As mentioned in other reviews, the service at this restaurant is very poor. The waitress who served us was very rude. when I asked a question before ordering, she told me how everyone is professional at the restaurant and shut me down from any further conversation. This waitress had a German accent and treated me like I was a private in the German army. That woman should not be a waitress anywhere. Her behavior ruined the meal for us at this restaurant. Had dinner there last night with my girlfriend for her birthday. My review is going to sound nit-picky but for what this place pretends to be, sloppy service and mediocre food is not acceptable. First, we felt rushed to order...there is never a good reason for this. I was asked if I was ready to order, and I said I wanted to wait, three times. We ordered an appetizer and wanted to enjoy the sunset before ordering our entree, this apparently did not fit in to our server's agenda. Our appetizer arrived and was very disappointing. (The server asked "can I bring you guys anything else?" I can assure my girlfriend is not a guy. The tuna tartar was maybe one and a half ounces total. I understand including caviar justified the $18 price tag but why was the caviar dry and crunchy? Is this a technique I am not familiar with? If this was intentional it should be on the menu as such. In decades of fine dining I have never been served caviar that crunched like tiny cheerios with no milk. When ordering entrees I asked what the lamb was served with, I was told vegetables. I asked what kind and the response was "assorted". The server mentioned it was served with squash, an item I did not prefer. He graciously offered mashed potatoes instead. I accepted. I did not realize that the lentils, yogurt and curry pickled leeks were also going to be left off the plate . Why? I only mentioned the squash. (My menu was removed while we were eating our appetizer so I had no reference other than the knowledge of my server) We do not drink wine or alcohol so my only beverage was water. My glass emptied and I watched as my server passed my table at least 8 times without offering a refill; clearly looking at the table. My glass was completely empty. Empty with no other beverage at all. This is so lazy it's hard to imagine. My glass was refilled only when my date asked for a refill of her beverage (asked, her empty glass did not prompt an offer). When our appetizer was cleared the server took my date's appetizer knife and left all other appetizer silver on the table for the rest of the meal. The entree silver was brought in the server's hand with no service towel or mis en place, clutched and imparting hand oils, placed on the table with the appetizer silver. Additionally, the straw wrapper for my date's beverage sat on the table during the entire meal. The aged steak was good, the duck was acceptable. The sauce I was asked if I wanted on the side (I assumed it was squash related as it was during that exchange the SOS option was offered) was not a sauce at all but a glaze. Glazes should be glazed, otherwise they are just unfinished syrups. It was like putting maple syrup on my duck breast. Very poorly done. After refusing dessert menus our check was dropped. I was not offered coffee service and I did not ask for the check. At no point was there acknowledgement that we were there for a special occasion even though I noted that on my reservation (I wasn't looking for a free dessert but past experience shows a candle in a small cookie or some token is usually appropriate). The view was great and the staff pleasant. It was pretty obvious the food quality was not a concern to management and whoever is in charge of service training, well, needs some training. The sunset was beautiful. I f you are a tourist, go, spend a bunch of money, enjoy the view. If you are a local, avoid at all costs. read more

Fancy, sophisticated, romantic restaurant with ceiling-high windows to gaze out at the spectacular ocean view. I would have given them 5 stars just for their delicious 5 course meal (i think i remember 5) that my boyfriend and I enjoyed on Valentine's Day this year, except we had to wait for an hour to be seated. Although it was an understandable freak mix up between our reservation and another patron's reservation, it resulted in us waiting over an hour to be seated, on top of the fact that we had already driven an hour and a half from Mountain View to get there. We had reservations at 8pm and were seated around 9:15pm. However, they still get 4 stars since they gave us an assortment of wines (a glass for each course) to compensate for the wait. Excellent food, excellent wine, excellent ambiance and breathtaking views...I highly recommend eating around sunset. Reserve in advance. The mix up and wait that kept us starving was a little disappointing, especially on Valentine's Day, but by the end of the evening, everything was worth the wait. read more

We chose this place based on the reviews and the fact that we had a restaurant.com gift cert. It was a cozy dining room tucked away on a mountain with large windows over looking the ocean. 5 stars for ambiance. wait staff was friendly and attentive and new the specials. They kept the drinks full, and the bread was steaming hot served with chilled butter. The hottest bread I've ever been served actually. It bordered on a little too hot to touch. We came for lunch, and the menu was not overwhelming but still offered variety. They serve organic lettuce, another 5 star! Hubby ordered the fish tacos and I had the burger. Both of us chose fries, we were in a mood. Don't judge. HAHA Tacos were LOADED with fresh beer battered fish. Seriously, amazing flavor. Piled with fresh salsa, sauce and the fish wasn't cheap cuts. There was halibut and swordfish in abundance. My burger was above average. Meat was cooked to order and was juicy and flavorful. The fries were average. But hang on, I forgot to mention the appetizer we ordered. HOLY COW. The best calamari ever! Served with a pesto aioli. Fresh, tender, melt in your mouth delicious. They didn't skimp on portions either. More food than 2 could eat. The calamari easily could accomodate 4 people. We will definitely be back. Gift cert, or no, this place was awesome. read more

This was - hands down - one of the best meals I ever had. Every bite was perfect. The chef is a GENIUS. Brilliant brussel sprout salad, the best scallops I have ever eaten, abalone appetizer is a MUST TRY. The service is fantastic -- waiters and the rest of the staff extremely attentive... The views are spectacular!!!! Oh -- and the desserts are OFF THE CHARTS. Do NOT leave without trying the bread pudding. The only reason for the 3 stars was the service. The food was fantastic and the view spectacular. The server thought way too much of himself but was slow. The Sommelier helped us pick out a great wine that went with both of our entrees then we never saw him again. He went to all three tables around us and poured their wine but not ours. He clearly ignored us. In fact the server didn't pick up on this either. Sorry but for $300+ for dinner, I'd like my wine poured for me. Call me crazy. They were slow to clear our dinner plates and took so long with the check we went to the host stand to pay. We also told the GM of our experience and gave us his card, apologized profusely and asked us to send him a letter. He never did anything with the check. You couldn't pick up our dessert and coffee?? I know this restaurant has lots of glowing reviews, so it has a huge reputation to live up to-but it is that good. The service was outstanding and fast. Great menu. Large wine list with good variety in both price and varietal. We had an abalone appetizer, and an heirloom tomato salad to start, followed by mushroom ravioli and local striped bass for the entrees. The presentations were perfect and creative. The flavors were fantastic. The pastry chef gets double kudos. That salted peanut bar with chocolate ganache and shortbread was out of this world. This place is expensive, but a treat. The only negative that I could mention is that it was easier for me to acquire a reservation through open table than to get one over the phone. As a hotel guest, I called from my room phone and left voice mail, called the front desk-who said vm would be checked-but was not. The view was great but the food and the service were ok. We sat all the way in the back to avoid the noise because we had a baby so the view was semi-blocked by a green roof. We ordered the tuna tartare and ceviche for appetizer and short ribs and rib chop for main course. Both appetizers were very small portioned and didn't have any wow factor. The same can be said for the two main courses. The short rib was bland and dry while its sauce was very salty. The rib chop was a bit too salty and not worth $62. We had told them in advance we were coming to celebrate our wedding anniversary but they didn't bring us anything as pictured by some on here. Lastly, our waiter didn't seem too thrill we didn't order wine or dessert. If you want to come enjoy the view, dine next door at California Market restaurant. The view is as spectacular and the servers didn't seem as pretentious..I'm sure the bill would be half what we paid too. read more

The view from the deck is simply amazing. The feed was very good as well, but they got both of our orders wrong (1 omelet missing crab, one omelet missing mushrooms). But they they were still quite good, and it was clear they were having other problems with orders gotten wrong, so we didn't send them back or make a fuss. We arrived at a boutique hotel very close by and were recommended to try this restaurant since it was within walking distance! George was wonderfully helpful; I regret not getting the sommelier's name; he advised us about substituting a wine since they were out of the wine we wanted; it was perfect. The service was excellent; the food was delicious and we will come back. It ended up being the celebratory dinner we wanted on the spur of the moment! read more

I would never recommend this restaurant. I made reservations for the two of us for Christmas dinner. The reviews led me to believe it would be a lovely experience. We got an email several weeks before Christmas which informed us that the meal would be a pre fixe menu, wines were part of the dinner, and the price would be $110 per person. When we arrived we were lead to a dreary eating area, were informed that the meal was buffet, and that we would have to pay extra for wine. The wine list had some fine wines and some real turkeys. The seating was like a diner, the food was all cooked and displayed in large tubs. When we objected we were "treated" to a really poor quality bottle of wine and encouraged to give the buffet a try. We declined. We went back to Carmel-By-The-Sea and were lucky enough to get into a restaurant for our Christmas dinner at half the cost with a much livelier atmosphere in a colorful and much prettier setting. I give a tip of the hat to the woman who was receiving dinner guests and handling the reservations at Pacific's Edge. She was the bright spot in an otherwise grim experience. The manager of the dining room was not particularly helpful and could use some training. All in all, a disappointing experience not to be repeated. read more

We were not disappointed when we visited this place. The service provided by our servers, Tony and Jorge, exceeded our expectations. Most of their clients (you can tell from their looks) are rich and oldies but Tony treated us with the same service as he is providing with them. He is very much attentive to all our needs and even thanked us on our way out of the restaurant. They should add more dishes to their menu though ~ foods here are not something you will be excited for. But the ambiance and the service is to die for. Look for Tony when you come over to visit. My husband and I had the opportunity to dine here this past weekend, on Friday and Saturday evenings. We appreciated the warm reception from the hostess. Our servers, Alex on Friday evening and Tim on Saturday evening were very helpful in regards to the menu . We were able to enjoy a variety of foods, all prepared to perfection by Chef Matt. Paul Fried demonstrated his expertise of wine and food pairings as well. His knowledge, friendly and warm personality truly made our evening a memorable one along with the rest of the staff. The truth: yes the flower baskets as you walk in are lovely and the location spectacular and the layout of the restaurant has charm given the location, view fireplace, outdoor seating, etc. However, the food is about as unspectacular as it comes. We went for lunch and ordered the fish tacos & halibut sandwich, $19 each. Fish tacos; the fish was breaded and fried until it was hard and unrecognizable as fish and had fried skin in the mix, yuk, the tacos include CHEESE as part of the topping.- come on, only the most unsophisticated of menus have cheese on fish tacos (we know this because we try fish tacos nearly everywhere we travel). It doesn't take much to blow a good fish taco and this place managed it on multiple levels. The flour tortilla (another big no no for quality fish tacos) was cold and tasted like frozen packaged Costco level food. Speaking of frozen, the fries were definitely the battered then frozen variety, I had 4 and my stomach hurt instantly. If I paid $10 for this meal I would've been disappointed. Halibut sandwich; I saw one on a table next to us and asked to have it on sourdough if possible and opted for the "salad" instead of fries. There were three pieces of halibut, (about 1"X1"), a slice of tomato, and piece of lettuce, on one half, in between two pieces of sourdough bread that was such low quality that it looked and tasted like wonder bread, which was bone dry, unbelievable! The salad was literally nothing more than pieces of romaine with a little dressing on it. The included greens on both plates were edible, and they should've been, right? After all the restaurant boasts local organic herbs & veggies as part of their meal prep. Problem is we didn't order a salad. The write up on this place in the Carmel dinner guide smacks of a bought and paid for ad after this experience. Chef Bolton has definitely bolted. This place is not worth the $$$ - a better plan would be to take in a hike along Point Lobos to see the view and go into Carmel for a quality meal. Lastly, the server and hostess were about as unimpressive as the food. read more

View is what you're paying for. No doubt about it. Be careful though, unless you can sit outside, there are only a couple tables that get a window view. Do NOT get the crab and lobster roll appetizer, if you think you're getting a small dish to eat. These are not your east coast rolls, but asian egg rolls. Taste was OK, but heres the rub, there was maybe 1 dime sized morsel of lobster, and I dont think I tasted or SAW any crab. $21 for fish tacos was tough, but taste was good. Fries good. Well first of all it's a beautiful drive up to the place, and the outside landscaping -Asian in style is tranquil and calm, valet parking is a nice touch. Every table has a view of the ocean, get there before sunset for great views. Hugh wine list with a wide range of prices and half bottles too. had the abalone app. cooked great, a brussel spout salad with a warm dressing nice combo, and then the salmon cooked perfect. All dishes were beautifully presented. Desert bread pudding with a hint of chocolate with lavender ice cream just perfect. later we went to the lounge for dancing and a night cap. So disappointed in our dinner here last Saturday night. The filet mignon was so tough it couldn't even be cut. When sent back they RE-GRILLED it! After complaining that it still couldn't be cut my husband was given a new steak. My salmon was ok but couldn't have been more than 4 oz. and the lentils that came with it weren't cooked; however I didn't say anything because of the situation with my husband's steak. We have stayed at the Highlands Inn quite a few times in the past and dined at Pacific Edge each time but now we're not so sure we will again. read more
