afternoon with friends. It's a bit out of the way but I like it that way.

People would sometimes show up hours - literally early am hours - to place blankets and mark the spot that they wanted for the upcoming show. Obviously the size of the act that was performing would kind of dictate how early people would start showing up to lay claims on a spot. Through the years they have had a wide variety of performances spanning all types of genres of music. This year is really no different, with events cancelled last year, they are moving forward once again with the Tuesday night music night at the half shell. Cool venue for a show, nice grassy hillside that overlooks the South Umpqua river. Usually you can catch a nice breeze to minimize some of the heat. If you're in the area and a fan of live music, check this place out.
