Booked an appointment a month out for an annual check up (we've done these for years past) and blood test, as discussed and recommended by the vet and was told our appointment was not for what we booked for and that the "doctor" wouldn't be able to see my pet. Asked if the "technician" can do blood tests at least but was not given a response, instead they gave my dog 4 vaccines without asking for clarity on the situation and were more then fine with printing out our records and sending us elsewhere. This is a glorified vet mill that charges you for simple treatments and outsources any sort of actual veterinarian work because they are unable to do most things. A disaster! This is part due to not being able to be with your pet when being examined. But all the more important to show what the vet thinks is wrong vs. telling you in medical terms. I'm not stupid, but I'm slow to react when confused or shocked. So when I brought my 5 y.o. dog in for the second time to find out why she continues to raise her head to the sky stretching her neck, Dr. Choi reported it was her spine. Now there is a large oval soft tissue in front of her neck that fluctuates smaller than larger and was new starting a few months ago, and that is what I wanted checked. Instead he said she flinched when he squeezed the back of her neck. (I would, too!) So he supplied her 2 meds - a pain med for arthritis in 'old' dogs at $60, and an anti-Inflamatory for muscle spasms $45. A blood test also for over $200 which came back all normal. My dog is 5 years old, sprite and playful, never exhibits pain and does not have spasms. I called and said I thought there was a misdiagnosis for her stretching behavior and also wondered if I could return the unused meds. He of course said no that it was illegal, but then he added - in email- to never return there for veterinary services. If I didn't trust his advice, then ... Wow. Like vets don't make mistakes? Like shouldn't vets ask more questions about the dog from the owner who lives with the pet vs 15 mins with your pet on a table without owner present?! You bet I'm not returning there for services. And you shouldn't either! This megalomaniac vet is spiteful and insecure. That is not someone to trust your pet with. Too bas cuz the office staff are wonderful. The other vet seems good tho not overly concerned with the stretching behavior. She asked for a video of it. I sent it. And never heard back. I want my money back! Wish me luck!! I know I've given a 5 star Yelp before. I'm happy to do it again since I don't see it. Dr Randall has been trusted by our family to care for my dogs since he has been at Pacific Pet Hospital. I've been a client there for 27 years. He cares about our pets. He gives solutions even when it seems there aren't any. What I'm trying to say is we are just crazy about him and would never consider going anywhere else. We make the treck from SF now but he is well worth it. Thank you Dr.! And to Mary, you have seen us through our last dog and now 10 years in to our new boys. I'll never forget you putting flowers on our car when it was time for our last baby to go to doggy heaven. Their automatic reply if you try to come drop in out of their 2-3 week scheduling window is to go to an emergency vet like "Blue Pearl" which ends up costing you thousands of dollars. I'm sure whoever reads this review will blame covid as it seems to be an easy response for poorly managed businesses. We will be looking for a new vet. read more

I have a 20-year-old cat. I have been coming to Pacifica Pet Hospital for many years - this review is long overdue. This facility is really great. Having taken her to other facilities over the years, by comparison as an owner you can tell that the team is caring and really responsive. I want to especially shout out the vet tech, Karla. She is truly a wonderful caregiver. My elderly cat (who suffers from kidney disease and a heart murmur) needed eye removal (enucleation) due to a scratch that developed into a painful bacterial infection. With my cat's underlying health conditions and age, going under anesthesia is always a risk. Karla compassionately received my cat and carefully explained the procedure. She reassured me and kept me updated every step of the way. She really went above and beyond to support both my cat and I and we are both so grateful. My cat is on day one of recovery from the procedure and in my arms resting as I write this. read more

Please DO NOT take your pet to this hospital. Summary of my story- They left me a voicemail recommending I euthanize my cat who was not dying at all!! Longer version: I adopted a kitten October 2020 and brought her in to see Dr. Choi for her checkup and shots. The first visit went fine but on her 2nd, they gave her a bunch of unnecessary shots because they had not made any copies of the records I'd given them from the adoption agency. Then in February 2021, she started acting overly thirsty, lethargic, and had a weird walk, so I took her back to see Dr. Choi. We did xrays and nothing showed up so he put her on antibiotics and steroids to see if it helped with her symptoms. He asked me to call and let him know about her progress. A few weeks later, I called to report that she wasn't really doing better and asked the receptionist to pass on the message to Dr. Choi and ask him to call me back. He called and left me a voicemail on March 8, 20021, the most important excerpt of which I will quote here (I still have the voicemail saved in case anyone ever challenges me): "My big concern is she actually might have either a congenital leukopenia virus infection or feline infectious peritonitis infection. These 2 can be pretty difficult to treat and most likely impossible to treat. And especially if her condition is not improving, is getting worse, we might need to, unfortunately, and it's a very very terrible thing to say, especially at her age, unfortunately, we might need to consider humane euthanasia. Because both possible conditions that she might have- there's no reliable treatment option available. They just get worse. It's not fair to them and to her. And with her current condition situation, unfortunately, I don't have any good treatment option available for her. And based on the nature of this condition, I would definitely advise humane euthanasia." So after hearing this horrible voicemail, I break down crying and call my friends who tell me to go and get a 2nd opinion and I'm so glad I did!! I took my cat to a neurologist at North Peninsula Veterinary then to Dr. Glahn at Coastal Cat Clinic. Thousands of dollars worth of tests later, it turns out she is a perfectly healthy cat and just has some allergies! Easily treated by allergy medicine and dietary food. I have no idea why Dr. Choi would recommend such extreme measures without first calling to hear about her progress or offering to at least do bloodwork to rule out other possibilities. And to tell me to euthanize my cat via A VOICEMAIL is simply unprofessional. If you want great treatment for your cat, DO NOT go to Dr. Choi!!! read more

This place has very poor customer service and their main priority is making money off your beloved pets. Every time we've taken our dogs here it's been a long, costly process to diagnose what is wrong without an actual solution. They will order test after test for the upsell without any rhyme or reason. The last straw was a dental cleaning. Dr. Choi insisted we have this procedure done even after our short nosed 11 year old dog almost died due to anesthesia. He then promised "light anesthesia". We made appointments to go and he assured us he would be there to aide our worries at drop off. We showed up twice and Dr. Choi is nowhere to be found both times. The receptionist said he wasn't arriving for another hour. We didn't feel comfortable leaving our senior dog for such a procedure without talking with him first, so we left. The receptionist assured us we wouldn't be charged yet we were charged $162 for nothing. The customer service person on the phone threatened us with collections if we didn't pay immediately. She even said Dr. Choi himself insisted on charging us. This Dr. is egotistical and short. He's in it for the money and truly doesn't care about the well-being of pets. read more

First time patients, we took my fiancee's senior cat in for a wellness check and blood draw. Pet Hospital was clean and well maintained, and the staff was very accommodating and friendly. We arrived 30 minutes early and were allowed to wait in the exam room for her cat to adjust and calm down. We saw Dr. Choi, who answered all questions and was very calm with the grouchy senior cat. My fiancee's cat was not eating well, and the medicine and food they prescribed are working for him. We appreciate Dr. Choi's patience with us and the time he took to explain different health scenarios. This is also a very reasonably priced Pet Hospital, and they provided us an itemized list of services allowing us to choose which we could afford. We wanted to get our puppy neutered at the end of last year. Needless to say, we were worried about the whole thing but Pacifica Pet Hospital made it a pleasant experience for us and an easy one for our puppy. We had an initial consultation with Dr. Randle, who was really good at explaining the different studies (pro/con) regarding neutering (depending on breed, gender, age, etc). We were given a quote for the surgery by the staff - which was reasonable, especially in comparison to other places in SF. We decided to go to Pacifica Pet hospital because we felt confident Dr. Randle would do an amazing job and there was no waiting list (a few weeks in the city!). It is also 25 min' away from our home - (much quicker than going to other hospitals- and finding parking- in the city!). She had the operation early morning and we were updated on her condition after the surgery - which went really well and we were able to pick her up in the afternoon. She wagged her tail when she came out! She was given some painkillers for five days and the cone of shame. We ended up giving her only four days of meds as she recovered really quickly (she wanted to play the next morning but alas, no jumping allowed). We went back to have the stitches removed I think about two weeks later and she was all done! We did not use the cone of shame after the first night but got a surgical suit instead (you can find various models online) as she was not really interested in her stitches. It allowed her to sleep and eat without being bothered and we believe it helped speed up her recovery. The staff (front desk, nurses) is really nice and professional too! Thank you so much Mr Randle! Our puppy is now 1 year and 4 months and is in great health but we will definitely go back to this hospital if needed and we have recommended Dr Randle & Pacifica Pet Hospital to a lot of puppy owners we know. read more

We drive from the city (including the time it takes to park, it's actually faster than going to the mission from Glen Park). The care is complete. The staff is friendly. My dog suffers from seizures, tremors, incontinence, neurological disabilities and severe anxiety. He is unable to walk, and would not tolerate an appointment without me present. I waited 2 weeks for an appointment to get his seizure medication refilled, only to be told, the day before, the veterinarian who was scheduled to see him can't because she is immunocompromised. I explained his special circumstance and begged for them to help me somehow. Was told there's nothing they can do. And I should call someone else. No offer to reschedule with another doctor or an outdoor / carside visit. They had no care that my dog could have seizure and not survive. I've had bad experiences with vets who price gouge like crazy. Case in point: When Mokka, my dumbo rat, developed mammary tumors, I took her to Montclair Veterinary Hospital in Oakland where they charged me $80 for an office visit and the vet quoted me $400-$600 in order to remove the tumors that were growing pretty large. Then I called Pacifica Pet Hospital because I heard Dr. Hurlbut is really great with rats and charges a fair fee. He removed four tumors from Mokka for a fraction of the cost I was quoted from Montclair Vet and Mokka recovered within days. When I discovered that Mokka's sister, Latte, also developed a tumor, I didn't hesitate to call Pacifica Pet Hospital to make an appointment with Dr. Hurlbut again. After her surgery, the doctor spoke to me about the procedure and he is a very nice personable kind of guy! He also knows a ton about rats, even attends conference talks about the best medical treatments for preventing rat tumors. read more

If you read through any of my other vet reviews, you'll see how so very particular I am about my dog's health care. When I lived in SF I found some very good vets and a few bad ones -- but the good vets were not so good in the exorbitant fees they charged. So, I looked further down the Peninsula and found a good one in SSF. But when I moved to Pacifica in 2010, and with there being so many vets for a city of this size, I thought it would be great if I could find one closer to home, especially with my dog getting into her senior years and needing more care -- and if there was one that was up to my standards. I did some research and went to some of them for services. Two started out good, but one of them I eventually came to have some reservations about, and the other I found a major problem with, and a third whose reputation was somewhat spotty after having spoken with several former customers. But when someone suggested Pacifica Pet Hospital, a place I drove by every day and wondered about, I had to give them a try. It was one of the best recommendations I had ever received. You get a good feeling when walking into their office, a house-like structure situated on an incline above Highway 1, with a great front desk staff -- one of whom includes Elizabeth, who is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G! -- and wonderful vet techs. And then there is the outstanding Dr. Young Choi. Dr. Choi is the epitomy of kind and soft-spoken, and the ultimate in great bedside manner -- but there is nothing 'soft' whatsoever in his expertise of veterinary medicine. This is a vet who really knows his stuff. And this is where it got even better for my dog. On first examination, he found a malignant tumor under her jaw, where another doctor we had seen only a short time before hadn't. He did the surgery himself, and very successfully, with great results and very little discomfort to my dog. Thanks to Dr. Choi, we got the tumor just in time, and I know that he not only helped her to avoid unnecessary suffering, but prolonged her life. (She's doing just fine.) So I am very happy with Pacifica Pet Hospital and, had I gotten a recommendation of them a few years earlier, I likely would have been taking my dog there back then, even when I lived in SF. I am so comfortable with Dr. Choi, he has a great approach in relating both to me and my dog, and he provides excellent care for her -- and with the great office overall, an all-around great place to do business with. We moved from a reputable and friendly vet office in San Carlos to Pacifica with our sweet little Yorkie - and before we had a chance to select a vet, some weird freak accident befell our little guy. One minute he was running gleefully on the beach in full bore pursuit of a tennis ball. The next moment he wiped out screaming as if he'd been shot, unable to move the bottom half of his body. He was literally dragging his back legs as if he were paralyzed. A nutty pell mell-Abbott and Costello-Keystone Cops-driving and phone search of vets opened on Sundays-ensued, ending with us pulling up to Pacifica Pet Hospital. They were giving shots on Sundays at a dramatically reduced rate - something that meant nothing to me that day - as we were in tears thinking Joe's back was broken. The doctor was incredible. He was very thoughtful in his diagnosis, and took us into the room and showed us Joe's x-rays. I mean, we were upset and skeptical, and not your best clients at this point - and Dr. Hurlbut was a consummate, understanding professional. He was incredibly patient with us and answered all our questions. He took very good care of Joe - and called in a few days to check up on him - and us. I read up on him, and he's very highly regarded by his clients, impeccably educated, a dog lover, and a people person. Practically speaking, Pacifica Pet Hospital offers significantly reduced vaccine shots on Sundays from 9 - 11. $18. a shot. The Humane Society 's prices are only a bit less @ $15. a shot, but their vaccine days are once a month - rather than once a week. I really like this vet, and recommend it to Pacificans. read more

I am very pleased with the medical treatment received by my cat, Pippi. During a long holiday weekend, I scheduled a non-emergency appointment at an emergency vet hospital in Pac Heights for a cut on her side that was not healing. They charged me 500 for blood work, a prescription for anti-anxiety meds, and an office visit and told me she needed surgery to remove the infection. The price for the surgery was going to be an additional 1370- 1750 (depending on the length of the anesthesia) with a 1750 deposit asked for upfront. I decided to get a second opinion at PPH, my regular Dr. Choi. I managed an appointment for the following day, and Dr. Choi confirmed the initial diagnosis. He scheduled the surgery and charged me $1350 for the initial visit and surgery, including a $50 rabies vaccine, some antibiotic and pain reliever meds that he injected until the surgery, and follow-up meds after the surgery. She was released with a cone that she removed immediately, so I made her a onesie to cover her wound. She hid under the bed to heal for nine days (she is partially feral) and only came out to eat. The wound healed perfectly and she is now running around the house playing with her toys. I was especially impressed with Dr. Choi's knowledge of drug therapy, which he injected, and lasted for the length of her convalescence so I did not have to try to pill an uncooperative cat. He also gave me a liquid form of gabapentin that I could put in her food to relax her if I needed to capture her to change her onesie. I was very impressed with the care received by Dr. Choi and highly recommend his medical skills. On another note, when I brought in my elderly cat for a checkup, he noticed teeth and gum issues. Rather than recommending an expensive tooth cleaning for an 18-year-old cat, he mentioned some drops I could put in his water and a cat toothbrush and paste I could buy on Amazon. read more

Dr. Trief is very gracious and family-friendly. She gave us options and let us know the drawbacks to each option (financial and effectiveness). We found her to be cordial and comfortable to be around. Dr. Choi seemed very salesman-like and not client-oriented. He strong-armed my wife into choosing the most expensive (and therefore more beneficial to him) flea treatment without giving her options and the drawbacks to each option. He did this multiple times to her and to me. We spent twice as much on our dog with Dr. Choi as we did with Dr. Trief. The service and care has deteriorated significantly from when I started bringing my dogs to the hospital 10 year ago. Getting appointments takes weeks and they are don't follow up or return messages in a reasonable time frame. My dog recently had a seizure the day after a check-up and blood work and when I called they didn't want to see him and told me to take him to an emergency hospital during rush hour so it took 45 minutes to get there. Then It took over a week to get a results or even a response to the messages I left. When they finally emailed me the blood results they said they had just received them, even though the report was dated 4 days earlier. It is fine as long as you just need to get vaccines, but I expect more from a vet especial since my dogs are older now. read more

I have been a loyal client since 1995 when Dr. Hurlbut treated my rabbits. I was happy with the practice then, and I am happy now, having seen both Dr. Randle and Dr. Choi with my two dogs. Sometimes in a medical practice--veterinary or otherwise--you find that the doctors are great, but the staff is marginal, or the doctors are marginal but the staff is great, and it's a difficult decision whether to stay or go elsewhere. I have never had that problem with Pacifica Pet Hospital. The doctors are both knowledgeable and kind; you get the feeling that they genuinely care for your pets. Just as important, the vet assistants and techs are all friendly and professional, as are the front desk staff. None of these jobs are easy; I know this because I worked them for 13 years at another practice. This hospital gets a 5 star rating for professionalism, kindness and accessibility. On above stated morning our pet developed respiratory distress. Sitter calls this hospital, asked to send video and monitor. Later that morning no call back from hospital.. took upon ourselves to call hospital from abroad, told by Molly, Vet has not reviewed video yet.. will walk it back to Vet, and give call back. I came here because of price point. I was going to another veterinarian in Pacifica allcare for years. I came here as a suggestion from a friend. I had to have my dogs tail amputated. Dr. Choi perform the surgery with no complications. This review is the opposite of somebody else's review, same veterinarians just flipped. I came back here to have a second opinion about skin issues or allergy which I was told from my previous vet allcare, there wasn't any issues. Pacific told said, my dog had Cushing's disease which is very rare. So, I had a 3rd opinion by a specialist and the results were the same thing, Cushing's disease. My dog was so far along that I put her to sleep. I will continue to come here now that I have a new dog not just because of the price point, because of the knowledgeable doctors. read more

I was referred here, but they failed to warn me NOT to see DR. CHOI, because he will pad your bill and he is not hands on. Sure enough, our bill was padded by $135.00 for something HE felt would be needed LATER on. I have never seen a vet do an exam WITHOUT even touching the pet.
