I agree with the one star reviews. I walked in and there were no other customers in the store. Not at all helpful when I asked if they had clams. Was told I had to be more specific (not sure how much more specific I had to be) and the guy waved me off to go look over there. For cheaper you can go with the frozen options which are still pretty darn good. A lot of people who make hot pot at home shop here, so that is why you'll also see a variety of vegetables and hot pot soup bases for your convenience. Employees here speak English, Cantonese, and Mandarin, so communication issues should be minimal. Cash, Debit, Credit all accepted. We came here to buy live dungeness crab, they have a few huge holding tanks, which the crabs are separated by size. They even have a separate tank for 1 claw crabs for a couple of bucks cheaper, i thought that was fair that they'd sell the damaged crabs for cheaper, i'd be kinda pissed off if i paid full price for a crab that was missing a claw. They also have live spot prawns, geoduck clams and lobster and some fish which I'm guessing changes by the season. There are also some other fresh fish on ice and a small selection of asian produce. When I visited I must of seen over 500 crabs in various holding tanks, separated by weight size, they even had a separate tank for one armed crabs. All the prices were way below the grocery stores. That being said, the only reasons I have not, is because I am (at this moment) unfortunately the only seafood lover in my household, and I now live in SW Portland. In the past, I drove all the way from my house in West Linn to ABC Seafood at least 1x a month. The quality, price, and wide selection of live exoskeleton seafood creatures, fish and shells were unbeatable. More than worth the drive! Like a shop in Chinatown NYC is correct; has a good selection of fish and made me remember my good fish markets back east. The fish was fresh, the place kept fairly clean for a fish shop and the staff was fine to me; very on point and they run their business well. Appreciate that they sell other basic extras; some veggies, fruits, (saved me a trip to another store). Got 2 pounds of the prettiest, fresh whole bass and a pound a cod fish from here. Took my butt back on the #9, (frequent bus line on Powell, good for those of us who don't drive). I was just about ready to give up; catch a Greyhound bus up to Seattle, Just to get some fish, (besides salmon and tilapia). ABC Seafood was recommended by a guy on the bus and Glad I went. SHOPPERS BEWARE!! Yesterday I went in as usual and have been a regular shopper for the last 10 years. I bought 4 pounds of clams. When I got home I discovered they had ROCKS MIXED IN WITH MY CLAMS!! About a pound of rocks was in with the 4 pounds of clams I purchased. The rocks were the same size, color and shape as the clams. I bet they figured people wouldn't come back to dispute the rocks for a few dollars. How can they knowingly look at their regular customer in the eye and ask them if they wanted more clams and give them rocks? This business is dishonest and shady. I have always read with interest the reviews people have written about ABC that they were treated rudely, yaddah, yaddah, yaddah, sorry folks you just don't understand the culture, I could go on about that but nobody says it better than Yen D. in her review, so with apologies to Yen and giving her full credit I offer you this quote: "Asian culture doesn't give a shit about coddling you like a little bitch and making sure your overly sensitive, politically correct white feelings as its #1 priority." Just about sums it up, don't you think? Really the selection here is at times phenomenal, and prices I have found to be the best in town. Like yesterday, they had three types of live crab, dungenous, snow and softshell blue crab, they had many types of live fish, shrimp, prawns and oodles of different shellfish, it was like shopping in an aquarium. And no, they didn't kiss my white little ass, but they did hurriedly offer to help in broken English, which is fine with me. The place was jam packed with dozens of customers, busy, harried, brusk, a little rude and I was almost the only non-Asian there. It was a decidedly cultural experience, which I enjoyed. The shop is really quite small and is stuffed floor to ceiling with aquariums filled with all types of live critters, selection varies seasonally and it is always a joy to come here and find something I didn't expect. Nothing says fresh fish like watching it being killed in front of your very eyes. Definitely not for the squeamish but if you want some fresh tilapia, sidle on up to the tank that holds them and point to what you want. It will be caught, killed, and gutted for you before you can even ask "HOW MUCH?!" Last time I bought one it was so fresh it was still having last minute muscle spasms in my car on the ride home. As barbaric as I'm making it sound, I do have a heart and was screaming my lungs out at the possibility it could still be alive. But oh man, steamed tilapia in ginger/soy-well worth it. This is the place to go for fresh clams, oysters, crabs, lobsters...whatever your seafood loving heart desires. Forget the frozen crap sitting on ice at your local grocer! They sort the crabs by size and helped me pick the right ones for my dinner party. Very tasty and fairly priced. I highly recommend buying live and skipping the pre-cooked grocery store ones.
