Took a trip down to carmel and discovered this nice restaurant. The view is beautiful and I enjoyed the ambiance. I believe we ordered the Eggs Benedict salmon bagel, pancakes, and the garlic truffle fries. All were a hit!! The serving size was perfect and they were really generous with the garlic truffle fries! Although the service was a bit slow, I didn't mind too much because I was able to take in the breath taking view at the same time. I'd definitely come here again. read more

We booked this place online, looking for a decent, but not decedent place to enjoy an anniversary dinner while we stayed in Carmel. I was a little disappointed when we pulled up and saw it was a hotel restaurant, as this rarely results in great food. We were very happily surprised almost immediately. The wait staff was very friendly, and we ordered a meat and cheese board as an appetizer. The meat and cheese was perfect, everything went together very well, including local honey and nuts. We opted to try the burger, an unusual choice for the ambiance this place provided, but it turned out to be amazing. The wait staff was perfect, the food was great, and the view was spectacular. The view and service were phenomenal and the plant-based tasting menu was delicious, but I was a little disappointed with the desserts. I had a wondeful experience at California Market at Pacific's Edge over the holiday weekend in January. In the winter, it was relatively easy to get a reservation right around sunset, and the hostess sat us at a corner table with fabulous views of the sun setting over the rocky coastline. One of us ordered the vegetarian tasting menu and the other ordered off the regular menu. Our server, Sonja, was very attentive and described each of our dishes when they came out. The Brussels sprouts with truffled honey and beet dish were incredible, seamlessly blending sweet and savory flavors. I think the Brussels sprouts may have been the best that I have ever had to date. We were lucky to be visiting shortly after the Big Sur Foragers Festival, so there were some great mushroom dishes on the menu: the main pasta course and mushroom steak had a nice earthy flavor. It wasn't clear from the description that the pasta had cheese on it: this wasn't a problem for us, but I think the serving staff should make a point of mentioning it since some people do not eat dairy. All of the savory dishes on the menu were exquisite. Unfortunately, the desserts we had were quite disappointing. They did not have the plant-based dessert that evening, so we tried both the peanut butter chocolate dessert and the pear chocolate almond dessert. Both desserts were beautifully presented, however they both suffered from the same problem: they did not taste strongly of any of their ingredients. The peanut butter, chocolate, pear, and hazelnut flavors that we were expecting simply were not there. In addition, the cheesecake ice cream served on top of the Almond tart was very icy and quite unenjoyable to eat. Despite the lackluster end to the meal, this does not detract from my desire to come back to the restaurant or to recommend that others try it out. It's very rare for a vegetarian to have a really nice tasting menu, let alone with this kind of view and this kind of service. I will definitely come back next time in the area, but I will save some room to have dessert somewhere else! read more

Just the view itself is worth a visit! There I was sipping on glasses of Billecart-Salmon Brut Rose, soaking in the BREATHTAKING view of the waves hitting Carmel rocks, while watching the sun gradually setting from our seated window table! As the evening passed, we were pampered royally and leisurely we awaited for our four course meal! Beautiful was the presentation of each and every plate as they arrived at our table! But the taste of most of the dishes were far off from the rave reviews I've read! An extraordinary meal it was not! I will say that their "Monterey Bay Red Abalone" was OUTSTANDING, the abalone was tender and the tart fixings accompanied it well! Then came my "Wild Mushroom Soup", yes there is the taste of mushrooms but it was oh so BLAND! For my entree, I was excited of their "Sonoma Duck", I sawed my knife through the OVERCOOKED duck - gave up after chewing two pieces! The saving grace was their "Home made Trio Ice Cream" for our dessert, I was most fond of the vanilla scoop, real CREAMY! With all that being said, I still enjoyed my time there! What a conundrum. The reason you should come here is to sit outside on the deck and drink in the drop-dead gorgeous view. Do so in the morning because you've no doubt got other plans for the rest of your day and spending your morning here might just make your day. But know the limitations. Being a restaurant that's part of a hotel (in this case, the very upscale Hyatt Carmel Highlands) the prices will be excessive and the food mediocre. But eggs, toast, and potatoes aren't ridiculously priced here and they're well executed. My beef is with the coffee, which I found undrinkable on two separate occasions, and coffee is essential to my enjoyment of the morning. This bitter brew messed with that. So come here in the morning for tea and breakfast and if you're no fan of bitter coffee arrive with your paper Starbucks cup already in hand. Without question, this is a destination spot for a Carmel breakfast with Yankee Point views (heat lamps are there, if needed). The views might help to wake me up but really? I want both great views and a great, refillable cuppa joe. Until that can happen, California Market Restaurant presents, for me, a real conundrum. read more

Just past checkin you can't miss this restaurant that offers panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean. All tables have magnificent views. The food is locally sourced and always seasonal. We shared scallops with cauliflower and broccoli, the seasonal pasta wash a mushroom ravioli with blistered baby tomatoes that were so sweet and tender. Splurged on some classic creme brûlée as well which was great. Prices are high but would you expect otherwise? They offer amazing views and the food is great. I hate writing bad reviews coming from a decade in the restaurant industry, but this has to be done. My girlfriend set this up for my birthday, we arrived and had to wait for a seat next to a window, so we sat at the bar for a few mins. Once we sat at the table, it was about 1pm. Ok, so at the point we're hungry so my girlfriend orders a quick simple app for her main lunch (thinking it wouldn't take longer). It's now 2pm and we still don't have any food. Nobody has even came by the table to let us know there is a delay the whole time or replenish our drinks from the bar. So we finally had enough and started asking everyone who walked by, our server hardly came around. After I said something to the server, our food suddenly appeared. My plate was scorching hot. Having worked in restaurants for many years, I know that my food was sitting under the heat lamp in the kitchen for a very long time. I ordered a burger, the bun was crusty and hard as a rock. Everything was completely dried, I couldn't even eat the patty alone. I was hungover from the night before, had driven 90 mins to this place and was starving. The server says he would "get us a complementary drink"...... You think I care about that? I want food. We asked for the check immediately, which took another 10-15 mins..... Server took off the burger from the bill... He should have gone to the manager and let them know about the whole ordeal and voided the entire tab. It wasn't much overall, but it's all about the principal here. Of course the server got a fat 0 for tip and we were on our way out. I had to say something to the manager because I know she was not aware. She was very nice and apologetic about what had happened and offered to make it right by inviting us to come again for dinner or the next day. We were only in the Carmel area for a night with other plans so we didn't take the offer but anyhow, even if we did have time, I wouldn't want to come back here. I believe to have fine dining experience in front of a beautiful landscape is the best treat, Pacific's Edge is one of those places. There's very large wine list. We picked a Chardonnay from a local winery called Lucia. It was decent. Food was absolutely wonderful. We ordered oyster and soft crab for appetizer and Coriander crusted pan seared tuna, Seared Dayboat Scallops, and wild mushroom as main courses, all of them are fantastic. We stayed at the Hyatt hotel and decided to eat at this restaurant for lunch since there's really no other place nearby. There were some previous poor reviews so we kept our expectations low, but we had great service and really liked our food! We ordered the breakfast sandwich and Spinach Berry salad. Those potatoes were bomb and the fruit in the salad were delicious. The view, of course, is amazing and made the price worth it.
