Order before seating yourself. Covered outdoor seating only, but they have a lot of patio heaters here so you are set during the colder months. Fairly quick service. The staff here is always so helpful and kind! I also love that they have a fish market attached, so you can take home fresh seafood after your meal too. Unfortunately, a few dishes I wanted to try were unavailable that day, including the Ora King salmon crudo and smoked salmon platter, but I'll definitely be back to try them another time. The food was left outside of the door to my building. I live downtown Portland. It was during the time when the preparation was getting underway for the parade also. It is also a bad neighborhood. My wife saw a review for Flying Fish on TikTok, and as such our visit here immediately became a top priority. Craving oysters (when did we become these people?!), we stopped in for lunch, ordered a half dozen (and later, another half dozen), plus the Rockfish and Chips, and the Hot and Crispy Fish Sando. Everything was enjoyable: the sando was reminiscent of an upscale Fish Filet (I mean that in a positive way) with a tiny bit of heat; the Rockfish were fried in a salt-and-pepper-y seasoned batter that paired well; and the oysters, of course, were a particular highlight, as previously mentioned, since a second set was ordered to finish off the meal. The only disappointing thing about the whole meal was a rather uninspired spicy Bloody Mary, which didn't really do much for me, sadly. Service was friendly and attentive, and the covered outdoor dining area was spacious, well-lit, and warm enough to be welcoming and comfortable. There's also a secondary covered and fenced dining patio that is dog-friendly, which is another perk! And lastly, the market and bar inside boasts a heaping helping of fresh fish finery coming in many forms: fresh, frozen, 'frigerated, filleted and fried, either served over the counter, or available to-go. Lots of smoked salmon options as well! Very cool place, and one that my wife in particular has fallen in love with. Of course I was happy to oblige! Sitting outside, we each ordered some white wine and did the 12 oyster order which did 4 samples each from 3 regions. Can't remember which regions they were; maybe if I had wrote this review right after we came here. The oysters were succulent and fresh with the lemon and horseradish giving some tartness and heat to it; as it should be! My dad and step mother ran into the head chef when they were on a cruise so they wanted to come here for Mother's Day to check it out. Lots of gluten free options but I don't eat seafood. The inside of the fish is a semi-mushy texture and it's a little fatty. There are bones, so you have to pull those out. I was thankful for the Dijon and fruit compote because it helped cut down on the richness. The cheese just contributed to the richness, so I passed. I wish it came with some pickled vegetables or onions. To be fair, I asked what was good on the menu and the waitperson listed off a bunch of menu items, but didn't mention the salmon platter. I inquired about it because I was interested. Lol Lesson learned. Don't go against the grain. I'll eat here again, but I'll order the fish and chips. My daughter and I have been going to flying fish for a few years now. We just went a couple of weeks ago and man have they expanded, but the fried fish is STILL the best. The atmosphere is very casual and relaxed, the service is always fantastic and the smoked salmon collar is delicious, but that grilled steelhead plate with coconut rice and cilantro slaw sent me into ORBIT it was so good.
