Thankfully, the halibut pieces were not only massive, they were also tender, flaky, juicy and piping-hot! Among the best in the city, if you ask me! Additionally, the Piedmont Station food cart pod is probably the most aesthetic in Portland, and has a solid variety of dining options. Probably one of the BEST fish and chips, we've tried traveling along the Oregon coast/going through Oregon. The fish quality is amazing. Especially their Alaskan halibut. You HAVE to get what they specialize in, please. You will not be disappointed. The breading on the fish... wow so crispy flaky, nice and thin, where you won't get sick of it. The breading doesn't overpower the fish. The fries, I feel are just as important when it comes to fish and chips. These were nicely seasoned with the prefect crunch. Oh me oh my. The fish here was so good. I had just come from a little trip to the coast trying a bunch of Fish and Chips spots and seafood, and this place blew all of them out of the water. One thing I love about Portland is its food truck culture. I found this little place right here on Yelp. There's not a lot to say other than the fish was absolutely delicious, crispy, and hot. I had prawns, they're massive so 4 was definitely enough. The fries were seasoned and also hot when it received. You can get vinegar and other condiments. I liked the system overall in where you are given a pager that sets off, it helps with customer flow and allows you too look around the market while waiting. The owners are wonderful and very kind. Owner is a super friendly guy and is fun to talk to especially for a first time visiter. Had to get a 2-piece (4-piece is the other option) of their halibut in order of their food cart name. The 2-piece halibut will run you $16 vs. their salmon or cod which run $11 but worth trying. Each entree comes with a side of fries, tartar sauce, and malt vinegar. The fish here was flaky and had a super light coating (might be tempura?). I only slightly would prefer it to be fried a little longer as I like the coating to stay on a bit more with my fish. Top it with the lemon, malt vinegar, and if you like cocktail sauce and you got yourself a meal. I enjoyed the detail on the fries as they had freshly ground black pepper! We also got a cup of their chowder based on the reviews and it's wonderful on a cold day. It's savory and has a thick consistency which I like with my chowders. Owner is super great to ensure you have all sides and your meal whether you're eating in or taking it to go. Alright, let me just put this out there: I am an absolute "fish and chips snob". The vast majority of fish and chips I order at restaurants leaves me underwhelmed. It's rare that I order fish and chips and am happy with what I get. Which is why I'm very happy to say: The Original Halibuts is THE BOMB!!! In fact, after going today for the first time it has taken the helm as my favorite fish and chips anywhere in Oregon! That distinguished honor used to belong to Luna Sea in Yachats (which is still excellent). But yeah, The Original Halibuts is even better! What makes it so good? First, the halibut is absolutely fresh and of the highest quality. You can't fake that part either, so color me impressed. Second, the tempura-like batter is absolutely PERFECT! Good fish and chips is all about the fish, and the batter should be light, crisp, and not at all greasy. It should merely compliment the fish. (Far too many places over-batter and over-cook their fish, leaving you with a greasy, too-bready gut bomb.) In this regard The Original Halibuts nails the correct fish-to-batter ratio with a delicious, light, awesome crust. Third, the fries are plenty good. Not the absolute best I've had, but definitely better than average. And thankfully The Original Halibuts doesn't do something that I believe should be deemed a crime against humanity: they don't serve "battered fries". (It must be said yo...whoever invented "battered fries" should be lined up against a wall and summarily shot without trial.) Pricing is entirely fair for what you're getting. High quality halibut, right now, is about $25-$30/pound. Yeah, it's not cheap. But here the old adage rings true: "You get what you pay for." Seriously, if you're looking for what is hands-down the best fish and chips in Oregon, you have to check this place out. Visiting from Los Angeles and made my way to the food truck/trailer scenes. On the road there was plenty of parking, and even a parking structure that you can park in for free. The food trailers were in a U shape and I'd say at least 80% were open for business. When taking my walk about and figuring out what I wanted this truck jumped out at me. From the woman who was taking orders to the gentleman that was cooking, the whole experience was great. I settled in the Alaskan cod, and a cup of clam chowder. I was given a beeper and told that it would be about five minutes. Was able to snag a table and things were ready pretty quick. They weigh out the fish, so normally it's 2 pieces, but because of the weight I got 3. Everything came out super hot and smelled amazing. I first started with the chowder and it was delicious and pepper forward, which I LOVED! Let's talk about these fries...because let me tell you...these fries were fucking incredible. They had that crunch that when you heard it, you were like, "oh hell yeah." They we're so so good. If I had had just the fries and chowder I would have been happy...but, let's talk about the star of this plate. The fish. It was so crunchy, and delicious.
