The staff here is always so helpful and kind! I also love that they have a fish market attached, so you can take home fresh seafood after your meal too. Came here for happy hour with my family and we were seated right away. Unfortunately, a few dishes I wanted to try were unavailable that day, including the Ora King salmon crudo and smoked salmon platter, but I'll definitely be back to try them another time. We ordered the happy hour fish tacos which were good, although I wish the fish pieces were a little bigger. The clam chowder was delicious and ended up being my family's favorite dish. The food was left outside of the door to my building. I live downtown Portland. It was during the time when the preparation was getting underway for the parade also. It is also a bad neighborhood. My wife saw a review for Flying Fish on TikTok, and as such our visit here immediately became a top priority. Craving oysters (when did we become these people?!), we stopped in for lunch, ordered a half dozen (and later, another half dozen), plus the Rockfish and Chips, and the Hot and Crispy Fish Sando. Everything was enjoyable: the sando was reminiscent of an upscale Fish Filet (I mean that in a positive way) with a tiny bit of heat; the Rockfish were fried in a salt-and-pepper-y seasoned batter that paired well; and the oysters, of course, were a particular highlight, as previously mentioned, since a second set was ordered to finish off the meal. The only disappointing thing about the whole meal was a rather uninspired spicy Bloody Mary, which didn't really do much for me, sadly. Service was friendly and attentive, and the covered outdoor dining area was spacious, well-lit, and warm enough to be welcoming and comfortable. There's also a secondary covered and fenced dining patio that is dog-friendly, which is another perk! And lastly, the market and bar inside boasts a heaping helping of fresh fish finery coming in many forms: fresh, frozen, 'frigerated, filleted and fried, either served over the counter, or available to-go. Lots of smoked salmon options as well! Very cool place, and one that my wife in particular has fallen in love with. Of course I was happy to oblige! Sitting outside, we each ordered some white wine and did the 12 oyster order which did 4 samples each from 3 regions. Really enjoyed our quick stop here for my B'day week. They are closed on my official B'day so we went on a Monday during their Happy Hour service 2-5pm. I wish it came with some pickled vegetables or onions. To be fair, I asked what was good on the menu and the waitperson listed off a bunch of menu items, but didn't mention the salmon platter. My daughter and I have been going to flying fish for a few years now. We just went a couple of weeks ago and man have they expanded, but the fried fish is STILL the best. The atmosphere is very casual and relaxed, the service is always fantastic and the smoked salmon collar is delicious, but that grilled steelhead plate with coconut rice and cilantro slaw sent me into ORBIT it was so good. We ordered the smoked salmon platter thinking we'd get strips of salmon (like from the grocery store) but we got ACTUAL salmon steak pieces that were smoked. The platter also came with a smoked salmon spread, whole grain mustard, toasted bread, and pickled veggies, which all came together so well. I'm a huge fan of dishes with different elements that harmonize beautifully, and this was that. Was also a huge fan of the escolar crudo, which was seared escolar with a sweet sriracha-like sauce, a cilantro herb mix, and toasted nuts. This dish also came together so, so well. Half the restaurant is a food cart with oysters and drinks, and the other half is the actual restaurant. After you get a table, you order with the host at the front. She also taught him how to eat it which was a great experience right on the coast where they have lots of fresh seafood. I ordered 3 piece rock fish, no longer halibut or cod, fish and chips with the side of chips and Cole slaw. I didn't order the child's meal or a sample. I ordered a dinner. Times are hard, the price of food is high so don't pull that crap of decreasing quality and size to make it seem right. It ISN'T RIGHT; it's a con job and I personally will not be back in person or order on line. When I have been there the service has always been stellar, but this? I'm disgusted with the joke of a side of Cole slaw with no flavor and a few bits of kale. Get it together folks, you're deceiving the public. So done with this kind of trying to pull the wool over the public's eyes when prices go up. I declined the tartar sauce as there was a friggin charge for that. It came with the meal regardless and I better not have been charged. I don't like tartar sauce so I don't want it but I sure as heck wouldn't pay for it.
