What more can I say then that the fish I have gotten here has always been fresh and fairly priced. Any opportunity I have I stop in and get a few dozen of their little neck clams (an east coast variety) to make either a linguini in white clam sauce or New England clam chowder. The clams I have gotten have always been extremely fresh and they have ice to keep the clams cold until one gets home. I have also gotten frozen shrimp and bay scallops, both of which have been excellent. The bay scallops, like the clams, are almost impossible to find in the PNW - but they have them and they are fresh. Also, a shout out to the employees - they are always very friendly. Note that they also run specials (I believe all the time) on about 3 items at a time. Last time I was in, they had four varieties of oysters at $1 per. read more

They supply your favorite fresh seafood to local restaurants and grocery stores. For such a large seafood distributor, this is their humble retail location where they have been on SE Powell Blvd since the early 40's. Their fresh selection of seafood comes from as far north as Alaska and as far southeast as the Gulf of Mexico. The selection changes based on what is available fresh based on the season. Don't see what you're looking for? They can order it for you! In addition, there is a large selection of frozen seafood. Some of it is self-service in a deli freezer, or you can ask for it and they may have it in the back. Service is as good as it gets. They're experienced, knowledgeable, and friendly. If you like, they can box your seafood and pack it in ice. This is above and beyond. My personal favorite are their fresh steelhead fillets. It's from their own sustainably raised steelhead farm on the Columbia River about 5 hours from Portland. Light, flavorful, and flaky. I could eat it everyday, and sometimes I do. For Thanksgiving this year I planned to make a dish with whole founder. Problem is, while flounder is a staple on the East Coast, it's not popular here and nobody had it. Except Pacific Seafood. "No flounder, but our buyer says there's some big petrale sole that's running around 3lbs each. Will those do?" Indeed they would, and did. If you're looking for something specific, do remember to call in advance; if it's being caught anywhere in the world, PacificSeafood can probably get it for you with a few days notice (PS is owned by possibly the biggest international fish company in the world). The staff is helpful and friendly and can suggest alternatives if something is just not going to be available. Do keep in mind that they primarily sell wholesale to the restaurant trade, so you generally get whole fish, crab, shrimp etc. and it's up to you to clean and filet them. PS is also the only place I know in Portland that regularly stocks deboned butterflied trout, useful for a number of recipes. read more

We purchased a whole crab at Pacific Seafood on Friday and decided to eat it the next day. The nice people at the shop had cleaned the crab and packed it in ice for us. We went to eat the crab and discovered that the center section was all black and the crabmeat was gone. Well, upon cracking the tiny crab legs and pulling out the meat we found it to be in pieces and stringy. This crab had previously been frozen and then thawed out. Freezing a crab destroys the crab and makes it inedible. I had known that regular supermarkets sell previously frozen crabs but did not know that a seafood outlet like Pacific would stoop so low. read more

Although the seafood we purchased seemed decently fresh, we found an inch-sized piece of plastic that was pulled out while chewing crab. Any freshness of food does not account for allowing a large amount of plastic to be missed and included in human consumption. Its totally and utterly wrong. It means the food was not inspected properly and questions the practice of this establishment's quality control. So why does this bad boy get sweet, tender dungeness crab risotto with crimini mushrooms & asparagus tips for V-day? Because it's still dungeness crab season & for $5.99/lb there's no need to schlep to Costco, get run over by 5 SUV's, 3 shopping carts, & the random stroller or two to get 2 crabs for the same price when I only need one. Did I mention that the lovely lady behind the counter will not only clean the crab for you (She removes the back with one quick snap AND pulls out the scary monsterish appendage-shaped lungs so you don't have to do it later while thoughts of, "OMG. Did that just move??" go running through your pretty little head.) but also gives out cooking tips. I'm mixed on Pacific Seafood. I have friends who ocean fish to support their families. Some have lost their life fishing. Pacific has been a very rough bargainer with fishers. Pacific Seafood is no doubt supporting families of employees. Eating fish customers are all in supporting their own same family values. For salmon, if you have a chance to buy from a native fisher, that is ideal. Salmon are literally part of the spiritual fabric of many Northwest tribes. And of course you can catch fish yourself! Pacific is next best. They understand sustainability better than most and can tell you where the fish are sourced. If you are near one of their coast cleaning factories the fresh packed shrimp is sublime. Small Oregon pink coldwater shrimp are in season April-October each year and are fished sustainably. If you are buying "local sustainable" seafood at a store, question. Who caught when. Where. Does the fish go by other names. Likely you are getting fish from Pacific. This particular store is small. It has a selection of the most common local fish and shellfish, fresh and frozen. The Pacific Foods website, with a bigger selection, is maintained by the warehouse in Clackamas. The warehouse is focused on filling wholesale and restaurant orders, there is no retail there. But if you see something on the Pacific Foods website, phone ahead a day in advance to the Powell store to see if they can special order it for you. read more

Oh hell yes. I am so excited to have found Pacific Seafood. When your loved one has frequent hankerings for seafood of all varieties, and you both find the oyster cravings are coming faster than you can earn the dough to buy them, Pacific has got your back. I love this place for so many reasons: -great friendly service. They are matter of fact, helpful, quick and funny. I always rush over right after work to grab a dozen oysters before they close at 6, and they always serve it up with speed. -prices are off the hook. Most oyster varieties are 6.95 for the dozen, and they will order whatever variety you want if you call ahead. Lobster tails are almost too cheap NOT to buy, and tuna steaks are crazy affordable. -great selection. They have pretty much any variety of shelfish and seafood you can think of, and you can order with short lead time anything else you want including live crawfish. I hate driving on Powell or in this part of town in general, but I go here to get seafood from this market. It is well priced and always fresh. The people that work here are wonderful. They are SO helpful and willing to do just about anything to help you and your new seafood purchase make it home. They always offer ice and last year, they completely packed up an order of Oysters for us (box and everything) for no extra charge so we could get them to Idaho for Christmas at my in laws house. It's rare to find service like this anywhere in Portland, so I wish I could give them an extra 6th star just for their customer service! read more

The most awesome place in town to get fresh oysters. They also have fresh whole tuna in the month of August you gotta love it it's much cheaper to buy it there. AMAZING Red King Crab legs. Such a difference. I bought Golden King Crab legs at Whole Foods at $27 per pound, pretty skinny, not alot of meat. Pacific Seafood had Red King Crab at $23 per pound and another local market had Red King Crab at $39 per pound, way out of my price range! Pacific Seafood Red King Crab was so delicious and sweet! More than slightly fishy with your standard bins of assorted seafood. Difference is, everything is absolutely fresh with a good variety of fish and shellfish. I bought a live dungeness crab today. The employee didn't show me the crab before weighting it, I trusted the establishment so kept quiet. One claw and one leg missing pitifull crab at the end. So disappointed, will never go back. There are 2 more sea food places on Powell, Pacific seafood should take care of their customers better. read more
