If a tree falls in the neighborhood and there are people around to hear it, how many different stories will you get? Yelpers, this is my story. At 9:47 PM, I was startled with a loud noise...something like thunder and then I thought an earthquake and then I thought: tree fell. I ran to the front door and saw my oak tree lying horizontally in my driveway. Thankfully, we were spared our lives as well as major damages to the house and the cars. In the morning, we called our home insurance who assigned us Jim Kibblewhite's crew to clean up our misfortune. From the looks of what had happened, I didn't think it could all be done in one day, but in about 4-5 hours, the team of 5 guys who were armed with 2 chainsaws, 2 rakes, 1 pitchfork, a wood-chipper and another large truck and other equipment were able to chop into pieces what used to be our oak tree that stood tall and grand in our driveway. They were hard-working, efficient, easy to work with (saving us some of the smaller pieces of wood so we could use for firewood) and best of all, did a FABULOUS job in cleaning up after they had left. The 5 of them were able to clear our driveway, which was completely blocked by the tree, in one day and although our driveway can now be used, they will be back to clean further and pick up the larger pieces of wood. The only thing I wished they would have done differently is instead of letting one of our neighbors walk off with a wheelbarrow full of wood, I wished one of cutters would have approached us to see if our neighbor could have the wood! We weren't asked by our neighbor or any of the cutters if someone else could have some wood. We'd gladly give some wood since we had more than enough, but I think it's just common courtesy to ask the owner for whatever since it's not yours to begin with. I called Jim to evaluate a 75-100 ft heritage Monterey Pine whose roots had been massacred by contractors when my house was built a couple of years earlier, leaving me with a very scary situation; i.e., the prospect of a really big tree crushing my house. When I found out about the root issue, I obtained quotes from several arborists to remove the tree (sniff) and Jim's was among the lowest. At the same time, his guys have been with him for years, and he is fully insured, all of which gave me confidence that he would be able to safely take down this magnificent, albeit deadly, tree, without incidence, for a fair price. I had to leave the house the day of the job because I couldn't bear to witness the death of this tree. When I returned, it was gone and the place was cleared of debris. I had a very large Pine tree situated in my side yard right against a fence and very close to my house and my neighbor's house. I want to tell you that Jim and the Pacific Coast Tree Service crew did an outstanding job here. They came on time and prepared well. They were most expert in the job that they did, particularly the tree man. They cleaned up so well that there's hardly a trace of the immense pile of branches and twigs and sawdust. Without warning PG&E cut power to my tenant's home because PG&E's wires were being impacted by a very large tree on my property. I had to deal with this situation from 800 miles away-thank you YELP. I wanted to get the power turned back on to the home ASAP so I called several local tree removal companies to see who could do it immediately. Every call I made to each of the tree companies was answered by a machine. Out of all the companies Pacific Coast Tree Service was the only company that provided an emergency phone number...and more amazing was that Jim answered the emergency number when I called it! Jim understood the situation and was at the property within 30 minutes. His office assistant emailed a contract to me while he put a crew together by pulling workers from other jobs. He let me know the minute the job had progressed to the point PG&E could turn the power back on so I could notify PG&E. I only wish PG&E could have been as responsible as Pacific Coast Tree! I should also mention that they don't take credit cards so they trusted me to pay them, to honor the contract. We had them mulch the branches of the tree, cut down the trunk into smaller firewood size pieces. and remove 2 other ~10ft trees on our property. We kept the mulch and firewood for ourselves. They came out on a Sat and were done in 3 hours! It was amazing! They cleaned up afterwards and were very conscious of our property and other plants. I called to have a simple haul away of a large amount of back yard debris and to get a quote on some other large limb removal. I mistakenly gave them my address and without a phone call someone came over to my house and was looking over the fences to the yard. I called the service later that day to tell them one of their people showed up unannounced and I was unable to answer the door. Pacific Coast Tree Service decided to trespass on my property, while I watched through the window. The receptionist apologized and said someone would call me back to do the job. I am only writing this because I called them due to the great reviews on Yelp. Now, two days later and there has been no call back, so I guess they do not want the job. I would not say this company is dependable nor very professional to have someone skulking around your house without calling you, at all. We had a big project, mostly on a steep hill that required 1) removing a number of large dead/dying trees and 2) reducing the height of many other trees to help improve our view. When Jim first came to our home we were impressed that he asked to get on the roof so that he could get a clear idea of what lay beyond the trees and he then clearly and thoroughly went through our options. Once we had hired Jim (Pacific Coast Tree Service) to do the work, he made the process as painless as possible for us. He quickly handled the permits and inspections. To avoid disruption to us he did the work when we were out of town and left no evidence that they had been here except for a wonderfully improved view. They even cleared up building debris they found on the hillside and provided a number of 15 gallon cedars to replace the trees we had removed. We received nothing but compliments from our neighbors which was important to us, as we had newly moved in and didn't want to start off by upsetting anyone. Most importantly, as we see our trees from most windows in our home, if the work had been done badly there would be no escaping seeing that, instead we now have a shortened but natural looking tree line with a much improved view and more natural light. I am not very impressed with this company. I called last Friday late in the day. I did get a call back on Monday asking if I had called. I explained what I wanted done and they asked me if the tree was available to see if I wasn't home, but I told them that I wanted to discuss whether to simply trim or take down my large Bishop pine. They told me someone would contact me to arrange a time to view the tree. When Thursday came around with no contact from them, I decided that I should call them back. I did say that maybe I should get someone else, thinking that would get some response, but I guess that gave them their out and I got an email stating that they were booked up all through the winter. I am pretty sure if I hadn't called, I would have never heard from them. Back to square one after wasting a week of my time. read more
