(This review is long overdue!) Dr. Eriksen, Jasmine, and Jackie are the absolute BEST. These ladies are so welcoming, kind, and caring. Everyone is always greeted with a smile. Not only is this practice set up within a literal home but that is the exact feeling evoked through the people working there. I've never felt that way before within a medical practice. They usually feel sterile, rushed, cold, and tend towards a salesy feel. The comfort of being able to arrive and know that I will be in good hands is invaluable. Dealing with such a caring team of professionals puts my anxious mind at ease. With that said, I am saddened to say that my husband and I recently moved 2 hours away. I am going to thoroughly miss going to this dentist office! I know that dentist offices like this are few and far between. We are finishing our final rounds of Invisalign here and are regretful that this won't be our dentist office any longer. Most of the stars for this review are for Dr. K. He is very kind and I feel well taken care of. He takes the time to explain what's going on with my teeth in a way that I, as someone who doesn't know anything about teeth, can understand. I have seen him treat other staff with kindness as well. The drawbacks about this dental office is the rest of the staff. It seems they've had a lot of turnover. Each time I go back I see new faces. The hygienist who did my cleaning hit my gums a lot and was condescending to me about my dental care at home. I felt very awkward and not comfortable. On another note, they ping you to fill out electronic paperwork before appointments. There were way too many questions and many of them were nonessential. I ended up not finishing it, and it didn't make a difference in the level of care that I was provided. Overall, I like the care I get from the Dr. K, but the care I get from everyone else is iffy. read more

Office refuses to release records to patient. I went to this office for about 10 years when it was Dr. Tom Kuhn and he was wonderful. Now it is not with the new doctor that purchased the practice I have moved to another dentist and practice. I attempted to obtain a copy of my records released to myself. Leslie informed me that they release x-rays and do not release clinical notes. I asked her if this is normal practice and the said it was "completely normal". This is not normal, it's a HIPAA violation and they are required to be released to me. I filled out the release form asking for all records to be sent to myself and informed my new dentist's office what happened and their office called Pacific Heights Dental. The new office was told the same thing by Leslie and escalated it to Claudia the office manager. Claudia said that she needed to speak with me despite having the release form already. Pacific Heights Dental has given me the run around on releasing records which is immoral, unethical, and illegal. It's a shame that the wonderful practice that Dr. Kuhn built over decades before retirement has been reduced to this mess. Update: it is unfortunate that it requires myself calling repeatedly and another person calling and involving 3 different people at Pacific Heights Dental, plus a public post about this, before Pacific Heights Dental is willing to acknowledge that they will release records in full and without other requirements. Their behavior tells me that I made a good decision to leave their practice and hopefully this review prevents others from dealing with this shady office. read more

I would not recommend this dental office for several reasons. I was a patient since 2021 with Dr. Ericksen who is no longer here and was the main reason I ever stayed as a patient. I never was notified my Dr. was changing and every time I came in for a cleaning, I saw a different random Dr. I got my wisdom teeth out this past February by Dr. Kapil Kirpekar and that was absolutely the worst experience of my life. I would NEVER recommend getting your wisdom teeth out without an oral surgeon and without being put to sleep. Not only was I awake during this awful procedure, but I was in the waiting room for an hour just waiting for it to start. It has since been over 8 months, and my tongue is still numb from this procedure, and I've had to seek consultations from oral surgeons myself. Pac Heights dental did not offer any assistance for this issue other than shoving a referral to me, for their benefit I assume. Which I did not use. I am so disappointed in this service, because my tongue is STILL numb and affects my everyday life, from a procedure they should have advised a referral for to begin with. I have since left the practice and followed Dr. Ericksen to her new office and I'm beyond impressed with how the staff has assisted my persisting issues caused by this office. This office also has terrible communication. As other reviews I have seen, the front desk also scheduled me during a time the office would not be open, and only notified me the week before the appointment, when it was made 6 months in advance during my last visit. Not to mention, I got my wisdom teeth out on a Friday and there was no emergency contact number for issues that came up during the weekend from my procedure. Save your time and go somewhere professional! Edit: after leaving this honest review, I received a phone call requesting that I call the office to discuss what the issues were, when I should be allowed to write a review based on the service I received without harassment. I came here after neglecting the dentist for several years. In the initial and following 4 appointments I was treated with respect and great care by everyone I encountered. The staff are incredibly welcoming, and the hygienists and doctors are seriously top notch. You get the feeling they reach flow state while repairing your teeth. AVOID. I don't know what happened. The main doctor went on mat leave, and Dr. Eriksen took my Invisalign case. That's when things tanked.During our interactions, Dr. Eriksen was short and rude. She doesn't answer questions and interrupted me when I tried to ask about my care. I had no idea how long I would be in retainers or anything, because she simply wouldn't communicate.BAD CARE.Then, she tried to put me in Vivera (finish my treatment) before my back molars were fully touching and my front teeth were taking the brunt of my bite. :/ The rudeness and shortness got so bad I called to cancel my last appt and pay the fee, just to not see Dr. Eriksen. They encouraged me to come in and see her anyway, and she interrupted me mid-sentence the first time I said a thing. I said "I'd like to finish my sentence, please." And, when I did, she then said: "WHELLLL, AS I WAS SAYING!!!" I just got up and walked out. Another time, I lightly bit down when she wasn't communicating, and she screamed "YOU BIT ME" and ran to her office and slammed the door. I was just like, "Uhhh, is the appt over?" I brought her an orchid, gift card, and a greeting card to apologize. It was never even acknowledged. I asked questions, only about my care, and I was always treated like I was stupid. I was polite, and I was kind. But Dr. Eriksen's attitude was constantly harried and annoyed.. no time to communicate. Then, ending my treatment prematurely? No. THEY WOULDN'T GIVE ME MY FILES. I called to get my Invisalign transferred over the course of TWO WEEKS, when it takes a click of two buttons in the system. I was told "We'll get to that." with no promises.Then, "Oh yeah, we're working on that." (No timeline). I called Monday and they said "We had trouble with invisalign corporate but we'll get to it ASAP." I then called today and they claimed they had "legal issues" transferring to my new doctor. I told them I was a lawyer and this wasn't OK.. and they basically hung up on me. I called back to see if I could get the contact for their corporate office/legal counsel, and they were like "Oh, we just did that. We just transferred it." Again, with ZERO follow up. Completely unprofessional. Just all the runaround and drama were such a waste of time and energy... for no reason. I can't believe I had to postpone medical care bc of their nonsense, and I wish I had changed providers sooner. I don't know what this office's problem is. I don't know why their staff is turning over or why I was treated so rudely. It's just all very preschool. Snickering even. Huffing. Good God, it's so toxic in there.Dr. Hall and Teena were such a delight. And Mindy is a great practitioner. I wish Dr. Eriksen the best, but I don't advise you hit PHD until they work some of their issues out. I'm excited to see Dr. Hall again at her new practice, One Dental. My last dentist appointment was during Covid and unfortunately my precious dentist didn't survive the pandemic and had to close its doors. One of my molars cracked recently, leaving a gap between my molars. I was referred by Claudia that the dentist here are really good and passionate at their profession. So I booked an appointment, and all I can say is the place is really professional. All staff are very welcoming and friendly right when you first walk in the door. Dr. Kirpekar is extremely well knowledgeable and professional. The Dr, gave me the best advice on how to go about getting my first root canal on the molar that was cracked. Once all said and done, after I got my root canal, the crown was installed and I can say is I'm very impressed on the work and quality that was done on my tooth in a timely manner. Great job to all the staff at Pacific Heights Dental and to Dr. Kirpekar for the great work! One last thing, this place respects their clients time and they always run on time. They don't overbook and have you in the waiting room for hours before getting seen! A++++ read more

I have been coming to this dental practice for years and always used to receive great care. I used to rave to people about how much I loved my dentist! Sadly this has totally changed in the last year or so. The staff that had been there for years have all left. I have seen a different doctor every time I've come in with no consistency of care. One of the doctors I saw was extremely rude and condescending. The hygienists seem untrained. The wait times are totally unreasonable and they seem to either be understaffed or highly unorganized. I just waited an hour for 3 minutes of the doctor's time, only to have him rush through our appointment and cut corners. I would definitely not recommend this practice and will be looking for care elsewhere. read more

Many reasons for this rating, but for starters, the practice is, to put it nicely, "in transition"; dentists and hygienists have left and now a lot of clients are following suit. No one is minding this store; they don't return calls, and even when you come in in person, they promise to get to back to you, but never do. I have never had a problem with the dentists or hygienists, but the management has checked out. There's a reason by the way for wanting to contact them: the billing is reckless and incorrigible. Beware. Consider all previous reviews when finding your next dentist. This practice is a scam. I went in for a routine cleaning and X-rays. I was taken back 30 min after my appointment time. They took X-rays and the doctor came in to tell me I had four cavities before even looking in my mouth (i've never had a cavity). I left with a quote for $2000+ for 4 fillings. This made me seek out a second opinion and sure enough I had no cavities. read more

There is no better dental Hygienist then Teena Walsh ! Teena has been here for 17 years and her expertise shows! I was unable to get an appointment with her (she books way out, is very in demand) and made the mistake of going to see a another Hygienist at 450 Sutter. That was a waste of time and money! Teena do a sonic clean, she gets in there with tools, digging out the plaque with a careful yet gentle touch. Teena is not on autopilot either, she remembers the problem areas and is extremely attentive, answering my concerns to the best of her ability. I never get pressured for an upsale either, like many other practitioners. I felt safe coming here during Covid. I miss Dr Jacobson and am grateful Teena is still here practicing her excellence! read more

Avoid at all costs. My husband and I tried Pacific Heights Dental after moving to the neighborhood, making sure the practice was in-network, and reading positive reviews. The dentists pushed procedures and ancillaries on us (scalings, replacement fillings, mouth guards) that no dentist before or after said was necessary. They claimed to be in-network with both of our (separate!) insurances and charged us copays before every visit, only to charge us exorbitantly after the visits for amounts above the agreed-upon rate with insurance. This practice embodies all of the negative stereotypes of dentists as scam artists. read more

I have been a patient at this practice for close to 15 years and have only wonderful things to say about Pacific Height Dental . The office itself is warm and lovely - housed in classic SF Victorian. The office staff is welcoming and easy to contact and Hida is great at sorting and explaining all the gymnastics of dental insurance. Teena is an exceptional hygienist and is so kind and patient with my "super sensitive " teeth & gums. I could not imagine a cleaning without her. My dentist recently retired and I'm excited and feel fortunate to get to work with Dr Hall. I don't typically write reviews but feel it is important to write this one. I was a patient for ~2 years and received very bad care. The primary dentist changed three times (people kept leaving the practice) and I had multiple bad experiences where I felt like I was being taken advantage of and pressured to get expensive work done that I didn't need. I recently went to a new dentist and they shared that my 1 year old filling that Pac Heights Dental did was put in wrong and had cracked. To top it all off, the staff is pretty rude. read more

My experience here has been nothing but positive. I avoided dentists for years and I was that dumb teenager that didn't wear her retainer. Now my teeth shifted and all those years in braces were wasted. It was easy to reach the office to make an appointment and I was able to be seen within the same week. Everyone there was so patient with me and listened as to why I haven't been to a dentist in years and made my concerns feel valid. They didn't brush my anxiety off or lecture me for not going in years. They were so understanding and really made me feel at ease with the whole process. After my initial experience there, I decided to go through with invisalign at their office. Unfortunately my dental insurance does not cover it, but they do accept CareCredit! The whole staff is great and definitely changed the way I view going to the dentist. I'm glad I made that first initial appointment! read more

They feel no responsibility to alert you that they are out of network and will bill you $$$ for elective treatment that they push and pressure you to receive. A deceptive and unempathetic practice. This practice has plummeted downhill since Dr. Jacobson sold it. It took 2 horrible hours for the current dentist to perform an extraction. At one point she said, "Oh, there's nothing to hold on to." What kind of training did this dentist get? Their billing is months behind and grossly inefficient. Also, on Nov. 10, I received an email asking me to confirm an appointment for Dec. 1 that I never made. When I called about it, they said their system automatically generates these confirmation notices. For appointments that were not made? What kind of operation does that? The receptionist at my new dentist asked what practice I was leaving, so she could request my x-rays. When I said Pacific Hts. Dental, she said, "Yes, we've gotten several new patients from there." On my first visit, I was welcomed to the practice by the friendliest team I ever met. They must enjoy working there. The people sitting in the front office were nice, very professional and had all my insurance information ready when I got there. Teena, the hygienist was very thorough yet very gentle. I was then seen by Dr. Hall. I read that she has been practicing for over 15 years and had a great reputation. When I met her, I realized why she has such a great reputation. Not only was she very sweet, she was very gentle and had a great bed side manner. She surpassed all my expectations and I felt no discomfort at all. I have been a long time patient at this practice and am excited to see the growth and new services offered. Barbara in reception is an absolute gem. Her friendly and warm demeanor is coupled by her knowledge of how to deal with insurance issues- not to mention how easily she searches for appointments with specific parameters. While not an easy task - she would never let me know what a pain in the neck I can be! As with any dental practice - it's the hygienist who sees the patient and spends the most time - and Tina and Judy are my go's when booking appointments. Both rockstars. Tina has been cleaning my teeth for several years- and puts in the time and effort it takes to help me achieve continued health. She's attune to my teeth sensitivity- offers solutions both in the chair and for home care. Those subtle reminders and tips go a long way. Judy was also stellar, but recently left the practice. I've been a patient of Dr. Jacobsen for almost 20 years. That I'm itself says something as I think I've gone through 7 or 8 General Practitioners in that time. Moreover, I've seen hygienist Teena for that long as well. Coming from a family with a history of terrible gum disease, I am incredibly particular about my cleanings and come in 3 times a year. Teena is meticulous and uses good old fashioned scaling to clean my teeth, which I much prefer to other methods. I'm incredibly lucky to have very few cavities, but for the two that I got on a wisdom tooth a few years ago, the process of getting them filled was straightforward and the pain management was appropriate for the job. "But wait," you say, "what about that chip on your front tooth." Well, I've had that since I was in 5th grade, and it's in a tough spot to patch. I appreciate a dentist was willing to admit that a patch wouldn't stick and just said "that's just part of who you are now." Too many friends tell me about dentists who focus on the cosmetic. I've been a patient at Pacific Heights Dental for 16 years and have never considered going elsewhere for dental care. Dr. Jacobsen was referred to me by a friend when I first moved to San Francisco. I've always enjoyed the whole practice, from Barbara's warm welcome from the front office, to Teena who is the gentlest hygienist I've ever known, to Jacobsen and his assistant/wife Gwinny. I have lots of fillings from my younger years and have needed a few crowns since I've been a patient here. Jacobsen is consistently professional, communicative, and friendly. The office is located in a beautiful old house that's been renovated to offer views of the sky as you sit back and have your teeth worked on. And there's always good music playing. Teena has been my dental hygienist for a few years. She is extremely thorough and spends lots of time getting my teeth clean. Dr. Kuhn is also amazing, checks teeth, jaw, etc. (A more holistic approach). The building, and old Victorian, is filled with nice art and the music is relaxing (usually classic rock). read more

Dr Kuhn is my primary dentist and is prudent. He is practical and doesn't suggest extra work. For the past year I've been seeing Dr. Aja Hall at this office for crowns. She is meticulous and proactive. The office staff is welcoming and their scheduling system is foolproof. Teena Walsh is the dental hygienist I see for cleanings and she is thorough and makes the experience tolerable (I'm a wimpy patient) with her warm demeanor. I wish I could give a rating for each service they provide because I would give the dental hygienist Tina and the front desk a 5. But alas this is an overall review of the business and the bad has far outweighed the good. My 60 year old mother and I came to PHD about 2 years ago on the recommendation of a friend. He told us about Dr. Hall and the superb work he does at a reasonable San Francisco price. We arrived to find out that Dr. Hall had sold the company and was semi retiring. The business is now a cosmetic dentistry. My mother came in to correct a bridge that was installed 10 years prior. She told not only Dr. Hall but the new dentist exactly what she was coming in for. They then told her that she would also need veneers and an Invisalign. The dentist did not tell her that the veneers would come out to over 30k and when she made the appointment she still was not informed of that major fact. It was not until after the operation was done and my mother tired and in pain went to check out that they told her the amount. Anybody can tell you that before anything that cost over $1000 is planned that you are supposed to have a run down of the cost then sign off on it before you even make the appointment. My mother did not know what to do but felt pressured to pay for a procedure that she didn't even want at a price that she could not afford. On top of that my mother during the procedure asked about when she could have her bridge fixed and the dentist who was there there mind you for the initial consultation said "you want your bridge done?" That was 2 years ago and my mom who felt betrayed and stolen from decided to not go back. I have stayed there due to the amazing hygienist and to finish out my Invisalign. Yet today my mother woke up choking to find that her whole back left veneer fell out during the night and almost killed her. She now has a big hole where a tooth is suppose to be and a 30k piece of junk that almost killed her. read more

Dr. Jacobsen is my dentist and he is fantastic and when I've had urgent dental needs and he's not in I've seen the other dentists in the practice and they have all been consistently excellent as well as has every single hygenist. Knowledgeable, professional, kind, responsive to my needs as a very low pain tolerance person, and have always taken the time to answer my questions and discuss options fully.
