As expected there was a slight smell when starting the furnace back up (not dissimilar to how it might smell after being off all summer) but that cleared up quickly. We haven't had them cleaned in the 12 years we've been here (I know, I know...) but I really expected them to be worse. They even replaced the filters on the furnace (I provided them). I am not sure what the parallel is to Hawaii or San Diego. In Hawaii and San Diego, contractors fail to show up to work when the surf is high. In Vancouver... who knows, but getting contractors in general to show up is a major pain. J & M is the exception and they are exceptional. They showed up as scheduled, they stayed within their bid and they did an excellent job of coordinating the permit and following up.
