This place has absolutely gorgeous views! We just went for lunch this past week and loved it. We usually have lunch in Carmel-by-the-Sea, but this came up on Yelp when we did a lunch search and we are so happy we went a little farther south to try this place out! The food was good, the service was okay, but the view is definitely what makes the experience at California Market memorable. We didn't have a reservation, so all the outdoor tables were taken, but we thought we were lucky when we got a seat inside right by the window. But, by the end of the meal I was uncomfortably hot and sweaty because they don't have any sort of air conditioning or fans or even a door open for a little breeze The food was pretty standard Californian cuisine and I don't have any food item I would really rave about. However, it really is worth it to just go for the view and if we go back we will remember to make a reservation so we can sit outside with the hope of feeling some sort of coastal breeze, and maybe just do a few cocktails and an appetizer instead of an entire meal. I would say this place rounds out to a 4-star experience: 5-stars for the view, 3-stars for the service and food. read more

Upscale but never snobby. Excellent food with an amazing view. We visit the California Market regularly. We love their clam chowder and entrees, which are always fresh and delicious. Bread and rolls are wonderful. Wouldn't be surprised if they are baked on the premises. Staff is always courteous and helpful. Five stars for the exceptional value of this establishment. My girlfriend took me to Pacific's Edge for my birthday. We were greeted by a friendly host and, as promised, since we arrived at 6:30 pm, we were able to snag an ocean view table. The views were impressive, but the food and service were sorely lacking. A steak knife was not even available at the restaurant for my filet mignon, which is entirely unacceptable for a restaurant of this purported caliber. Also, three failed attempts at bringing me a poor quality knife, two of which were absolutely filthy, with no apologies and slow haughty responses. I have had better 7 dollar burgers in the Bay Area!! Definitely good for a drink and relaxing in the lounge, but it would be better to take your money elsewhere for dinner, perhaps in downtown Carmel-by-the-Sea for half the price. read more

I was expecting a lot better. The host was extremely blunt that she did not want to be there. Was very rude and not welcoming, if it wasn't Easter i probably would have stopped there and turned around. The view was beautiful, our server was sweet but didn't come very often to check on us, food didn't meet our expectations, was very "Blah".... So we did take them up on their offer to comp our next meal there, but it really wasn't worth it. They refused to comp our drinks, even though we only had 1 each, and once the waiter found out we were being comped, he was MIA for the rest of the dinner because he probably assumed we weren't going to tip him well. We are usually really good tippers though, and, had he hung around, we probably would have ordered more drinks and he would have received a better tip. But, alas, tips are not mandatory, so you only get what you work for. The bus/bread guy was awesome though, so we gave him $40 in cash and left a tip reflecting the service we received from the actual waiter on the card. They did earn one more star because we were actually able to enjoy our meal this time, and it wasn't horrible...but it by no means was worth what they charge for it. The meat was overcooked, vegetables were burned and the service was subpar, so 2 starts fits them. Overall, it was just MEH...I wouldn't waste my time here. Even if it was free again. read more

Very disappointing to say the least. This restaurant is a dying place that once was one of the best around. I guess being open from 6pm -9pm should of been the first clue. My must say my filet was good, but at $60.00 it should of been excellent. My wife and daughter decided to share the sea bass which upon arrival was floating in a dismal sauce with grapes around the fish???? Sent back as not desirable, she ordered the filet as both were hungry. The filet was brought to the table rare, not medium rare as requested. Our waiter was attentive, yet asked if she would like then to sear in an attempt to correct. I don't think so, as I don't believe the chain steak houses would even offer. No apologies what so every in this half empty dying restaurant. Lastly, the very nice bottle of wine we brought with us that was half finished, no bag was offered, so we walked to our $800.00 per night room for one last evening of three at the Highlands Inn. In 2012 we had a terrible experience, although return several times over the next few years due to the location which in second to none. Only wish they would refine what was once dynamic and truly show they value each and every guest. My wife, daughter and I had dinner this evening at the Pacific Edge restaurant. Alex our waiter was very attentive and performed very well. The rod was good overall, a 8.5 out of 10. Our disappointment was the sommelier this evening. First he insulted us as e went it f his way to ask if we understood the corkage policy. Policy??? We brought a $800.00 bottle of wine with us. Dd he need to go over the corkage policy with us especially in an insulting way? To add insult to injury, we asked him for a bag to place the reminder of the wine that was in our bottle in a bag enforce leaving. His reply, we are out of bags. Really, you expect me to believe that an high end restaurant can come with a bag for our wine bottle after spending $300.00 on dinner and the $40.00 corkage? I said nothing, and mentioned to my wife that when Alex comes ack, I am going to ask him for a bag, which he delivered without hesitation. When I asked to speak to his manager, I ended up with a gentlemen, that was cold, rude and offered nothing but "I will take care of it" Not the response I expected at a high end restaurant. So, here's the thing. Usually when you have a restaurant with a great view, the food is so-so. Or you have a restaurant with great food, but no view to speak of. Not so with Pacific's Edge. A fantastic view of the North California Pacific coast and really good food. My wife and I enjoyed a very nice dinner with a spectacular sunset view. Service was prompt and attentive without being obtrusive. The food was outstanding. My wife started with the California Salad and I had the Beet Salad. Both were very fresh and tasty. For entrees, my wife had the Sea Bass and I had the Salmon. Again, very well prepared and seasoned, with delicious sides. We finished up with Bread Pudding and 30 year Tawny Port as we watched the sun set over the Pacific. A meal and setting we will never forget. Overall, a great dining experience. I've hesitated to write this because I can just hear the people who think I'm an oldie who can't change with the times (and they'd be wrong). The Highlands Inn has been in my life for about 40 years; we live less than an hour away. I remember it when the decor was Highland themed. When they changed that to a more neutral style, I was OK with it, because the core qualities remained. The Pacific's Edge was THE place for a special occasion; I celebrated my 40th birthday there. When they opened the separate California Market, it was a frequent lunch destination...perfect in every way. We own a few timeshare weeks through Interval International, so when it became a Hyatt timeshare, we jumped at the chance to trade a week for a stay there a few years ago. It was fine but not the quality of the properties we own. We noticed they had closed the California Market and expanded its menu into that of Pacific's Edge (and raised the prices)...turning the former CA Market into a sales center for Hyatt. My husband just celebrated his 80th birthday last week, and we invited a friend to join us at Pacific's Edge for what we hoped would be a special experience. The evening started in the great room where a noisy cheese and wine party (for owners, I'd guess) was breaking up. There was ghastly live music (a piano player who could not sing, or play his piano in time with his background track). Just horrible. Our reservation was honored on time, the hostess was very nice, and our table was great, because the billion-dollar view is the main draw...but no longer anything else. The noise permeated the dining room. The meals were WAY overpriced and poor quality. House wine was $10 a glass. A no-frills dinner for 3 was $170 (and one of the 'dinners' was two appetizers; my dinner upset my stomach). The waitress was attentive enough, but stiff. We came away sadly realizing that Hyatt has finally removed all traces of the grace, warmth, and hospitality the Highlands Inn once had, and we decided we would never visit it again (or stay at a Hyatt). You can get a great view from Point Lobos or the pullout just below the Inn. And a night's stay at the neighboring Tickle Pink is as delightful now as it was 35 years ago. Goodbye, Highlands Inn. This place gets 5 stars for the food, service and incredible sommelier, Mark! He is soooo good...we are still craving the Dirt Worshiper, thank you very much! The setting of the place is just to die for and of course, would be a wonderful complement to any food, but particularly to what pacific's edge has to offer. I really enjoyed their protein dishes. The lamb was perfect and the tenderloin was as well. I had the baked pasta and unfortunately, despite it's monstrous portion, it didn't really deliver like I expected, it was honestly a little bland, good but a little bland. But as you can see, that doesn't spoil my perception of the place seeing as how I gave them 5 stars. We came for my parent's anniversary and they were really sweet about it, they had decorated the table which was a nice gesture. For desert we had the chocolate souffle and if there's one thing you order when you're here, let it be that (other than the Dirt Worshiper). My advice is to order a protein when you go because I think they take true pride in that. And you must, must talk to Mark and ask him for The Dirt Worshiper, trust me, you will NOT be sorry!!! read more

You pay for the view. The food was a bit disappointing (I'm from near SF so I have many choices of great 4 star restaurants). I don't know where the chef went to (if he/she even did) culinary school, but some of the stuff he came up with was mind boggling. Ingredients he put in the dishes didn't complement; my fiance took one bit of his dessert and pushed it away. We had the five course meal and after the first course, I felt queazy. One good thing about this restaurant are the many complementary chef dishes. Usually you walk out of 4 star restaurants feeling content, not full. We walked out of this restaurant feeling FULL. Be prepared to stay there for a long time (3 hours) if you get the 5 course meal! I would recommend doing a la carte because all the dishes, except 1 on the 5 course menu was a disaster. read more

my girlfriend and i recently had lunch here. the location is spectacular. the food was excellent and was good value. i was, however, disappointed by the service. the deck was not full but we waited a full 20 minutes after sitting down before we were even asked what we'd like to drink. eventually, the hostess did address the delay but chose to blame us for confusing them by moving 10 feet from one table to a different table. i expect a little more when i'm paying $70 for lunch. disappointing. read more

My wife and I went here for our 5 year anniversary, chosen partly because of the great reviews here on Yelp and also because of a recommendation from a family member. The view from our table right next to the window was gorgeous. That's about the only good thing that came out of this experience. The very next day, I had a very bad case of diarrhea which lasted for about 5 days. Here's what we ordered: heirloom tomatoe appetizer, lobster appetizer, braised beef short ribs entree, duck breast entree, and the chocolate sphere for dessert. My wife and I shared everything with the exception of the duck breast entree which leads me to believe that was what caused me getting sick. I did call the restaurant to complain and of course they said that they had not received any other calls with similar circumstances. They said they would be sending me a gift certificate which they did, but the amount I received was not even 25 percent of the final bill, pretty disappointing. Aside from getting sick, I felt that the food was pretty mediocre, I probably wouldn't go back even had I not gotten sick, now I definitely won't be returning. The restaurant's manager was apologetic and his intentions were okay, but my expectation of compensation for this experience obviously differs from his. read more

This place has endurance in it's quality which I like. I first came here in 2002 for christmas and the service is still equal. Outstanding food which was cooked perfectly. The staff was very attentive and accomendated us no matter. The food was in small portions but hey, that's what fine dining is all about! I recommend the scallops as they where perfectly cooked with an amazing glaze on top.The restaurant itself is located in the Hyatt Carmel Highlands next to the beautiful pacific ocean. I recommend coming here around 6 as that is when the sun starts to set. Sure the bill was $210 for 3 people but it's still a once in a lifetime experience! GO HYATT! read more

Great place for a Sunday breakfast on a rainy morning with an awesome view of Yankee Point. The Belgian waffle with spiced fruit and warm maple syrup was just the right choice to get us in the holiday spirit for Christmas shopping in Carmel. The fresh fruit plate was an unexpected delight. I just finished having dinner at Pacific's Edge restaurant to celebrate our anniversary. What an overall lousy experience! Starting with the hostess seating us at an upper level table where the glare off the ocean was so bright (7:00p) I couldn't stand it. Mentioned it to the hostess and she agreed, yes, it's bright and walked away. Didn't offer to seat us at another table. So the message was loud and clear, if you are seated at a table with considerable glare, put on your sunglasses and suck it up! We were told by the manager that lowering the blind wouldn't be done as "that is why people come here, for the view". Obviously not for the customer service. We brought with us a bottle of champagne to celebrate our anniversary, we were told it is a $40 corkage fee. So instead of buying a bottle of their champagne we chose to get a glass of wine. The food was so overpriced I almost choked. An 8oz. filet mignon for $56??????? Ruth Criss Steakhouse doesn't charge that. The entrees we got were average in quality and even though the manager gave us dessert, when we asked for decaf coffee, they chose to give the fancy French pressed coffee (which we didn't ask for) and charged $17 for it. Needless to say that will our last dining experience at this overpriced, underwhelmed food quality, with the attitude of "just suck it up if you don't like the glare" with really poor customer service. We had dinner the night before in downtown Carmel at a more casual seafood restaurant and the experience was 5 star all around. I would NEVER recommend coming to Pacific's Edge unless you enjoy spending way too money for poor customer service, mediocre food and attitude. read more

The view of the ocean/sunset is exceptional. The wine list is also very deep and our service was really good. But the food was simply OK. My wife's caesar salad was yellowish and the dressing was pretty average. I had the rib eye and it was OK -- not great. For the price and their ratings, I was expecting to be really impressed. This is a great place to go if you want some cocktails around sunset, but I would look elsewhere if you want a memorable meal. Try Casanovas in downtown Carmel. read more

Fantastic food with an even better view. We recommend combining eating here and staying up the road at the Tickle Pink Inn. The Tuna Tartare was amazing as an appetizer, especially paired with the caprese salad. For dinner we had the halibut and the scallops. The halibut was a little dry but the scallops were to die for. I have never had scallops that big and still be so tender. Great wine selection and a very knowledgeable waiter. We would come back for another special occasion. read more

The Pacific Edge Restaurant has a five-star view and a one-star menu, so I reluctantly give it two stars overall. A five-course, prix fix Thanksgiving dinner was $95 per person, and included an automatic mandatory 20% tip. We ordered two bottles of wine, which brought our total bill to $900 for six people. Although the panoramic view of the Pacific is spectacular (and we enjoyed a beautiful sunset and afterglow), the ambient noise of 100 people trying to talk over the sound of a pianist playing an amplified digital keyboard was horrendous. For anyone seated at a table for two or four, the sound was tolerable, but at a round table for six, the ambient noise of chatter and music made it impossible to speak to anyone across the table from you. Thus, the only table conversation possible was with the person on either side of you. Our first clue of what was in store for us from the menu came with cold rolls and butter served after our wine order arrived and during the time our dinner order was being prepared. I requested warm rolls, and after initial hesitation, the waiter grudgingly did return with some mediocre warmed-up rolls that turned out to be as tough and tasteless as the original. Most of the appetizers were mediocre, although one of them, an arugula salad, was quite good. Our entrée choice was Prime Rib, Sea Bass or Traditional Turkey dinner. The Sea Bass was the best of the three, and those choosing it "licked the platter clean," so to speak. The prime rib was so tough and over cooked, our two guests who had selected it, ate hardly any of it and requested "doggy bags" (and they really intended to feed the remnants to their dogs). The turkey entree did not arrive at the table hot enough and was so tough, over cooked and tasteless that I sent it back -- requesting a warmer and juicier portion. When the replacement came, it was no better than the original. Included with the turkey dinner were some overcooked vegetables (I couldn't tell from looking at them or eating them exactly what they were), an inedible, tasteless stuffing, and passable puréed potatoes. The only thing I ate was the potatoes. There was no cranberry sauce with the turkey, so I asked the waiter to bring me a portion. The waiter told me the only cranberry sauce on the premises was for the kitchen staff as they ate turkey remnants, but he did return eventually with a small portion of runny pseudo cranberry sauce (not as good as Ocean Spray). The two desserts we selected were the pumpkin tart and the crème brulée. Although the pumpkin tart was passable, the crème brulée tasted like bread pudding sprinkled with dry oatmeal granola. The coffee was individually brewed and excellent. The bottom line: this is an overpriced, mediocre restaurant with a million-dollar view that suffers from a mediocre chef and a noisy environment not suitable for leisurely conversation. It is obvious that this restaurant is not catering to the older, affluent restaurant patrons (we live in the Highlands only 700 feet away), but is trying, like the Rio Grill in Carmel to attract a younger hip crowd. To be as successful as the Rio Grill in this regard, the Pacific Edge needs a larger bar where singles can rub elbows and shout in each other ears over the incessant din. Older affluent diners seeking a warm quieter atmosphere and a true four-star menu will not find it at Pacific Edge. They will, however, find it in downtown Carmel at Grasings Continental Cuisine or Andre's Bouchée restaurant. read more

I specifically wanted to write this review to highlight how we greatly appreciated our waiter's assistant, Juan, throughout our dining experience. We stayed at the Tickle Pink Inn right up the hill from the Pacific's Edge at Highlands Inn. When we arrived on Saturday evening, on New Years Eve weekend, we had wine and cheese at the reception at Tickle Pink. We met a few people who actually ordered room service from Pacific's Edge so we decided to give it a try. I had a steak and my husband had fish. It was DELICIOUS! We are not fans of room service but because Tickle Pink does not offer dinner we were delighted and the price was perfectly reasonable. Now the BAD experience.... We made reservations for 8:00 for the New Year's Eve five course dinner. Based on our "room service dinner" we were so excited! We arrived and were escorted to a corner table with absolutely no elbow room right next to the service buffet where they serve iced water, etc.... We politely asked to be moved to another open table next to the window. Our waiter obliged. The hostess then came to our table and asked if we "checked in yet" and what was the last name on our reservation. It was embarrassing to say the least. After a lengthy wait, we were asked if we would like wine. We ordered a very nice Italian red. My husband wanted champagne which was to be included in our inclusive dinner price. His champagne arrived after the 2nd course came. (Late wouldn't you say?) He was only approached one more time for the champagne during dinner. It's New Year's Eve people! The five course dinner was beautifully presented but was slight to say the least. Nothing to write home about. We each chose a different entree in the 5 courses so that we could experience the flavors and pairings with (empty) glasses of wine and champagne. The portions were so small that we ended up wishing for a pizza or SOMETHING when we got back to hotel. For dessert we ordered Irish Coffee with the dessert presentation. The coffee ice cream was the only hit I would write home about. This was a HUGE $700.00 DISAPPOINTMENT! I tried to call the restaurant upon returning home. I called and expressed my disappointment on January 3rd. The reservationist transferred my call to the restaurant manager. I left a polite message to tell them how disappointed we were. NO ONE EVER CALLED ME BACK. Today is the 16th of January and still nothing. This is my first Yelp review. I had to let Pacific's Edge know this way because the lack of response has finally driven me to this social effort. We are coming back for the AT&T Pro Am in February but won't be back to Pacific's Edge. There are too many other restaurants in Carmel that by far surpass this experience especially for close to $700.00 for a dinner with wine. If we come back for New Year's in 2013 we will be dining elsewhere for sure. The only reason I gave 2 stars is because one of them is for the room service meal. Sorry! read more

Look, you know it might be a mistake to come here when the number of dollar signs is higher than the number of stars on Yelp, I'm just saying. The dollar signs certainly didn't disappoint. Went for Easter Brunch with my girlfriend. View was spectacular (giving 2 stars for the view), service and food were less spectacular (1 star for both). We were the third party seated, but probably the 10th party served. We watched party after party get seated with drink orders taken without so much as a glance. Once we got drinks, the service was much improved. Food was pretty good, but not $75 per person good. The coffee was ok but not $5/cup good. The Bloody Mary and mimosa were decent, but not $30 decent. The cherry on top was a 21% included gratuity....for a party of TWO??? This part was utterly ridiculous, especially for the service. I understand included gratuity for parties of 6+, but not for 2, and not some arbitrary high number like 21%, and not for mediocre service to start out. Look Hyatt, if you guys want to charge for the view, that's fine. But let your patrons know before they sit down, and don't disguise it as obnoxiously high included gratuity and overpriced coffee, alcohol and food. If you the reader wants to spend $250 for a 2-person buffet, 1 drink per person, coffee, and mandatory gratuity, be my guest. I'll be advising any interested brunch goers otherwise. If you're going to charge $250 for brunch for 2 people, it had better be the best brunch I've ever been to. read more

As mentioned in other reviews, the service at this restaurant is very poor. The waitress who served us was very rude. when I asked a question before ordering, she told me how everyone is professional at the restaurant and shut me down from any further conversation. This waitress had a German accent and treated me like I was a private in the German army. That woman should not be a waitress anywhere. Her behavior ruined the meal for us at this restaurant. Had dinner there last night with my girlfriend for her birthday. My review is going to sound nit-picky but for what this place pretends to be, sloppy service and mediocre food is not acceptable. First, we felt rushed to order...there is never a good reason for this. I was asked if I was ready to order, and I said I wanted to wait, three times. We ordered an appetizer and wanted to enjoy the sunset before ordering our entree, this apparently did not fit in to our server's agenda. Our appetizer arrived and was very disappointing. (The server asked "can I bring you guys anything else?" I can assure my girlfriend is not a guy. The tuna tartar was maybe one and a half ounces total. I understand including caviar justified the $18 price tag but why was the caviar dry and crunchy? Is this a technique I am not familiar with? If this was intentional it should be on the menu as such. In decades of fine dining I have never been served caviar that crunched like tiny cheerios with no milk. When ordering entrees I asked what the lamb was served with, I was told vegetables. I asked what kind and the response was "assorted". The server mentioned it was served with squash, an item I did not prefer. He graciously offered mashed potatoes instead. I accepted. I did not realize that the lentils, yogurt and curry pickled leeks were also going to be left off the plate . Why? I only mentioned the squash. (My menu was removed while we were eating our appetizer so I had no reference other than the knowledge of my server) We do not drink wine or alcohol so my only beverage was water. My glass emptied and I watched as my server passed my table at least 8 times without offering a refill; clearly looking at the table. My glass was completely empty. Empty with no other beverage at all. This is so lazy it's hard to imagine. My glass was refilled only when my date asked for a refill of her beverage (asked, her empty glass did not prompt an offer). When our appetizer was cleared the server took my date's appetizer knife and left all other appetizer silver on the table for the rest of the meal. The entree silver was brought in the server's hand with no service towel or mis en place, clutched and imparting hand oils, placed on the table with the appetizer silver. Additionally, the straw wrapper for my date's beverage sat on the table during the entire meal. The aged steak was good, the duck was acceptable. The sauce I was asked if I wanted on the side (I assumed it was squash related as it was during that exchange the SOS option was offered) was not a sauce at all but a glaze. Glazes should be glazed, otherwise they are just unfinished syrups. It was like putting maple syrup on my duck breast. Very poorly done. After refusing dessert menus our check was dropped. I was not offered coffee service and I did not ask for the check. At no point was there acknowledgement that we were there for a special occasion even though I noted that on my reservation (I wasn't looking for a free dessert but past experience shows a candle in a small cookie or some token is usually appropriate). Fancy, sophisticated, romantic restaurant with ceiling-high windows to gaze out at the spectacular ocean view. I would have given them 5 stars just for their delicious 5 course meal (i think i remember 5) that my boyfriend and I enjoyed on Valentine's Day this year, except we had to wait for an hour to be seated. Although it was an understandable freak mix up between our reservation and another patron's reservation, it resulted in us waiting over an hour to be seated, on top of the fact that we had already driven an hour and a half from Mountain View to get there. We had reservations at 8pm and were seated around 9:15pm. However, they still get 4 stars since they gave us an assortment of wines (a glass for each course) to compensate for the wait. Excellent food, excellent wine, excellent ambiance and breathtaking views...I highly recommend eating around sunset. Reserve in advance. The mix up and wait that kept us starving was a little disappointing, especially on Valentine's Day, but by the end of the evening, everything was worth the wait. read more

We chose this place based on the reviews and the fact that we had a restaurant.com gift cert. It was a cozy dining room tucked away on a mountain with large windows over looking the ocean. 5 stars for ambiance. wait staff was friendly and attentive and new the specials. They kept the drinks full, and the bread was steaming hot served with chilled butter. The hottest bread I've ever been served actually. It bordered on a little too hot to touch. We came for lunch, and the menu was not overwhelming but still offered variety. They serve organic lettuce, another 5 star! Hubby ordered the fish tacos and I had the burger. Both of us chose fries, we were in a mood. Don't judge. HAHA Tacos were LOADED with fresh beer battered fish. Seriously, amazing flavor. Piled with fresh salsa, sauce and the fish wasn't cheap cuts. There was halibut and swordfish in abundance. My burger was above average. Meat was cooked to order and was juicy and flavorful. The fries were average. But hang on, I forgot to mention the appetizer we ordered. HOLY COW. The best calamari ever! Served with a pesto aioli. Fresh, tender, melt in your mouth delicious. They didn't skimp on portions either. More food than 2 could eat. The calamari easily could accomodate 4 people. We will definitely be back. Gift cert, or no, this place was awesome. read more

This was - hands down - one of the best meals I ever had. Every bite was perfect. The chef is a GENIUS. Brilliant brussel sprout salad, the best scallops I have ever eaten, abalone appetizer is a MUST TRY. The service is fantastic -- waiters and the rest of the staff extremely attentive... The views are spectacular!!!! Oh -- and the desserts are OFF THE CHARTS. Do NOT leave without trying the bread pudding.
