This place is absolutely beautiful and in the perfect location; it definitely gives Tulum vibes. Unfortunately, the food didn't quite meet my expectations. We ordered the salmon skewers, rice, fries, teriyaki burger, banana espresso martini, and the matcha martini. The salmon wasn't fully cooked in my opinion and could have been grilled or seared a bit longer. The rice and burger were just okay, nothing particularly memorable. First off there is a parking lot right across the street but if you want to stay for more than 3 hours, you're paying $35. Once we arrived we were seated outside on the patio and the area was nice and clean and it has like this tiki vibe to it. Our waitress was quick to take our order and gave some good suggestions on food. I decided on the kushi-yaki ponzu king salmon, the rock shrimp and some fries. I also went with the marine layer and everything was solid! I will say that their portions are small and the burger is also pretty small. My 6 year old son ordered a burger and it's was the perfect size for him. Oddly, I thought my oldest son's chicken nuggets was the highlight of everything. The chicken was nice and tender. Shrimp katsu bao buns: These were sort of like fish tacos in bao bun form. We liked them, but they were pretty small to consider a main dish. If they came with a side salad or something that would help. We were glad we added on another item to round out the meal. We also added on the garlic butter noodles with a side of chicken teriyaki. We actually weren't told the chicken cost extra (and it didn't say that on the menu) so the $6 charge was a bit of a surprise. But they were very flavorful, not too overly buttery, and the chicken was very tender. I got a second drink, the coconut banana espresso martini. I liked the way it tasted, but didn't love all the coconut pieces floating on top -- it felt like I was drinking orange juice with pulp. It took away from the deliciousness and smoothness of the cocktail. This is a very fun and lively restaurant right on the beach. Just FYI parking is SUPER tough but that's pretty standard for Venice. We came into Belles after visiting Kassi Beach and we loved it. The hostess was so kind and informed it would be about a 5-10 minute wait and we could go to the bar meantime. We were greeted by Eric who was very kind and attentive. I got the Belles with tequila and it had lime, pineapple, cucumber, and green chili. My friend got the Coconut Banana Espresso Martini. They have four different kinds of Espresso Martinis. We got moved to our table pretty quickly and our server was Chloe and was very lovely. The lounge chairs and back of the house is more chill and is where I escape to not feel claustrophobic and bumping shoulders. It's like a tiki frathouse social scene vibe here. Most options in the area had already shuttered by 9pm, so Belles was it (or delivery fast food, yuck). Host was friendly enough and got me seated at the bar, something I do regularly in SF. Once seated, I looked around to realize I was a room full of early 20 year olds seemingly ramping up for a wild night. Sigh. Do LA college kids partake in Thirsty Thursday? Keep in mind if you're wanting something chill -- this particular Thursday night was not at all chill. The menu has your classics with asian/polynesian twist -- I think just about every food preference could find something to eat (plain burger to sashimi), which is a plus for families. First order of business: ordering a drink. Wait, A SLUSHY DRINK?! Yes please! Even though I was sitting at the bar attempting to make eye contact with every person (mostly bros) who stood in front of me, it took ~10 minutes and finally asking (without server's eye contact at first) "hey, can I order from you or do I need to flag down a server?" Maybe I wasn't dressed up enough in my fleece and black jeans (aka no tatas out)? Maybe I was ignored because I didn't have the pounds of makeup + fake eyelashes? Maybe they're not used to people actually sitting at/ordering from a bar seat? Maybe they're used to dealing with a different type of bird and we just don't mix? I dunno. Once I got the drink order in, my indecisive, starving brain was able to find something I knew I would enjoy -- a sushi roll. When someone (bartender?) handed over my drink, I placed the food order 'cause I was not sure when I'd have the chance again. I couldn't figure out who worked what role, and maybe they were switching some people from dinning room to bar, shifts were ending...? I dunno. These are things that happen in most restaurants, and some simple planning and communication goes a long way. Drink was more liquid, less slushy. I know slushy machines are a pain to upkeep/maintain, but maybe these were due for service? Or the person who put the mix in got the proportions off? If the quality of drink is diminished when serving, why not say "no good, want something else?" I dunno. Even so, had someone asked me if I wanted a second drink before I finished my meal, I probably would have ordered a second 'cause slushy pina coladas are hard to come by in my neck of the woods up north and some slush is better than none. Given we're on the west coast and it was mid-week, I assumed it'd be fresh fresh. It wasn't old, per se, but the portion and flavor was disappointing. Not to mention, I had to remind staff about the order... When I got my bill, it felt way too overpriced for the food and service I received. Given what I know now, I'd approach a late meal at Belles very differently, including/especially NOT sitting at the bar if I am going to order food. read more
